Edith Louise Halley

ROCKAWAY – Edith Louise Halley died on Friday, June 19 at home. She was 97.

Born in Oak Ridge, she lived in Englewood before moving to Rockaway in 1950.

Mrs. Halley was a graduate of the Paterson Normal School in 1953 obtaining a degree in elementary education. She taught at Washington School in Rockaway before her retirement; and prior to that she taught at Milton School for 5 years.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of the Rockaways, and had a love for gardening.

She was predeceased by her husband Stanley in 1999.

She is survived by her daughter Janet R. Schraft of Rockaway; three sons, Dr. Fred S. of Rochester, NY, Stanley G. Jr. of Roseland, OR, and Dr. Robert B. of Cedar Edge, CO; two brothers Harold S. and Roland Fredericks; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 22 at 10 a.m. at United Methodist Church of the Rockaway, 1 Hoagland Ave., Rockaway. Interment at North Hardyston cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 2-6 p.m. at the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway.

In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the charity of your choice.

Harold J. Quinn

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL – Harold J. Quinn died on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 in Port Charlotte, FL. He was 84.

Born in Newark, he lived in Elizabeth and Bloomfield before moving to Rockaway in 1956; he recently settled in Port Charlotte, FL in September of last year.

He served in the Navy Seabees from 1943-1946 attaining the rank of Boatswains Mate 2nd Class.

Mr. Quinn was a draftsman with TILP from 1947-1984 and at HQ Design from 1984-2000.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Winifred; four children Joyce DiClementi, Susan, Jack and Thomas Quinn; 11 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 23 at 10 a.m. at St. Cecilia cemetery, Rockaway. Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway.

In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to: Alzheimer’s Assn., 400 Morris Ave., Ste. 146, Denville, NJ 07834. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Rose (Chipko) Menzak

ROCKAWAY – Rose (Chipko) Menzak died on Friday, June 12, 2009 at Merry Heart Nursing Home of Boonton Twp. She was 98.

Born in Marcella, and lived most of her life in Rockaway.

She retired from Howmet Corp.-Dover Alloy after 32 years.

She was a member of the Rockaway Boro Seniors and Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway.

She was predeceased by her husband Samuel, 4 brothers and 4 sisters.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 16 at 9: 15 a.m. from Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway to a funeral Mass at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Rockaway at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven cemetery, E. Hanover. Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 6-8 p.m. only.

Rita E. Lattig

BANGOR, PA – Rita E. Lattig died on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at Easton Hospital in Easton, PA. She was 76.

Born in Dover, she lived in Rockaway before moving to Bangor, PA 3 years ago.

Mrs. Lattig was a clerk with McGregor Sportswear in Dover for many years before her retirement.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of the Rockaways, and the Eastern Star Rebecca Lodge of Dover.

She was predeceased by her first husband Norman E. Lattig Sr. in 1989 and her second husband Charles Bidgood in 2003.

She is survived by three children Norman Jr., and Sandra Monticello both of Mt. Bethel, PA, and James of E. Bangor, PA; a sister Jean Bakos of Mt. Bethel, PA; two grandchildren Eden Caparood and Harley Lattig both of Bangor, PA; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 15 at 10:00 a.m. at Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway. Entombment to follow at Locust Hill cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 2-6 p.m. only.

Arthur R. James

ROCKAWAY TWP. – Arthur R. James died on Sunday, June 7, 2009 at home after a short illness. He was 84.

Born in Rockaway Borough, he was a lifelong resident of Rockaway.

Mr. James was a welder with Douglas Engineering in Rockaway for 11 years before retiring in 1995; prior to that he worked at Moretrench also in Rockaway for 35 years.

He served in the Army during WWII in the Normandy and Northern France Campaigns receiving two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.

Mr. James was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rockaway, the Rockaway Athletic Club and the Rockaway Twp. American Legion Post #344. He was also a baseball umpire for Little League, high school and college level teams.

He is survived by his wife Ann of 62 years; two daughters Sharon Stites of Rockaway and Cindy Vickers of St. Louis, MO; a sister Gladys Hosick of Denville; six grandchildren Sandra Brennan, Jennifer McLagan, Rebecca Stites, Jay and Jacqueline Gerard and Robert Vickers; and a great-granddaughter Jessica Gibbons.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 10 at 10:00 a.m. at Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway. Interment to follow at Rockaway Presbyterian cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. only.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Atlantic Home Hospice, 33 Bleeker St., Millburn, NJ 07041 or to the Rockaway Borough Fire Dept., 1 E. Main St., Rockaway, NJ 07866. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Carolyn M. Moriarty

ROCKAWAY TWP. – Carolyn M. Moriarty died on Saturday, May 30, 2009 at home after a long illness. She was 70.

Born in the Paterson, she lived in Passaic and Lodi before moving to Rockaway Twp. in 1978.

Mrs. Moriarty was employed as an office manager with Bart Moriarty State Farm Insurance Agency in Rockaway for 25 years before retiring in 1998.

She is predeceased by her mother and father Maryann and Charles Hauser.

She is survived by her husband Bart Moriarty; a son David Springer of Hammonton, NJ; a daughter, Anita Kochis of Flanders, NJ; two grandchildren, Christina and Michael Kochis.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 2 at 7:00 p.m. at Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. only.

Mary M. Grivalsky

MONROE TWP. – Mary M. Grivalsky died on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at Winwood at Forest Gate Assisted Living in Monroe Twp. She was 86.

Born in the Hibernia section of Rockaway Twp., she was a lifelong resident of Rockaway before moving to Monroe Twp. 3 years ago.

Mrs. Grivalsky was a homemaker.

She was a parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway where she was a member of the Seniors Club; and was also a member of the Rockaway Borough Senior Citizens Club.

She is predeceased by her husband Joseph A. in 1985.

She is survived by her son Joseph of Naples, FL; two daughters, Barbara Nugent of Searsport, ME and Carol Wright of Cranbury; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 28 at 9: 15 a.m. from the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway to a funeral Mass celebrated at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Rockaway at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Locust Hill cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. only.

Elizabeth B. Poh

KENVIL – Elizabeth B. Poh died on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at Troy Hills Nursing Home in Parsippany. She was 89.

Born in Erie, PA, to the late John Lovas and Mary (Serfozo) she lived in Queens, NY, Teaneck, before moving to Rockaway Twp. from 1965 to 1994; she later moved to Wharton and has resided in Kenvil for the last 5 years.

Mrs. Poh was a shade card/die worker with Sandoz in East Hanover before her retirement in 1988; prior to that she had worked as a teller at National Community Bank in Dover.

Mrs. Poh enjoyed spending time with her family playing Scrabble and watching NY Mets games. In her early years, she helped with Catholic Charities. She was a parishioner of St. Cecilia’s Church in Rockaway and a member of the church Choir, the Rosary Society and the St. Cecilia’s Senior Citizens Club, where she enjoyed traveling with her many friends. She loved gardening and growing vegetables. For many years she was on the Woman’s and Mixed Bowling Leagues. She also enjoyed playing mahjong with friends.

She is predeceased by her husband Raymond in 1991.

She is survived by two sons Kenneth and his wife Mary Ellen of Kenvil, and Christopher and his wife Fran of Frenchtown; her daughter Mary Clarke and her husband Jim of Cresskill; her brother Steven Lovas and his wife Grace of Clearmont, FL; three grandchildren Christine (Clarke) and her husband Mike Randolph of Pt. Orchard, WA, Matthew David Poh of Kenvil, and Brendan Clarke and his wife Bari of Boulder, CO; and two great-grandchildren, Mia and Sebastian Randolph

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 22 at 9: 15 a.m. from the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway to a funeral Mass celebrated at St. Cecilia’s Church, Rockaway at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Mary Rest cemetery, Mahwah. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. only.

Salvatore Carmen Pelaia

ROCKAWAY – Salvatore Carmen Pelaia died on Saturday, May 16, 2009 after a short illness. He was 76.

Born in Bellville, he lived in Rutherford and Lodi before moving to Rockaway 42 years ago.

Mr. Pelaia was an electronics technician with Singer-Kearfott in Wayne for 25 years before his retirement in 1989.

He served in the Navy during the Korean War from 1952 to 1960.

He was a parishioner of St. Cecilia’s Church in Rockaway and a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his wife Lois; three children, Richard Alan of Bristow, VA, Karen Ann Horvath of Bedford, NY, and David Paul of Chandler, AZ; a sister, Rose D’Alessio of Toms River; two brothers Fred of Hanover, PA and Carmen of Randolph; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 20 at 9: 15 a.m. from the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway to a funeral Mass celebrated at St. Cecilia’s Church, Rockaway at 10:00 a.m. . Interment to follow at St. Cecilia cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. only.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
