Donald F. Harley
DOVER - Donald F. Harley, 66, of 20 Fieldstone Drive, died suddenly on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.
Born on April 4, 1936, in Springfield, Pa., he was the son of Frederick and Emily (Taylor Jones) Harley.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and served as a First Lieutenant at Fort Ord, Calif.
He was a graduate of Drexel Institute of Technology and received a degree in business administration in 1959.
He was a comptroller for Holiday Inns, Colton Manor in Atlantic City, N.J., The Boston 1800 - where he met his wife, Jean, and the Wentworth-by-the Sea in New Castle, N.H.
For 25 years, prior to his retirement in 1999, he was the treasurer of student activity fees at the University of New Hampshire.
He was a much revered mentor to many UNH student leaders. At the time of his retirement, they wrote of him in their publication, The New Hampshire, "Sometimes the words ‘thank you’ cannot say enough. For 24 years and several months, one man was the lighthouse guiding students through the challenges of leadership. This man was Don Harley."
An avid kayaker, runner and animal lover, he also enjoyed learning and reading Spanish.
He will be dearly missed by his wife of 30 years, Jean (Kennedy) Harley of Dover; a step-son Kenneth Moore of Pa.; a brother, Edward Harley of San Francisco, Calif.; two nieces, Jannice and Ramona of San Francisco, Calif.; as well as his many friends.
He was predeceased by a brother David and his former wife, Margaret (Delaney) Harley.

Mildred Barteau
TAMARAC, Fla. - Mildred Barteau, 94, of Tamarac, died on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at her home after a long illness.
She was born in Portland, Maine, the daughter of Thomas and Amelia Bertelsen Thomsen.
She taught piano for many years. During World War II, she became a welder at the Navy Yard in Kittery, Maine, and was in charge of their war bond sales. She was chairman of the MacDowell Club, an active member of the Eastern Star and taught Sunday School at Emmanuel Baptist Church.
After the war, the family moved to Fla. where she volunteered with the Meals on Wheels program. She attended the Ft. Lauderdale Lighthouse for the Blind.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Bernard A. Barteau, her second husband, Gustav Ingold, and her brother, Elwyn Thomsen.
She is survived by her son, Bernard Richard Barteau of Ft. Myers, Fla.; two daughters, Christine Moore of Radnor, Pa., and Jannette Avidano of Orlando, Fla.; her brother, Leonard Thomsen of Falmouth, Maine; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
BARTEAU - Mildred Barteau, 94, of Tamarac, Fla., died Sept. 15, 2002. Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at All Saints Lutheran Church, 7875 W. McNab Road in Tamarac. In lieu of flowers, her family suggests donations to any local chapter of Lighthouse for the Blind in her memory. Ruth M. Fogarty
EXETER - Ruth M. Fogarty, 86, of 4 Alumni Drive, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at the Exeter Healthcare Inc.
She was born in Exeter, May 10, 1916, the daughter of the late Peter and Rose (Nichols) Beane.
She was a graduate of Amesbury (Mass.) High School, and attended Nursing School in Nashua, N.H.
A homemaker, she lived in Exeter for many years and was active in the Kitchen Cut Ups for many years, a volunteer for the Exeter Visiting Nurses Association and was a former member of the South Hampton Baptist Church Women’s Guild.
She is survived by three sons, John E. Fogarty III of Ossipee, N.H., Paul L. Fogarty of Kingston, N.H., and Alan S. Fogarty of Exeter; one daughter, Gail A. Keach of North Hampton, N.H.; 18 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a grandson, Wayne Fogarty and a great-grandson, John E. Fogarty V.
FOGARTY - Ruth M. Fogarty of 4 Alumni Drive, Exeter, N.H., died Sept. 26, 2002. Services will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home on Monday from noon until the hour of the service. Family flowers only. Frank J. Krzeminski
ELIOT, Maine - Funeral services for Frank J. Krzeminski, who died on Sept. 21, 2002, were held this week with a memorial service Monday evening conducted by the Kittery/Eliot Veterans of Foreign Wars post. The service was conducted by Post Commander Mark Schremmer and members Norm Leon and Douglass Burnell. Services continued on Tuesday with a funeral at the J.S Pelkey Funeral Home officiated by Pastor Charles Downes of the South Eliot Advent Christian Church. Some of Mr. Krzeminski’s favorite songs were performed by Emily Haggerty, accompanied by Barbara Kenney on the organ. The service continued at Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot, where John Morang, Charles Downes, Richard Scelza, James Attridge, Paul Cushing and James Pelkey acted as pallbearers and Pastor Downes offered committal prayers. Bill Seward was an honorary pallbearer. Krzeminski received full military burial honors from a United States military honors detail stationed at Brunswick Naval Air Station. The flag that draped his casket was presented to his widow, Mary Krzeminski, in recognition of his more than 31 years of unselfish service to his country. All were invited to a time of sharing and refreshment following the service. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
Priscilla Emery Bissell
JACKSON - Priscilla Emery Bissell, 84, of Apopka, Fla. and Jackson, passed away on Sept. 26, 2002, after a brief illness.
Born in Portsmouth, Mrs. Bissell was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Durham.
Upon graduation, she was sworn in as the first female officer from New England in the newly formed Women’s Army Corps, and served with distinction through the end of World War II.
Shortly after her marriage to Lewis Prouty Bissell, the couple moved to Brewer, Maine, where she was active in civic affairs and volunteer activities. She was a member of the Girl Scouts of America for 76 years. She devoted much of her time to working with girls and young women, encouraging their growth as strong, independent individuals.
After her own daughters were grown, she returned to college, earning a master’s degree in library science from the University of Maine, Orono. From that time forward, Mrs. Bissell served as librarian at the university and in the Bangor, Maine, area schools.
After retirement to Jackson with her husband, Mrs. Bissell served as the town librarian, not retiring from that post until age 78. Her love of the written word and her deep desire to serve others were evident to all who met her.
She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Piscataqua Pioneers, a number of historical societies, the Jackson Sewing Club, the Old Hutman’s Association, the Mount Washington Observatory, and the Literacy League. She was predeceased by her husband. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she is survived by her daughters, Sue Beechum of Apopka, Fla., and Nancy Rancourt of Bartlett; grandchildren, Aimee Beechum of Orlando, Fla., and Andrew Beechum of Los Angeles; and great-granddaughter, Katie Rancourt of Bartlett.
Ruth Leavitt
ELIOT, Maine - Funeral services for Ruth Leavitt of Eliot, who died on Sept. 21, 2002 in York, were held on Friday. The largely attended services were held at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery, with the Rev. David Avery of the First Congregational church in Eliot officiating.
In attendance were family, friends and neighbors. Fond memories and favorite words of scripture were offered by the Rev. David Avery. Burial followed in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot.
All were invited for a time of refreshment and sharing at the Eliot United Methodist Church.
Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
Maurice R. Buttrick
HAMPTON - Col. Maurice R. Buttrick, 72, of 39 Milburn Ave., died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002 at the Exeter Hospital.
He was born in Henniker on July 1, 1930, the son of the late Ronald A. and Lucy (Tatro) Buttrick. He had resided in Hampton since 1966, coming from Amherst.
He was a Korean War veteran serving with the U.S. Air Force, and continued service with the New Hampshire Air National Guard for 31 years, retiring as the executive staff support officer at NHANG headquarters in Concord. He served at the NHANG Unit at Pease Air Force Base for three years, as commander of the 157th Resource Management Squadron, and 20 years as comptroller of the 157th Air Refueling Group. In 1985, he was the recipient of the Legion of Merit, the third-highest military decoration awarded during peacetime. He was also a certified public accountant, maintaining his office in Portsmouth for 25 years. He was also a member of American Legion Post No. 35 in Hampton.
He was a 1951 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where he was a member and treasurer of the Sigma Beta fraternity. He also attended Boston College School of Law. A 32nd-degree Freemason, he was a member of Benevolent Lodge #7 F.&A.M. of Milford, the Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Nashua, the New Hampshire Consistory, Valley of Nashua, and Bektash Temple Shrine, Concord. He was a charter member of the William Pitt Tavern Lodge #1789 of Portsmouth and past patron of the Puritan, Charity, Themis, Atlantic Chapter #29 O.E.S. of Milford.
He was also a member of the Portsmouth Rotary Club, treasurer of Lifewise, and a director of the Mark Wentworth Home in Portsmouth. Family members include his wife of 47 years, Barbara (Hampel) Buttrick of Hampton; a son, Todd A. Buttrick and his wife, Victoria Lynn, of Fremont; a daughter, Tracey A. Buttrick of Portsmouth; two grandchildren, Tiffany and Brittany Buttrick; a brother, David Buttrick of Webster; a niece; a nephew, and three cousins.
BUTTRICK - Col. Maurice R. Buttrick of 39 Milburn Ave., Hampton, died Sept. 27, 2002. Services will be held at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton on Monday at 11:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton.
Edith T. Geraci
PORTSMOUTH - Edith T. Geraci, 84, formerly of Thornton Street, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born in Portsmouth on Feb. 6, 1918, she was a daughter of Fred and Victoria (DeSanti) DeStefano and was a lifelong resident here.
She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church, the Women’s Club, and the Sons of Italy.
The widow of Pierce Morrissey, who died in action in 1944 during World War II, and Car* Blackie" Geraci, who died in 1987, she is survived by her sons, James Morrissey and his wife, Gerry, Paul Geraci and his wife, Diane, and Phil Geraci and his wife, Kathy, all of Portsmouth; one daughter, Carla Nixon and her husband, William, of Yarmouth, Maine; six grandchildren, Jim, Trisha, Kimberly, Sarah, Rachel and Serik.; one brother, Al DeStefano of Portsmouth; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers, John and Dominic DeStefano; and a sister, Rose LaMarca.
GERACI - Edith T. Geraci, 84, formerly of Thornton Street, Portsmouth, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Carl E. Tuttle
KITTERY, Maine - Carl E. Tuttle, 68, of Cottle Lane, died Sept. 28, 2002, at York Hospital.
Born on Jan. 8, 1934, in Athens, Maine, he was a son of Guy and Evelyn (Savage) Tuttle. He attended local schools in Athens during his younger years. He and his family moved to the Kittery area during his teen years, where he graduated from R.W. Traip Academy and made Kittery his home.
After school, he served his country as a member of the United States Air Force for nine years. After his military service, he served as an instructor for the electrical apprentice program at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he retired. His first love was his family, enjoying the children he and his wife raised here in Kittery and later his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he adored.
He is survived by his wife of over 46 years, Lorraine M. (Moran) Tuttle; his children: a daughter, Vicki Yao of Dover, N.H., and four sons: Carl Jr. and his wife, Glenda Tuttle, John and his wife, Linda Tuttle, Kevin Tuttle, and Scott Tuttle, all of Kittery; four brothers: Roland Tuttle of Kittery, Everett Tuttle of Colorado, Robert Tuttle of Kittery, and Paul Tuttle of Hampton, N.H.; four sisters: Gertrude Thompson of Shapleigh, Ethel Curtis of Croydon, N.H., Amy (Ledlow) of York, and Pat Tuttle of Croydon, N.H.; 10 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a great-grandson.
He was predeceased by his brother Malcom Tuttle, and his sister Alta Tuttle.

Vivian F. Overton
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Vivian Fitanides Overton, 83, a retired education specialist and speech therapist with the federal Department of Education, died peacefully in her sleep on Sept. 8, 2002.
Born in Saco, Maine, she completed her bachelor’s degree in 1941 at Madison College, and a master’s degree in 1945 at Gallaudet College. She was employed as a speech and hearing therapist at the Sharpe Health School in Washington, D.C., for almost 34 years. During this time, she published many articles and documents on speech and hearing pathology.
Along with her extensive career, she supported the local arts in the Washington area, and was a generous supporter of animal rights, spending time with several local and national nonprofit organizations. She was also a member of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church on 16th Street, Washington, D.C.
She was predeceased by her husband, prominent Washington trial attorney John Calvin Overton.
She leaves one sister, Marion Fitanides Stickney of Saco, Maine; three brothers: Theophilus Andrew Fitanides of Biddeford, Maine, Peter Andrew Fitanides of Hampton, N.H., and Frederick Andrew Fitanides of Saco, Maine; 17 nieces and nephews; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
OVERTON - Vivian Fitanides Overton, 83, of Washington, D.C., died Sept. 8, 2002. Interment will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at Arlington National Cemetery.
BISSELL - Priscilla Emery Bissell, 84, of Apopka, Fla., and Jackson, N.H., died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Sagamore Cemetery, South Street, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. There are no visiting hours. Arrangements are by J. HAMPTON - Col. Maurice R. Buttrick, 72, of 39 Milburn Ave., died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.

Mary J. McLean
KITTERY, Maine - Mary J. McLean, 91, formerly of Mendum Avenue in Kittery, died on Sept. 28, 2002, at the Springbrook Nursing Care Center in Westbrook.
Mrs. McLean was born in Dover, N.H., on July 1, 1911, one of eight children of George J. and Julia A. (Haughey) Trudeau, and educated at St. Mary Academy in Dover. After her marriage to Edward F. McLean in 1933, she moved to Kittery where she resided for 65 years.
During the years her children attended Kittery schools, she was an involved parent in school activities and as a member of Parent-Teacher Associations, working on many fund-raisers throughout the years. She loved baking and became so well known for her Pineapple Upside-Down Cake and apple pies that buyers would stand in line waiting for them to arrive at bake sales. She was an active member of St. Raphael’s Parish in Kittery, a member of the Alter Society and participated in most parish functions. Later in her life, she became a member of the Lioness Club of Kittery, and also assisted her husband in serving Meals on Wheels in the Kittery and York areas. She belonged to bowling teams for many years, was an avid Bingo player and enjoyed traveling with the senior citizens on bus tours.
Mrs. McLean will long be remembered as a kind, loving and generous mother, sister, friend and neighbor.
Mrs. McLean was predeceased by her husband in 1989 and son, Paul, in 1968. Surviving family include one son, Edward A. of Falmouth; one daughter, Veronica J. Poirier of Falmouth; two sisters, Sister M. Francis Trudeau, RSM, of Windham, N.H., and Pauline Caswell of Dover, N.H.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
McLEAN - Mary J. McLean, 91, formerly of Kittery, Maine, died on Sept. 28, 2002, at the Springbrook Nursing Care Center in Westbrook. Friends are invited to pay their respects from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Raphael’s Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2. Burial in Orchard Grove Cemetery in Kittery will follow. Gertrude W. (Caswell) Weeks
PORTSMOUTH - Gertrude W. "Gertie" (Caswell) Weeks, 90, of 346 Pleasant St., died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.
Born July 29, 1912, in Rye, she was the daughter of the late Sherman O. and Grace A. (McHatton) Caswell.
Survivors include three sisters, Mae Hayes of Portsmouth; Dorothy Avery of Kittery Point, Maine; and Agnes Courtemanche of Portsmouth; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest W. Weeks; her daughter, Dorothy I. Shattuck, in 1990; a grandson, Stanley Shattuck; and four sisters.
WEEKS - Gertrude W. "Gertie" (Caswell) Weeks, 90, of 346 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, died Sept. 27, 2002. Private services were held at the convenience of the family. Family flowers only.
