Margaret F. Gervais
EXETER - Margaret F. Gervais, 85, of Bittersweet Lane, died suddenly on Sept. 10, 2002, at her home.
A native and lifelong resident of Exeter, she was born Sept. 8, 1917, a daughter of the late Michael and Lydia (Majdecka) Popielarz.
She was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church in Exeter and was an active member and officer of the Gilman Grange. She was also a member of the Rebeccahs.
She was employed for many years at Exeter Manufacturing, several years at both Millikens and Sylvania, and Bailey Manufacturing in Seabrook, where she retired at age 72.
She was the widow of Rene Gervais, who died on April 17, 1972.
She is survived by two daughters, Pamela M. Dorcus of Bath, Maine, and Michele V. Lisowski of Georgia; one son, Stephan J. Gervais of Texas; two sisters, Patricia Lord of Exeter, and Veronica Shaw of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
GERVAIS - Margaret F. Gervais, 85, of Exeter, died Sept. 10, 2002. Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at St. Michael’s Church, located at the corner of Front Street and Lincoln Street in Exeter. Burial will follow in the Exeter Cemetery. Flowers are acceptable.
Jean G. Moulton
RAYMOND - Jean G. Moulton, 69, of Main Street, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.
She was born on April 22, 1933, in Manchester, to Ruth (Maloon) Gordon and the late Andrew J. Gordon.
She had been a lifelong resident of Raymond and graduated from Raymond High School with the Class of 1951.
She served as the school’s pianist and played at all the school functions.
For the past 28 years until the time of her death, she had taught remedial reading at the Lamprey River Elementary School in Raymond.
She was active with the Great Bay School.
She was an active member of the Raymond Congregational Church. For more than 50 years, she served as a Sunday school teacher and was instrumental in the music and choir programs.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Edward Moulton of Raymond; two sons and their wives, Mr. Robert (Sherry) Moulton of Deerfield, and Mr. Donald (Kim) Moulton of Raymond; a daughter, Ellen Moulton of Raymond; two grandchildren, Kyle Moulton of Raymond, and Alexandra Moulton of Deerfield; her mother, Ruth Gordon of Hooksett; five sisters, Carol Drake of Raymond, Anita Davis of Auburn, Helen Fifty of Manchester, Shirley Garvin of Hampton, and Patricia Jewett of Litchfield; three brothers, David A. Gordon of Fremont, Richard Gordon of Merrimack, and Dana Gordon of Vermont; and many nieces and nephews.
MOULTON - Jean G. Moulton, 69, of Raymond, died Sept. 16, 2002. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, On the Common, Raymond. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at the Raymond Congregational Church. The Rev. Neil Iverson will officiate. Malvina Azzi
RYE - Malvina Azzi, 90, of 1100 Old Ocean Boulevard, died suddenly at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital following a collapse at her home on Sept. 15, 2002.
Born in Manchester on Jan. 25, 1912, she was the daughter of Shekralla and Helena (Ganem) Daghir. At the age of 3, with her parents, she moved to Marjaoun, Lebanon, where she was raised and educated. At the age of 16, with her parents, she returned to the United States and to Manchester, where she completed her education at Central High School. She continued to live in Manchester until 1992, when she moved to Rye.
She worked for many years in the mills and shoe factories in Manchester.
She enjoyed Lebanese cooking, gardening, animals and long walks along the beach, where she collected sea glass, seashells and friends. She was also an avid reader of current events. She especially loved the time she was able to spend with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was the widow of Alexander Joseph Azzi, who died in 1974, with whom she raised four sons.
Her family includes her son Albert of Manchester, son Victor and wife, Cecilia, of Rye, and son Robert and wife, Bonny Boston, of Exeter; sisters Lulu Shropshire and Victoria Engheben of Manchester; grandchildren David Azzi of Dallas, Texas, Anne Marta Davenport of Washington, D.C., Alexander Azzi of Manchester, Iman Azzi of Exeter, and Alexandra Azzi of Rye; four great-grandchildren, Sam and Nathalie of Dallas, and Caroline and James of Washington, D.C.; and many nieces and nephews.
Her son Alan of Hyannis, Mass., and her brother, Samy of Manchester, predeceased her.
AZZI - Malvina Azzi, 90, of Rye, died suddenly on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002. There will be no calling hours. Her funeral liturgy will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday in Our Lady of Cedars Church, 161 South Beech St., Manchester. Burial will follow in the new St. Joseph Cemetery in Bedford. In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to the New Horizons for New Hampshire Soup Kitchen, 199 Manchester St., P.O. Box 691, Manchester, NH 03105-0691. Barbara H. Horton
HAMPTON - Barbara H. Horton, 73, of 467 High St., died Monday, Sept. 16, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.
She was born in Wakefield, Mass., on Oct. 1, 1928, the daughter of the late Frank and Helen (Thelin) Gammons.
She had resided here since 1968, having moved from Wilmington, Mass., and prior to that had been a lifelong summer resident of Hampton. She was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star in Wilmington.
She was the wife of the late Frederick H. Horton, who died in 1989, and was also predeceased by a granddaughter, Kimberly Farrah.
Family members include one son, Stephen F. Horton of Stratham; two daughters, Carol A. Horton and Ellen L. Johnson, both of Hampton; one brother, Donald Gammons of Gulf Port, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Marie Jones, Kristin Mattheson, Jeffrey Horton, Melanie Farrah, Stephen Johnson, Sarah Johnson and Garrett Wallace; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Marcelle Adele Barriere Strand
YARMOUTH, Maine - Marcelle Adele Barriere Strand, "Mab," formerly of Exeter, N.H., died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at the age of 103.
She was born in New York City, daughter of the late Marcelin and Adele Schneider Barriere.
She lived in three centuries and saw four wars. Educated in New York and at L’ecole Belle Rive in Neuchatel, Switzerland, she returned to the United States when World War I broke out. Employed as a legal secretary during the 1920s and 1930s, during World War II she started her long relationship with the Red Cross in Cohasset, Mass.
At last fulfilling a dream of living in the country, she and her husband settled in Exeter, N.H., in 1944. A member of the First Congregational Church (UCC), for many years a volunteer Red Cross Motor Corps driver, active in the local theater group in Exeter, and later secretary of the Exeter Red Cross, she hooked rugs, played bridge and was known for her love of animals.
She retired in 1975 and moved to Dunedin, Fla., where she devoted her time to Channel Markers for the Blind.
Even in hard times, her house was open to those in need, and her anonymous generosity touched many lives. She spent her last 10 years living contentedly at 75 State St., Portland, and finally at Brentwood Rehab and Nursing Center in Yarmouth.
She was the wife of the late Sverre Richard Strand, who died in 1957.
Survivors include her daughter, Dolores Gallant and husband Tom of Wilmington, N.C.; five grandchildren, Stephen Gallant of Keene, N.H., Daphne Sprague of North Yarmouth, Cathy Lee Scovel of Montclair, Va., Ashley Gallant of East Holden, and Joshua Gallant of Lafayette, Colo.; and seven great-grandchildren.
As a memorial to Mab. please do a random act of kindness as she had done so many times. A graveside service will be held in Brentwood, N.H., at a future date.
Charles J. Iminski
MAITLAND, Fla. - Charles J. Iminski, 85, formerly of Ocean Road, Portsmouth, N.H., died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at the Winter Park Memorial Hospital.
Born in Lawrence, Mass., on Dec. 5, 1916, he was a son of Ignacy and Antonina (Bigos) Iminski.
He was retired from the U.S. Air Force as a sergeant with 20 years of service; he served during World War II and the Korean War. He was later employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church, the Air Force Sergeants Association and the American Legion.
The husband of the late Beatrice (Navelski) Iminski, who died in 1995, he is survived by his brother, Ted Iminski of Boynton Beach, and many nieces and nephews.
IMINSKI - Charles J. Iminski, 85, formerly of Ocean Road, Portsmouth, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, in Florida. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Visiting hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Eleanor B. Leininger
MANISTEE, Mich. - Eleanor B. Leininger, 90, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility.
She was born May 4, 1912, in Newburyport, Mass., daughter of the late Robert and Genevieve (Hale) Baumgartner. Growing up in Haverhill, Mass., she graduated from Boston Bove Girls School. She married Milo J. Buzzee, and later married Martin Leininger, who died in October 1976.
She was a member of the Eastern Star, The Lincoln Rebekah Lodge and the Hayes Memorial Methodist Church, all of Fremont, Ohio.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Myla L. and Charles Dinger of Kaleva, and Sandra M. and Joseph Clark of Greenville, Ind.; three sons and one daughter-in-law, David H. and Sherry Buzzee of Urbana, Ohio, Robert M. Buzzee of Laconia, Ind., and Donald W. Buzzee of Cleveland; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one sister, Janet White-Nay of Greenland, N.H.; one brother, Donald Baumgartner of Sandown, N.H.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Baumgartner; and a sister, Nancy Stocker.
Carl E. Corliss
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Carl E. Corliss, 62, of 52 Saratoga Way, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Tuesday, with services at the North Congregational Church, Portsmouth. The Rev. Dawn Shippee, senior pastor, officiated.
Words of remembrance were given by Harry Charache, Tom Daubney and Bill Murphy. Gary MacDonald was organist, and vocalist was Wendell Purrington.
In attendance were representatives from the office of the Portsmouth Superintendent of Schools, Portsmouth High School, Portsmouth High School Athletic Department and On-Site Family Karate Academy.
Burial was in Brooks Memorial Cemetery, Eliot, Maine, with committal services by the Rev. Shippee.
An honor guard was formed at the cemetery by a detachment from the 10th Mountain Division, Casualty Area Command, Fort Drum, N.Y., which included Sgt. Roberto Hernandez and Pfc. Mark Reynolds.
The American flag that draped the casket was folded, taps was sounded and the flag was presented to Mr. Corliss’ wife, Dianne L. (Miles) Corliss, by Sgt. Hernandez.
Bearers were Ronald Wolcott, Gery MacKenzie, John Corliss, Billy Corliss, Arthur Corliss and Dean Miles.
POWELL - Carole Ann Powell, 40, of 136 Clarke Road, Rye, passed away suddenly Sept. 17, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at the Advent Christian Church, 634 State St., Portsmouth. FRENCH - Thomas E. French Jr., 87, of Kennebunkport, Maine, husband of Georgia P. French of Kennebunkport, and father of Jan French Dicey (Mrs. Doug Dicey) of Exeter, N.H., died Jan. 17, 2002. Masonic and memorial services will be held beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at the First Congregational Church of Kennebunkport, 141 North St. Members of Arundel Lodge No. 76, Kennebunkport, will conduct the Masonic service, and the Rev. Claire S. (Sawyer) Emery
ELIOT, Maine - Claire S. (Sawyer) Emery, 62, of 70 Goodwin Road, died peacefully on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born in St. Albans, Vt., on May 2, 1940, a daughter of Mildred (Palmer) Sawyer of Ft. Myers, Fla., and the late John E. Sawyer. She received her associate’s degree from Colby Junior College in New London, N.H., and was a graduate of Katherine Gibbs School in Boston, Mass. She was the branch manager for DeWolfe Realty in Portsmouth and was past president of the Seacoast Board of Realty.
She will be sorely missed by her family, extended family and friends.
Besides her mother, survivors include two sons, David M. Emery Jr. of Rochester, N.H., and John P. Emery of Honolulu, Hawaii; a daughter, Lisa E. Neihart of Eliot; her calabash son, Frank Burovac of Hampton Beach, N.H.; brother Jack Sawyer of Cape Coral, Fla.; sister Kathleen Simin of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; three grandchildren, Kyle, Zachary and Samantha, all of Eliot; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
EMERY - Claire S. (Sawyer) Emery, 62, of 70 Goodwin Road, Eliot, Maine, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002. Carole Ann Powell
RYE - Carole Ann Powell, 40, of 136 Clarke Road, passed away suddenly Tuesday morning, Sept. 17, 2002.
She was born in Dover, Feb. 27, 1962, the daughter of Ethel N. (Hardy) Mackowsky and the late Franklin "Bud" Skinner. Educated in Portsmouth schools, she was a member of the Class of 1980 at Portsmouth High School
Primarily a homemaker, Mrs. Powell had over the years been employed by numerous dry cleaners throughout the Seacoast area.
A life-long resident of the Seacoast area, she was a member of the Advent Christian Church in Portsmouth.
A devoted wife and mother, she gained immense pleasure in time spent with the family she loved. Becky, her 7-year-old daughter, was a particular source of pride to her mother. Carole found great joy in being attentive to her young elementary school daughter.
Carole treasured trips to North Stonington, Maine, on Deer Island, and happy family occasions. She enjoyed "cocooning" and greatly appreciated many aspects of her home environment. She was a true computer enthusiast who found hours of pleasure in "surfing the Net" and engaging in every type of computer game.
Being a homebody, she appreciated the simple luxuries and comforts of aromatherapy and herbal fragrances. This appreciation extended to a love of herbal teas and tisanes. Carole enjoyed spoiling herself with little fineries. She found great pleasure in perusing the pages of Avon in search of her next little treasure. These shopping sprees could be enjoyed from home, the place closest to her heart.
The love of her life was her new grandson, Artie, the son she never had.
In addition to her mother and her husband, Jeffrey Scott Powell, whom she married Nov. 18, 1994, survivors include her daughters, Sarah Elizabeth Roux of Biddeford, Maine, Christine Rebecca Roux of Rochester and Rebecca Ann Powell of Rye; her stepdaughter, Tara Rose Powell of Merrimack; her grandson, Arthur Roy Michael Lane of Rochester; her sisters, Charlette M. (Mrs. Paul) Carlton of Portsmouth and Melissa Gordon of Portsmouth; her brothers, Alan Skinner and his wife, Mary, of Wake Forrest, N.C., and Frank Silver and his wife, Karen, of Way Cross, Ga.; her former husband and father of her daughters Sarah and Christine, Richard Michael Roux of Somersworth; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her siblings Robert Skinner, Eileen Emery and Janice Roux.
