Avis (Edwards) Bushway
HAMPTON - Avis (Edwards) Bushway, 85, of Park Avenue, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, after a long period of declining health.
She was born in Bellows Falls, Vt., on July 27, 1917, a daughter of the late Herbert and Harriet (Tolin) Edwards.
A graduate of Bellows Falls, Vt., High School with the Class of 1936, she went on to proudly serve her country in the United States Navy during World War II as a physical therapist at Navy hospitals in Bethesda, Md., and Chelsea, Mass.
After her honorable discharge from the service she worked as a bookkeeper at Jones & Lamson in Springfield, Vt. On May 14, 1949, she married Harold Bushway, and during their 52 years of marriage she served as a bookkeeper for the former Bushway Plumbing and Heating Co. in Bellows Falls, Vt., a company they owned and operated from 1955 to 1969. In 1969 they moved from North Walpole to Hampton and owned and operated the Ferncroft Recreation Center at Hampton Beach until their retirement in 1980.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church and a former communicant of St. Peter Church in North Walpole.
The wife of the late Harold E. Bushway, who died on Aug. 8, 2002, family members include her devoted children, Christine M. Bushway of Hampton, Patricia J. Bushway of Alexandria, Va., and Richard S. Bushway of Hampton; one granddaughter, Jana J. Bushway; one sister, Jean Young of Pompano Beach, Fla.; several beloved nieces and nephews; and numerous lifelong friends.
She was predeceased by a brother, Henry Edwards.
BUSHWAY - Avis E. Bushway, 85, of Park Avenue, Hampton, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Peter Church, North Walpole. Jean F. Bickford
PORTSMOUTH - Jean F. Bickford, 90, of 169 Lafayette Road, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, after a long illness.
Born in Portsmouth on May 18, 1912, she was a daughter of Frank J. and Mary (Lane) Bickford. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1931, attended Portsmouth Teacher Training School and Keene State College and graduated from Boston University in 1949.
She taught school in Portsmouth; Beverly, Mass.; Reading, Mass.; and Kyoto, Japan; and retired in 1973 as principal of the George W. Miller School in Nanuet, N.Y. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the North Congregational Church.
She is survived by her niece, Jean (Maskwa) McCarthy of Portsmouth; two grandnephews, John P McCarthy III and his wife, Mary, and T. Stephen McCarthy and his wife, Michele; and one great-grandnephew, Sean J. McCarthy.
She was predeceased by her two sisters, Helen B. Maskwa and Keith G. Bickford.
BICKFORD - Jean F. Bickford, 90, of 169 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, died Oct. 7, 2002. There are no visiting hours, and services will be private, at the convenience of the family. Marcella Boutilier
RYE - Marcella Boutilier, 90, of Gray Court, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at the Eventide Home in Exeter after a period of failing health.
She was born Jan. 1, 1912, in Brooklyn, N.Y., daughter of the late Patrick and Rosalie (O’Reilly) Reilly.
She grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., where she graduated from the Manual Training High School. She married Vincent H. Boutilier and they moved to Rye, where she spent the next 60 years. She was a self-employed Realtor, running the Boutilier Agency out of Rye for about 40 years.
She was a communicant of St. Theresa’s Church in Rye and was a volunteer for the American Red Cross. She was the widow of Vincent Boutilier.
She is survived by three daughters, Donna Cappucio of Miami, Fla., DeAnna Boutilier of Rye, and Wendy Morton of Newington; one son, Brian Boutilier of Mullica Hill, N.J.; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Patricia Murray and Margaret Riley, both of California; and several nieces and nephews
BOUTILIER - Marcella Boutilier, 90, of Rye, died Oct. 6, 2002. Private services will be held for the family. Burial will be in the Central Cemetery, Rye. Jane Elizabeth Allen
KITTERY, Maine - A Mass of Christian Burial for Jane Elizabeth Allen, who died Oct. 4, 2002, in Portsmouth, N.H., was held on Tuesday Oct. 8, 2002 at her church, St. Raphael Parish Church, with the Rev. Real Nadeau officiating. The well-attended service began with Jane’s grandson Andrew Yee playing a prelude of "Meditation" and "Ave Maria" on the cello. The service continued with the Rev. Nadeau welcoming Jane into her church and offering a blessing. The responsorial psalm was sung by Jane’s granddaughter Erica Benson. The priest gave the homily, and readings were offered by George Dow. The gifts were presented by Donna and Harry Yee and Erica and Kirk Benson. "Ave Maria" was again performed by Andrew Yee on the cello during the preparation of the gifts. The congregation was led in song by organist Ellen Parent accompanied by the St. Raphael Parish Choir. The cross bearer was John Carson, and the recessional was "On Eagles’ Wings." The service continued at Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot with the Rev. Nadea
u blessing the grave and offering words of committal. All were invited to join the Allen family at the parish hall for a time of remembrance and sharing. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
TURCOTTE - Oliver Carrol Turcotte, 76, of Amherst, Va., died Oct. 4, 2002. At the family’s request, no funeral services will be conducted. Stasia M. (Sielicki) Reddy
READING, Mass. - Stasia M. (Sielicki) Reddy, formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., and Newburyport, died on July 24, 2002.
She was the mother of Paula M. Chase and her husband, Thomas, of Reading, and the late Cheryl Carey. She was a loving grandmother of John Chase, Emily Chase Coleman, Scott Carey and Steven Carey; mother-in-law of Philip Carey of Casco, Maine; sister-in-law of Mary June Reddy of Newburyport; and cousin of Cecelia Sielicki of Newburyport.
REDDY - Stasia M. (Sielicki) Reddy, of Reading, Mass., formerly of Newburyport, Mass., and Portsmouth, died July 24, 2002. A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at St. James Church, 2075 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. Mildred G. Yeager
EXETER - Mildred G. Yeager, 77, of Coach Road, died Oct. 9, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.
She was born May 28, 1925, in Philadelphia, Pa., a daughter of the late Joseph J. and Mildred A. (Pigeon) Gallagher.
Formerly a longtime resident of Kingston, she had resided in Exeter for the last seven years.
She was employed for many years in the Exeter area as a real estate agent. She also did volunteer work at the Exeter Hospital and was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church in Exeter.
She was the widow of Lt. Col. George G. Yeager, who died in 1974.
She is survived by two daughters, Amelia Y. Greenlee of Stoney Point, N.Y., and Germaine Y. Hayes of Newmarket; two granddaughters, Stephanie E. Jackson of Eliot, Maine, and Margaret C. Hayes of Newmarket; one sister, Germaine G. Ward of Lake Forest, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
YEAGER - Mildred G. Yeager, 77, of Exeter, died Oct. 9, 2002. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at St. Michael’s Church, located on the corner of Front Street and Lincoln Street in Exeter. W. Austin Barrett
HUDSON - W. Austin Barrett, 84, of Hudson, died Oct. 9, 2002, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born on Sept. 20, 1918, in Bury, Lancashire, England, son of the late Walter and Alice (Collins) Barrett.
He was a retired director and chairman of Nim-Cor Inc. and Brown Products. He was manager of W.P. Evans and Son, of Manchester, England, a firm that manufactured machinery for the paper-making industry. He came to Nashua in 1952 to open a branch of that company. In the succeeding years, Nim-Cor Inc., Brown Products Inc., Ober Engineering of Nashua and Tyer Rubber, of Andover, Mass., were added to the group. He retired in 1983.
He graduated from engineering college in England before World War II and was a member of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry. He had a lifelong passion for the game of golf, holding membership in Nashua Country Club since 1952, and was active in senior golf at Whip-Poor-Will Golf Club. He established a tournament, which is played annually at his home golf course, in England.
Since his retirement, one of his interests was model railroads, and he created an elaborate train set-up, including a two-hole golf course.
He recently became a member of the Greek Orthodox Church.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Marian (Gregson) Barrett, who died in 1976; and by two brothers, Richard and Geoffrey Barrett, of England.
In addition to his wife, Cleo (Bacopulos, Nikitas) Barrett, he is survived by a daughter, Lynne and her husband, William Marvel, and their children, Alison and Melissa of Amherst; stepson Michael Nikita and his wife, Amy Evans, and their children, Chris, Michael, Ali, Zoe and Benjamin, of Windham; stepson John Nikitas and his wife, Mary, and their children, Chris, John and Amy, of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; stepson Matthew Nikitas of New York City; and stepdaughter Katherine Nikitas of Somersworth.
BARRETT - W. Austin Barrett, 84, of Hudson, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002. His funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Zis-Sweeney Funeral Home, 26 Kinsley St., Nashua. Anne H. Tiebout
PORTSMOUTH - Anne H. Tiebout, 77, of 245 Middle St., died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a short illness.
Born on May 11, 1925, she was the daughter of Maurice Harman and Amanda Ransdell Harman of Baltimore, Md.
She graduated with honors from Wellesley College in 1947, majoring in theatre and English literature. She then studied at and graduated from the Pasadena Playhouse and completed three seasons of summer stock at Plymouth, Pasadena and Newport.
She went on to pursue her goal of working in the acting profession under her stage name of Anne Harman, performing on stage, as well as in film and on television in the 1950s and 1960s, including "Divorce Court," "Gunsmoke," "Studio One," "Suspense," "Front Page" and "Hollywood Screen Test." During the early part of her career, her lead work in TV commercials in New York City helped maintain family finances.
The family lived for a time in Los Angeles, where she did most of her work in television. After returning to New York City, she had roles as an extra in film and stage. Her last role was as an extra in the 1977 movie "The Turning Point," starring Shirley Maclaine, Anne Bancroft and Mikhail Barishnikoff.
She moved from New York City to Portsmouth in 1996 to be near her son, Stephen Tiebout, of South Berwick, Maine. She quickly made contacts with the regional entertainment industry, where she did volunteer work for the Prescott Park Arts Festival and was employed at the Seacoast Repertory Theatre right up to the time of her illness. Her life was defined by the stage and acting profession, and she had an encyclopedic knowledge of film and personalities in the acting field.
She is survived by her son, Stephen R. Tiebout and his wife, Julia R. Tiebout, and her grandchildren, Andrew F. Tiebout and Timothy R. Tiebout, of 15 Pine Street, South Berwick, Maine.
TIEBOUT - Anne H. Tiebout, 77, of Portsmouth, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002. Memorial donations in her name may be made to the Seacoast Repertory Theatre, 125 Bow St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. A private service will be held later this fall at the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, N.Y. The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements. Delia W. Dockham
GREENLAND - Delia W. Dockham, 90, died Oct. 7, 2002, at her son’s home in Litchfield following a brief illness.
She was born on June 18, 1912, in New York City, the eldest daughter of Warren and Margaret (Foley) Personette. She grew up in Portland, Maine, and lived for many years in the Kittery and Portsmouth area, having been employed at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital until her retirement.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frank H. Dockham; her daughter Marie Henry of Columbia, Md.; and three of her grandsons.
Surviving family members include her children Matthew Driggers of Manchester, Gloria Burton of Sacramento, Calif., and Carl Driggers of Litchfield; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and her much-loved cat, "Dusty."
DOCKHAM - Delia W. Dockham, 90, of Greenland, died Oct. 7, 2002. Private graveside services will be held later this month at a time chosen by the family. Oliver Carrol Turcotte
AMHERST, Va. - Oliver Carrol Turcotte, 76, died on Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
He lived a full life. He was a Prince of Maine who could say he had seen the elephant and heard the fowl.
Born in Berwick, Maine, on March 28, 1926, he was the son of Arthur Leon Turcotte Sr. and Mary Viva Varney Kloz. He was the oldest of six, and his brother, Arthur L. Turcotte Jr., and and four sisters, Glorietta Cobb, Glenna Turcotte, Darleen Weddle, and Durelle Lincoln, survive him.
He was educated in the Berwick schools and enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve at 17 and became a Seabee. He was in the Marshall Islands and the Battle of Tarawa and took part in the invasion force and was stationed in Japan.
He attended the University of New Hampshire, where he met his wife, Lois Hunt Turcotte, and obtained his master’s of literature at Bread Loaf School of English.
He taught English in Massachusetts, Maine, and Alaska. After his children, Christopher Carrol Turcotte and Andrea E. Scott Gordon, grew up, he went overseas to teach with his wife. He taught English in Tehran for five years. He went to Brazil to teach English in the American School, and later he taught in Tokyo. One of his greatest pleasures was teaching in Thomas College, Waterville, Maine. In 1996, he retired to Temperance, Va.

Sylvia Louise Chicoine
LINDEN, N.C. - Sylvia Louise Chicoine, 82, formerly of Livermore Falls, Maine, died Oct. 4, 2002. She was born on Sept. 23, 1920, to Mark and Victoria (Buzzell) Burgess in Livermore, Maine. She was a graduate of Leavitt Institute in 1940, and was a proud sister of Lloyd, May, Gertrude, Myrtle, Ida and Elsie. She was a caring aunt, in-law and friend to many and a loving mother of nine: Gary, Gloria, Marie (Nelson) Brown, Kenneth, Anna (George) Hanley, Margaret Roy, Mark (Jeanette), Natalie, and William (Linda). She was a beloved grandmother of 18 and a great-grandmother of 18.
CHICOINE - Sylvia Louise Chicoine, 82, of Linden, N.C., died Oct. 4, 2002. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at Lakeside Cemetery in Livermore, Maine, (Brettan’s Pond).
Lt. Col. Frank H. Wagner Sr.
HAMPTON - The funeral for retired Air Force Lt. Col. Frank H. Wagner Sr., 77, of 17 Hampton Road, Exeter, formerly of Hampton, who died Oct. 3, 2002, was held Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. Michael J. Griffin, senior priest, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist, and Patricia Mackensen was soloist. The readings were proclaimed by Claudette Dachowski, and the gifts were presented to the altar by Stephanie Wagner Marcucio, Nicholas Marcucio and Joseph Marcucio III. Altar servers were members of the Holy Name Society. Frank H. Wagner Jr. delivered the eulogy. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the rite of committal conducted by the Rev. Griffin. Full military honors were accorded to Lt. Col. Wagner by the New Hampshire Air National Guard honors team. Following the honors, the United States flag that covered the casket was presented to Lt. Col. Wagner’s
widow, Martha E. (Guyton) Wagner. Pallbearers were Vincent Wagner, Thomas Wagner, Paul Wagner, Michael Graves, Nicholas Marcucio, Frank Wagner III, Vic Viggiano, Dan Hicks and Frank Martinez. Among those in attendance were many members of the Holy Name Society, who were seated as a body in the congregation and later formed an honor guard outside the church. A wake service was conducted at the funeral home on Sunday evening by the Rev. Griffin with many members of the Holy Name Society in attendance. The Ladies Sodality provided a mercy meal for those in attendance in the church after the interment.
