BARRINGTON -- Leona F. Gamwell, 82, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, in the Sunbridge Rehabilitation Center in North Conway.
She was the wife of the late Thurston M. Gamwell.
Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Leon and Florence (Morrow) Daniels. She was a Barrington, R.I., resident for over 50 years before moving to North Conway.
Mrs. Gamwell had been a secretary for the Barrington Presbyterian and prior to that was a secretary for the Gordon School in East Providence. She was also a volunteer at Encore, the thrift shop at St. John's Church in Barrington.
She was a member of the National Honor Society. She loved knitting, reading, theater and the ocean.
She leaves a son, T. Scott Gamwell, of Fryeburg and his wife, Anne Gamwell; and three granddaughters, Melissa, Tara and Anna Gamwell, of Fryeburg. She was the mother of the late Jeffrey M. Gamwell.
The funeral and burial will be private. Donations in her memory may be made to the Fryeburg Library Children's Room, Main Street, Fryeburg, ME 04037.

FREEDOM -- Long-time Freedom resident Henry G. Lamb, 95, a nuclear standards engineer, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, in Westboro Healthcare Center, Westboro, Mass.
His wife, Ruth M. (Miller) Lamb, predeceased him. He leaves a daughter, Patricia M. Steen of Westboro; two grandsons; and a great-grandchild.
He was born in Saco, Maine, son of Charles B. and Fannie M. (Prentiss) Lamb, and graduated from Horace Mann High School in Franklin in 1922. He received a degree from Dartmouth College in 1926 and from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1928.
Mr. Lamb was a nuclear standards engineer at the National Standards Institute in New York City before retiring. He was a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Industrial Hygiene Association.
Mr. Lamb moved to Freedom in 1981 where he belonged to the First Christian Church of Freedom. He was a member of Carroll Lodge 57 in Freedom, the Richard C. Maclaurin Lodge in Cambridge, Mass., and the valley of White Plains AASR Shriners in White Plains, NY. He served on the Freedom School Board from 1983 to 1989. It was in this period that the present elementary school was constructed. He also served on the SAU 9 School Board. He was a member of the Freedom Community Club, and, prior to his stroke several years ago, he served as curator of the Freedom Historical Society Museum.
A memorial service will be held at the First Christian Church of Freedom on Saturday, Aug. 18, at 2 p.m., with the former pastor, the Rev. Bob Cedar, officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Davidson Scholarship fund of the Freedom Church, P.O Box 502, Freedom, NH 03836.

MEREDITH -- Olive Prince died at Golden View Health Center on Aug. 6, 2001, after a brief illness.
She was born in Goffstown on March 20, 1911. She earned her nursing degree from Cambridge Mount Auburn Hospital in 1928 and nursed in Boston until she returned to Goffstown after Pearl Harbor to continue nursing in Concord. Olive later moved to the Newport Memorial Hospital as director of nursing, and she was promoted to hospital administrator, supervising the planning and construction of a new and modern hospital.
In 1952, Olive married Dr. William Prince of Newport. In the mid-1950s, they moved to Moultonboro Neck to run a marina for several years. She worked as a school nurse in Wolfeboro and was instrumental in the founding of the local Visiting Nurse Association. For years she worked to support innovative medical services in the community.
Olive was predeceased by her husband, who died in 1991. She is survived by four children, Richard Prince of Moultonboro, Helen Prince of Madison, David Prince of Gilmanton Iron Works, and Margaret Morrison of Syracuse, N.Y.; her sister, Dorothy Aston, of Newton, Mass.; and numerous grandchildren.
To honor Olive, please send contributions to William Morris Prince and Olive Greer Prince Fund at New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, 37 Pleasant Street, Concord, NH 03301-4005, to continue her work to make health care available in Carroll County.
A graveside service was held yesterday, Aug. 8, at New Boston Cemetery of New Boston, NH. French and Rising Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

TAMWORTH -- Jeffrey Scott Croft, 18, of Bunker Hill Road in Tamworth, died Aug. 6, 2001, at home.
He was born Oct. 19, 1982, in Akron, Ohio, the son of Brian S. Croft Sr. and Mary Ann (Hederson) Croft. He loved art, music, fishing, basketball, swimming, baseball and all sports. He also loved watching cartoons or anything animated because he aspired to be a cartoon artist.
Jeffrey is survived by his mother, Mary Ann Hederson, of Tamworth; his father, Brian S. Croft Sr., of Lynn, Mass; two stepfathers, Duane C. Woodward, of Tamworth, and James M. Griffin, of Rhode Island; a brother, Brian S. Croft Jr., and two sisters, Carissa M. Croft and Jami M. Griffin, all of Tamworth; his maternal grandmother, Nina J. Hederson, of Oregon; and uncles, aunts and cousins.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Wonalancet Cemetery in Tamworth. Lord Funeral Home, 50 Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee, is in charge of arrangements.

LOVELL -- Erma F. Wilson, 73, of Route 5 in Lovell, Maine, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.
She was born in Sanford, Maine, the daughter of Raymand and Grace Libby Hale. She grew up and was educated in Denmark. Erma had lived in Lovell for the past 53 years and was a beautician for 35 years. She was a member of the Lovell UCC, Delta Chapter OES, Ladies Circle and the Pine Tree Chapter of Camping. For many years, she and her husband camped in Buckfield. She also enjoyed crafts, dancing, playing cards and spending time with her family.
Erma is survived by her husband of 53 years, Enfield H. Wilson, of Lovell; one son, Dale E. Wilson, of Pittsfield; one daughter, Maxine F. Wilson, of Chelsea, Maine; one brother, Irving Hale, of Denmark; and four grandchildren, Shelly, Shawn, Tanya and Brandon.
A graveside service will be held Friday, Aug. 10, at 10 a.m. at North Lovell Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fryeburg Rescue, P.O. Box 177, Fryeburg, Maine 04037. Arrangements are with Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.

TAMWORTH -- Florence "Poppy" (Carpenter) Damon, 64, of Hall Way in Tamworth, died July 21, 2001, at Memorial Hospital in North Conway.
She was born Nov. 19, 1936, in Brockton, Mass., the only child of Earl and Alice (Reynolds) Carpenter. She was a graduate of Brockton schools and Bridgewater State College, class of 1958.
Florence taught kindergarten and first grade in Dover, Sandwich, Tamworth and Lee before retiring in 1996 after 23 years of service in the field of education. "Poppy" was a part-time farmer, raising at one time or another sheep, Nubian goats, Angora goats and Angora rabbits. She was also an avid spinner and knitter and was a member of the Seacoast Spinners, NEA and NH Retired Teachers Association.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, John F. Damon, of Tamworth; a son, Scott, and daughter-in-law, Rhonda, of Barrington; a daughter, Jill, and son-in-law, Jake Jenkins, of Tamworth; three granddaughters, Brantley Damon and Megan and Rachel Jenkins; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Nancy and Everett Robar, of Lee; a niece, Susan Robar, of Keene; and a nephew, Jeff Robar, of Gray, Maine.
Contributions in her memory may be made to Dana Farber Cancer Research Institute, 1309 Beacon Street, Brookline, Mass. 02446.
A gathering to celebrate her life will be held in Tamworth in early October.
Lord Funeral Home, 50 Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee, was in charge of arrangements.

EFFINGHAM -- George M. Dewey Jr. of Route 25 East in Effingham, died Aug. 3, 2001, at Huggins Hospital, Wolfeboro, at the age of 78.
He was born May 20, 1923, in Boston, Mass., the son of the late George M. and Maybelle (Henderson) Dewey. He had lived in the greater Boston area for many years, later moving to Framingham, Mass., where he lived until moving to Effingham in 1967 where he spent summers at the English Campground.
Mr. Dewey served as Radioman First Class in the U.S. Navy during World War II and also the Korean Conflict. He had served aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga for three years.
He was a member of the Framingham Amateur Radio Club and also served as president. He loved boating and also enjoyed fishing.
Mr. Dewey is survived by his wife of 52 years, Doris (Baker) Dewey of Effingham; a daughter, Sandra Ruth Knowlton, and her husband Richard of Center Ossipee; a brother, Leighton Dewey of Weymouth, Mass.; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Donald Dewey and Russell Dewey.
There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Lakeview Cemetery in Freedom.

OSSIPEE -- Janie E. Doucette, age 101, of Ossipee, passed away Aug. 3, 2001, at the Mountain View Nursing Home in Ossipee.
She was born Aug. 1, 1900, in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and lived in Lynn, Mass., for many years, where she was employed at General Electric in Lynn and Everett, Mass., as an instructor to help build jet airplane engines.
Mrs. Doucette was predeceased by her husband, William Doucette, in 1980. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Parish in Lynn, Mass.
Mrs. Doucette is survived by a daughter, Elsie (Doucette) Watson of Center Ossipee; six grandchildren; and one great granddaughter.
There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated yesterday at St. Joseph's Church in Center Ossipee. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Lynn, Mass.
Lord Funeral Home, Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee, is in charge of arrangements.

Charlena B. Smith, 100, of Brownfield, died Friday, August 3, 2001 at the Fryeburg Health Care Center. She was born in Barrington, Nova Scotia, the daughter of Clifford and Ada Larkin Ellsworth. She was a graduate of Indianapolis Valley Seminary School in Nova Scotia. In her early twenties Charlena's family moved to Boston. After her marriage to Earland Smith she moved to Brownfield and has been there since. She was a long time member and organist of the Fryeburg Congregational Church. She was a member of the Pythagorean Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, the Brownfield Historical Society and the Brownfield This and That Club. Charlena's husband died in 1963. She is survived by a nephew whom Charlena raised, Frank and his wife Norma Hopkins of Brownfield; three grand nephews Steve, Roy and Cliff Hopkins; and two grand nieces, Shella Moncino and Pamela Wells.
There will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Pine Grove Cemetery in Brownfield with the Rev. Denis Dunn officiating. Donations may be made in memory of Charlena to the Fryeburg Rescue or to the Brownfield Community Church.
Arrangements are with Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.

CONWAY -- Wilfred J. Rajotte, 97, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Merriman House in North Conway.
Wilfred was born and educated in Lawrence, Mass., and was a resident of Methuen for many years before moving to Tucson, Ariz., in 1995 and North Conway in 1998. He was employed by Moorehouse Baking Co. Betsy Ross Bread in Lawrence for over 33 years. He also owned Rajotte Variety Store in Methuen, Mass., for 30 years, and was employed by Mobile Patrol Security Associates and Lords Poultry Farm in Methuen. He was an attendant of St. Mary's and St. Theresa's Church. He was a member of St. Theresa's Church Holy Name Society and a member of the Methuen Senior Center.
He was widower of Beatrice B. (Bourgeois) Rajotte. He is survived by daughters Claire Messier, of North Conway, and Beatrice and husband Joseph Zappala, of Richford, Vt.; one son, Richard Rajotte, of Glen; sisters Corinne Early, of Andover, and Bertha Clarke, of Salem; brother, Eugene Rajotte, of Zephyr Hills, Fla.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held today (Monday) at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Cemetery in Lawrence, Mass.
