Helen Woodbury
PORTSMOUTH - Helen Woodbury, 96, of Portsmouth, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Sunbridge of Portsmouth after a period of declining health.
Born on Dec. 4, 1906, in Newton, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Fannie (Tufts) Langdon Spring. She was a parishioner and very active at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. In her spare time she enjoyed doing needlework.
WOODBURY - Helen Woodbury, 96, of Portsmouth, died Jan. 21, 2003. Burial will take place in the spring at Forest Hill Cemetery in Forest Hill, Mass.
The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of the arrangements.

Ruth W. Niles
WINTHROP, Maine - Ruth W. Niles, 75, of Sturtevant Hill in Readfield, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Nicholson's Nursing Home, where she had resided for the past 15 years due to multiple sclerosis.
Ruth was born June 5, 1927, in Portsmouth, N.H., the daughter of George Layton and Mary Papineau Wilson.
Her family then moved to Kittery, where Ruth attended the Kittery Schools and graduated from Traip Academy in the Class of 1945.
She joined Charles Robert Niles in marriage on May 10, 1946; they made their home in Monmouth, before moving to Readfield in 1978. She was predeceased by Charles on Nov. 21, 1983.
Ruth worked as a certified nurse’s aide at Knowles Nursing Home, now known as the Heritage Rehabilitation in Winthrop, and then Nicholson's Nursing Home in Winthrop for a number of years until her retirement.
Ruth was a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, a Girl Scout Leader, coached basketball at the Wales Youth Center, she was a terrific swimmer, loved the outdoors and animals.
She is survived by two sons, Dan Niles of Monmouth, and Charles Niles and his wife, Lisa, of Bowdoinham; two daughters, Caroline Lynch and her husband, Phil, of Biddeford, and Susan Leighton Niles of Sabattus; seven grandchildren, Lindsay, Nicole and Michelle Niles, Philip Lynch and his wife, Sarah, Jessica Daigneault and her husband, David, Mandy Favreau and her husband, James, and Craig Bennett; four great-grandchildren; one brother, David Wilson and his wife, Priscilla, of Rye, N.H.
She was predeceased by two brothers Fred and William Wilson.
NILES - Ruth W. Niles, 74, of Readfield, Maine, died Jan. 22, 2003. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, at Bragdon-Finley Funeral Home, 707 Main St., Monmouth, Maine. Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m., Tuesday. Interment will be in the spring at the East Monmouth Cemetery, Monmouth, Maine. Marjorie Frances (White) Dixon
DOVER - Funeral services for Marjorie Frances (White) Dixon, 81, of 276 County Farm Road, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Wednesday. The Rev. Donald Gum, pastor, of the Calvary Baptist Church, in Portsmouth, officiated. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, New Castle, in the spring.
Jean Elaine (York) Marr
KITTERY, Maine - Jean Elaine (York) Marr, 71, of Harris Ave in Kittery, died on Wednesday Jan. 22, 2003, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital following a period of failing health.
Born in Portland, Maine, on April 13, 1931, she was a daughter of Karl and Elsie (Welch) York. She grew up in and attended schools in Scarborough, Maine, graduating from Scarborough High School with the class of 1949.
She was married to her husband of over 52 years, Richard E. Marr Sr., on Feb. 27, 1950. In 1967 they moved to Kittery, where they raised their family and made their home for the last 36 years.
Over the years Mrs. Marr was active at gardening around her home and enjoyed crocheting; she was also a member of the Downeast Square Dancing Club for many years. Most recently she became computer literate, spending time researching the family genealogy, producing a Thanksgiving journal and sending frequent e-mails to family and friends. An avid swimmer she was able to pass on her gift to her grandchildren and other family members, teaching them to become excellent swimmers.
Mrs. Marr worked as a waitress and hostess for the former Valley’s Restaurant in Kittery for many years and retired as an inspector at Watts Fluid Air in Kittery.
After retirement she and her husband enjoyed many summers at their property on Moosehead Lake. Her first love was her family, she is survived by her husband, Richard E. Marr of Kittery; daughters, Pamela Ann Chick and her husband, Ronald of South Berwick, Karla Kingsbury and her husband, Richard of Middleton, N.H.; a son, Richard E. Marr Jr. and his wife, Sherri Frisbee-Marr of Kittery; a grandson, Ian Lovering and his wife, Carrie; two granddaughters, Kelly Lovering and Greta Jean Brooks and her husband, Joseph Brooks; and one great-great-grandson, Joseph Brooks Jr.; two sisters-in-law, Sylvia York and Edith Oates; three brothers-in-law, Clayton, Franklin and Donald Marr. She is also survived by several dear nieces and nephews with whom she enjoyed spending time. Mrs. Marr was predeceased by her brother John York.
Joseph N. Shaw
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mr. Joseph N. Shaw, 65, of 888 Greenland Road, Portsmouth, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, Wednesday, with services at the Greenland Community Congregational Church. The Rev. Douglas Carter, pastor, officiated. Mr. Todd Monsell was organist.
In attendance were members of the church and former classmates from Portsmouth High School, Class of 1955. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery, Stratham, in the spring. Bearers were Mark Shaw, Michael Kelley, Jim Robinson, Don Lord, Jim Nigzus, Ted Felton, and John Landry.
Charles "Andy" Fairhurst
ALAMOGORDO, N.M. - Charles "Andy" Fairhurst, 44, of Alamogordo, died suddenly at his home in Alamogordo, on Jan. 14, 2003.
The son of the late Betty and James Fairhurst, he was a long-time resident of southern New Hampshire.
He is survived by his son, Jimmy of Dover, N.H.; sisters, Mary of New Mexico, and Terry of Washington, who will hold his memory in their hearts; brothers, Patrick, Skip and family of Dover, Michael and family of Massachusetts, James of Alamogordo; and ex-wife, Karen of Dover; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
Martin J. "Matt" Hegarty
PORTSMOUTH - Largely attended funeral services for Martin J. "Matt" Hegarty, 67, of 202 Highland Street, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Tuesday, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church in Portsmouth.
The Rev. Timothy O’Donnell was celebrant. Placing of the pall by son, Matthew Hegarty. Placing of the crucifix was done by brother, Robert Hegarty. Presentation of the gifts were offered by his children, Maureen Cotrupi and Kevin Hegarty. Acoloytes were Ryan Kickhafer, Stephen King, Michael Dwyer, and David Keenan.
Words of remembrance were given by his wife, Christine (Frawley) Hegarty. Readings were given by his daughter, Kathleen McNally and brother, John Hegarty. The Contemporary Music Ministry, directed by Tim Lena, performed.
In attendance were communicants of the church and a large delegation of family, friends, and business associates. Burial will be in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, in the spring. Bearers were Robert Hegarty, John Hegarty, Tom Hegarty, Kevin Hegarty, and Matthew Hegarty. Wake services were held at the funeral home, Monday, by Rev. Timothy O’Donnell.
Kathleen M. (Huby) Shaw
AYER, Mass. - Mrs. Kathleen M. (Huby) Shaw, 90, widow of Mahlon W. Shaw, of 400 Groton Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at the Apple Valley Nursing Home in Ayer, Mass.
She was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Jan. 23, 1912, the daughter of Charles G. and Edith M. (Maddick) Huby. Mrs. Shaw was a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church in Maynard, Mass., and the Order of Eastern Star in Maynard, Mass. She loved to read and enjoyed embroidery.
Survivors include her son, William M. Shaw of Groton; her daughter, Diane Gerlarneau of Seabrook, N.H.; four grandchildren, Sandra Caswell of Pepperell, Karen Silva of Groton, Paul McMullen of Covington, Wash., and Andrew McMullen of Marysville, Wash.; three great-grandchildren, Brittany and Ryan Caswell and Rachel Silva; one niece and three nephews.
Gertrude E. Hammond
PORTSMOUTH - Miss Gertrude E. Hammond, 97, of 346 Pleasant Street, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth. She was born in Eliot, Maine, Dec. 14, 1905, the daughter of George E. and Emily (Spinney) Hammond. Miss Hammond was a graduate of Eliot High School and the University of Maine, Class of 1927. Prior to her retirement in 1942, she was employed as a teacher for Eliot High School.
She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church of Portsmouth, including the Altar Guild of the Church; A.A.R.P.; National Cathedral Association; and Strawbery Banke, Inc..
There are no known survivors.
Eugene Arthur Gerry
KITTERY, Maine - Eugene Arthur Gerry, 69, of Dame Street in Kittery, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Kittery on the family farm on Wilson Road on Feb. 28, 1933, he was a life-long resident of Kittery, first on the family farm and for the last 40 years on Dame Street. He was a graduate of R.W. Traip Academy in Kittery.
He was married to his wife, Janice (Marshall) Gerry, for over 40 years until her death in 1998.
Mr. Gerry was employed at Simplex in Newington and National Sea Products in Portsmouth as a line worker. He had a great love of the out doors. He enjoyed bird watching and taking walks in the woods.
His first love was his family, his wife, children, grand and great-grand children, and his sisters, with whom he was very close and who played a large role in his life. He will be missed by those, who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his children: a son, John Clifford Gerry and his wife, Lauren of Port Orchard, Wash.; his daughters, Lorinda Keefe and her partner, Aurelia Delisle of Madbury, N.H., and Christina Connell of Kittery; six grandchildren, Michael and Shannon Keefe, Alexander and Benjamin Gerry, Amanda Gerry and Stephen Connell; his beloved sisters, Virginia "Gin" and her husband, William Rollins of Eliot, Marjorie Johndrow of Kittery, Sylvia Grogan of Kittery, and Linda and her husband, Fred Lytle of York; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
GERRY - Eugene A. Gerry, 69, of Dame Street in Kittery, died Friday Jan. 24, 2003, at his home. A funeral will be held on Tuesday Jan. 28, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home at 125 Old Post Road in Kittery. Friends may visit with Mr. Gerry's family on Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. James F. Fallon
HAMPTON FALLS - The funeral for James F. Fallon, 70, of 102 Lafayette Road was held Saturday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.
The Rev. Wesley Burwell, chaplain of the Seacoast Hospice, officiated. Words of remembrance were offered by his sons, James P. Fallon and Jeffrey J. Fallon, his wife, Mary-Jane Fallon, and several grandchildren. Private burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Marie T. Marshall
KENSINGTON - Marie T. Marshall, 73, of 238 Amesbury Road, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at her residence.
She was born in Huntington, W.Va., Oct. 20, 1929 the daughter of the late John W. Dan and Mary (Buck) Diaz.
Mrs. Marshall was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy in Wheeling, W. Va., and the W. Va. Business College in Charleston.
She was the wife of the late Harrel Lilly, who died in 1960. With her husband, she operated Lilly’s Auto Body in Charleston for many years, where she worked as the office manager and bookkeeper.
Her second husband, Byron F. Marshall, predeceased her in 1984.
Family member include two sons, Robert L. Lilly of Salisbury, Mass., and Stephen M. Lilly of Hampton; three daughters, Carolyn M. Chapman of Dover, Sharon L. Homan of Mt. Holly, Pa., and Connie S. Simmons of Kensington; one sister, Mary N. Holstein of Belle, W. Va.; nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
MARSHALL - Marie T. Marshall, 73, of 238 Amesbury Road, Kensington, died Jan. 24, 2003. Emery Ball Jr
ELIOT, Maine - Funeral services for Orin Emery Ball Jr., who died Friday Jan. 17, 2003, were held Friday Jan. 24, at the Eliot Methodist Church with the Rev. Ronald F. Messer officiating.
In attendance were members of the church, members of the Eliot Lions Club headed by John Lippincott and many friends and neighbors.
John Lippincott spoke of Mr. Ball’s many achievements in the Lions Club, including 20 years of perfect attendance.
The Homily was given by the Reverend Messer.
Burial will be in the spring at Mount Pleasant Cemetery at a time to be announced.
Following the service a time of fellowship was held in Fellowship Hall hosted by the ladies of the church.
Services were under the direction of Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery Maine.
Michael Kuchtey
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Michael Kuchtey, 88, of Portsmouth, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Saturday, with services held at the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth.
The Rev. Vivan Martindale, pastor, officiated. Personal reflections were given by Richard Kuchtey, Kimberly Bosma, Joan Gittlein, Jerry Gittlein, Michael Kutchey, Lisa Kutchey, Anne Marie Kutchey, and for Kelly Gittlein, Kevin Bosma. Vocalist was Mary Lou Arsidy and Judy Kish was organist. In attendance were members of the Church and former business associates. Burial will be in the spring.
Joseph Montmarquet
KITTERY, Maine - A funeral for Joseph Montmarquet of Kittery, who died on Sunday Jan. 19, 2003, at his home, was held on Friday, Jan. 24, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery.
Monsignor Burns of St. Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church in Portsmouth officiated, and kind words of remembrance and a beautiful song were offered by his grand daughter Savannah. Some of his favorite hymns were played on the organ by Ellen Parent.
All were invited for a time of refreshment and sharing at the Montmarquet home following the service. Burial will take place in the spring in First Parish Cemetery in York. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
Althea Fernald
KITTERY, Maine - A funeral for Althea Fernald of Kittery, who died on Jan. 16, 2003, in Portsmouth, was held on Tuesday Jan. 21, 2003, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
The Rev. Dr. David Avery of the First Congregational Church of Eliot officiated. Several of her favorite hymns were sung by New England’s own gospel singer Ken Fernald, accompanied by Barbara Kenny on the organ. A Poem entitled "I Will Leave You," which was written by Mrs. Fernald, was offered by Rev. Avery to all in attendance. Everyone was invited for a time of refreshment and sharing following the service.
Burial will take place in the Kittery Point Baptist Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to the J. S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
Arthur W. Fernald
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Arthur W. Fernald, 75, of 23 Sheffield Road, Portsmouth, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Saturday, with services held at the North Church Parish House Chapel, in Portsmouth.
The Rev. Dawn A. Shippee, senior pastor, officiated. June Parker was organist. In attendance were members of the church and representatives from the Portsmouth School Department, Portsmouth Public Works Department, Portsmouth Garden Club, and the Morley Company.
Burial will be in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, in the spring. Honorary bearers were Paul Geraci, James Marchese, Tom Broadhurst, Vincent Marchese Sr., Robert V. Fernald, Ralph Woodman, John Reardon, and Bud Polazzi.
Marion E. "Dolly" Goodwin
NORTH HAMPTON - Marion E. "Dolly" Goodwin, 88, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Webster at Rye.
She was born in Watertown, Mass., on June 15, 1914, a daughter of the late William S. and Jennie E. (Davidson) Murray, and graduated from Watertown High School with the Class of 1932.
She moved to North Hampton in 1949 from Portsmouth. She worked as a postal clerk in the North Hampton Post Office from 1958 through 1976. She was a member of the United Church of Christ and the Ladies Union, and was a former choir member at the church.
She was the wife of the late Newman G. Goodwin Sr., who died in 1990. She was also predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.
Family members include three sons, Newman G. "Skip" Goodwin Jr., of North Hampton; David M. Goodwin, of White River Junction, Vt., and William P. Goodwin, of Valley Falls, N.Y.; a daughter, Sharon L. Higgins, of Exeter; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
GOODWIN - Marion E. "Dolly" Goodwin, 88, of North Hampton, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003. Services will be held at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. A calling hour, starting at 10 a.m., will precede the service. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial will be in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton.
