Winifred D. Quinn
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL – Winifred D. Quinn died on Wednesday August 19, 2009 in Port Charlotte, FL. She was 84.
Born in Bloomfield, she moved to Rockaway Twp. in 1956 and recently settled in Port Charlotte, FL in September of last year.
Mrs. Quinn was a saleslady at Montgomery Ward in Dover and also a substitute teacher for the Rockaway Twp. public schools before her retirement.
She was a parishioner of St. Cecilia’s Church in Rockaway and a member of the White Meadow Lake Seniors club.
She was predeceased by her husband Harold Quinn on June 17, 2009.
She is survived by four children Joyce DiClementi, Susan, Jack and Thomas Quinn; 11 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Monday, Aug. 24 at 10 a.m. at St. Cecilia cemetery, Rockaway. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 3-6 p.m. only at the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway.

Marie Longo
ROCKAWAY TWP. – Marie Longo died on Tuesday August 18, 2009 at Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Clare’s Hospital/Dover. She was 91.
Born in Jersey City, she moved to Rockaway Twp. in 1962.
Mrs. Longo was a homemaker. A beloved mother and grandmother, she devoted her entire life to her family.
She was a parishioner of St. Cecilia’s Church in Rockaway.
She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Sr. in 2006.
She is survived by two sons Joseph Jr. and his wife Diane of Yakima, WA and Robert and his wife Margie of Stanhope; a sister Madeline Liberatore of Marlboro; four grandchildren, Alison, Jodi, Joseph I. and Todd Longo and five great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday, Aug. 20 from 10 – 10: 45 a.m. at the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway, with a graveside service following at 11:00 a.m. at St. Cecilia cemetery, Rockaway.
Nell Amsden
SHERMAN OAKS, CA – Nell Amsden, 89, died on Monday August 10, 2009 at The Village at Sherman Oaks Retirement Community in Sherman Oaks, CA. She was born Nell Huizenga in 1920 in Montville, and lived in Morris County until 2002, when she moved to Southern California to join her daughter and grandchildren.
In 1945, Nell married
Philip G. Amsden, an employee of NJ Bell (now AT&T; ). Philip predeceased her in 1991.
A longtime resident of Rockaway, Nell worked at the First Iron Bank, now known as the PNC Bank, staying on for 20 years as assistant to the bank’s chief officer until she retired in 1982. Nell was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Rockaway where she also participated in bible study classes. She was also an active member of the Pearl Chapter of the Eastern Star.
Although her cross country move came late in life, Nell made the most of her relocation to Southern California, even going so far as to transfer her allegiance from the NY Mets to the LA Dodgers. As a resident of The Village in Sherman oaks, Nell reveled in a score of new friends, volunteered at the facility’s general store, participated in Saturday evening social hours and competed, somewhat fiercely, in dominoes.
First and foremost, Nell was proud of her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a charming, happy and loving woman, quick with a quip or practical advice. Nell took great pleasure in a good meal and great conversation and as such was never lonely. An expert knitter, her baby blankets made their way into the hands of many expectant parents. She also loved to crochet and was often seen with her hands busily working with needles or a hook as she carried on a conversation with everyone around her.
Survivors include her daughter Christine Naegle and son-in-law Lester Naegle of Los Angeles, CA, her son Philip Gerald Amsden, Jr. and his wife Christine; her two granddaughters Sue Naegle Gould and Andrea Shay as well as her grandson Mark Philip Naegle. She is also survived by 5 great-granddaughters: Katharine Liu Gould, Alice Fuxia Gould, Olivia Claire Shay, Jane Anne Shay and Madeline Christine Shay.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15 at the First Presbyterian Church, 35 Church St., Rockaway. Interment to follow at Rockaway Presbyterian cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 4-8 p.m. at the Whitham-Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave, Rockaway.

Kenneth W. Becker
BUDD LAKE – Kenneth W. Becker died on Sunday, July 26, 2009 at Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Clare’s Hospital, Dover. He was 68.
Born in Weehawken, he lived most of his life in Ridgefield and Cliffside Park before moving to Budd Lake 5 years ago.
Mr. Becker owned a dairy product company before his retirement.
He previously served in the Navy.
He is survived by his two sons Scott of Cherry Hill and Steven of Rockaway; a brother Robert Becker of Secaucus; a sister Janice Keyser of Chatham; and four grandchildren Vincent, Daniel, Rebecca and Justin.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 30 at 10:00 a.m. at the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway. Interment to follow at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday from 6-9 p.m. only.

Robert E. Nilsen
ROCKAWAY – Robert E. Nilsen died on Sunday July 26, 2009 at Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Clare’s Hospital/Dover. He was 64.
Born in Jersey City, he lived in Rockaway for the last 32 years.
Mr. Nilsen was a tractor-trailer driver.
He served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War.
He is survived by his wife Jo-Ann of 40 years; two sons, Robert Jr. and his wife Kerrie of Rockaway, and David and his wife Christine of Succasunna; a sister, Maureen Swolensky of Henderson, NV; two granddaughters Amber and Ashley, and two expected grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 29 at 11:30 a.m. at the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. only.

Harry Sickles
ROCKAWAY TWP – Harry Sickles died on Monday July 20, 2009 at home. Harry was 80 years old.
Born in Dover, Harry was a lifelong resident of the Mt. Hope section of Rockaway Twp.
Harry graduated in 1945 from Rockaway High School as an honor student. He received the award for Men’s Senior All-Around Athletic and Academic Scholarship from the Presbyterian Church of Dover.
Harry attended Rutgers University as an honor student on a football scholarship. He played football and baseball for the Rockaway Athletic Club, in the Dover Twilight league. He played football for the Rockaway Iron Dukes where he was the All Conference Football leading high scoring place kicker from 1946-1950.
For over 40 years, Harry was an outstanding member of the Northern NJ Umpires Assn. He refereed/umpired Little League, High School and College football, baseball and Softball for Morris and surrounding counties.
Harry worked for Mt. Hope Rock Products in Rockaway Twp. before his retirement.
He was predeceased by his son-in-law Alan Hiner.
Harry was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife Frances; five daughters Donna Sickles, Marcia Steinberg, Diane Barrella, Janet Hiner and Maureen Pietri; four grandchildren Jennifer and Michael Steinberg, Nicholas Pietri and Christopher Barrella; and four sons-in-law Larry Zimic, Chris Barrella and Randy Pietri.
Services were held privately by Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway.
Mark James Davis
ROCKAWAY TWP. – Mark James Davis died suddenly on Friday, July 10, 2009 in upstate New York. He was 54.
Born in Los Angeles, CA, he moved to Kearny in 1981 and has resided in Rockaway Twp. for the past 9 years.
Mr. Davis was a truck driver.
He was predeceased by his wife Joyce Mary Russell in 2007.
He is survived by two children Jeffery Robert Russell and Genevieve Russell both of Rockaway Twp.
Funeral services were held privately.
Dorothy M. Steinhauser
ROCKAWAY – Dorothy Marie Steinhauser died on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at home. She was 88.
Born in Kenvil, she was raised in Succasunna and lived most of her life in Rockaway.
Mrs. Steinhauser was a homemaker. For many years, she was a school crossing guard in Rockaway Borough.
She was a parishioner of St. Cecilia’s Church in Rockaway.
She was predeceased by her husband George L. in 2001.
She is survived by three children George E. of Bayville, Timothy B. of Branchville and Carol J. Lally of Mine Hill; a sister Shirley Holmes of Berkshire Valley; 8 grandchildren George J. Steinhauser, Lori S. Santucci, Brandt E., Timothy E., Christopher J., and Britt M. Steinhauser, and Meghan and Caitlin Lally; and six great-grandchildren Kelsey, Carly and Jaycen Santucci, and Marissa, Vanessa and Dylan Steinhauser.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 27 at 9: 15 a.m. from the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway to a funeral Mass at St. Cecilia’s Church at 10 a.m. Interment at Rockaway Presbyterian cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m.
Gertrude G. Earl
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - Mrs. Gertrude Earl whose life has been blessed by God died June 22, 2009 at Sunny Vista Living Center, Colorado Springs, CO.
Gertrude had many interests and led an active life centered on church and family. She had worked in former years for A.R.C. Morris County Unit for handicapped children and also St Dunstens Nursery School. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Rockaway, for 75 years and an affiliate of Faith Presbyterian Church, Colorado Springs, CO since moving to Colorado in 2007.
Gertrude was predeceased by her husband Wilbur L. Earl in 2007.
Gertrude is survived by two daughters, Joan R. Thompson and Judith A. Peterson, both of Colorado Springs, CO; a sister Joan L. Cooper of Manchester and two loved and appreciated sons-in-law Joseph P. Thompson and James R. Peterson both of Colorado Springs, CO.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 35 Church St., Rockaway on Thursday, July 16. Inurnment to follow at Rockaway Presbyterian cemetery.
