Robert G. Schlemm

ROCKAWAY TWP. – Robert G. Schlemm died on Saturday, May 16, 2009 after a long illness. He was 83.

Born in Union City, he lived in North Bergen before moving to Rockaway Twp. in 1960.

Mr. Schlemm was an engineer with Union Carbide in Bound Brook for 10 years before retiring in 1983.

He was a member of King of Kings Lutheran Church in Mountain Lakes.

He is survived by his wife Ruth; two daughters Karen Will of Rockaway Twp. and Kathi Davey of Selkirk, NY; his sister Audrey Temple of Somerset; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 19 at 10:00 a.m. at King of Kings Lutheran Church, Rt. 46, Mountain Lakes. Entombment to follow at Restland Memorial Park, E. Hanover. Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 4-8 p.m. only at the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave, Rockaway.

Dori A. Ferrone

ROCKAWAY – Dori A. Ferrone died on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 after a long and courageous battle with Multiple Sclerosis. She was 41.

Born in Dover she was raised in Byram Twp. and lived in Netcong before moving to Rockaway 6 years ago.

She was a parishioner of St. Cecilia’s Church in Rockaway.

She is survived by her husband, Scott, her brother Niel Gylling of Easton, PA, her sister Vicky and her husband Joseph Jacobsen of Blairstown. She is also survived by several nieces and a nephew.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, April 25 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Cecilia’s Church in Rockaway. Interment to follow at Stanhope Union cemetery. Arrangements are by Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave, Rockaway.

Della O. Williams

ROCKAWAY TWP. – Della O. Williams died on Monday, April 20, 2009 at St. Clare’s Hospital/Dover. She was 83.

Born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas she lived in Washington, D.C. before moving to Rockaway 49 years ago.

Mrs. Williams was a homemaker.

She is survived by her daughter Sharon Donatoni and her husband Mark, her son Brian K. Moehrbach, and two grandsons Nicholas and Michael Donatoni all of Rockaway.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 23 at 10:00 a.m. at Locust Hill cemetery – Mausoleum Chapel, Dover. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave, Rockaway.

For those who wish, donations may be made to: American Heart Assn. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

L. Robert Smith

ROCKAWAY TWP. – L. Robert “Bob” Smith died on Friday, April 10, 2009 at Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Clare’s Hospital/Dover following complications from a stroke. He was 92.

Born in Middletown, OH, he moved to Rockaway Twp. 53 years ago.

Mr. Smith attended Ohio State University and later completed his degree at Newark College of Engineering (now The NJ Institute of Technology) in 1967.

He began his career at the Curtiss-Wright Corp. in E. Rutherford, and later worked at Thomas A. Edison Industries in West Orange before retiring as an electrical engineer with NY Telephone Co. in New York, NY in 1985. Mr. Smith was also the inventor of the ionization chamber for Industrial Nucleonics in Columbus, OH. He also worked at Hercules as part of the Apollo Mission.

He was a member of the NJ Jazz Society, the Barn Theater in Montville, and the Association of BellTel Retirees. He was also a member of the choir at the United Methodist Church of the Rockaways. Mr. Smith had a great love of music and following his retirement enjoyed playing his beloved tenor guitar.

He is predeceased by his mother Grace Hawkins and his brother Rogers Smith.

He is survived by his loving wife Novella of 54 years and his daughter Karen Sue Smith of Rockaway Twp.; and his cousins by marriage, The Brooks Family of Centerville, OH.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 18 at 12 noon at the United Methodist Church of the Rockaways, 1 Hoagland Ave., Rockaway. Visiting hours will be on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave, Rockaway. Interment will take place in Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: NJ Jazz Society, PO Box 410, Brookside, NJ 07926, or to: The Music Fund of the United Methodist Church of the Rockaways. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Henry Farischon, Jr.

ROCKAWAY – Henry Farischon Jr. passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 9, 2009 at Kindred Hospital in Dover following a long illness. He was 74.

Born in Scranton, PA, he spent most of his youth in Lyndhurst before moving to the Denville/Rockaway area 49 years ago.

Henry was employed at McLean Trucking Co. in Kearny for 25 years as a diesel mechanic, and then for 10 years at Old Dominion Freight Lines in Jersey City as a shop supervisor before retiring in 2002. In addition he was also the proprietor of Farischon Truck Repair, which he ran with his sons John, Joseph and James.

Henry enjoyed camping, fishing and learning about historical events.

He is survived by his loving wife Carolyn of 50 years; his son John and his wife Laura of Rockaway, his son Joseph and his wife Jodie of Lafayette, his daughter Mary of Rockaway, his son James of Afton, NY; his sister Doris of Lyndhurst; his grandchildren John Jr., Shannon, Justin, Chelsea, Nicholas, Cody and Ryan; and five nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 14 at 9: 15 a.m. from the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave, Rockaway to a funeral Mass at St. Cecilia’s Church, Rockaway at 10:00 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. only.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: St. Clare’s Foundation (to benefit the Cancer Care Center), 140 Diamond Spring Rd., Denville, NJ 07834. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Charles J. Stabile

GLADSTONE – Charles J. Stabile, 81, died on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at Morristown Memorial Hospital.

Born in Newark and raised in Roseland, he lived in Rockaway Borough most of his life before moving to Bryan Manor in Gladstone five years ago.

Mr. Stabile was a technician with PSE&G; for over 30 years. After his retirement, he worked as a crossing guard in Rockaway Borough.

He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of the Rockaway Boro Seniors, American Legion Post 175 of Rockaway, and the V.F.W.

He was predeceased by his daughter Shirley in 1996.

He is survived by three daughters, Debbie Nicholson of Hillsborough, Nancy Rosa and her husband Samuel of Budd Lake, and Donna Davis and her husband Hal of Marina del Rey, CA; three grandchildren, Linda, Jimi and Danielle; and two great-grandchildren, Michael and Kaiden.

Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, July 10 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Whitham - Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway. Private cremation service will follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: American Heart Assn., 1 Union St. Ste. 301, Robbinsville, NJ 08691. Envelopes will be at the funeral home.

Joseph B. "Sonny" Barilla, Sr.

ROCKAWAY – Joseph B. “Sonny” Barilla Sr., 88, died on Monday, July 5, 2010 at Pine Acres in Madison.

He was born and raised in Newark and previously lived at the Carriage Club in Mt. Arlington for two years before moving to Victoria Mews in Boonton Twp. two years ago.

Mr. Barilla was a Dental Technician with the U.S. Government for 30 years, retiring in 1975. He also worked at Automatic Switch in Florham Park for 15 years, retiring in 1990.

He served in the Army during WWII.

He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway and a member of American Legion Post 43 in Madison where he served as Past-Commander and Chaplain, American Legion Post 351 in Seaside Heights and the 40 & 8 Club of Wharton.

He was predeceased by his wife Betty in 2004.

He is survived by his son, Joseph Jr. and his wife Cindy of Parsippany; son, Frank and his wife Noree of Rockaway Twp.; son, Mark of Miami, FL; three sisters, Rose Testa, Marie Orgo and Anna Caporaso; six brothers, Dominick, Vito, Dicky, Jerry, Anthony and Frank; five grandchildren, Joseph Barilla, Aimee Kronmiller, and Robert, Julie and Emma Barilla; and a great-grandson Lucas Daniel Kronmiller.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 9 at 9: 15 a.m. from Whitham - Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway to a funeral Mass at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Vincent’s cemetery in Madison. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dennis C. Whalen

ROCKAWAY – Dennis C. Whalen, 92, died on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at Morris View Nursing Home in Morris Twp.

Born in Elizabeth, he previously lived in Paterson, and in Rockaway for 28 years.

Mr. Whalen was a self-employed painter for 48 years, retiring in 1998.

He served in the Army during WWII.

He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for the past 54 years. Mr. Whalen had a great love for animals, especially dogs, and would never turn down the opportunity to help a stray in need.

He was predeceased by his wife Catherine in 1974 and his beloved great-grandson Owen Christopher in 2004.

He is survived by his daughter, Denise Nickel and her husband Ken of Rockaway; his sister Adeline Bross of Texas; three grandchildren, Bryan Nickel and his wife Robin, Brett Nickel and his wife Rebecca and Brenna Nickel; and three great-grandchildren, Sam, Mira and Keelie Nickel.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 12 at 11:00 a.m. at the Whitham - Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Avenue, Rockaway. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. only.

In lieu of flowers, envelopes for donations will be available at the funeral home for AA – Intergroup; or the March of Dimes, Attn: DRFR, 1275 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains, NY 10605.

John J. Wolosin

LAKELAND, FL – John J. Wolosin, 87, passed away Saturday June 5, 2010 after a short illness in Florida.

He had previously resided in Rockaway.

He was predeceased by his wife Georgianna.

Survived by his daughter, Joanna O’Connor and her husband Robert of Manasquan; his son, John and his wife Catherine of Plant City, FL; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; his brother Stephen and his wife Jean; and his sister Jen Olenowski; and 16 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June10 at 9: 15 a.m. from Whitham - Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Avenue, Rockaway to a funeral Mass at St. Cecilia’s Church at 10 a.m. Interment to be held privately. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. only at the funeral home.
