Salvatore C. Arnoa, Sr.
ROCKAWAY – Salvatore C. Arnoa, Sr. died on Thursday, September 11, 2008 at Care One of Morris in Parsippany. He was 89.
Born in Brooklyn, NY he lived in Rockaway before moving to Wharton in 2002, and he returned to Rockaway last year.
Mr. Arnoa served with the Army Corp of Engineers in WWII.
He was in charge of the grounds and the school at Mountain Lakes High School before his retirement in 1991.
Mr. Arnoa was a parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway. He was the Past-Commander of the American Legion Rockden Post 175 of Rockaway, and a member of the St. Cecilia’s Seniors club.
He is survived by his loving wife Georgina of 66 years; his son Salvatore, Jr. and his wife Dee of Rockaway; two sisters, Rose DeMartino of Ozone Park, NY, and Catherine Mutinelle of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; a granddaughter, Lisa Piserchio and her husband Mark; and her great-grandson Salvatore Matthew.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 9: 15 a.m. from the Whitham- Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway to a funeral Mass at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Cecilia’s cemetery, Rockaway. Visiting hours will be on Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. only.
Jerry Marotta
ROCKAWAY – Jerry Marotta died on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008 at Merry Heart Health Care Center in Succasunna. He was 84.
Born in Orange, he lived in Rockaway for the last 30 years.
Mr. Marotta served in the Army during WWII, where he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
He was a mason and owner of Maro Bros. in Rockaway for 40 years. He later worked as a maintenance man at Dover High School for 10 years before retiring.
Mr. Marotta was a parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway. He was a member of the Rockaway Borough Super Seniors, a former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus in Dover, and the Disabled American Veterans.
He is survived by his wife Susan; his daughter Lucille Raab of Belvidere; his son Vincent of Andover; a brother Patsy; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Rockaway on Monday Sept. 15. Interment to follow at St. Vincent’s cemetery, Madison. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 2-6 p.m. only at the Whitham-Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave, Rockaway.
Helen Victoria (Chipko) Wach
ROCKAWAY – Helen Victoria (Chipko) Wach died on Monday, October 5, 2009 at St. Clare’s Hospital/Denville. She was 93.
Born in Rockaway, she was a lifelong resident.
Mrs. Wach was an assembly worker with Howmet in Dover for 23 years before her retirement in 1981.
She was a parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Rockaway.
She is survived by her loving husband Frank, her daughter Deborah Tanzola and her husband John of Rockaway; two sisters Marge Adler and her husband Walter of Dover and Kathleen McCarthy of Florida; a brother Peter Chipko and his wife Lucy of Rockaway; two grandsons Robert F. and Thomas Rorrer; and a great-granddaughter Haylee Marie.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Oct. 9 at 9: 15 a.m. from the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway to a funeral Mass at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway at 10 a.m. Entombment to follow at Locust Hill cemetery, Dover. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Joseph A. "Sleepy" Abato
BOONTON – Joseph A. “Sleepy” Abato died on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Clare’s Hospital/Dover. He was 84.
Born in Morristown, he was a lifelong resident of Boonton.
He served in the Army during WWII.
Mr. Abato was a laborer and president of the Laborers’ International Union Local 519 of Boonton for 40 years before his retirement.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Boonton and a member of the South Boonton Field Club.
He was predeceased by his wife Mildred in 2008.
He is survived by his daughter Patricia DiBonaventura; his son Frank Evans; three grandchildren, Michael Milaccio, and Damon and Andrea Evans; and a great-grandchild, Avery.
Services were held privately.
John F. "Jack" Frey
MILTON, DE – John F. “Jack” Frey died suddenly on Saturday, September 19, 2009. He was 70.
Born in Paterson, he lived in Rockaway Twp. before moving to Milton, DE in 1992.
Mr. Frey served in the Army.
He was a tool and die maker with ASCO in Florham Park for 22 years before his retirement in 1992.
Mr. Frey was a Councilman for Rockaway Twp. and had previously served as council president and vice-president, and had also served as an aide to Senator Anthony Bucco. He was a member of the American Legion Post 344 of Rockaway Twp., a member of the Rockaway Twp. Fire Dept., and a coach for Rockaway Twp. midget football for 18 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing & was an avid Buffalo Bills fan.
He is survived by his wife Louise of 42 years; two sons Fred DeRosa and Glenn Frey both of Rockaway Twp.; a sister Margaret Soingerland of West Virginia; and five grandchildren Nicholas, Vincent, Alicia, Derek and Anthony John.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 10:00 a.m. at the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. only.

Stephen E. Drobesh
ROCKAWAY – Stephen E. Drobesh died on Friday September 18, 2009 at Regency Grande Nursing Home in Dover. He was 89.
Born in Ringwood, he lived in Mahwah before moving to Rockaway in 1951.
Mr. Drobesh served in the Army as a radio operator during WWII.
He was the sales manager for Roof Chevrolet and Konners Chevrolet in Boonton for 28 years before his retirement in 1979. He served as the Mayor of Rockaway Borough from 1970 – 1975.
He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway, a member and former Commander of the VFW Post 9238, and a member of the American Legion Rockden Post 178.
He is survived by his wife Mary; his daughter MaryAnn Tillson and her husband Matthew of Texas; his son David Drobesh and his wife Joann of Texas; a brother Anthony Drobesh of Millbrook; and a sister Margaret Kaye of Arizona.

Sophie Price
ROCKAWAY – Sophie Price died on Tuesday September 15, 2009 at Regency Grande Nursing Home in Dover. She was 82.
Born in Oswego, NY she lived in Passaic before moving to Rockaway in 1968.
Mrs. Price was a homemaker and enjoyed mowing her lawn and shoveling the snow.
She was a parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway.
She was predeceased by her husband Walter in 1991.
She is survived by her daughter Linda Price of Rockaway; and two sisters Peggy Bumbera of Clifton and Helen Loughran of Lynchburg, VA.

William J. Sopchak
ROCKAWAY TWP. – William J. Sopchak died on Sunday September 6, 2009 at the Boonton Firemen’s Home. He was 82.
Born in the Hibernia section of Rockaway Twp. he was a lifelong resident.
Mr. Sopchak was a machinist for over 20 years, and retired as head custodian from Dover Elementary School.
He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway where he was on the parish Board of Trustees for many years. He was also a 15 year member and past-chief for the Hibernia Fire Co. #1 of Rockaway Twp.
He was predeceased by his wife Miriam in 1991.
Mr. Sopchak was a loving and patient father and grandfather. He is survived by his son John and his wife Teresa of Hibernia; four grandchildren Andrew, Grace, Christopher and Thomas Sopchak; and two sisters Margaret Derewicz and Elizabeth Davenoprt.

Barry Dee Crites
WHITING – Barry Dee Crites died on Monday August 31, 2009 at home. He was 81.
Born and raised in Topeka, KS, he lived in Rockaway Twp., Long Valley, and Bath, NH before moving to Whiting 7 years ago.
Mr. Crites was an engineering psychologist with Picatinny Arsenal in Rockaway Twp. before his retirement in 1994.
He served in the Marines during WWII.
He was a member of the China Marines, the VFW of Bayville, the Marine Corp League of Whippany and the American Legion of Wharton.
He is survived by his wife Betty Jean of 32 years; three daughters Lisa Dee Crites of Ambler, PA, Denise Ball of Orlando, FL and Bunny McAvenia of Pennington; four step-children, Keith Matthews of Morristown, Scott Matthews of Hackettstown, Stephen Matthews of Whiting and Margo Otey of Budd Lake; a brother Jack Crites of Topeka, KS; and nine grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Friday, Sept. 4 at 10 a.m. at the Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway. Interment to be held on Tuesday, Sept 8 at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans cemetery in Arneytown Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, Sept. 3 from 4-8 p.m. only.
