Emmons E. Pevear

HAMPTON FALLS – Emmons E. Pevear, 92 of 6 Pevear Lane, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at Langdon Place in Exeter.

He was born in Hampton Falls, Feb. 18, 1910, the son of the late

Daniel E. and Florence (Hickford) Pevear.

Mr. Pevear was a lifelong resident of Hampton Falls. He was a self-employed poultry farmer and for several years worked as a boat builder for Manson Boats in Salisbury, Mass.

He had been an active member of the Hampton Falls Volunteer Fire Department for many years.

He was the husband of the late Helen D. (Weare) Pevear, who died in 1999, and was predeceased by six brothers, Harold, Eben, Albert, William, Ira, Charles, and one sister, Florence Briggs.

He is survived by one brother, Edward Pevear of Exeter and Rumney, Maine, and many nieces and nephews.

PEAVER - Emmons E. Pevear of 6 Pevear Lane, Hampton Falls, died Nov. 28, 2002. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton on Sunday from 12 to 1 p.m. A graveside service will follow in the West View Cemetery, Hampton Falls at 1:30 p.m.

Ralph J. Bolyard Jr.

SOMERSWORTH -- Ralph J. "Hillbilly" Bolyard Jr., 61, of High Street, formerly of Love Lane in Kittery, Maine, died Thursday Nov. 28, 2002 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, following a period of failing health.

Born in Amboy, W.Va., he was a son of Ralph J. Sr. and Ruby Alberta (Wotring). He attended local schools and graduated from Aurora High School.

A self-employed truck driver from his teen years, Hillbilly, as he was known throughout the country, worked hard providing for the family he dearly loved. His easygoing and upfront demeanor allowed him to make many friends throughout the country, as he drove from destination to destination.

His first love was his family who will miss him dearly, they include his wife, Sharon Bolyard, of Somersworth; their children: sons, James Camarato and his wife, Mimi, of Farmington, and Anthony Camarato and his wife, Stephanie, of Somersworth; daughters, Sharon Ann Grant of Somersworth, Kim Dube and her husband, Bob, of Farmington, Claydia Grant and her husband, Pete Benoit, of Boscawen; sisters, Mary Katherine Sypolt of West Virginia, and Judy Kay Turner of Maryland; brothers Ira "Eddie" Bolyard of Texas, Melvin Eugene Bolyard of New Jersey, Robert Lee Bolyard of Virginia, Fredrick Allen Bolyard of West Virginia; grandchildren James III and Richard M. Camarato, Coty and Miriah Smith, Katlin Camarato, Natasha and Thomas "TJ" Larson, Aaron, Jacob and Matthew Small, Bobbie and John Paul Dube, Jesse Lee Grant, Dakota Jade Benoit and Jamie Lee and Adam Camarato.

BOLYARD - Ralph J, "Hillbilly" Bolyard Jr., 61, of High Street in Somersworth, died Nov. 28, 2002. A funeral will be held on Tuesday at 1 p.m., at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, in Kittery, Maine. Friends may visit with Hillbilly’s family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey funeral Home of Kittery.

Beatrice D’Alfonso

YORK, Maine - Beatrice (Postill) D’Alfonso, 72, of Organug Road, died peacefully on Nov. 28, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a long illness.

She was born in Manchester, England, on May 4, 1930, the daughter of Bert and Mary (Madden) Postill. She attended school at the Monastery of St. Francis in Gorton, Manchester, England.

She and her husband, R. Leo D’Alfonso, were married for 52 years. They traveled extensively while in the U.S. Air Force, including England, France and many areas of the U.S. Of all the places she had been to, she wanted to retire in York, which they did in 1975.

She was a past president and long-time member of the York Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6977 Women’s Auxiliary. She also worked at the Dinner Bell on Route 1. She was well known for her large annual yard sale plus going to, and enjoying, her Saturday morning yard sale outings. During her many stays at Portsmouth Hospital, she made many friends. Their thoughtful, loving care is greatly appreciated.

She will be remembered for being a loving, caring and giving person. Her top priorities were family and friends.

In addition to her husband, R. Leo D’Alfonso of York, she is survived by sons, Damian and wife, Loretta, of Tucson, Ariz., and Tony and wife, Donna, of Acton; two daughters, Marie Winslow and husband, Tom, of Lebanon, Maine; and Katy Sarters of Berwick; three grandsons, Christopher and Brian D’Alfonso of Colorado, and David Sarters of New Hampshire; two granddaughters, Shannon Saucier and husband, Randy, of New Hampshire, and Erika Sarters of New Hampshire; a brother, Phillip Postill and wife, Ethel, of Manchester, England; her pride and joy, great-granddaughter, Caitlin Carignan of New Hampshire; and several nieces and nephews in England.

D’ALFONSO - Beatrice P. D’Alfonso, 72, of Organug Road, York, Maine, died Nov. 28, 2002, in Portsmouth. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 7 p.m. on Monday, followed by a funeral service at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Ritualistic services by the VFW Women’s Auxiliary will be conducted prior to the funeral service. Interment will be at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3, in the First Parish Cemetery, York.

Methyl M. Morrow

KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services for Methyl M. Morrow of Kittery, who died on Nov. 23, 2002 were held on Friday November 29, 2002 at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.

The Rev. Brad Hirst of the Second Christian Church in Kittery officiated. In attendance were family, friends, former co-workers and neighbors.

Rev. Hirst offered fond words of remembrance and passages of scripture. Words of remembrance about life growing up with Aunt Mety were offered by her niece Sherilyn Higgins on behalf of her family.

Burial took place in Highland Cemetery in Kittery in the Morrow family lot.

Pallbearers included Garrett Morrow, Bruce Morrow, Lindy Higgins, Thomas McCabe, Gary McCabe, Mark McCabe and Steve Heguy. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Anderson L. Hart

WINDHAM - Anderson L. Hart, age 88, of Windham, formerly of Rye, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at his home.

He was born in Ayers Village, Mass., and graduated from Lawrence (Mass.) High School. He attended sheet metal trade school in Lowell, Mass.

Mr. Hart owned and operated Rye Sheet Metal in Rye for many years. He was also the lead man in the sheet metal shop at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Mr. Hart was a professional round-dance teacher, and traveled all over the United States. He was very active with Boy Scout Troop 181 in Rye, and served as Scoutmaster. He enjoyed camping and fishing.

He was predeceased by his wife, Florence (Rowe) Hart.

He is survived by his son, Robert A. Hart and his wife, JoAnn, of Rye; his companion, Joanne M. Walter of Windham; one sister, Frances Emery of Haverhill, Mass.; two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be private for the family. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are by the Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main St., Salem.

RYAN - Kimberly J. Ryan, 35, of Commercial Street in Kittery, Maine, died suddenly on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at her home. A time of sharing and remembrance during which friends may visit with Kimberley’s family will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 30, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine. Please omit flowers; donations may be made in her memory to (C.A.S.A.) Court Appointed Special Advocates, P.O. Box 1327, Manchester, NH 03105. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery, Maine.

Peter P. Giera

BOW - Peter Paul Giera, 47, died Nov. 28, 2002, at the Parkland Medical Center in Derry.

He was born June 10, 1955, in Beverly, Mass., the son of Stephen Giera and Joan (McGeoghan) Emerson. He was a graduate of Coe Brown High School, Class of 1974. He played high school baseball and was a member of the 1974 state champion team.

He formerly owned and operated his own business called Broad Cove Builders based in Hopkinton. He was also employed for many years as a master carpenter at the local union in Portsmouth. He greatly enjoyed ice hockey, a game that both of his sons play, and he also had a love of animals.

In addition to his mother of Hernando, Fla., he is survived by his wife of 11 years, Julie Giera of Bow; two sons, Ryan and Kevin Giera of Bow; his daughter, Megan Giera of Bow; one brother, Theodore Giera of Hernando; two sisters, Pamela Hall of Sandown and Patricia Giera of Hernando; five nieces and nephews, Holly and Michael Hall of Sandown, Patricia Giera, Wesley Dunn, and Stephanie Giera of Hernando.

GIERA - Peter Paul Giera, 47, of Bow, died Nov. 28, 2002, in Derry. Calling hours will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Prospect Cemetery in Epping.

McNAIR - Sheila M. McNair, 57, of 579 Sagamore Ave., Portsmouth, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Unitarian Universalist Church (South Church), 292 State St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, One Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, NH 03756-0001; or to the Dr. Peter Black Research Fund, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, 75 Francis St., Boston, MA 02115.

Sheila M. McNair

PORTSMOUTH - Sheila M. McNair, 57, died Nov. 30, 2002, at her home in the company of close relatives and friends.

She was born and raised in Easton, Pa. In 1970 she moved to the Boston area and spent the next 32 years living and working in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

She graduated from Notre Dame High School in Easton, Pa., and she attended Stonehill College and Katherine Gibbs School in Massachusetts. Most recently, with her husband, she co-founded and operated First Prize Marketing and Flex America, two companies in Portsmouth.

She participated in philanthropic activities including Seacoast Big Brothers and Big Sisters of New Hampshire, Jan’s House of Hope, AIDS Response-Seacoast, Friends of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center board of advisors.

She is survived by her husband, John R. McNair, and her grandson, Maxwell J. McNair, of Portsmouth; her son and daughter, William J. Heffner Jr. and Melissa Howell, of Boston, Mass.; her granddaughter, Marie Howell, of Suisun City, Calif.; her sister, Susan Hechler, of Hull, Mass.; plus several other family members living in the Easton, Pa., area.

Emmons E. Pevear

HAMPTON FALLS - The funeral for Emmons E. Pevear, 92, of Pevear Lane, who died Nov. 28, 2002, was held Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. Services were conducted in the West View Cemetery. The Rev. Kenneth G. Lawrence, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiated. Pallbearers were Peter Russell, Stephen Russell, William Andrews, Everett Weare, Albert Weare and Alex Weare.

Irma Talbert Hodgeman

PORTSMOUTH - Irma Talbert Hodgeman, 87, died Dec. 1, 2002, at the Mark Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.

She was born July 13, 1915, in Walden, Vt., a daughter of Royce and Ruth (Perkins) Talbert. She graduated from Cabot High School, Class of 1933, where she enjoyed music and basketball. She graduated from Vermont Seminary in Montpelier and worked for the state of Vermont as administrative assistant to the secretary of education. She moved to East Montpelier, where she met and married Marshall Hodgeman. She was bookkeeper for Hodgeman Appliance and town auditor for the town of East Montpelier for many years.

She was active in 4-H and the Old Brick Church, serving as choir director and as a lifelong member of the Old Brick Church Club. She was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed her East Montpelier home and friends there and Joe’s Pond in Cabot, Vt., but most of all being with her family.

After leaving East Montpelier, she lived with her daughter, Diane (and Michael) Conlin, of Leadville, Colo., and her son, Bill (and Katherine) Hodgeman, of Rye, before residing in Portsmouth at the Mark H. Wentworth Home.

In addition to her son and daughter, she is survived by one sister, Irene Paine, of Morrisville, Vt.; grandchildren Christopher and Katie Conlin, and Jill, Bill and Ryan Hodgeman; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Marshall Hodgeman.

HODGEMAN - Irma Talbert Hodgeman, 87, formerly of East Montpelier and Cabot, Vt., died Dec. 1, 2002, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 5, 2002, at the Hooker & Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre, Vt. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at the Old Brick Church in East Montpelier. Burial will be at the Plain-Mont Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Old Brick Church, East Montpelier, VT 05651; or to Cabot School Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 74, Cabot, VT 05658.

Myla Simonatis

BELMONT - Myla Simonatis, 88, died at her home on Nov. 24, 2002. She was born on Oct. 13, 1914, in Gardner, Mass., daughter of the late Basil and Ethel Burnett. In 1947 she and her late husband of 40 years, Charles Simonatis, moved to York, Maine, where they owned and operated a summer resort. After 27 years they retired and relocated to the Lakes Region in New Hampshire. Her interests included many outdoor activities, and in her later years she particularly enjoyed gardening and extensive traveling. She was a member of the Road Runners Club in Belmont and the 50/50 Club in Belmont and a member of the Meredith Garden Club. She was also a member of DAR.

Family members include two daughters, Mrs. Lawrence (Sandra) Bridges of Southwest Harbor, Maine, and Joan S. Howard of Warren; six grandchildren, Mark, Robin, Kimberly, Jeffrey, Jennifer and Sarah; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a private graveside service for the family at a later date.

Richard A. Zilm

PORTSMOUTH - Richard A. Zilm, 70, of 94 Spinnaker Way, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Langdon Place of Exeter after a period of failing health.

Born in Henry, Ill., on Sept. 26, 1932, he was the son of Walter and Dorothy (Miller) Zilm and had been a resident of Portsmouth for the past six years, having moved here from Nashua, where he resided for 30 years.

He attended the University of Illinois and enlisted and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

He was employed as a commercial pilot with Delta Airlines, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Airline Pilots Association and was a former member of the Masons and the Shriners.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Barbara (Daley) Zilm; three children, Aaron Zilm of Livermore, Calif., Amber Ure of Rochester, and Jason Zilm of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Jason Zilm, Lauren Zilm, Alexis Ure, and Samantha Ure; two sisters, Sandra Nelson and Janet Kopel, both of Chillicothe, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

ZILM - Richard A. Zilm, 70, of 94 Spinnaker Way, died Dec. 3, 2002. Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in the South Cemetery in Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of New Hampshire, 10 Ferry St., Suite 419, Concord, NH 03301. Arrangements are by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Jeffrey Scott Rainey

PORTLAND, Maine - Jeffrey Scott Rainey, 32, of Commonwealth Drive, died Dec. 1, 2002.

He was born in Portland, the son of Linda A. Marshall Eberle and Peter T. Rainey. He attended schools in Portsmouth, where he ran on the high school track team for four years. He graduated from Portsmouth High School, Class of 1989. He later attended Andover College in Portland, receiving his associate’s degree in 2001.

He had been employed by UPS for the last three years, starting his career in Seattle and transferring to the South Portland facility a year and a half ago. He was also employed by Olympia Sports, of Congress Street, for the last year and a half.

He truly enjoyed sports and, according to his family, could preach the stats as well as a preacher could preach the scriptures.

His main interest, however, was his young son, Ayden. The two would attend sporting events together, and Jeff would never miss any of Ayden’s soccer games. They were both big Portland Pirates fans and would attend the Pirates games whenever they could. He would go out of his way to get Pirates autographs for his son. No Pirate was safe from his pen if Jeff ran into them on the streets of Portland. Jeff and Ayden recently took a trip to Florida to visit Jeff’s sister, Jenny, whom he was very close to, and while there he and his son even took in a Tampa Bay Devil Rays game.

He was an avid downhill skier, having skied in places like Colorado, and in 2000 Whistler in British Columbia. He was known for his "mono" ski ability and would often amaze people on the slopes.

He enjoyed the love and friendship of his family.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Thomas Rainey, in 1988; and his maternal grandfather, Dominic Rossetti Sr., in 2002.

Surviving are his son, Ayden G. Rainey, of Exeter, N.H.; his mother, Linda A. Eberle, of Portland; his father, Peter T. Rainey, of South Portland; one brother, Kyle P. Rainey, of Otisfield; one sister, Jennifer L. Hamelin and her husband, Shawn, of Riverview, Fla.; his maternal grandmother, Glovenia Rossetti, of Gorham; his paternal grandmother, Millicent Rainey, of South Portland; a nephew, Andrew D. Hamelin, of Riverview, Fla.; three uncles, Paul Rainey and his wife, Patricia, of Windham, Joseph Rossetti of Scarborough, and Dominic Rossetti Jr. and his wife, Edna, of Windham; his best friend and mentor, David Bonaparte, of Portland; and several cousins.

RAINEY - Jeffrey Scott Rainey, 32, of Portland, died Dec. 1, 2002. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham, Maine, where a funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday. The Rev. Linwood Arnold will officiate. Burial will be in the family lot at Forest City Cemetery, South Portland, Maine. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory, for the benefit of his son, to: The Jeffrey S. Rainey Scholarship Fund, c/o Fleet Bank, P.O. Box 1280, Portland, ME 04104-5006.

Mary E. (Moulton) Mahoney

YORK, Maine - Mary E. (Moulton) Mahoney, 77, of Long Sands Road, York, died Monday, Dec. 2, at York Hospital after her second battle with cancer.

She was born during a blizzard on Jan. 30, 1925 at her family home on Ferry Lane in York. Mary was the daughter of David L. and Mary Ann (Rennie) Moulton.

She attended York schools until World War II, when she helped in the war effort by working as a welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

She was married on Nov. 6, 1948 to John R. "Jack" Mahoney in Kittery. They recently celebrated their 54th anniversary.

Mary loved growing beautiful flowers in her gardens and sharing them with friends, walking in the woods, watching the birds and enjoyed listening to country music at McPherson Hall in Eliot. She enjoyed crocheting for her family and collecting seashells from far-off places. She researched, for almost 30 years, her family’s genealogy and many other York families.

She was predeceased by her brothers, David, Frank, Walter, Charles and five sisters and brothers who died in early childhood.

She is survived by her devoted husband, John R. "Jack" Mahoney of York; one daughter, Ruby Works and son-in-law Carl of North Berwick; two beloved grandsons; Shawn Works of Ogunquit and Jeremy Works of Arlington, Va.; two sisters, Ruby Gilchrest and Ethel Berger both of York; a brother, Paul Moulton of Skowhegan; and many nieces and nephews.

MAHONEY – Mary E. Mahoney of Long Sands Road, York, Maine, died Dec. 2 in York. A graveside service will be held in the First Parish Cemetery in the spring of 2003. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Maine Division, Inc., 52 Federal St., Brunswick, ME 04011. Arrangements are by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.
