TAMWORTH -- Richard Phenix, of Chocorua, died at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro on Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, after a lengthy illness.
As requested, no funeral services will be held.
He was born on Oct. 14, 1919, in Hampton, Va., the son of Spencer and Evelyn Phenix. He is survived by two sisters, the Rev. Elizabeth P. Wiesner and Joan Phenix, his former wife Priscilla Phenix, son Alan Phenix, daughter Katharine Phenix and three grandchildren.
He attended the University of New Hampshire 1937-40, 1945-47, graduating with a bachelor of science degree. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Ohio State University of Social Administration in 1950.
His military service, 1941-45, was in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and Office of Strategic Services (OSS), Camp Crowder, Mo., Fort Belvoir, Va., Washington D.C., Fort Monmouth in New Jersey, Puerto Rico, England and France. He attained the rank of captain during that period.
His employment included: associate executive secretary, Saginaw, Mich., United Chest and Council: social planning focus. The National Committee for a Free Europe and Radio Free Europe. Director, Northeast United Services-branch office in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania/Health and Welfare council. Director, federal demonstration project on social services in urban renewal, mayor's office, Philadelphia, Pa. National field representative, American Association for the United Nations and U.S. Committee for Refugees, New York, N.Y. Social planning consultant for the United Community Fund, San Francisco, Calif. Director, Community Service Project for Marin County, Calif. Associate commissioner, Administration on Aging, Dept. HEW. Executive director, NH Arthritis Foundation, Concord, NH. Public information office, New Hampshire Technical Institute, Concord. International editor for "73 Amateur Radio Magazine," Hancock, NH. Lecturer on substance abuse at Beech Hill Hospital.
Richard was a prolific writer. In 1947, his book, "On My Way Home," published by WM Sloan Associates, documented his trip across the country, and back to "home," Chocorua, after discharge from the army. Over the years he wrote numerous articles and letters to local and national newspapers and magazines, very often humorous, concerning the socio-political state of affairs.
A series he authored on the U.S. Constitution, "The Document that Nobody Knows," was published locally in 1987.
His hobbies, other than writing, included photography and mechanical ingenuity. Richard was also a volunteer at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway.
CONWAY -- Harold S. Kenney, 94, of North Conway, died Aug. 13, 2001, at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in North Conway after a long illness.
Born in Boston, Mass., on Jan. 1, 1907, he was the son of Edward and Grace (Woods) Kenney. He lived in New Canaan, Conn., for 27 years prior to moving to North Conway in 1973.
Mr. Kenney received his bachelor and master's degrees from Boston University, a Master of Art degree from Yale University and pursued studies at Harvard and Columbia. At Boston University, he was president of Phi Delta Kappa, an honor society in education, and a member of Pi Gamma Nu, an honor society in social studies.
He taught and was assistant headmaster at Watertown (Mass.) Senior High School from 1929 to 1946, where as hockey coach he helped establish Bay State Interscholastic Hockey League in the Boston area. He served as president of the Watertown Teachers Association.
During World War II he served with the U.S. Air Force Training Command for three years as an instructor of meteorology, navigation and B-52 cruise control and held the rank of Major.
Hal was headmaster of New Canaan (Conn.) High School from 1946 to 1968 and assistant superintendent until retirement in 1973. For contributions to education he was named a John Hay Fellow.
He was a former member of the New Canaan Kiwanis Club and past president. He formed the Mount Washington Valley Kiwanis Club and served as secretary for 11 years from its inception. He was named Outstanding Secretary of the New England District of Kiwanis International. He was honored with the Distinguished Community Service Award from both the Mount Washington Valley and New Canaan Kiwanis Clubs.
Mr. Kenney was a member of First Church of Christ Congregational in North Conway, former member of the deaconate, and chairman of several committees including the Vaughan Community Health Service Board.
Dedicated to his community, Hal judged at local parades and Elks Club Spelling Bees; he volunteered for the John Fuller School reading program; he was a board member of Northern Carroll County American Cancer Society Chapter; and a former member of the Gibson Center board of directors.
He was named Carroll County Outstanding Volunteer by Gov. Sununu in 1984.
The family includes his wife of nearly 61 years, Margaret (Durgin) Kenney of North Conway. They would have celebrated their 61st anniversary on August 14, 2001.
Graveside services will be held Aug. 28, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the North Conway Cemetery, with the Rev. G. Alan Baxter, pastor of the First Church of Christ Congregational, officiating. There will be no visiting hours. Donations may be sent to the New Canaan Senior High School Harold S. MILTON, Vt. -- Joseph W. Eaton, 60, formerly of Conway and North Conway, died June 28, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Gail Eaton (Gardner); son Joseph W. Eaton III, of Milton; daughter Vicki Koch, of Westfalls, N.Y.; sisters Mary Garland (Eaton) of California and Andria Price (Beebe) of Maine; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service by David Lloyd will be held Saturday, Aug. 25, at 5 p.m. at the Kearsarge Cemetery.
EFFINGHAM -- George H. Weeks Sr., 92, of Huntress Bridge Road in Effingham, passed away Aug. 20, 2001, at the SunBridge Care of North Conway.
He was born Dec. 11, 1908, in Center Conway, the son of the late William and Lucy (Whittaker) Weeks, and he lived in Center Conway until moving to Effingham in 1943. He had been employed at Frankson's Furniture Company in West Ossipee and later worked at the Kezar Falls Woolen Mills. He was past member of the Kezar Falls Advent Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia (Dewitt) Weeks, of North Conway; a daughter, Mary Ellen Sargent, of Freedom; a son, George H. Weeks Jr., of Effingham; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Calling hours will be Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lord Funeral Home, 50 Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Center Conway Cemetery.
CASCO, Maine -- Verna Garland, 74, of Casco, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at the Bridgton Health Care Center.
She was born in Chatham, NH, the daughter of Frederick and Ruby Stone Garland. She graduated from Dover High School in 1944. Verna lived in Manchester, NH, for many years and worked 30 years for Honeywell Industries as a calibrator. She also worked for Jewell Company and Sylvania, where she was a line boss and a floor boss. She retired at age 63, and in 1985 she came to live in Fryeburg. She had lived in Casco for the past three years.
She is survived by three brothers, Lincoln P. Garland, of Chatham, Clyde F. Garland, of East Conway, and Gene L. Garland, of New Durham; and two sisters, Louise E. Mann, of Conway, and Eleanor M. Cutting, of Lebanon. She was predeceased by a brother, Leonard E. Garland, and a sister, Frances M. Rollins.
A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Wood Funeral Home, 12 Warren Street, Fryeburg. Pastor Donald Fowler will officiate. Burial will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Pine Hill Cemetery in Dover.

WAKEFIELD -- Virginia (Croessant) Rudolph, 84, of Old Stage Road in Wakefield, died Aug. 19, 2001, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.
She was born July 16, 1917, in Reading, Pa., and lived in Pennsylvania and New Jersey before moving to Wakefield in 1976. She was the widow of the late Allen R. Rudolph.
Virginia was a founder and member of the NH Children of the Republic, a constitutional teaching organization in Wakefield.
There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 22, at 1 p.m. at Lord Funeral Home, Route 28 in Wolfeboro. Burial will be in the Lovell Lake Cemetery, Wakefield.
DENMARK, Maine -- Mary Elizabeth Bucknell, 88, of Route 160, Denmark, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at the Bridgton Health Care Center.
She was born in Baldwin, the daughter of Arthur and Bertha Burnell Ridlon, She graduated from Potter Academy in 1930. For 35 years she and her late husband Arthur Bucknell, who died in 1971, owned and ran Bucknell Farm in Denmark. People came from all over to pick Bucknell strawberries. In 1966 they sold the farm to their sons.
Mary was a member and longtime secretary of the Saco Valley Fish and Game, a member of Mount Moriah Chapter O.E.S., the Rebecahs, and the Denmark Extension. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, hooking rugs and especially hunting and fishing.
She is survived by three sons, Franklin A., Roger E., and M. Richard, all of Denmark; two daughters, Elizabeth Hunt of Denmark, and Frances Beckett of Mechanic Falls; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be today (Tuesday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wood Funeral Home, 12 Warren St., Fryeburg. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Denmark Congregational Church with the Rev. Greg Young officiating. Burial will be in Barre Cemetery.

FREEDOM -- Beulah (Schaub) Carlson, 85, died May 20, 2001, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.
She was born in Pennsylvania, Aug. 2, 1915, the daughter of the late Conrad and Martha (Henry) Schaub. Mrs. Carlson moved from New Jersey to Freedom in 1977. She was been a member of the Trinity Reform Church in New Jersey. Beulah's first love was gardening and she spent many hours in her garden.
She was the wife of the late John A. Carlson, who predeceased her in 1994. Her family includes two daughters, Christina Sandhage of Alton Bay, and Karen McClatchle; two grandchildren, Sandra Quinney of Meredith, and Kenneth Sandhage, of Alton; and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Lori Sandhage of Greenfield, Mass.
Lord Funeral Home, 50 Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee, was in charge of arrangements.
TAMWORTH -- Mathew D. Lund, 31, of Chocorua, died Aug. 16, 2001, at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway after a sudden illness.
Born in Kalispell, Mont., the son of John and Wendy (Turgeon) Lund, he lived in Connecticut most of his life before moving to New Hampshire in 1995.
He graduated from the Sound School in New Haven, Conn., in 1988, and attended Southern Connecticut University, studying marine biology and culinary arts.
Mr. Lund had been a building and painting contractor, and he also had been a chef in the Mount Washington Valley. Most recently he owned and operated Lund's Speciality Merchandising Family Business.
The family includes his wife, Gina (Crisante) Lund, of Chocorua; a daughter, Shana M. Lund, and a son, Joshua A. Lund, both of Chocorua; his mother, Wendy L. Lund, of Conway; his father and step-mother, John and Rose Lund, of Reading, Pa.; four brothers, John A. Lund, of Conway, Charles P. Lund, of Bristol, Conn., Michael P. Lund and Christopher R. Lund, both of Reading, Pa.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway, with the Rev. William R. Stockhaus officiating. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

BROWNFIELD -- Iva M. Edwards, 82, died last week at her home in Brownfield.
She was born in Snowville, NH, the daughter of Sewell and Gladys Douglas Johnson, and was educated in Snowville schools. In her early years she worked as a weaver for local mills in the Dover and Durham area. She lived in Washington state for many years and returned to this area in 1980 after the death of her husband, William Edwards. She attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Conway.
She is survived by one son, Fred Sheaff, of Rabun Gap, Ga.; three brothers, William and Arron Johnson, both of Brownfield, and Carroll Johnson, of Intervale; two sisters, Carolyn Day, of Intervale, and Lena Young, of Nashua.
A graveside service will be held Monday, Aug. 20, at 1 p.m. at Snowville Cemetery in Eaton.
Arrangements are with Wood Funeral Home of Fryeburg.
