Wayne N. Brown
ROCKAWAY – Wayne N. Brown died on Sunday, August 3, 2008 at home. He was 81.
Born in Laceyville, PA he lived in Rockaway for the last 35 years.
Mr. Brown served in the Army during peacetime.
He was a tree surgeon and previously the co-owner of NJ Tree Co. in Totowa for over 20 years before his retirement.
He was predeceased by his longtime companion Phyllis Kuhlmey in 2005, his brothers Al and Floyd Brown, and his granddaughter Vicki Warren.
He is survived by his sister Peggy “Joyce” Oster; six daughters Carline Kuhlmey, Nancy Warren, Mary Ellen Stickle, Linda Kuhlmey, Kathy Garlow and Carol Raedisch; and six grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 5 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. only at the Whitham - Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway. A private cremation service will follow.
Bernadette Shauger
ROCKAWAY – Bernadette Shauger died on Thursday, July 31, 2008 at Regency Grande Nursing Home in Dover. She was 86.
Born in Brooklyn, NY she lived in Bethlehem, PA before moving to Rockaway in 2002.
Mrs. Shauger was a homemaker.
She was predeceased by her first husband Frank Gangemi in 1957, her second husband Donald W. Shauger in 2002, and her brother Artie Windt.
She is survived by five children, Frank Gangemi of Bethlehem, PA, William Gangemi of The Villages, FL, Bernadette Green of Boonton, Katherine Shasa of Rockaway and Joseph Gangemi of Lady Lake, FL; six brothers, Charles, Edward, Louis, Jackie, Warren and Mickie Windt; four sisters, Catherine Cikovsky, Betty Boyne, Patricia Rontunda and Mary Keba; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, Aug. 3 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. only at the Whitham - Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway. A private cremation service will follow.

Sophia Parisi
ROCKAWAY – Sophia Parisi died on Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at Barn Hill Care Center in Newton. She was 87.
Born in Wharton, NJ she lived there until moving to Rockaway 60 years ago.
Mrs. Parisi was a homemaker.
She was a parishioner of St. Cecilia’s Church in Rockaway.
She is survived by her brother John Skwarek of Denville her sister Pauline Picone of Madison and three nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 12 at 9: 15 a.m. from Whitham - Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway to a funeral Mass at St. Cecilia’s Church, Rockaway at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Locust Hill cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 7-9 p.m. only.
William J. McMahon
ROCKAWAY TWP. – William J. McMahon died on Sunday, July 6, 2008 at home. He was 75.
Born in Queens, NY he lived there until moving to Rockaway Twp. 40 years ago.
Mr. McMahon was a newspaper printing pressman with the NY Times Co. in New York, NY from 1966 until his retirement in 2002; prior to that he had worked for the NY Journal American for several years.
He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict.
He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway. One of his proudest achievements was receiving his Black Belt in Karate.
He is survived by his wife Carol of 42 years; two sons, Kenneth of Cairo, NY and Terence and his wife Lisa of Rockaway; two granddaughters, Elisabeth Katherine and Emma Grace McMahon; and two brothers, Robert McMahon and his wife Fern, and John McCrowe and his wife Marguerite.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 9 at 9: 15 a.m. from Whitham - Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway to a funeral Mass at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Rockaway at 10 a.m. Entombment to follow at Gate of Heaven cemetery, E. Hanover. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. McMahon’s name to: American Lung Assn., or to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Linda D. Ciurciu
ROCKAWAY TWP. – Linda Darlene Ciurciu died on Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at UMDNJ in Newark after a short illness. She was 51.
Born in Walton, NY she lived in Rockaway Twp. for the past 30 years.
Mrs. Ciurciu was a homemaker
She was predeceased by three brothers Jack, Donald and Gerald Walley.
She is survived by her husband Bill; three children, Corinne Ciurciu, Erica Powers and Billy Ciurciu; eight sisters, Golden Virginia Cook, Pearl Smith, Rosie Moore, Gloria Schror, Joan Geer, Mechele Wormuth, Debbie Debeaux, Ruthie Schaefer; a brother Russell Walley; and two grandchildren, Ethan Thomas Degnan and Isabella Powers.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 28 at 10 a.m. at Whitham - Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway. Interment to follow at Marcella Union cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Elizabeth "Liz" Novak
ROCKAWAY – Elizabeth Ann “Liz” Novak, a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Clare’s Hospital/Dover after a yearlong illness. She was 93.
A lifelong resident of Rockaway Borough, Elizabeth was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Rockaway.
A woman devoted to her family, friends and faith, Liz was an avid gardener and amazing cook who always put the needs of others before her own.
She was the wife of George Novak who passed away in 1978. A member of the Hric family, Liz was predeceased by her four brothers, George, John, Steven and Andrew.
Survived by her beloved daughter Bette C. Smith and her husband William E. of Stuart, FL; three grandchildren, Craig Steven Smith and his wife Mary Ann of Dover, Tracey E. Smith of FL, Mark William Smith and his wife Pam of PA; two great-grandchildren Mark William Smith and his wife Natalie, and Jacob Smith of PA; a sister Ann VanStrander and her husband Roger of PA; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 27 at 9: 15 a.m. from Whitham - Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway to a funeral Mass at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Rockaway at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Cecilia cemetery. Michael Chipman
ROCKAWAY TWP. – Michael Chipman died on Friday, June 13, 2008 at Morristown Memorial Hospital. He was 49.
Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, he lived in Boonton before moving to Rockaway Twp. in 2001.
Michael was a parishioner of St. Cecilia Church in Rockaway.
He was predeceased by his father Edward.
He is survived by his loving wife Janice; his cherished daughter Claire Chipman at home; his mother Sally Chipman of Louisville, KY; five siblings, Mary Lee Vandermoere of Eaton Rapids, Mich., Jeanne Earp and her husband Warren of Xenia, OH, Patrick Chipman and his wife Laurie of Louisville, KY, Lynn Mumford and her husband Richard of Alpharetta, GA, and Daniel Chipman of Eaton Rapids, Mich.; and several caring nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 17 at 10 a.m. from Whitham - Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway to a funeral Mass at St. Cecilia Church, Rockaway at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Cecilia cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Marguerite N. Runyon
ROCKAWAY – Marguerite N. Runyon died on Monday, June 9, 2008 at St. Clare’s Hospital/Denville. She was 89.
Born in Oneida, NY she lived in Rockaway since 1956.
Mrs. Runyon worked in the accounting department of ExxonMobil in Florham Park for 15 years before retiring in 1986.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of the Rockaways, and of the Rockaway Boro Seniors Club.
She was predeceased by her husband Arthur in 1996.
She is survived by her sister Elizabeth Cook, her brother Joseph Nye, a brother-in-law Henry Cook; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 12 at 12 noon at Whitham - Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway. Interment to follow at Locust Hill cemetery. Visiting hours will be held prior to the service on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Carol R. Powell
OAK RIDGE – Carol R. Powell passed away on Sunday, June 8, 2008 at Compassionate Care Hospice in Dover after a long battle with cancer. She was 67.
She retired from the health care profession in 2005. She enjoyed decorating, crafts and home improvement projects.
She is survived by two daughters, Marion Barbato of Rockaway and Darlene Gara of Wharton, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held privately.
Lawrence J. Flanigan, Jr.
ROCKAWAY TWP. – Lawrence J. Flanigan Jr. died on Saturday June 7, 2008 from complications of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy at his daughter’s home in Rockaway Twp. He was 73.
Born in Dover to the late Lawrence Sr. and Catherine (Krall) Flanigan, he was a lifelong resident of Rockaway Twp.
Mr. Flanigan was proprietor of Viking Sewing Center in Morristown and Whippany since 1965, and retired from daily operations in 1995.
He previously served in the Navy Reserves.
Mr. Flanigan was a 50 year member of Hibernia Fire Co #1 of Rockaway Twp. where he had served as Rescue Captain, a trustee, and was an E.M.T. He was also a member of the Sons of Norway Nor Bu Lodge 427, the Lake Telemark Country Club, and had formerly been a Weeblow Scout leader all in Rockaway Twp, and the Water Gap Country Club of Pennsylvania. He was the chairman of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Assn. Lori Flanigan Annual Golf Outing and also a member of the Silver Shores Assn. in Key Largo, FL.
He was predeceased by his daughter Lori Flanigan in 1995; and his siblings Patricia Gronemann and Tom Flanigan.
He is survived by his loving wife Anne of 52 years; his son, Larry III and his wife Linda; two daughters, Lynn Perry and her husband Kevin, and Lisa Salberg and her husband Adam; and four grandchildren, John and Stacey Titus, Jennifer Tomasini and her husband Aaron; and Rebecca Salberg.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, June 8 from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway. A procession to the Hibernia Fire Co #1 for a Last Call service will follow the visitation.
