Mavis Lyons Smull, a documentary film editor and longtime New York City resident, died on Sept. 4, 2001, of congestive heart failure.
Ms. Smull lived in Tamworth for the past 10 years. She was 85.
Born in New York City in 1916, Ms. Smull attended the Birch-Walthen School and Swarthmore College. At the age of 19, she traveled to the then-Soviet Union as a photographer. After living in Mexico for two years, she returned to New York as a professional photographer. There she met her first husband, Eliot Elisofon, the Life photographer.
After the outbreak of World War II, she worked with the Office of War Information in London as a film editor, a profession she continued for the rest of her life. In London, she met her second husband, Jean Lenauer, film editor and critic.
Her film credits include episodes of the 1950s television documentary series "The Twentieth Century" (anchored by Walter Cronkite) and numerous documentary specials for CBS and ABC. In the early '70s, she worked for the Learning Corporation of America where she was the senior editor for many educational films. In 1978, she and her husband William Smull, the architect, moved to Boston where she worked at WGBH on such projects as "Joan Robinson: One Woman's Story," "A Man, A Plan, A Canal, Panama," "Mystery of the Masterbuilders," 'Vietnam: A Television History," and 'The Disappeared." Other credits include "Jack Levine: A Feast of Pure Reason," "Halftime: Five Yale Men at Midlife," "Being Different," and a number of short documentaries for the anthropologist Joanna Spector. She was an officer and active member of the Motion Picture Editors Guild.
Ms. Smull is survived by her husband, William Smull; her son Michael Lenauer; her stepchildren, Tony Smull and Julia Lennen; and her grandchildren, Serena Lenauer and Jacob Lennen.
Donald J. Hodgdon, 81, of Silver Lake, died Sept. 7, 2001, at the Maine Medical Center after a brief illness.
Don was born in Northumberland on Aug. 31, 1920, son of H. Dewey and Hazel McIntyre Hodgdon. He was raised in Milan.
During World War II he worked for Pratt and Whitney in Worcester, Mass., building airplane parts. After the war he returned to Milan and worked for his father and then as an independent truck and school bus owner and operator. He served on the Milan Volunteer Fire Department, and for a time housed the fire trucks in his garage. He served as Milan selectman for nine years. He moved to the Concord area in 1960, where he owned and operated a Snap-On Tool Franchise. After his retirement in 1983 he moved to the Conway, Fryeburg, Silver Lake area.
Don is predeceased by his first wife of 39 years, Jenny Jansen Hodgdon, who died in 1980; his parents; and his sister, Ellen Hodgdon Clement.
He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Doris (Wright) Hodgdon of Silver Lake; his daughter Kay Hodgdon Warren of Concord; his son Lary Hodgdon of Contoocook; two grandchildren, Kristine Taylor Harvey of Boscawen and Jessica Taylor Salach of Raymond; two step-daughters, Deborah Ryan-Dolleman of Kittery, Maine, and Betsy Eaton of Freedom; four step-grandchildren, Kim Ryan, Stacy Prinz, Barry and Jeanette Eaton; two great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
There will be no calling hours or funeral services.
Donations may be made to the American Heart Association; no flowers please.
Interment will be in the Pembroke Evergreen Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

John R. Moss, 77, of Glen passed away Monday, September 3, 2001. He was born on June 21, 1924 in Putnam, Conn., the son of the late John H. and Catherine Russell Moss, of Boothbay Harbor, Maine.
He graduated from Moses Brown High School in Providence, R.I., in 1942, and entered the Army Air Corps as a bombardier, First Lieutenant, ETO, from 1943 to 1945.
He earned an AB in chemistry-zoology in 1948 from Dartmouth College and a diploma in medical sciences from Dartmouth Medical School in 1950. In 1952, he graduated from the University of Virginia with work in geology, later attending the University of Miami where he completed graduate work in marine biology and oceanography.
He was employed by the Portland Pipe Line corp., Portland, Maine, as an engineer from 1952 to 1962. He went on to teach biology, physical science, geology, earth science, and mathematics in Florida schools for nearly 20 years. He moved to the Mount Washington Valley in 1986, working alongside his son for over 18 years, the last eight of which were spent as a local signmaker in Jackson.
John is survived by three sons: Eben R. Moss and daughter-in-law Brenda of Jackson, Michael D. Moss of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and Ian L. Moss of Tamworth; two grandchildren, Eben D. Moss and Jesse O. Moss.

Catherine "Kay" Lockwood of Lady Lake, Fla. died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001.
Born in Long Island, N.Y., she moved from Glen to Lady Lake in 1978.
A member of the Weirsdale Presbyterian Church, she was a charter member of The Eastern Slope Emblem Club of Supreme Emblem Club USA.
A retired treasurer/bookkeeper for The Jack Frost Ski Shop in Jackson, she was an active quilling crafter, played cribbage and enjoyed cooking.
She is survived by her husband, Howard A. Lockwood Jr., of Lady Lake, Fla.; daughters Isabelle L. Bourrie of Exton, Penn., Phyllis L. Geiger of Jacksonville, Fla., Nancy L. Whitcomb of Shrewsbury, Mass., and Laurel L. Bradshaw, of Worcester, Mass.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Fenton W. Varney Sr., of Melvin Village, passed away Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001 at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro at the age of 81. He was born June 13, 1920 in Scituate, Mass., the son of the late George W. and Olive (Blake) Varney. He graduated from Scituate High School in 1937 and later earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University in 1942. Fenton was employed at the Wright Aeronautical Corporation, B29 Aircraft Engine Development Division in Woodbridge, N.J. from 1942 to 1945. He later served as a Merchant Marine until 1946, at which point he joined the New England Electric System, where he held management positions at Narragansett Electric Co., Providence, R.I. and Massachusetts Electric Co., North Andover, Mass., the company he retired as Vice President of in July 1985.
After his retirement he and his wife moved to Naples, Fla. where they made their home for 10 years before moving to Melvin Village. He was a lifetime member of the First Congregational Church in Scituate, Mass.
Fenton is survived by his wife June D. (Secor) Varney of Melvin Village; a son Fenton W. Varney Jr. and his wife Ivena of Melvin Village; a grandson, Fenton W. Varney III, also of Melvin Village; and several cousins. He was predeceased by a son, Blake M. Varney, in 1997.
At his request there will be no calling hours. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. at the Melvin Village Community Church, Melvin Village. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Scituate, Mass. at the convenience of the family.

Robert A. Sheppard, 58, of Chocorua passed away Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001 at his home. He was born June 1, 1943 in North Conway and had lived in Center Conway for several years before moving to Chocorua in 1978. Robert had been employed as a patrolman for the State of New Hampshire Department of Transportation, District III for 16 years, retiring last year.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Violet (Eldridge) Sheppard of Chocorua; his children, William Sheppard of Silver Lake, Patty Norcross of South Tamworth, Mary-Anne Lane of Conway, Dorothy Donaldson of Albany, and Charlotte Hernandez of North Fryeburg; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a sister, Rachel Beattie of Tamworth; and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by a son, Boyd Speckman, in 1971.
Calling hours will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lord Funeral Home, 50 Moultonville Road, Center Ossipee. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Chocorua Cemetery, Chocorua.
CONWAY -- Joan L. Elliott, 77, of North Conway died Aug. 28, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Portland, Maine, following a long illness.
Born in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of John and Rose (Clayman) Unger, she grew up in Fairview, N.J., lived in Magnolia, N.J., for 20 years, in Williamstown, N.J., for 10 years and in Oaklyn, N.J., for five years before moving to North Conway in 1999.
She worked for 20 years in the accounting department at Strawbridge & Clothier Department Store in Philadelphia.
Mrs. Elliott had been a member of the Magnolia Women's Club and had been a 4-H leader in Magnolia.
The family includes two daughters, Nancy J. Armstrong of North Conway and Roseann E. Green of Pine Hill, N.J.; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a brother, Howard Unger of Glassboro, N.J.; and several nieces and a nephew.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in North Conway with the Rev. Laurence Brown, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the North Conway Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m., in the church, prior to service.

FRYEBURG - Melba Hutchins, 84, of Stuart, Fla., died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, at the Fryeburg Health Care Center.
She was born in Kezar Falls, Maine, the daughter of Willis and Gladys McDaniels Thomes. She graduated from Porter High School. Melba was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Disable American Veterans' Auxiliary and attended the Fryeburg New Church. She worked many years for the old Blacksmith Restaurant in Fryeburg and later worked for Northland Shoe Company.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Thomas W. Hutchins, of Fryeburg; one sister, Muriel Adams, of Yarmouth, Maine; and one brother, Lyford Thomas, of Fryeburg.
A graveside service will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Pine Grove Cemetery in Fryeburg, with Rev. Kenneth Turley officiating.

CONWAY -- Brian L. Quint Sr., 41, of Conway, died Aug. 25, 2001, at his home following a sudden illness.
Born in North Conway, the son of Burnham and Rebecca (Allen) Quint Sr., he was a lifelong resident of Conway. He graduated from Kennett High School, class of 1977, and had been employed in the family business, B.E. Quint and Sons, for the past 24 years.
He was a member of the Mount Washington Lodge 87, F. &A.M., in North Conway.
The family includes his wife, Sheila (O'Connor) Quint, of Conway; a son, Brian L. Quint Jr., of Conway; a daughter, Crystal A. Quint, of Conway; his parents, of Conway; a brother, Burnham E. Quint Jr., of Conway; four sisters, Eleanor Bryant, of Redstone, Ila Pry, of New Britain, Conn., Charlene Patch, of Glen, and Almeda Quint, of Connecticut; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Conway Village Cemetery, with the Rev. Katherine Russo, pastor of the Conway United Methodist Church, officiating. Visiting hours will be today (Tuesday) from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway.

CONWAY -- J. Richard Herzog, 50, of Conway and Winchester, Mass., died suddenly on Aug. 23, 2001, in Hampton of heart failure.
He was born in Arlington, Mass., and was a graduate of Winchester High School and St. Mary's School in Winchester. He lived in Conway the past 30 years and was a self-employed business man.
He is survived by brothers John C., of Wakefield, and Leslie J. Jr., of Winchester; a twin sister, Mary Ellen Batchelor, of Winchester; his step-mother, Virginia A. Herzog, of Winchester; close friend Mary Welch, of Conway; and nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be Sunday, Aug. 26, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Lane Funeral Home in Winchester. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church in Winchester on Monday, Aug. 27, at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the Wildwood Cemetery in Winchester.
