Virginia Weit
NEWMARKET - Virginia "June" (Sopel) Weit, 78, of South Main Street, died Sunday, May 13, 2001, at Exeter Healthcare.
She was born Feb. 22, 1923, in Newmarket, the daughter of Joseph and Katharina (Ras) Sopel.
She attended Newmarket schools and was a graduate of Becker Business College, Worcester, Mass.
Mrs. Weit was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 25 years, retiring in 1968.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Robert J. Weit of Exeter Healthcare; one son, Michael Weit of Newmarket; two daughters, Colleen Bertagnolli of Newmarket and Robin Pullo of Henniker; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
At Mrs. Weit's request there will be no calling hours. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. After cremation burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Newmarket.

Patricia E. Warrington
KINGSTON - Patricia E. Warrington, 76, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, in Hale Hospital, Haverhill, Mass.
She was born Oct. 31, 1924, in Putney, Vt., the daughter of the late John J. and Ethel (Aiken) Lyons.
She was the valedictorian of Salem (Mass.) Classical and High School class of 1943 and attended Salem Evening School.
Mrs. Warrington was a secretary in Boston and at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Exeter for many years.
She was a ham radio operator with the call letters WB1EOF.
The widow of Edwin G. Warrington Jr., who died June 14, 2000, she is survived by one daughter, Eileen Erin Wentworth of Rochester; two sons, Timothy Warrington and Mark Warrington, both of Portsmouth; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother, William Lyons of Putney; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by one brother, John C. Lyons, and one sister, Eleanor Lansing.
Private burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Kingston.

Garvase N. White
STRATHAM - Major Garvase N. White, (U.S. Army Ret.) 80, of Willowbrook Ave., died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at The Inn at Deerfield.
He was born April 25, 1921, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was raised in Roxbury, Mass. and had resided in Stratham since 1964.
He was a 1939 graduate of Boston Technical High School. He attended Sanborn Prep School and Northeastern University after receiving several athletic scholarships.
He joined the U.S. Army in December of 1941 and served as a senior marine salvage master. During his 23-year career he received many citations for hazardous duty as a marine diver.
Following his retirement from the Army in 1964, he joined the Jordan Marsh Co. in Boston as a controller.
He is survived by his wife, Annette L. White of Stratham; one son, Garv White of Lake Oswego, Ore.; two daughters, Sue Armstrong of Mt. Vernon, Wash., and Martha White of Framingham, Mass.; four grandchildren; two sisters, Frances Munichiello of North Brookfield, Mass., and Jean Munichiello of South Weymouth, Mass.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Eva White; and one sister, Kay DeLuca.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Church, 182 Main St., Newmarket, with the Rev. John Finnigan as celebrant. Burial will follow in Maple Lane Cemetery, Stratham.

Marian G. Major
EXETER - Marian G. Major, 91, of Langdon Place, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at her home.
She was born Aug. 8, 1909, in Lancaster, N.Y., the daughter of Alson J. and Clara E. (Porter) Walker. She resided in Chatham, N.J., for 34 years moving to Exeter in 1998.
Mrs. Major was a manager and secretary in the engineering department at New York Telephone Co. for more than 30 years, retiring in 1974.
The widow of Floyd P. Major, who died in 1978, she is survived by two sisters, Kathryn Cunningham of Port Orange, Fla., and Clara W. Butler of Durham; several nieces and nephews; and one cousin.

Margaret P. Tate
EXETER - Margaret P. Tate, 94, of Washington Street, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at her home after a brief illness.
She was born May 22, 1907, in Stratham, the daughter of the late Frank H. and Grace (Gowen) Pearson. She was raised in Stratham, had resided in Falls Church, Va., for five years, moving to Exeter in 1947.
She was a 1924 graduate of Robinson Female Seminary and attended Chandler Secretarial School, Boston.
Mrs. Tate worked in the library at Phillips Exeter Academy from 1948 until her retirement in 1971. She had previously worked as a secretary with the Department of State in Washington, D.C., from 1926 until 1928. From 1928 until 1942 she served as the American secretary for the Hungarian Legation, and was the only American on staff.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Exeter; a member of the Exeter and Stratham Historical Societies; the Exeter Senior Citizens Group; the American Association of Retired Persons; the Friends of the Library; and was a volunteer with the Hospital Auxiliary.
She enjoyed looking into family genealogy.
The widow of James H. Tate Jr., she is survived by one son, James H. Tate III of Bonner Springs, Kan.; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Georgiana "Nan" Pearson of Exeter; one brother, Oscar H. Pearson of Portsmouth, R.I.; and several nieces and nephews.
There are no calling hours.
Memorial services will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. in First Baptist Church of Exeter with the Rev. Jamie Moynihan officiating. A reception will follow in the church. Burial will be in Congregational Cemetery, Stratham.

Rev. Franklin W. Thurston
EAST KINGSTON - Rev. Franklin Woodruff Thurston, 83, of Giles Road, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, in Exeter Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born June 13, 1917, in Water Buffalo, N.Y., the son of the late Morgan G. And Ethel (Woodruff) Thurston. He resided in New Jersey and New York for 40 years, in New Milford, Conn., for nine years, moving to Exeter in 1989 and to Kingston in 2000.
He was a 1939 graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College, Buckhannon, W.V., and a 1943 graduate of Drew Seminary, Madison N.J. He was active with the Eagle Scouts.
Rev. Thurston served as a preacher as a former member of the Northern New Jersey Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served at the Westtown Methodist Church in Westtown, N.Y.; the Federated Church of Chester, N.J.; The Trinity Methodist Church of Clifton, N.J.; the Grace Church of Kearny, N.J.; as associate superintendent of Good Will Industries in Newark, N.J.; the Trinity Methodist Church in Rahway, N.J.; the Archer Memorial Methodist Church in Allendale, N.J., and the Calvary United Methodist Church in Dumont, N.J.
He was instrumental in starting a creative living center in Allendale.
Following his retirement he lived in New Milford working as the minister of calling for the First Congregational Church for nine years.
After moving to Exeter he became an active member of the Congregational Church of Exeter and was a former minister of visitation for the church.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Muriel (Brust) Thurston of East Kingston; two daughters, Lynne Kuhn of East Kingston, with whom he made his home, and Sandra Thurston of Manchester; one son, Richard Thurston of North Haven, Conn.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Congregational Church of Exeter, 21 Front St., Exeter. A reception will follow in the church.

Elizabeth Whitman
EXETER - Elizabeth Alden Cushing Whitman, 91, of Hampton Road, died Friday, May 25, 2001, in Exeter Hospital.
She was born Sept. 22, 1909, in Brookline, Mass., the daughter of the late Arthur A. and Marjorie (Gooding) Cushing. She resided in Scituate, Mass., for 20 years and in Hingham., Mass. for 20 years before moving to Exeter in 1989.
She was a graduate of Brookline High School and a 1929 graduate of Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School, Boston.
Mrs. Whitman was a library volunteer for 50 years with the Hingham Public Library, the Scituate Public Library and the Exeter Public Library.
The widow of Roger B. Whitman, she is survived by one son-in-law, Eugene Madej of East Kingston; three granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by one daughter, Shirley Madej, who died in 1997.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery, Brookline, Mass.

Marlene E. Bennett
EPPING - Marlene E. (Moore) Bennett, 68, of 290 Calef Highway, died Sunday, May 27, 2001, in Exeter Hospital after a lengthy illness.
She was born May 13, 1933, in Exeter, the daughter of Muriel E. (Greenwood) Gould of Hampton Falls, and the late Roger I. Moore. She resided in Hampton for 55 years moving to Epping in 1987.
She was a 1952 graduate of Hampton Academy.
Mrs. Bennett was a homemaker.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 39 years, Philip P. Bennett of Epping; two sons and their wives, Kenneth and Debbie Dronsfield of Putnam Hall, Fla., and Robert G. and Judi Dronsfield of North Hampton; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Terry L. and John Yeaton and Laurie A. and Jon Dufour, all of Hampton, Sue E. Tufts of Berwick, Maine and Beth T. Merola of Portsmouth; 15 grandchildren; her stepfather, Robert H. Gould of Hampton Falls; one brother, Neil I. Moore of Kensington; one sister, Donna Ricker of North Hampton; one stepsister, Tracey Fox of Maine; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by one brother, Kenneth Moore.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Hampton United Methodist Church, Hampton. Burial will be in High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

Paul W. Cameron Jr.
STRATHAM - Paul W. Cameron Jr., 54, of Jana Lane, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home after being admitted May 22.
He was born March 31, 1947, in Wakefield, Mass., the son of the late Paul W. and Thelma (Burbank) Cameron Sr., and had been a lifelong resident of Newfields and Stratham.
Mr. Cameron was associated with the Great Bay Training Center in Newington for all of his life.
He is survived by one sister, Nancie Cameron of Somersworth; two nephews; one aunt; and several cousins.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in First Parish Church, West High Street, Somersworth, with the Rev. Mark Ridedout officiating. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield, Mass.
