Philip H. Smart
PORTSMOUTH - Philip H. Smart, 85, widower of Lucy Belle (Oulton) Smart, of 133 Lincoln Ave., died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born Nov. 7, 1916, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Harvey and Edna (Tucker) Smart and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1934.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
SMART - Philip H. Smart, 85, of 133 Lincoln Ave., Portsmouth, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
Frances Farr
KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services for Frances Farr, who died Sept. 25, 2002, in York, were held Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, from the First Congregational Church at Kittery Point, with family, friends and the Rev. Graham Alvord officiating.
The well-attended service was attended by family, friends and members of her church. Fond memories of Frances were offered by her grandchildren and others close to her. One of her favorite hymns, "In the Garden," was played on the organ.
The congregation proceeded to the church cemetery, where burial took place, and the Rev. Alvord offered committal prayers. All were invited for a time of sharing and refreshments offered in the church parish hall. Arrangements were entrusted to the J. S Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
He was employed for 33 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring as nuclear propulsion supply supervisor in 1973.
He was a lifelong member of the Unitarian Universalist Church (South Church) of Portsmouth and formerly served on the Board of Wardens. He was a member of the American Legion and was an active supporter of the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas P. Smart of West Hartford, Conn., and Army Maj. Peter H. Smart and his wife, Alexandra, of Huntsville, Ala.; grandson Nicholas Smart and granddaughter Phoebe Smart, both of Huntsville, Ala.; a brother, Robert Smart of Annandale, Va.; stepbrother Roger Tucker of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.
Pauline H. (Trefethen) Chapman
PORTSMOUTH - Pauline H. (Trefethen) Chapman, 70, of 928 South St., died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre.
Born June 17, 1932, in Portsmouth, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Dorothy (Muder) Trefethen.
Survivors include two daughters, Roberta Faye Walsh and Katherine Ann Caswell, both of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Susan Chapman, Shawn Walsh, Christine Caswell and Shannon Walsh, all of Portsmouth; two great-grandchildren, Noah and Katelynn, both of Portsmouth; and her sister, Dolly Sherboneau of New York.
She was predeceased by her husband, Lauris J. Chapman, on April 19, 2000; and her son, Lauris J. Chapman Jr., on March 29, 1995.
Vivian Joan Mae Giovanelli
PORTSMOUTH - Vivian Joan Mae Giovanelli, 72, of Portsmouth, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at her home after a long battle with cancer.
Born Sept. 14, 1930, in Westfield, Mass., she lived in Portsmouth for the past 29 years with her mother (whom she survived) and her dearest friend, Winifred Smith, formerly of Huntington, Mass.
She worked in the underwriting division of Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. in Springfield, Mass., and Portsmouth for nearly 40 years.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her sister, Dorothy Keeler of Bradenton, Fla.; her brother, Clarence Giovanelli of Westfield, Mass.; her nephew, Charles Keeler III, of Sarasota, Fla.; and her nieces, Carol Gravel of Amherst, N.H., and Florence LeClair of East Longmeadow, Mass.
Hundreds of lives have been touched by Vivian’s kindness and good deeds. We will all miss her, but we will each have a memory to hold on to forever.
GIOVANELLI - Vivian Joan Mae Giovanelli, 72, of Portsmouth, died Sept. 29, 2002. A simple committal service will be held at the Norwich Bridge Cemetery in Huntington, Mass. Vivian and her family request that instead of flowers, donations should be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. The people at Seacoast Hospice were exceptional to Vivian and her family during her final days. Thank you all and especially Chase Merrill.
Edith T. Geraci
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Edith T. Geraci, 84, formerly of Thornton Street, were held Monday, Sept. 30, 2002.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church by Monsignor Lawrence Burns. Acolyte was Ed Shea and lector was Mary Canino. Organist was Maureen Sheehan, and soloist was Clara Cembalisty.
The eulogy was delivered by Edie’s daughter, Carla Nixon, who observed that her mother found great pleasure in the simple things: being with family, playing with children, and gardening. She loved sports and rarely missed a child’s or grandchild’s baseball, softball or football game.
She was active in working to support the various booster clubs for her children’s sports teams as well as the March of Dimes and the Sons of Italy.
She welcomed people to the family’s camp in Maine. She loved the water and was a wonderful swimmer.
She had a great sense of humor and a way of making everyone feel comfortable and special. She will be sadly missed by all who were blessed to know her.
Burial was in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery, with Monsignor Burns conducting the committal. Pallbearers were Jay Brewster, Michael Geraci, George Pantelakos and John Henson.
Mona H. Smith
DOWLING PARK, Fla. - Mona H. Smith, 98, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, in Lake City.
She was a native of Manchester, England, and a former resident of Eliot, Maine, before moving to Dowling Park in 1967. She was a bookkeeper for a paper company in her earlier years and worked in the same capacity upon arrival at Advent Christian Village. She volunteered at the art and crafts shop and the library and did visitations to many residents at the Good Samaritan Center; she was active in the aerobics class for many years. She was a member of the Village Church in Dowling Park.
Survivors include three sons, Erland V. Smith Sr., Altamonte Springs, the Rev. Bertram O. Smith, Dayville, Conn., and the Rev. Charles L. Smith Jr., Providence, R.I.; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.
Anna O. (Laney) Albert
KITTERY, Maine - Anna O. (Laney) Albert, 93, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at the Kennebunk Nursing Home.
Born July 24, 1909, in Norridgewock, she was a daughter of Joseph and Olevine (Blanchette) Laney. She was a graduate of Skowhegan High School.
She was the widow of Joseph Albert and was a longtime resident of Portsmouth, N.H., and Kittery.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who will be greatly missed.
Survivors include two sons, Louis Albert of Kittery, and Leon Albert of Rochester, N.H.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marida Moran of West Quincy, Mass.
ALBERT - Anna O. (Laney) Albert, 93, of Kittery, Maine, died Sept. 29, 2002. There will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at St. Raphael’s Church in Kittery. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Family flowers only; memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, Kittery.
Col. Maurice R. Buttrick
HAMPTON - Services for Col. Maurice R. Buttrick, 72, of 39 Milburn Ave., were held Monday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. Gordon R. Allen, former rector of St. John’s Church in Portsmouth, officiated. Jean Goss was organist. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery, with the rite of committal conducted by the Rev. Allen. Full military honors were accorded Col. Buttrick by the New Hampshire Air National Guard and the Patriot Honor Guard from Hanscom Air Force Base, Lexington, Mass. Following the honors, the United States flag, which covered the casket, was presented to Col. Buttrick’s widow, Barbara (Hampel) Buttrick. Masonic services were conducted at the funeral home on Sunday evening by St. James Lodge #102 F. & A.M. of Hampton as a courtesy to Col. Buttrick’s affiliation with Benevolent Lodge #7 F. & A.M. of Milford.
Constance Johnson
ELIOT, Maine - Constance Johnson, 77, died Sept. 28, 2002, at York Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Kittery on Aug. 1, 1925, she was a daughter of Virgil and Mary Krichbaum.
She attended Kittery schools and was a graduate of Traip Academy.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, all crafts, and bingo at the Frank Jones Center. She was also involved in Rebecca’s and the Lions Club.
She and her late husband traveled extensively in their motor home out West, and especially enjoyed Texas. They both loved being with their family, often going fishing and camping.
She was predeceased by her husband of more than 50 years, Earl Johnson, earlier this year.
She is survived by one son, Dana Johnson of Eliot; one daughter, Linda Johnson of Eliot; one brother, Francis Krichbaum of Eliot; two sisters, Barbara Dailey and June Anderson, both of Dover, N.H.; two grandchildren, Joshua and Lola Johnson of Eliot; and one great-grandchild, Dylan.
Both Earl and Constance will be sadly missed by their family.
JOHNSON - Constance Johnson, 77, of Eliot, Maine, died Sept. 28, 2002. A memorial service for Constance and her late husband, Earl Johnson, will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine.
Charlotte E. Thorssell
EXETER - Charlotte E. Thorssell, 79, of 5 Kossuth Street, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
A lifelong resident, she was born in Exeter on Sept. 4, 1923, the daughter of the late Charles W. and Mary (Lake) Caswell. She was a graduate of the former Robinson Female Seminary in Exeter.
Thorssell worked at Phillips Exeter Academy as a hostess in the Elm Street Dining Hall for 26 years. She also worked at the Exeter Manufacturing plant, in Exeter, for many years.
She was a member of Christ Church, Episcopal.
Thorssell enjoyed taking vacations with her niece, Denise, her husband, Mark, and their children. Thorssell took great pride in providing Jacob and Sophia Sweetser a token dollar bill on every occasion they visited with her. She will be sadly missed by many.
She is survived by a brother, Norman K. Caswell and his wife, Dottie, of Newmarket; a brother-in-law, Arthur Baillargeon, of Exeter; nine nieces, including Donna Murray of Henniker, Denise Sweetser and her husband, Mark, of Stratham; one nephew; 17 great-nieces and nephews and three great-great-nephews and niece.
Thorssell was predeceased by two sisters, Pauline Baillargeon and Mary Workman.
THORSSELL - Charlotte E. Thorssell, 79, of 5 Kossuth Street, Exeter, died Oct. 2, 2002. Services will be held at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter, on Saturday, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home on Friday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will follow in the Exeter Cemetery, Exeter.
Louis F. Pento
PORTSMOUTH - Louis F. Pento, 77, of 126 State St., died peacefully on Thursday morning, Oct. 3, 2002, at his residence following a period of illness.
He was born in Portsmouth on Oct. 23, 1924, a son of Biaggio and Camilla (Mancini) Pento, attended St. Patrick School and Portsmouth High School and was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church.
He was raised in the Puddle Dock area of Portsmouth by Italian immigrants who owned and operated a grocery store on Gates Street, a construction business, and later on Tony’s Pizza in Newmarket. He learned the value of hard work from his parents and owned and operated his own businesses, including the North End Lobster Pool, the China Sea Lounge, and the Starlight Club, formerly the Italian-American Club. He always engaged in conversation with his patrons about local and worldly events. He will always be remembered as a compassionate and generous person. He also worked for several years as a welder at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and as a lobsterman for over 20 years.
His hobbies included boxing, painting, writing poems and discussing politics.
The husband of Winifred (Bruce) Pento, who died in 1998, he is survived by two daughters, Mary L. Pento and her husband, Basil Varney, of Portsmouth, and Rose C. Pento of Sanford, Maine; four grandchildren, Colleen Haydon, Christine Haydon-Jung, David Pento and Adam Pento; six great-grandchildren, Kara, Maria, Carina, Camilla, Alyssa and Biaggio; two brothers, Joseph Pento and John Pento, both of Portsmouth; and two sisters, Adeline Kazilionis of Portland, Maine, and Elizabeth Cloutier of Newmarket; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was predeceased by two sons, Joseph "Joey" Pento in 1984, and Biaggio "Tony" Pento in 1997; and four sisters, Rose Dixon, Frances Letts, Dominica Roberge and Mary Fecteau.
Barbara O. Carr
NORTHWOOD - Barbara O. Carr, 59, of Sherburne Hill Road, died Oct. 2, 2002, at the Concord Hospital.
She was born in Troy, N.Y., on Aug. 14, 1943, a daughter of Ronald W. and Beatrice (Wood) Olmstead. She moved from Holland Patent, N.Y., and had been in the Northwood area since 1959. She was a 1961 graduate of Oyster River High School and attended the University of New Hampshire. She was self-employed as a financial management consultant for more than 15 years. She was a member of the descendants of the Mayflower and the Harvey Lake Woman’s Club.
She was predeceased by her father, who died in 2000; and her mother, who died in 2001.
She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Winslow Carr of Northwood; two daughters, Lisa Ward and Stephanie Richartz, both of Northwood; one sister, Jeanne Eaton of York, Maine; three grandchildren, Morgan Ward, Hunter Ward and Keaghan McAllister; one niece; and one nephew.
CARR - Barbara O. Carr, 59, of Northwood, died Oct. 2, 2002. There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, in the Fairview Cemetery, Northwood. The Rev. Chandler Newton will officiate. John T. "Jack" Newell Jr.
HAMPTON - John T. "Jack" Newell Jr., 74, of 39 Mace Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.
He was born in Framingham, Mass., a son of the late John T. and Helen (Davis) Newell.
He was raised in Millis, Mass., and was a graduate of Millis High School with the Class of 1946. He then served with the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Randolph before attending and graduating from Fitchburg, Mass., State College with a degree in industrial arts. He later did his graduate work, receiving his master’s degree from Bridgewater, Mass., State Teachers College in 1960.
An educator for 32 years, he taught at the junior high school in Millis, Mass., for four years before taking a teaching position at the Rye Junior High School, where he taught industrial arts and U.S. history for 29 years, retiring in 1990. During his tenure he served the Rye Jr. High School intermittently as principal.
A resident of Hampton since 1961, he was an active member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, where he served as junior warden and was a delegate to convocation. He served on the building committee and physically helped build the new addition to the church. He enjoyed volunteering in helping the elderly of the parish and looked forward each year to making crafts for the annual church Christmas fair.
He was a member of Alpha Lodge A.F. & A.M. Framingham, Mass.; American Legion Post 200; and the New Hampshire Teachers Association; and was a life member of the National Educational Association.
A brother, Richard Newell, predeceased him.
Family members include his wife of 41 years, Ann F. (Wait) Newell of Hampton; one son, John T. "Skip" Newell III of Fairport, N.Y.; two daughters, Sheryl A.N. Kellett of Salem and Helen M.P. Newell of North Andover, Mass.; five grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Newell of Salem and Alan Newell of Murphy, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
NEWELL - John T. "Jack" Newell Jr., 74, of 39 Mace Road, Hampton, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the Trinity Episcopal Church, Hampton.
