Joseph S. Noble Jr.

DELAND, Fla. - Joseph S. Noble Jr., 65, of Frances Drive, died on Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Florida Hospital, DeLand.

Mr. Noble was born in Hampton Beach, N.H. He moved to DeLand from Hampton Beach in 1980. He was a member of Grace Chapel.

He was a retired machinist in the automotive industry.

He loved Nascar racing.

In addition to his wife of 14 years, Betty Noble, he is survived by his sons, Joseph S. Noble III of New Hampshire; John Noble of New Jersey; and Walter Alan Pickels of Vidalia, Ga.; his daughters, Debbie Walker of New Hampshire, Marjorie King of Stone Mountain, Ga., Stacey O’Neal of Vidalia, Ga., and Shannon Anderson of DeLand; brothers, William Noble of Massachusetts and Robert Noble of New Hampshire; sisters, Baryl Marshall of New Hampshire and Lisa Noble of DeLand; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made in memory of Joseph S. Noble Jr. and sent to Winnacunnet High School Scholarship Fund, Alumni Drive, Hampton, NH 03842.

The Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home, DeLand, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.

Pauline L. Remick

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. - Pauline L. Remick, 80, of Brooksville, Fla., passed away on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, under the care of hospice.

She was born in Greensboro, N.C., and came here 12 years ago, from Portsmouth, N.H.

She was Episcopalian by faith. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW in Oklahoma.

Mrs. Remick is survived by her daughter, Paulett, of Brooksville; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her son, Ernest Remick.

Brewer and Sons Funeral Home and Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mamie F. Varney

KITTERY, Maine - A funeral for Mamie F. Varney, who died Nov. 11, 2002, at her home, was held on Wednesday Nov. 13, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home. The service was officiated by the Rev. Pat Bristow-Carrico, the pastor of Mrs. Varney’s Church, St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Kittery. She offered several readings from Scripture and words of prayer for Mrs. Varney’s long and active life and prayers of thanks for the many years she served the children of Kittery as a schoolteacher and principal. Kind words of remembrance were offered by her grandson, Rodney Varney, and by Mrs. True, a longtime friend and bridge partner, as well as words from her dear friend and neighbor Everett Leland. A committal service was offered and burial took place at the Varney family lot in Orchard Grove Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Elmira Hichens

ELIOT, Maine - Elmira "Myra" Hichens, 80, of 424 State Road, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at her home.

Born Aug. 7, 1922, in Berwick, she was a daughter of Calvin and Ethel (Ramsey) Ballard. Brought up on a dairy farm, she attended Berwick Academy in South Berwick and graduated in 1939, salutatorian of her class.

She married Walter W. Hichens, a vegetable and poultry farmer, on Nov. 8, 1941, and was active in harvesting the crops, especially cucumber and pea picking. She was the mother of nine children - seven girls and two boys.

She was active as a member of the First and later the Free Baptist churches of South Berwick, teaching Sunday school and serving as a youth leader. She was a member of the Gideon International Auxiliary for 50 years and attended several state and national conventions. She was a member of the Eliot Republican Town Committee and served as treasurer for many years. She had been a member of the Eliot Garden Club since 1968. She also was a member of the Republican County Committee and the Republican Women county and state committees. She attended legislative sessions during most of her husband's terms in the state Legislature and was with the House of Representatives Balcony Beauties. She was a constant assistant to her husband in sending legislative bills to his constituents. She accompanied her husband on several legislative trips to several cities, including Washington, D.C.; Denver, Colo.; and Orlando, Fla.

After purchasing a summer home in Barrington Passage, Nova Scotia, Canada, she spent 34 summers at their home and on Seal Island, where her husband's father was born. She suffered a stroke in Halifax on July 4 and was flown home by Angels of Flight.

She leaves her husband of 61 years, Walter W. Hichens of Eliot; two sons, Walter Hichens Jr. of Berwick and Jared C. Hichens of Eliot; five daughters, Mary Alessi of South Berwick, Janice Lytle and Judith Potter, both of Eliot, Kathy Tuttle of South Berwick, and Bethany Siedman of Martha's Vineyard, Mass.; 22 grandchildren; 5 stepgrandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren (all except two grand- and great-grandchildren live within 35 miles of Eliot); her brother Douglas Ballard and his wife, Althea, of Berwick; several nieces and nephews; and a beloved sister-in-law, Ethel R. Smith of Saugas, Mass.

She was predeceased by two daughters, Myra-Coralee and Laurie Jo; one sister, Isabelle Turcotte; and three brothers, George Ballard, Calvin Ballard and Valancy Ballard.

HICHENS - Elmira "Myra" Hichens, 80, of Eliot, Maine, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002. Relatives and friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday at McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick, Maine. The funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at Eliot Baptist Church, 328 Route 236, with the Rev. Roy Reynolds, pastor of the Free Baptist Church, assisted by the Rev. Stan Rockafellow, pastor of Eliot Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot. No flowers please. Leila J. Smith

KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services for Leila J. Smith, 68, were held Thursday at the Second Christian Church, Government Street, Kittery, with the Rev. Brad Hirst officiating. Barbara Kenney was the organist. In attendance were members of the Kittery Lions Club, members of the church and many friends and neighbors.

Bearers were Edwin Ahlquist, Robert Letourneau, Gordon Moore, Frank Trull, Fred Wandland and Bradley Williams, all members of the Lions Club.

Committal was in the family lot at Orchard Grove Cemetery in Kittery, with prayers by the Rev. Hirst.

Following the committal, a reception was held in the church hall hosted by the ladies of the church.

Services were under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery.

Alice E. Lord

DOVER - Alice E. Lord, 75, formerly of Somersworth, died on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at Riverside Rest Home after a period of failing health.

Mrs. Lord was born in Cambridge, Mass., on Jan. 16, 1927, a daughter of Charles A. and Annie M. (Parsons) Banker.

She lived in Lebanon, Maine, for 54 years and moved to Somersworth in 1991. She was employed by Davidson Rubber Company in Farmington. She retired on Jan. 16, 1992 after more than 20 years.

Mrs. Lord was a member of the Lebanon Grange and transferred to Banner Grange in East Rochester, and then to the Somersworth Grange, where she was a Golden Sheaf member. She was also a member of the Eastern N.H. Pomona, N.H. State Grange and National Grange.

She loved to bowl and was a member of the Rochester Women’s League, the Grange League and for one year with the Bible Speaks League. She was a member of the Bible Speaks Church in South Berwick, Maine, where she was bus minister for the church on Sundays, and helped out in Sunday school.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph H. Lord.

She is survived by a daughter, Sandra L. Lord of Rochester; a son, Paul I. Lord of Concord; two brothers, Richard Banker and his wife, Patty, of Thorndike, Maine, and Norman Banker and his wife, Martha, of Yuba City, Calif.; two sisters, Ruth Estes of Bangor, Maine, and Margaret Martin and her husband, Donald, of Manchester, Conn.; two sisters-in-law, Mary Banker of Saco, Maine, and Thelma Banker of Birmingham, Ala.; many nieces and nephews; and a very good friend, Thomas Fogarty of Rochester.

Mrs. Lord was preceded in death by her son, Donald Lord; two brothers, Charles and Clarence Banker; a sister, Ellen Hardy; and two brothers-in-law, Edmund Hardy and Elmer Estes.

LORD - Alice E. Lord, 75, formerly of Somersworth, died in Dover on Nov. 13, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at Bible Speaks Church, South Berwick, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Lord’s memory can be sent in care of her daughter, Sandra Lord, P.O. Box 266, Rochester, NH 03866. Arthur Argereow

PORTSMOUTH - Arthur "Bing" Argereow Jr., 84, died Nov. 15, 2002, at York Hospital in Maine.

A native and lifelong resident of Portsmouth, he was born on July 11, 1918, the son of the late Arthur and Elsie (Cammett) Argereow.

He attended the Portsmouth school system and was employed for over 25 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Mr. Argereow was a devoted family man who, in his spare time, enjoyed such outdoor activities as boating, fishing, and gardening. He also formerly played drums for big band-era musical groups.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Irene (Parcell) Argereow of Portsmouth; a daughter, Kimberly Argereow of Portsmouth; one son, Stephen Argereow of Andover, Mass.; one granddaughter, April McFalls of Smithfield, N.C.; six sisters, Margaret Dominguez of Portsmouth, Elaine Stoyka of New York City, Mary Lasel of Sacramento, Calif., Anita Crowe of Rollinsford, Catherine Chase of Kittery, Maine, and Barbara Wood of Ridgeville, S.C.; three brothers, Clyde Argereow, Woodbury Argereow and Frederick Argereow, all of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Sarah Kafka.

ARGEREOW - Arthur "Bing" Argereow Jr., 84, of Portsmouth, died Nov. 15, 2002. Private services were held by the family. Arrangements were made by Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping. Cleo M. Levendahl

DURHAM - Cleo M. (Fuller) Levendahl, 89, of 92 Packers Falls Road, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at Helga’s Place in Durham.

Born and raised in Dubuque, Iowa, on Aug. 30, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Margaret (Bargeman) Fuller and was a graduate of Dubuque High School. She was employed in safety relations in the industrial relations department at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring after 38 years.

Cleo was a charter member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Newington, where she was the former director of the Altar Guild and was a former member of the Portsmouth Country Club.

Survivors include her son, David Levendahl of Kansas City, Mo.; son-in-law, Richard Ryder and his wife, Christine, of Dover; five grandchildren, Mark Ryder of Portsmouth, Michael Ryder of Rochester, Julie Gross of York, Maine, Robert Barrett of Somersworth and Jennifer Barrett Hall of Dover; nine great-grandchildren, Janelle Ryder and Tony Ryder both of Kittery, Maine, Kyle Gross of York, Carlee Thompson of Dover, Sarah Ryder, Nicholas and Michael Ryder all of Rochester, Quinn Barrett and Fayed Barrett of Somersworth.

She was predeceased by her husband, Jules E. Levendahl, and two daughters, Deanna Ryder and Valentina Barrett.

LEVENDAHL - Cleo M. (Fuller) Levendahl, 89, of 92 Packers Falls Road, Durham, died Nov. 14, 2002. A funeral service will be held at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 22 Fox Run Road, Newington, on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, on Monday, 4-7 p.m.

Ann Mae Frisbee

PORTSMOUTH - Ann Mae Frisbee, 80, of 72 Langdon St., died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002 at Sunbridge Nursing Home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Portsmouth on Jan. 15, 1922 she was the daughter of Sam and Mary Belleois.

She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and was a lifelong resident here.

She was employed at J.J. Newberry’s department store in Market Square for 26 years. She served the store in many capacities: as bookkeeper, office manager, credit manager, head cashier, and regional assistant credit manager. She was a member of the Tri-State Womens Business Club and was secretary of the week in 1980.

Survivors include three daughters, Barbara Brock of Portsmouth, Judith Keck of Rye, and Pearl Smith of Kittery, Maine; a son, George Frisbee Jr. of Rochester; 12 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two sons, Arthur Frisbee and Eugene Frisbee.

FRISBEE - Ann Mae Frisbee 80, of 72 Langdon St., Portsmouth, died Nov. 15, 2002. Visiting hours are on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday morning with the time to be announced in Monday’s paper. Family flowers only, please. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Daniel Duane Sowerby

YORK HARBOR, Maine - Daniel Duane Sowerby, 50, a wonderful husband, father, brother and friend, died Nov. 16, 2002 at York Hospital.

He was born on May 8, 1952, the fifth son of Thomas Y. and Vera M. (Calhoun) Sowerby of York Harbor. Dan attended York High where he was a star football player and an all-around athlete. He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1976.

After many years in the nursing home business, Dan and his wife, Pamela, purchased and operated the Quarterdeck Restaurant in Kittery.

Dan was an avid hunter and was a life member of Safari Club International and the NRA. He was also an avid fisherman, PADI Dive Master, and held a U.S. Coast Guard license as a marine captain for vessels up to 100 tons.

Dan is survived by his wife of 29 years, Pamela Azorsky of York Harbor; a daughter Mandy Katherine Sowerby of Bangor; two sons, Max Davis Sowerby and Brett Daniel Sowerby of York Harbor; three brothers, Doyle T. Sowerby and wife, Helen, of Redding, Calif., David M. Sowerby and wife, Suzanne, of York, and Dwight D. Sowerby and wife, Cindy, of Lyndeborough, N.H.; two aunts, Dorothy Case of Bobcajeon, Ontario, Canada, and Katherine Walsh of York Harbor.

SOWERBY - Daniel Duane Sowerby, 50, of York Harbor, Maine. died Nov. 16, 2002. Funeral Services will be held at the First Parish Congregational Church in York on Tuesday at 1 p.m. If desired, charitable contributions may be made in Dan’s memory to York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.

Florence B. Henry

YORK HARBOR, Maine - Florence B. Henry, 96, of Roaring Rock Point Road, died Friday, Nov. 15 at her residence.

She was born in Manhattan, N.Y., and attended Grover Cleveland High School in New York.

Mrs. Henry was a statistical and technical typist. She had been employed by the Smith-Corona Typewriter Company, Sperry-Rand Corporation and American Machine and Foundry in Connecticut. Mrs. Henry had been a technical data typist for the Apollo space project.

She and her late husband, Anthony Henry, filled a life-long dream to retire to York, moving here from New Jersey in 1970.

Mrs. Henry was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church of York. She believed in the American political process and voted in every election. She was an avid cook and baker, enjoyed many hours in her kitchen. Most of all, she was a loving parent, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony P. Henry, who died on Jan. 10, 2002, and by her sister, Dorothy Hrewniak of Somerville, N.J., who died in 2002.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol Ann and her husband, Terry, Powley of New Jersey, and Paulette and her husband, Brian, Chernack of York Harbor; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Powley and Paul Powley both of New Jersey, William Powley of Maine, Loren McCabe of New Hampshire and Casandra Chernack of Kittery; two great-grandchildren, Colin and Claire McCabe of New Hampshire.

HENRY - Florence B. Henry, 96, of Roaring Rock Point Road, York Harbor, Maine, died Nov. 15, 2002. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, in St. Christopher Church on York Street, York. Interment will be in First Parish Cemetery. Visiting hours, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York.

Herbert Eaton

AMESBURY, Mass. - Herbert Eaton, 81, of 175 Lions Mouth Road, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002 at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport. He was the husband of Lillian J. (Rock) Eaton.

Born in Newburyport on Nov. 19, 1920, he was the son of the late James and Annie (Ivers) Eaton and had attended Newburyport High School.

A veteran of World War II, having served with the United States Army from September 1945 to August 1946, he was a life member of the American Legion Post No. 187 of Amesbury, where he was the finance officer for many years.

He had worked as a millwright at GTE Sylvania, Inc. in Ipswich.

Actively involved with the Masonic fraternities, he was a member of St. Mark’s Lodge, A.F. & A.M., serving as master in 1990; Warren Lodge, A.F. & A.M. of Amesbury, where he served as master in 1983; Merrimack Lodge, F. & A.M. and Saggahew Lodge, A. F. & A.M., both of Haverhill; Charles C. Dame Lodge, A.F. & A.M. of Georgetown; St. James Lodge No. 102 of Hampton, N.H.; and General William Whipple Lodge of Portsmouth, N.H.; he served as district deputy grand master of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts in 1991 and 1992, and was a member of the District Deputy Grand Masters Association of Massachusetts, and the Past Masters Association of the Newburyport Tenth Masonic District. Mr. Eaton was also a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Haverhill, Lowell and Boston; a former member of the York Rite Bodies; a member of the East Gate Club, the 8 p.m. Association, and the Aleppo Temple Shrine in Wilmington.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a grandson, William Sylvain of New Hampshire; one sister, Rose Horowicz of Newburyport; two sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Cynthia Garrett, in 2001.

EATON - Herbert Eaton, 81, of Lions Mouth Road, Amesbury, Mass., husband of Lillian J. (Rock) Eaton, died Nov. 16, 2002. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport, Mass., followed by interment in the American Legion Lot at Union Cemetery, Amesbury. Calling hours will be Tuesday, 5 to 9 p.m. St. Mark’s Lodge of Newburyport will conduct Masonic services Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital, 51 Blossom Street, Boston, MA 02114.
