Samuel A. McMaster
PORTSMOUTH - Samuel A. McMaster, 80, died on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
A longtime Portsmouth real estate broker and former city councilor, he was born in Portsmouth on Aug. 11, 1922, to the late John D. and Marie (Redish) McMaster.
He was a lifelong resident and a well-known businessman and politician in the community. His Scot heritage originated from Creignish, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, where the name is still MacMaster. His father and uncle migrated to Portsmouth in the early 1900s to begin their families.
He was the fourth of five children, survived by his brother, John J. McMaster of West Newton, Mass.; and two sisters, Elizabeth Black of Portsmouth and Marie Fernald of Lancaster, Calif.
He attended St. Patrick’s School and was a member of Portsmouth High School’s Class of 1941. He was a founding parishioner of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Portsmouth.
He joined the war effort like so many of his generation in 1942, beginning with basic training at Camp Blanding, Fla., and maneuvers in Tennessee with the 30th "Old Hickory" Infantry Division. With his fellow comrades-in-arms, he was shipped out to England in February 1944. Further training was conducted in England in preparation for the "D-Day" invasion of Normandy. His division crossed the English Channel on June 11, 1944, landing on the beaches of Normandy as part of "Operation Overlord" for the battle of St. Lo. On July 18, 1944, in St. Mere Eglise, France, he was severely wounded by a German mortar shell. He spent the next few years in and out of hospitals in England and the United States. He eventually was transferred to Cushing General Hospital, Framingham, Mass., where he met and fell in love with his Army nurse, Lt. Lucille E. Berard, whom he married in 1946. Returning to Portsmouth, which he lovingly referred to as "God’s Country," they started a family and raised seven children together. In 1996, after 50 years of marriage, his beloved wife and nurse passed away.
Upon his return to Portsmouth, he started his own business at 562 Islington St. - Sam McMaster Real Estate and Insurance Agency - across from his good friend and former mayor, the late John Leary, who owned and operated Leary’s Market. Sam spent many years with John in the local political arena.
He was a Portsmouth city councilor for 16 years, serving on numerous council committees. He was also involved in state and national politics. He ran for state senator and was involved with the campaigns of U.S. Senators Thomas McIntire and Estes Kefauver, attending the national convention in Chicago, Ill., in 1952. He was an active member and past president of the Seacoast Board of Realtors. In 1981 the business name changed to The Sam and John McMaster Agency and relocated to 116 Middle St., Haymarket Square, where it still thrives today. He continued working right up to the time of his death after more than 50 years as a local real estate owner/broker.
He belonged to many local clubs and fraternal organizations, including Knights of Columbus, the Elks and the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans. He recently celebrated his 50-year membership with the Elks Lodge of Portsmouth. For many years he served as the commander of the Piscataqua Chapter 4 D.A.V. and most recently served on the executive board.
His greatest passion was his family. His love for his children and grandchildren made his life complete. He taught them that anything is possible with hard work and a positive attitude, as was demonstrated through his own life.
He is survived by his loving children: John N. McMaster, Marie L. Kauten, Christopher M. McMaster and Jeannette E. MacDonald, of Portsmouth, Samuel A. McMaster Jr., of Albuquerque, N.M., Donald "Jay" McMaster, of Aurora, Colo., and LuAnne M. Wells, of Spokane, Wash.; 27 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
