Edith H. Smith, 77
Edith H. Smith, 77, of Westfield
died on Tuesday, January 1, 2002 at the
Wayne View Convalescent Center in
Wayne.
Born in Quincy, Mass., she was a
resident of Westfield for most of her
life.
Mrs. Smith graduated from the
College of William and Mary in
Williamsburg, Va., with a degree in
chemistry. She was also a member of
the school’s Chi Omega Sorority.
She was a member of the Overlook
Twigs and the High Bridge Methodist
Church in High Bridge.
She was predeceased by her husband,
Richard Kent Smith, in 1982.
Surviving are a daughter, Wendy
L. Warwick of Scotch Plains; a son,
Harwood Kent Smith of
Cockeysville, Md.; a brother, Robert
Lee Harwood of Naples, Fla., and
two grandchildren.
The funeral service was held at 10
a.m. on Saturday, January 5, at the
Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad
Street in Westfield. Interment was
private.

Doris Kaplow, 77
Doris Hartman Kaplow, 77, of
Westfield died on Thursday, December
27, 2001 at her home.
Born in Newark, she lived in
Westfield since 1956.
Mrs. Kaplow had been a legal secretary
for various attorneys in Union
County for 25 years before retiring in
1991.
She was a member of Hadassah of
Westfield.
She was predeceased by a daughter,
Terry Kaplow.
Surviving are her husband, Jerome
Kaplow of Westfield; two sons, Richard
Kaplow of Westfield and Robert
Kaplow of Metuchen; a sister,
Beatrice Weber of London, England,
and three grandchildren.
Graveside services were held on
Friday, December 28, at Mount Lebanon
Cemetery in Iselin.
Arrangements were handled by the
Menorah Chapels at Millburn in
Union.
Robert Jones, Jr.
A memorial service will be held
at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2002
for Robert Stephen Jones, Jr., in
the Chapel of The Presbyterian
Church in Westfield.
Mr. Jones, 34, who grew up in
Westfield, died suddenly on Tuesday,
December 18, in Minneapolis,
Minn., where he lived.
A graduate of Westfield High
School and Earlham College in
Richmond, Ind., he was employed
as a Senior Account Executive with
Household Finance Corporation
in Minneapolis. He had also had a
sales career involving sailboats,
rowing shells and antiques.
Surviving are his father, Robert
S. Jones; his mother, Carol Jones
Cushman, and two brothers,
Russell M. Jones and Lowell H.
Jones.
Robert E. List, 76
Company President; Was Echo Lake Country Club Trustee
Robert E. List, 76, of Westfield
died on Wednesday, January 2, 2002 at
Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., he had
lived in Manhattan prior to moving
to Westfield since 1954.
Mr. List was President and Chief
Executive Officer of Henry G. Richter
Inc. of Westfield, an engineering
manufacturers representative and
electronic components design firm
with which he was affiliated since
1952. He also served as the
company’s Vice-President from 1963
to 1989.
He received a Bachelor of Science
Degree in Mechanical Engineering
from Bucknell University in
Lewisburg, Pa., in 1948, and served
on the university’s Board of Trustees
from 1982 to 1987.
He was a member of the Bison’s
Club Executive Committee from
1970 until his death and had been
President of the committee from 1980
to 1988.
Mr. List was also a Past President
of the Northern New Jersey Bucknell
University Alumni Club and served
on the board of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.
A graduate of the Officer Training
Program at Notre Dame University
in South Bend, Ind., Mr. List served
as an Ensign in the United States
Navy in the Pacific theater during
World War II.
He was a member of the Echo
Lake Country Club in Westfield, serving
on its Board of Trustees from
1972 to 1978, and also helped organize
the platform tennis program at
the club.
He was additionally a member of
the New Jersey Senior Golf Association;
the Corinthian Yacht Club of
Cape May, and the International
Engineering Executives and the Electronic
Representatives Associations.
Mr. List was also a volunteer for the
United Fund of Westfield.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth
List; a son, Robert E. List, 2nd of
Fair Haven; a daughter, Karen E.
List of New York City; a brother,
Thomas F. List of Palm Beach, Fla.,
and five grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on
Saturday, January 5, at The Presbyterian
Church in Westfield.
Funeral arrangements were under
the direction of the Higgins and
Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in
Westfield.

Sophie Hartvigsen, 98
Sophie S. Hartvigsen, 98, of Oak
Ridge died on Wednesday, January
2, 2002 at Chilton Memorial Hospital in
Pompton Plains.
Born in Brooklyn, she had formerly
lived in Scotch Plains for 50
years, residing in Oak Ridge since
1970.
She attended School One in Scotch
Plains and graduated from Westfield
High School in 1921.
Mrs. Hartvigsen was very involved
during the 1940s and 1950s with the
Scotch Plains Girl Scouts, serving as
both a leader and a member of the
Washington Rock Girl Scout Council.
She was active in the Oak Ridge
Presbyterian Church and the Golden
Age Club, both of West Milford and
Jefferson.
She was predeceased by her husband,
Harman Hartvigsen, in 1958,
and by her son, Harman Hartvigsen,
Jr., in 1996.
Surviving are her daughter, Lois
H. Wells of Butler; a brother, Larry
Nielson of North Carolina; five grandchildren
and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held on
Saturday, January 5, at Fairview Cemetery
in Westfield.
Arrangements were under the direction
of the Gray Funeral Home,
318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
