Elizabeth R. Boxold
DOVER - Elizabeth R. Boxold, 77, of 276 County Farm Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at the Riverside Rest Home in Dover.
She was born Feb. 25, 1925, in Providence, R.I., daughter of the late Robert L. and Elizabeth J. (O’Connors) Degnan. She was raised in Cranston, R.I., and attended Hope High School. She moved to Dover in 1984.
She was a sales clerk for the former Zayres department store for many years. She was a former member of St. Paul’s Church in Cranston.
She was predeceased by her husband, Roy D. Boxold Sr.
Mrs. Boxold is survived by a son, Roy D. Boxold Jr. of Exeter; two grandchildren, Owen R. Boxold and Ashley A. Boxold, both of Exeter; one brother, Lawrence Degnan of Warwick, R.I.; one sister, Marie Gavigan of North Providence, R.I.; and several nieces and nephews.
Meagan Pamela Silver
SEABROOK - Meagan Pamela Silver, beautiful infant daughter of Christopher Guy Silver and Victoria Lee Fiandaca, was delivered Aug. 28, 2002.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her beloved siblings, Shayna and Christopher Silver and Blake Fiandaca; her loving maternal grandparents Robert and Ramona Fiandaca of Shapleigh, Maine; and paternal grandparents Wayne and Shirley Tilton of Newmarket, and Louis and Beverly Silver of Salisbury, Mass; maternal aunts and uncles Adam Watson, Janine Watson, Christopher Ilnicki and Serena Hill; paternal aunt and uncles Rick Silver, Adrian Silver, Robert Silver and Phyllis Drake.
She was predeceased by her maternal grandmother Pamela Sue Budwell-Bowmar.
SILVER - Meagan Pamela Silver, infant daughter of Christopher Guy Silver and Victoria Lee Fiandaca, was delivered Aug. 28, 2002. Funeral services will be held today at 10 a.m. at the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton. Family and friends are invited to join Meagan’s parents from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow in the family lot in Elmwood Cemetery, Seabrook. Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home.
CHESTER - Roberta J. Venner, 68, of Raymond Road, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital, Portsmouth, following a lengthy illness.
She was born on Sept. 16, 1933, in Biddeford, Maine, a daughter of the late Gordon and Ruth (Sullivan) Harvey. She had been a resident of Chester of 46 years, formerly having lived in Presque Isle, Maine.
She sang in the Chester Congregational Church choir when she was younger. She enjoyed sewing dolls, which she sold on consignment, and also enjoyed primitive antiques.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harold Venner Jr., in February 2002.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Cheryl V.) Silva of Kingston, Mrs. Wayne (Debra V.) Potter of Londonderry, and Mrs. Glenn (Janice E.) Bethune of Islesboro, Maine; two sons, Jeffrey A. Venner and David P. Venner, both of Chester; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; her twin brother, Robert J. Harvey of Dover, Del.; four sisters, Geraldine Dugre of Orlando, Fla., Evelyn Wilson and Laura Hancock, both of Exeter, and Laverne Zirk of Myakka City, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
VENNER - Roberta J. Venner, 68, of Chester, died Aug. 29, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, at the Chester Congregational Church, Chester Street, Chester. Frances R. Witcomb
DOVER - Frances R. Witcomb, 73, of 6 Northway Circle died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at the Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center.
She was born in Newburyport, Mass., on April 20, 1929, the daughter of Randolph S. and Edna G. (Wood) Ackerman. She graduated from Amesbury High School with the Class of 1947, and received an associate of arts degree from Westbrook Junior College in 1949.
Mrs. Witcomb was a former resident of Hampton, prior to moving to Dover in March of 1980.
She was a homemaker and self-employed seamstress.
Mrs. Witcomb was a member of the Dover-Durham Christian Women’s Club, the Strafford County Republican Committee, the Christian Coalition of America-Strafford County, secretary for the Abstinence Education Resource Institute and treasurer for the N.H. Common Sense Conservatives Coalition.
She was a member and deaconess of the Hope Community Church.
Mrs. Witcomb was predeceased by her husband Charles W.H. "Bill" Witcomb, who died Aug. 19, 2002.
She is survived by two daughters, Sandra J. Lafleur and her husband Thomas of Amherst, and Constance L. Leavitt and her husband Richard of Hampton; two stepdaughters, Susan K. Clancy and her husband Richard of Brewster, Mass., and Nancy J. Witcomb of West Hartford, Conn.; two grandchildren, Kenneth J. Lafleur and Tracy A. Lafleur; step-grandchildren, Jeffrey P. Kelly and his wife Dionne, and Jonathan Kelly and his wife Tara-Jen; two step-great-grandchildren, Shea E. Kelly and Clare M. Kelly; a brother, Stewart E. Ackerman of Honeoye Falls, N.Y.; a sister, Patricia R. Millett of Whitman, Mass.; two sisters-in-law, Pauline T. Ackerman of Salisbury, Mass., and Ruth C. Ackerman of Honeoye Falls, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Donald A. Ackerman of Salisbury, Mass.
WITCOMB - Frances R. Witcomb, 73, of Dover died Aug. 29, 2002. She and her late husband, Bill, requested that a joint memorial service/celebration of their lives be held. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the service that will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Hope Community Church, 197 Sixth St., Dover, with the Rev. Kenneth Warren Teague
PORTSMOUTH - Memorial services for Kenneth Warren Teague, 56, were held Monday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth, with services held at the North Congregational Church in Market Square. The Rev. Dawn A. Shippee, pastor, officiated. Readings and reflections were given by the Rev. Robert Gaudio of St. Ann’s Church in Palmyra, N.Y. Words of remembrance were given by Kenneth’s daughter, Karen Teague; fiancé Ellen Eckerson; cousins Harry and George Ceely; sister Paula Roberge; and father Paul F. Teague. Darby Tench was soloist, and Gary MacDonald was the organist. In attendance were members of the church and representatives from the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth; Portsmouth Police Department; Portsmouth High School, Class of 1940; Public Health Labs; and Security Forces Squadron 157th Air Refueling Wing.
Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery, in Greenland, with committal services by the Rev. Shippee.
BOXOLD - Elizabeth R. Degnan Boxold, 77, of Dover died Aug. 28, 2002. Private graveside services will be held in the Oaklawn Cemetery, Cranston, R.I. Richard C. Ray
TARPON SPRINGS, Florida - Richard Charles Ray, 80, of Tarpon Springs, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at Baldomero Lopez State Veterans Nursing Home, Land O Lakes, Fla.
He was born in Boston, Mass., and lived in the New England area until 1968, before moving to Florida in 1973.
He was a U.S. Navy pilot and served during World War II and the Korean War. He received the Airman’s Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross and the Presidential Unit Citation. He was a mechanical engineer for 30 years at the Portsmouth Navy Shipyard.
He was a member of St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, Tarpon Springs, Fla. and the Knights of Columbus, Portsmouth, N.H.
In addition to his wife of 55 years, Elaine Ray, of Tarpon Springs, he is survived by his daughters, Francine Tooke of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Denise Ray, of Woodstock, Ga.; three grandchildren, Travis Tooke and Tara Tooke, both of Gainesville, Fla., and Trent Tooke, of Palm Harbor, Fla.; and one great-grandchild, Morgan Patience Tooke of Gainesville, Fla.

Rita D. Collins
HAMPTON - Rita D. (Bouffard) Collins, 82, formerly of Pinardville, N.H., died Aug. 30, 2002, at the Portsmouth Hospital after a brief illness.
Mrs. Collins was born in Canada on Oct. 16, 1919, the daughter of Zenophile and Diana (Ferland) Bouffard. Prior to moving to Hampton a year ago, she had lived most of her life in Pinardville.
She held membership in the Catholic War Veterans Ladies Auxiliary.
Mrs. Collins is survived by her son, Dr. Roger Collins of Hampton; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Irene) Larivierre of South Walpole, Mass., and Mrs. Nicholas (Lucille) Karatsas of Hampton; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Theresa Gariepy of Manchester; and several nieces and nephews.
COLLINS - Rita D. (Bouffard) Collins, 82, of Hampton, N.H., formerly of Pinardville, N.H., died Aug. 30, 2002. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at the J.N. Boufford and Sons Funeral Home, 676 Montgomery St., Manchester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, in St. Edmond Church Parish of the Transfiguration, Manchester. Entombment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.
Margaret A. McMurtry
KITTERY POINT, Maine - Margaret Ann McMurtry, 77, died Aug. 29, 2002, at York Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born in Detroit, Mich., on Oct. 29, 1924, a daughter of Percy Jesse Carris and Mildred (Winkler) Carris. She was a graduate of Michigan State University. Mrs. McMurtry and her husband moved to Kittery Point from East Haven, Conn., in 1987.
Mrs. McMurtry had a passion for her flower garden which she tended until her death. She was an avid painter and sculptor. She belonged to the Kittery Point Garden Club, Companions of Holy Cross and was an associate member of the Holy Nativity.
She will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 52 years, Robert R. McMurtry, of Kittery Point, her two sons, Mark R. McMurtry of Bozeman, Mont., and Paul R. McMurtry of Midlothian, Va.; two daughters, Mary G. McMurtry of Langley, Wash., and Katherine Ann Balian of Kittery Point; a sister, Barbara Ann Hardy of North Carolina; and one granddaughter, Jessica.
McMURTRY - Margaret Ann McMurtry, 77, of Kittery Point, Maine, died Aug. 29, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, at the Christ Episcopal Church on Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, N.H. Rev. John Jackson will officiate and Rev. Paige Blair will assist. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Me. Interment will be private at a later date.

Maurice F. Brown
HAMPTON - The funeral for Maurice F. Brown Jr., 84, of 254 High St., who died Aug. 27, 2002, was held Saturday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. Services were conducted in the First Congregational Church. The Rev. Deborah Knowlton, pastor, officiated. David Morochnick was organist. Words of remembrance were offered by family and friends.
Burial followed in the Central Cemetery, Epping, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Knowlton. Full military rites were accorded. The firing detail was provided by the Hampton American Legion Post 35, and taps was sounded.
The U.S. flag that covered the casket was folded by a detachment of Army personnel from Fort Drum, N.Y., and presented to Mr. Brown’s widow, Agnes M. (Collins) Brown. Pallbearers, all Masons included Andrew Hirst, Lawrence Poliquin, Charles McDougall, Tracy Emerick, Roger Lebrecht and Frank Chase.
Grange services were conducted at the funeral home Friday afternoon by Oceanside Grange No. 260. American Legion services were conducted Friday evening by Hampton American Legion Post 35, as well as Masonic services being conducted by St. James Lodge No. 102 A & FM with 55 masons in attendance.
Lucy E. Burne
STRATHAM - Lucy E. Burne, 84, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, at Exeter Healthcare after a lengthy period of illness.
A native and lifelong resident of Stratham, she was born April 20, 1918, the daughter of the late George E. and Edith M. (Wentworth) Chapman.
She graduated from Robinson Female Seminary in Exeter in 1935.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Carrol Brown, who died in 1943, and also her second husband, Rudolph L. Burne, who died in 1993.
She was past president of the Unity Club and PTA in Stratham. She was a member of the Stratham Community Church and was a Friend of the Wiggin Memorial Library in Stratham. She was formerly employed for many years at the Lane Memorial Library in Hampton.
Survivors include two daughters, Joanne B. Cole of Kensington and Judith E. Burke of Penobscot, Maine; one son, James E. Brown of Denver, Colo.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Elizabeth Reid of Barrington, R.I.; two brothers, Reginald Chapman of Kingston and George S. Chapman of Georgia; her longtime friend, Evelyn Barker of Stratham; and several nieces and nephews.

Madalyn Mae Conant
NORTH HAMPTON - Madalyn Mae Conant, 94, of 32 Granite Post Green, passed away peacefully at her home, on Aug. 31, 2002, after a period of failing health.
Mrs. Conant was born Dec. 16, 1907, in Newport, Maine. After graduation from Newport High School, she enrolled at Gorham Teachers College in Portland, Maine, where she received a diploma in 1928, in elementary education.
Mrs. Conant taught grammar school in Maine before moving to New Hampshire in 1939. She resided in Portsmouth where she did some substitute teaching at the former Wentworth Acres School. She moved to Stratham in 1956. Following the death of her husband Herbert "Herbie" Conant in 1987, she moved to North Hampton.
She was a member of the Unity Club and the Stratham Community Church. She was employed for several years at the University of New Hampshire, assigned to the dining room staff at Huddleston Hall.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Bob (Ann) Watson of Greenland, and Mrs. Warren (Marlene) Hodgdon of Portsmouth; two sons, Dick Conant and his wife Beverly of East Wakefield, and Bobby Conant of North Hampton; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sally Halliday of Silver Spring, Md., and Marvis Heintz of Falls Church, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
CONANT - Madalyn Mae Conant, 94, of 32 Granite Post Green, North Hampton, died Aug. 31, 2002. There will be no visiting hours. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at the Stratham Community Church. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery, Stratham. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Conant’s memory to the Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. George S. Robinson
PORTSMOUTH - A former editor of the Portsmouth Herald, George S. Robinson, of 567 Sagamore Ave., died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002 at the age of 79.
Born in Warren, Maine, on Dec. 14, 1922, he was the son of Harry M. and Jeannette H. Robinson. He graduated from Bangor (Maine) High School in 1940. He was a graduate of the Boston University School of Journalism.
He had also attended Rutgers University and the University of Pennsylvania.
He served in the Navy during both World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He was formerly a member of the Portsmouth School Board, the Portsmouth Library Trustees, and the New Library Building Committee, as well as the FUTURES Scholarship Program.
Survivors including three step children: two daughters, Susan Weiss of Exeter, Euan Bear of Bakersfield, Vt.; a son, Michael Badger of Kittery Point, Maine; and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Robinson.
There will be no funeral services. A memorial gathering for friends will be scheduled for later this month.
STERRY - Pauline Louise (Moore) Sterry, 71, of Coral Springs, Fla., died May 24, 2002. Family, friends and relatives are invited to attend services at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at the Hampton United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Carroll Moore. The church is located at 525 Lafayette Road, Hampton. At the conclusion of the services, there will be a fellowship and refreshment time in Carter Hall put on by the Hampton United Methodist women’s group. A brief prayer service will be held for family members at 1:15 p.m. at the graveside at High Street Cemetery.
