MEDFORD, Mass. -- John Dempsey, of Medford, Mass., died Aug. 9, 2001.
He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy G. (Davies) Dempsey, and devoted father of David A. Dempsey of Madison, Richard J. Dempsey of Northbridge, Mass., Margery L. Bogus of Glastonbury, Conn., and Mary A. Dempsey of Pembroke, Mass., and brother of Marion Woodhouse of New York and the late Evelyn Davies. He is also survived by nine grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Aug. 11.

KENNEBUNK, Maine -- Ida Lunt, 66, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at a local nursing home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Salem, Mass., she was a daughter of Leo Joseph and Delumia (Leclere) Brousseau. She attended Salem schools.
Trained as a CNA, Ms. Lunt worked in various nursing homes. She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Amesbury, Mass. Ms. Lunt enjoyed music, bingo and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include one daughter, Melissa Trefry, of Ossipee; one brother, Joseph R. Brousseau; one brother-in-law, Joseph Cardoza; and two grandchildren.
There will be no visiting hours. Burial will be private.
Arrangements are by Hobbs Funeral Home in South Portland.
CHURCHVILLE, N.Y. -- Helene B. (Leni) Lindblade, 81, died Aug. 7, 2001, in Churchville, N.Y., of leukemia.
She had recently moved to Bethlehem, where she had resided for many years.
She was born April 11, 1920, in Newtonville, Mass., the daughter of Otto A. and Carol Forserg Belger. She graduated from the Lincoln School in Providence, R.I., in 1938 and earned a bachelor of science degree from Jackson College of Tufts University, Medford, Mass., in 1942. She furthered her education at the University of Virginia and at Rivier College. Prior to World War II she traveled extensively in Europe during summer vacations.
She was a former executive director of the Sullivan County Homemaker Service, overseeing its growth and eventual merger with the Visiting Nurse Association and Valley Regional Hospital. She taught elementary science in Springfield, Ohio, and Orange, Va., and junior high school science in Albemarle County, Va. She was an early incorporator of environmental studies into her curricula. She was coordinator of volunteer services during the early days of the Head Start program in Springfield, Ohio, and was later an administrator of the Head Start program in Bethlehem, Pa. She owned and handled Ch. Grafmar's Kreutz, winning best of the Wiemaraner breed at the 1943 Westminster and Boston dog shows.
She had a lifelong passion for classical music, attending her first Boston Symphony concert at the age of 9 and attending performances of the North Country Chamber Players until shortly before her death. She was a director of the Springield, Ohio, Symphony Orchestra and wrote its concert program notes for many years. She was a former director of the North Country Chamber Players.
Following her retirement to Sugar Hill and Bethlehem she was also active in many other organizations, including service as executive secretary of the Grafton County Senior Citizen's Council, and director of the Support Center against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault in Littleton. She was also a member of the board of the LIttleton Area Senior Citizen Center, a Meals on Wheels volunteer, and a volunteer registrar at Red Cross blood drives. She was a member of the Sugar Hill Willing Workers. Governor Judd Gregg recognized her for her volunteer activities.
Her four children, Carl Lindblade of North Conway, Marian Gowan of Churchville, N.Y., John Lindblade of Concord, and Eric Lindblade Jr. of Newport, N.C., and four grandchildren survive her.
A private family service was held following her cremation in Churchville, N.Y. A memorial gathering of her friends is planned for October.

MALDEN, Mass. -- Gertrude J. Galvin of Center Ossipee, 74, died Aug. 11, 2001, at Mountain View Nursing Home in Ossipee following a lengthy illness.
She was born, raised and educated in Malden, Mass. A long-time Malden resident, she lived in Ossipee for the past eight years.
Mrs. Galvin was active in Malden politics for many years. She was employed a secretary in the assessor's office at Malden Government Center. She retired in 1986.
She was the wife of Timothy E. Galvin; the mother of Michael Galvin of Nantucket, Mass., and Susan Walsh of Salem; daughter of Gertrude (Boyes) and the late Charles P. O'Connell Jr. of Malden, and Joseph O'Connell of Lynnfield, Mass.; and grandmother of Joshua Galvin of Nantucket, Mass.
Funeral was Monday at Leo M. Norton Funeral Home in Malden. Visiting hours and burial private.

TAMWORTH -- Dorothy (French) Welch, 83, formerly of Tamworth, passed away Aug. 10, 2001, at the Mountain View Nursing Home, Ossipee, following a period of failing health.
She was born April 2, 1918, in Ossipee, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Lillian (Roy) French. Dot was raised in Center Ossipee and moved to Tamworth after her marriage to her husband the late Austin "Bud" Welch, and had lived in Tamworth, where she had been employed as a store clerk at the Whittier Cash Market and later managing the store on her own. Dot later worked as a clerk at Hickey's IGA in Center Ossipee for more than 20 years.
She was a member and strong supporter of the Saint Andrew's in the Valley Episcopal Church in Tamworth. Dot was on the board of the Tamworth Nurses Association and also the Tamworth Women's Club. She also loved to garden around her home, growing very beautiful flowers.
Dot is survived by her son R. David Welch, Tamworth; two granddaughters, Tammy Sullivan of Ipswich, Mass., and Wendy Welch of Lewiston, Maine; one great-grandson, Geoffrey Sullivan, and a great granddaughter, Jordan Sullian, both of Ipswich, Mass. She was also predeceased by a son Peter Welch.
There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew's in the Valley Church, Old Route 25, Tamworth. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Tamworth.

CONWAY -- Barbara B. Walker, 80, of Conway, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at Memorial Hospital in North Conway.
She was born in Fryeburg, the daughter of Frank and Dorothy Johnson Bemis. She graduated from Kennett High School in 1940.
Barbara lived in Houston, Texas, for many years and worked as a licensed practical nurse. She enjoyed cooking, trips to the ocean and time with her grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Langdon P. Walker. Her family includes a daughter, Sally Walker of Conway; a son, Langdon Walker of Conway; three brothers, Brad Bemis of Conway, Harry Bemis of Stow, Maine, and Paul Bemis of Florida; two grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
A memorial graveside service will be held Thursday, Aug. 30, at 10 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery in North Fryeburg, with Pastor Nelson Houston officiating. Arrangements are with Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.
FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Myra V. (Makela) Minkkinen, age 78, of Lantana, Fla., and formerly of Fitchburg, Mass., died Friday, Aug, 10, 2001, in the St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport, Conn., after an illness.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, George W. Minkkinen; three sons Allan Minkkinen of Andover, Mass., David Minkkinen of Dallas, Ga., and Steven Minkkinen of Denton, Md.; two daughters, Karen M. Minkkinen-Page of Conway and Janice E. Roy of Fairfield, Conn.; one brother, Aaro Keto of Bedford, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Mrs. Minkkinen is predeceased by four brothers, Wilho Keto, Leo Keto, Reino Makela, and Veikko Makela.
She was born in Fitchburg, Mass., on March 5, 1923, a daughter of the late John and Edla (Itapaa) Makela. She is a graduate of Fitchburg High School, the Class of 1941. She married Mr. Minkkinen on May 29, 1943. She and Mr. Minkkinen built their home, where they lived for 52 years in Fitchburg, before moving to Lantana, Fla. 18 years ago. Mrs. Minkkinen worked for the Workers Credit Union for 15 years before retiring in 1984. She was a clerk in the tax department, working with IRAs. She is a former member of the Beth Eden Baptist Church in Fitchburg and the Pilgrim Covenant Church in Lunenburg, Mass. She was a member of the Revontulet Finnish Folk Dancers in Fitchburg, the Point Overlook Social Club in Lantana, Fla., the Finnish Center at Saima Park in Fitchburg and the Fitchburg Finnish Historical Society.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 16, at 10 a.m. in the Westminster Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 123 Main Street, Westminster, Mass. Rev. John Buczynski will officiate. Calling hours will be in the funeral home on Wednesday, Aug. 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in the Woodside Cemetery, 9 Narrows Road, Westminster, Mass. Flowers may be sent or memorial contributions may be made to the Raivaaja Finnish Historical Fund, 164 Elm Street, Fitchburg, MA 01420 or left at the funeral home.
CONWAY -- John M. "Jack" Lavelle, 62, of North Conway, died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late Patrick A. and Mary Jane (Surgenor) Lavelle. He resided in the Philadelphia area for 36 years before moving to Conway in 1974.
Mr. Lavelle was a former employee of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, and after moving to Conway was an attendant at the Scenic Vista in North Conway and later was custodian at Citizens Bank for 12 years. A former employee at Briarcliff Motel, he most recently worked at Wal-Mart, both in North Conway.
In addition to this mother of Glenside, Pa., he is survived by nine brothers, David Lavelle of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Patrick Lavelle of Toby Farms, Pa., Thomas Lavelle of North Hollywood, Calif.; Gerard Lavelle of Pottstown, Pa., Lawrence Lavelle of Holland, Pa., Richard Lavelle of Glenside, Pa., and Stephen Lavelle of Horsham, Pa.; two sisters, Eileen Lavelle of Chalfont, Pa., and Maureen Dougherty of Oreland, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his longtime companion, Ed Schenck of North Conway, and his devoted pet cat Friskie.
A memorial service will be held Friday at St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church in Glenside, Pa. Hours for the memorial service have not yet been determined. There will be no visiting hours. Donations in his memory may be made to Jen's Friends, PO Box 1842, North Conway NH 03860-1842.

MADISON -- Roy T. Courtney, 79, of Silver Lake, died Aug. 11, 2001, at the Merriman House in North Conway after a long illness.
Born in Baker, Fla., the son of Albert and Willie (Meadows) Courtney, he lived in New Jersey for 36 years before moving to Silver Lake in 1987.
Roy graduated from Ft. Myers (Fla.) High School and the University of Tennessee. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of 10 years, having served in World War II and Korea.
Mr. Courtney had been employed with ITT Labs in Nutley, N.J., for 30 years as an electronic engineer.
He was a member of the American Legion and a member of the Madison Church.
The family includes: his wife of 49 years, Yvonne (LaBonte) Courtney of Silver Lake; a son, Robert Michael Courtney of Florida; three daughters, Jacqueline M. Hayes of Hawley, Pa., Arlene R. Courtney of Monmouth, Ore., and Beverly A. Shelton of Somerset, Ky.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a grandson, Ryan D. Hayes, in 1994, and two siblings, Clyde Courtney and Alene Boyette.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Madison Church with Rev. Sean Dunker-Bendigo, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Laurel Grove Cemetery in Paterson, N.J. on Thursday. There will be no visiting hours. Donations may be sent to the Madison Rescue Squad, PO Box 59, Madison NH 03849-0059.
