Alice M. Tarket
NEWFIELDS - Alice M. Tarket, 65, died peacefully on Saturday evening, Sept. 21, 2002, at her home following a lengthy illness.
She was born Dec. 27, 1936, in Seekonk, Mass., and had enjoyed living in Newfields for many years.
She was a member of the Newfields Community Church as well as a member of the Eastern Star of Riverside, R.I.
She worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the SUBMEPP Division, and as an Herbalife salesperson.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, attending yard sales, crafts and sewing, and traveling. She collected antiques and loved to tend to her yard.
She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Renaud of Newfields; her son, Robert Tarket of Barrington; three grandchildren, Jeff Smith, James Renaud and Cecile Renaud, all of Newfields; and two sisters, Mabel Lavoie of Barrington, and Louise Roberts of Smithfield, R.I.
TARKET - Alice M. Tarket, 65, of Newfields, died Sept. 21, 2002. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at the Christian Faith Church in Newfields, at the Newfields Town Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Christian Faith Church of Newfields.
HOYT - Pearl E. Hoyt, 83, wife of Edward Jackson Hoyt, former resident of Englewood, Fla., and Newington, died May 31, 2002. She will be remembered at a memorial service to be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at the Newington Cemetery. The surviving children, Joan Crowell, Janet Knowles, F. Jackson Hoyt and Janella Jones, extend a warm invitation to family and friends to join them in this celebration of her life. Joanne Hartford Ramsay
LINCOLN, Maine - Joanne Hartford Ramsay died Sept. 24, 2002, after a long battle with cancer.
She was born in Portsmouth, N.H., the daughter of Christopher and Esther (Pendleton) Hartford, on Jan 14, 1938. Her home was in neighboring Greenland, N.H., where she attended grade school. She graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1955 and continued her education at the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1958.
Returning to New Hampshire, she continued her nursing career at Exeter Hospital as charge nurse in the intensive-care unit. She married Don Ramsay in 1961 and put her nursing career on hold in 1963 to begin a family, Jim in 1963 and Betty in 1965. The family moved to Lincoln in 1966, where they established their business, Ramsay’s Welding and Machine Co. She returned to nursing as charge nurse at Penobscot Valley Hospital when it opened in 1973, a position she held for several years until she again put nursing on hold to work in the family business. As a mother, she was active in the Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and Rainbow Girls, as well as a member of the Order of Eastern Star and a trustee of the Lincoln Memorial Library. She was also very active in the Methodist Church, serving as organist and part-time choir director for many years, a position she very much enjoyed.
She enjoyed life and most aspects of it, especially traveling, taking many automobile trips with her children during their school years and later traveling on their boat, making winter voyages to Florida, The Bahamas and many other interesting places. She was an excellent navigator both on land and on water.
She will be greatly missed by her husband, Don; daughter Betty and her husband, Scott McEwen; grandson Harrison; brother Larry and his wife, Lee, of Orlando Fla.; her mother-in-law, Ina Ramsay of Lincoln; a brother-in-law, Ron Ramsay and his wife, Susan, of Shrewsbury, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
Her son, James, predeceased her in 1986.
RAMSAY - Joanne Hartford Ramsay, of Lincoln, Maine, died Sept. 24, 2002. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Clay Funeral Home, 3 Lee St., Lincoln, Maine. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Lincoln United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bruce Young officiating. Interment will be in Lincoln Cemetery.
Col. Frank Patrick Marcus
STRATHAM - Retired Marine Corps Col. Frank Patrick Marcus, 77, of 339A Portsmouth Ave., died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002.
He was born in Uniontown, Fayette County, Pa., on June 24, 1925.
He was a highly decorated veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He retired on June 18, 1986, as a colonel, having risen from the rank of private, enlisting in the Marines in 1943. He served his country bravely in the Pacific theatre in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam. Some of his many decorations include the Bronze Star with Valor, Commendation with Star and Valor, the American Theatre Ribbon, the World War II Victory Medal, the National Defense Service Medal with Two Stars, the U.N. Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Honor Medal with Star, the Payop Medal and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
He was also an educator, who retired from the Portsmouth School Department in 1987. He taught at both Portsmouth Junior High School and Portsmouth Senior High School. "The Colonel," as he was known, coached sports during his teaching career as well.
He received his undergraduate degree from Florida State University and his master’s degree from the University of New Hampshire.
He was a communicant of St. Catherine’s Church of Portsmouth.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine R. (Copeland) Marcus of Stratham; his grandson, Devin M. Simmons of Tucson, Ariz.; his sister, Mary Federko of Detroit; his son-in-law, James H. Page Jr. of Nottingham; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Retired Marine Corps Capt. Franky L. Marcus, in 2000.
Private graveside services were held Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth.

Frances Mitchell Farr
KITTERY, Maine - Frances Mitchell Farr, 89, of Lemont Lane, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at Harbor Home in York following a long illness.
Born on Sept. 28, 1912, in Turner, Maine, she was a daughter of Arthur A. and Cora (Irish) Mitchell. She attended Turner and Buckfield schools, graduating from Buckfield High School in 1930.
In her youth and after the death of her parents, she resided with her Uncle and Aunt Fred L. and Eva M. Irish in Buckfield.
She was a graduate of Pelletier Beauty School in Lewiston in 1937, and worked in beauty shops in Farmington, Lewiston, Portland and Kittery.
In her younger years she was an enthusiastic bowler and enjoyed the companionship of her fellow bowlers. She was a member of the Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9394 and was a past president of that organization.
She was an active member of the First Congregational Church at Kittery Point. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting for her church and her friends and family.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Frank C. Farr of Kittery; a son, Conrad L. "Skip" Farr and friend Cyndi Pierce of Kittery; a daughter, Eileen F. Gerry and her husband, Clifton L. Gerry, of York; two loyal half sisters, Alice P. Briggs of Turner, and Shirley P. Varney of Turner and Zephyrhills, Fla.; four grandchildren, Brett L. Farr of Kittery, Lisa F. Shores and her husband, Bradley, of Gergetown, Mass., Christopher M. Gerry and his wife, Kimberly, of Limerick, and Richard Gerry and his wife, Jennifer, of Perry Hall, Md.; nine great-grandchildren, Meghan L. Farr of York, Ana E., Jessica R., and Chandler M. Shores of Georgetown, Mass., Ethan C., Andrew M., and Nicholas L. Gerry of Limerick, Kealan A. Neal-Farr of Berwick, and Robyn F. Gerry of Perry Hall, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three half brothers, Donald B. Mitchell, Alfred R. Mitchell and Sherman A. Prince; a brother, Robert A. Mitchell; and a sister, Edna M. Emerson.
FARR - Frances M. Farr, 89, of Lemont Lane in Kittery, Maine, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at the Harbor Home in York, Maine, following a long illness. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at the First Congregational Church at Kittery Point on Pepperrell Road in Kittery Point, Maine, with the Rev. Graham Alvord officiating. Burial will follow in the First Congregational Church Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery, Maine.
Robert Milledge Gordon
ANDERSON, S.C. - Robert Milledge Gordon, 78, of 1105 Southern Acres, died on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at Anderson Area Medical Center.
He was born on Feb. 17, 1924, in Clemson, S.C., son of the late Baylis Edmond Gordon and Mary (Fendley) Gordon.
He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps after 25 years of service. He was a veteran of three wars, having served during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After retiring from the Marine Corps, he worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and was manager of the Chief Petty Officers Club for 20 years.
In addition to his wife, Barbara Varrell Gordon of Anderson, he is survived by his daughters, Susan Sourille of Portsmouth, N.H., Sandra Spanswick of Virginia Beach, Va., Sally Weeks of Acton, Maine, and Sherry Contella of York, Maine; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Tom Gordon and Edmond Gordon; and two sisters, Ellen McAlister and Elizabeth Stonecypher.
Kyle Robert Thomson
BRENTWOOD - Kyle Robert Thomson, infant son of Robert E. and Tammy A. (Lawton) Thomson, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston after a brief illness.
He is survived by his paternal grandparents, Davis and Kathy (Dix) Parker of Seabrook, and William Lawton of West Palm Beach, Fla.; maternal grandparents Carol Rohrbacher of Naples, Fla., and the late Robert E. Thomson Sr.; one sister, Keri Ann Thomson of Brentwood; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
THOMSON - Kyle Robert Thomson, infant son of Robert E. and Tammy A. (Lawton) Thomson, of Brentwood, died Sept. 18, 2002, in Boston. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Newfields Community Church, Main Street, Newfields. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Manle Wolfson
PORTSMOUTH - Manle Wolfson, 56, a lifelong resident of Portsmouth, passed away on Sept. 25, 2002, at the New England Medical Center in Boston, Mass., after a lengthy illness.
Wolfson, born on April 6, 1946, was the son of the late Abraham Wolfson and Rose Milgram Wolfson of Portsmouth.
He was employed by Shop ‘n Save of Portsmouth, formerly Pic ‘n Pay, for 37 years.
A longtime member of Temple Israel of Portsmouth, he was an avid golfer and a member of the Portsmouth Country Club.
Wolfson is survived by his sister, Leanne Roffman, and her husband, Allen; his niece, Denise Connelly, and her husband, John; his nephew, James Roffman, and his wife, Anne; great nieces Alexandra Rose Connelly and Rachel Anne Connelly; and his great nephew, Nathaniel Roffman.
WOLFSON - Manle Wolfson, 56, a resident of Portsmouth, died on Sept. 25, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Poalizedeck Cemetery, Fuller Street, Everett, Mass. Following the service, Wolfson’s family will receive his friends from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Holiday Inn, Portsmouth. The family will be sitting at the Roffman’s home in Randolph, Mass from 2 to 6 p.m., on Friday, Sept. 27. Donations in his memory may be made to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or Temple Israel, State Street, Portsmouth.
Merle B. Stevens
ORLANDO, Fla. - Merle B. Stevens, 82, husband of Ernestine Stevens, former residents of Portsmouth, N.H., died Sept. 24, 2002, at Orlando Regional Health Care Hospital.
He was born in Houlton, Maine, on Jan. 21, 1920. After school he joined the Merchant Marine and went into the Navy at the outbreak of World War II.
He is retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and also the Air National Guard at Pease.
He loved boating, camping and fishing. You would always find him up in the mountains with his camper, wife and fishing pole.
He survived by his wife, Ernestine, of 61 years; two sons, Robert Stevens of Orlando and Ronald and his wife, JoAnne Stevens, of Rochester, N.H. He will also be remembered by his seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren residing in Maine, New Hampshire and Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to the American Heart Association.
Charles P. Lamie Sr.
HAMPTON - The funeral for Charles P. Lamie Sr., 63, of 282 Towle Farm Road, who died Sept. 20, 2002, was held Wednesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. Services were conducted in the United Methodist Church; the Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor, officiated. Mary Oliver was organist, Elizabeth Barcomb was soloist, and Marsha Zavez and Julie Cyr sang a duet. Remembrances and tributes were offered by Chuck Lamie, Martha and Roland Lemire, Dick Paquin, George Hosker and Connie Holman. Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery, with committal services conducted by the Rev. Moore. The United States flag that covered the casket was folded and presented to Mr. Lamie’s widow, Marion (Purington) Lamie, by the U.S. Army honor guard from Fort Drum, N.Y. Pallbearers were Shawn Lamie, Chuck Lamie, Charlie Burlington, Glen Dalton, Dick Paquin, Jeff Ham and Steve Sheridan. Three small airplanes from the Hampton Airfield flew in formation over the cemetery as a tribute.
Lillian A. Parenteau
NORTH HAMPTON - The funeral for Lillian A. Parenteau, 79, wife of Walter J. Parenteau, of 87 Granite Post Green, who died Sept. 21, 2002, was held Tuesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial was concelebrated at Saint Theresa Church in Rye Beach. The Rev. Maurice Lavigne, pastor, and the Rev. John V. Moran, former pastor, were the celebrants. Altar servers were Salvatore Devincenzo, David Duggan and William Hansen. Judith Kish was organist, and Mary Louise Arcidi and Jim White were soloists. The readings were offered by Diane Klein and Judith Anne Parenteau. The gifts were presented to the altar by Sarah Willard, Brenda Willard and Danielle Boucher. Pallbearers were Charles Crocker, James Crocker, Robin Klein, Jamie Klein, Brenda Willard and Sarah Willard.
Anstress "Anne" C. Swain
YORK, Maine - Anstress "Anne" C. Swain, 88, of 26 Pudding Lane, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at York Hospital.
She was born on May 31, 1914, in Bath, the daughter of Joseph and Emma (Sheldon) Larrabee and attended Bath schools.
She graduated from Bath Memorial Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse. She moved to York in 1937, and worked as a nurse at the old York Hospital and was a private-duty nurse in the York area.
She was a member of the York Street Baptist Church for 62 years. She had served as a church deaconess and Sunday School teacher and was a member of the Keenagers.
She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, crossword puzzles and spending time with her family.
She was predeceased by her brother, Walter Larrabee.
In addition to her husband of 65 years, Trafton M. Swain of York, she is survived by one son, Marvin Swain and his wife, Deborah of York; one daughter, Deborah Adams and her husband Russell of York; a sister, Emily McMann of Bath; three grandchildren, Amy Swain Burley and her husband Robert, Heather Adams Henson and her husband Christian, and Lisa Anne Swain; three great-grandchildren, Justin and Amelia Burley and Emma Henson; and six nieces and nephews.
SWAIN - Anstress "Anne" C. Swain of 26 Pudding Lane, York, Maine, died Sept. 24, 2002, in York. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday in the York Street Baptist Church. The Rev. Valmore Vigue will officiate. There will be no visiting hours. Interment will be private in the First Parish Cemetery.
