Burton Eaton Jr.
SEABROOK - Burton "Snookie" Eaton Jr., 61, of 50 Adams Ave., died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Md., while he was participating in an experimental leukemia research project.
He was born Nov. 20, 1940, in Brentwood, the son of Bertha (Brown) Eaton of Seabrook and the late Burton Eaton. He was raised in Seabrook and had resided in Madison for 30 years before returning to Seabrook two years ago.
He was educated in local schools and Amesbury High School.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving from 1958 to 1963 in Laos just prior to the Vietnam War.
Mr. Eaton owned and operated a Dairy Queen Restaurant in North Conway for 30 years and also worked as a carpenter. He had worked at Frosty’s Clam Co. in Seabrook for the past two years.
He was a member of the Raymond E. Walton American Legion Post 70 of Seabrook; enjoyed playing whist at Seabreeze Village and was a faithful Red Sox fan.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Corenna "Krena" Eaton of Conway and Jessica Eaton of Seabrook; one sister, Sarah Sielicki of Seabrook; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by one sister, Cheryl E. Eaton, who died in infancy.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.
Edna G. Hoitt
RAYMOND - Edna G. (Sanborn) Hoitt, 78, of 86 Batchelder Road, died of Alzheimer’s disease Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at Seacoast Health Center, Hampton, after a lengthy illness.
She was born Dec. 6, 1923, in Fremont, the daughter of Sylvester and Clara (Robinson) Sanborn.
Mrs. Hoitt retired from Rockingham County Nursing Home in 1986. She had previously worked at Spaulding & Frost and Regis Tannery.
The widow of Roy W. Hoitt, who died in 1990, she is survived by two daughters, Brenda Stanton of Raymond and Linda Page of Greenland; four grandchildren; one sister, Louella Hoitt of Raymond; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by one grandson, Edward W. Page, who died in 1996.
There are no calling hours.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, Sept. 14, at 11 a.m. in Leavitt Cemetery, Fremont, with the Rev. Kwan Lee officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the N.H. Alzheimer’s Association, 10 Ferry St., Concord, NH 03301.

Alan N. Pope
EXETER - Alan Neergaard Pope, 85, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at SunBridge of Exeter following a lengthy illness.
He was born April 17, 1917, in Bronxville, N.Y., the son of Bayard and Elma (Neergaard) Pope and had resided on the Seacoast for 35 years.
He was a graduate of St. Paul’s School and attended Princeton University.
He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II serving as a bombardier/navigator on B-17s and received the Air Medal in 1945.
Mr. Pope was the AP bureau chief in Concord in the 1950s and served as administrative assistant to Governors Lane Dwindle and Hugh Gregg. Following public service he had a long career in advertising. In retirement, he operated sailing schools in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Gloucester, Mass., and for 20 years at Wentworth-by-the-Sea in New Castle. He also wrote columns for the Rochester Times and Wolfeboro Times.
He was a member of the Piscataqua Maritime Commission and was their Citizen of the Year in 1989.
He is survived by two sons and their wives, Alexander and Jennifer Pope of Newfields and Christopher and Kristin Pope of Concord; two daughters, Katherine Coster of Duncan, B.C., Canada and Ballard Andrews of Melrose, Mass.; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
There are no calling hours.
A private gathering will be held Saturday at the home of Alexander and Jennifer Pope.

Edward B. Smith
EXETER - Edward B. "Ted" Smith of RiverWoods, died August 4, 2002, at his home.
He was born in Beirut, Lebanon, the son of the late Prof. Byron P. and Alice (Bliss) Smith and was raised in Beirut. He had resided in Reading, Mass., before moving to Exeter in 1996.
He attended the American Community School in Beirut and was a 1941 graduate of Vermont Academy, Saxtons River, Vt., and a 1945 graduate of Dartmouth College, Hanover.
He was a veteran of World War II serving as a navigator on a B-17.
Mr. Smith was employed at the Bank of Boston, retiring in 1987.
He is survived by his wife, Martha "Pat" (Emerson) Smith of Exeter; one sister, Elizabeth Rae of Casper, Wyo.; one niece and two nephews.
He was predeceased by one sister, Alison Goodman.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, Sept. 22 at 2:30 p.m. at RiverWoods at Exeter.
Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.
Albert P. Balkus
NEWBURYPORT, Mass. - Albert P. Balkus, 82, of Merrimac St., died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Nursing Home, Manchester, after a lengthy illness.
He was born July 7, 1920, in Lowell, Mass., the son of the late Ipolitas and Veronica (Balcius) Balkus. He was raised in South Boston and lived in Newburyport for many years.
Mr. Balkus was a member of the Carpenters Local No. 33 and worked at Filene’s in Boston.
He was a life member of the North End Boat Club in Newburyport.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Dorothy E. (Felch) Balkus of Raymond; two daughters, Carol M. Rogers of Raymond and Dorothy A. Bailey of Epping; five sons, Paul A. Balkus of Haverhill, Mass., David J. Balkus of Newbury, Mass., Michael A. Balkus of Wolfeboro, John J. Balkus of Ashland and William Sturgyn of Amesbury, Mass.; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping. Burial will follow in Belleville Cemetery, Newburyport.
Col. Maurice R. Buttrick
HAMPTON - Col. Maurice R. Buttrick, 72, of 39 Milbern Ave., died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in Exeter Hospital.
He was born July 1, 1930, in Henniker, the son of the late Ronald A. and Lucy (Tatro) Buttrick and had resided in Hampton since 1966 coming from Amherst.
He was a 1951 graduate of the University of New Hampshire where he was a member and current treasurer of Sigma Beta Fraternity and attended Boston College School of Law.
Col. Buttrick was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict and continued service with the New Hampshire Air National Guard for 31 years, retiring as the executive staff support officer at NHANG headquarters in Concord.
He served at ANG Unit at Pease Air Force Base for three years as commander of the 157th Resource Management Squadron and 20 years as comptroller of the 157th Air Refueling Group.
In 1985 he was the recipient of the Legion of Merit, the third highest military decoration awarded during peacetime. He was a certified public accountant maintaining an office in Portsmouth for 25 years.
He was a 32nd degree mason and was a member of Benevolent Lodge No. 7, F. & A.M. of Milford; the Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Nashua; the New Hampshire Consistory, Valley of Nashua; and Bektash Temple Shrine, Concord.
He was a charter member of the William Pitt Tavern Lodge No. 1789 of Portsmouth and past patron of the Puritan, Charity, Themis, Atlantic Chapter No. 29, Order of Eastern Star of Milford.
He was a member of the Portsmouth Rotary Club; treasurer of Lifewise; a director of the Mark Wentworth Home in Portsmouth; and a member of the American Legion Post No. 35 of Hampton.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Barbara (Hampel) Buttrick of Hampton; one son and his wife, Todd A. Buttrick and Victoria Lynn of Fremont; one daughter, Tracey A. Buttrick of Portsmouth; two grandchildren; one brother, David Buttrick of Webster; one niece and nephew; and three cousins.
Funeral services were held Monday in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. Burial was in High Street Cemetery, Hampton.
Roy G. Ferreira Sr.
EPPING - Roy G. Ferreira Sr., 72, of Pleasant Street, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at his home after a sudden illness.
He was born Feb. 16, 1930, in Lynn, Mass., the son of the late Alfred G. and Jennie (Santos) Ferreira and was a longtime resident of Beverly, Mass., and had resided in Epping since 1964, summering in Beverly.
He was a 1948 graduate of Beverly High School.
Mr. Ferreira and his father began Ferreira Livestock in the early 1950s in Topsfield, Mass. He moved his farming operation to Epping in 1964 and he continued to run the farm until the mid-1980s.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Natalie E. (Churchill) Ferreira of Epping; three daughters and their husbands, Gloria and John J. Brewitt of Raymond, and Lynne F. and Gary Barrett and Deborah and Jeffrey Liacos, all of Beverly; two sons, Roy G. Jr. and his wife Beth Ferreira of Beverly and Wayne A. Ferreira of Epping; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Idalia Gomes of Beverly; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Route 27, Epping. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Rex A. McGuinn
EXETER - Rex A. McGuinn, 50, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, in Exeter Hospital after a sudden illness.
Mr. McGuinn taught English at Phillips Exeter Academy for 16 years.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret M. (Regis) McGuinn.

Thomas J. Kelly
NEWBURYPORT, Mass. - Thomas J. Kelly, 65, of Andover, Mass., died Saturday, 28, 2002, after a sudden illness.
He was born in Boston and had resided in Burlington and Somerville, Mass., and Seabrook.
Mr. Kelly was the former president and chief executive officer of Somerset Savings Bank, Somerville.
He is survived by his wife, Alexandra M. (Kenty) Kelly; three sons, Kevin T. Kelly and Thomas J. Kelly Jr., both of Bradford, Mass., and Richard G. Kelly of Norwood, Mass.; three daughters, Patricia A. Kelly of New Jersey, Debra J. Macone of Stoneham, Mass., and Noreen M. Kelly of Newton, Mass.; two stepsons, J. Paul Haney of New Hampshire and Sean F. Haney of Andover; 14 grandchildren; his former wife, Diane M. (Antolini) Kelly; three sisters, Charleen Donahue of Arlington, Mass., and Maureen Rigby and Margaret J. Walsh, both of Burlington, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the George L. Doherty Funeral Home, 855 Broadway (Powderhouse Square), Somerville.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 8 a.m. in the funeral home followed at 10:30 a.m. by a Mass of Christina burial in St. Augustine Church, Andover. Burial will be in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington.

Elmer N. Pinette
DOVER - Elmer N. Pinette, 67, of 22 Sunnybrook Drive, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at Exeter Healthcare, Exeter
He was born June 8, 1935, in New Brunswick, Canada, the son of Douglas and Odesse (Lejeune) Pinet. He came to the United States in 1957 and resided in Newmarket for 30 years before moving to Dover nine years ago.
He served with the Canadian Regiment for two years.
Mr. Pinette was a member of Local Union No. 976 and was employed by Williams Power Inc., at the Seabrook Power Plant. He had previously worked with various contractors and worked at Seabrook while it was being built.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, working in his garden and collected baseball cards and comic books.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Theresa (Gendron) Pinette of Dover; four sons and their wives, Sgt. 1st Class Kevin and Kelly Pinette, stationed with the National Guard in Concord, Douglas and Lisa Pinette of Weare, Gunnery Sgt. Nicholas and Lynne Pinette, stationed in California and Staff Sgt. Ricky and Beth Pinette, stationed with the National Guard in Concord; one daughter, Stephanie Pinette of Rochester; 14 grandchildren; one brother, Howard Pinet of Canada; two sisters, Theresa Boudreau and Eleanor Pinet, both of Canada; three nieces and one nephew.
A celebration of his life was held on Sunday at his home.
