Travis R. Mendoza

YORK BEACH, Maine - Travis Richard Mendoza, 14, of York Beach, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at York Hospital.

He was born July 9, 1988, son of Maura (Flanagan) Mendoza. He was a student at York Middle School. He especially loved his two younger brothers, Michael and Conlan.

He enjoyed playing lacrosse and football, and spent his spare time skateboarding, surfing, riding his three-wheeler and driving his Toyota truck.

Survivors include his mother and her significant other, Walter Moulton; his two brothers; maternal grandparents, Richard and Margaret Flanagan of York Beach and Naples, Fla.; an uncle, Martin J. Flanagan of Kittery; and several cousins.

MENDOZA - Travis R. Mendoza of York Beach, Maine, died Aug. 22, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, in the First Parish Congregational Church, York Street, York. Visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to York Youth Football and/or York Skateboard Park, c/o People’s Heritage Bank, 127 Long Sands Road, York, ME 03909.

Anna A. Soucise

HAMPTON - The funeral for Anna A. Soucise, 75, of 251 Winnacunnet Road, who died Aug. 19, 2002, was held Friday, Aug. 23, 2002, from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. Services were conducted in the United Methodist Church. The Rev. Carroll C. Moore, pastor, officiated. Mary Oliver was organist/pianist and Elizabeth L. Barcomb was soloist.

Burial followed in the Monadnock View Cemetery, Keene.

Mrs. Marion E. Spooner

NEWINGTON - Funeral services for Mrs. Marion E. (Deselle) Spooner, 90, of 29 Airport Road, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home–Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth, Saturday, with services at the Greenland Community Congregational Church. The Rev. Douglas Carter, pastor, officiated. Organist was Ida Morang.

In attendance were members of the church including representatives from the Women’s Alliance. Burial was in Bedford Centre Cemetery in Bedford, with committal services by the Rev. Carter.

Bearers were Corey Shannahan, Wesley Stanton, Walter Wajda, Robert Olson, John Palmer and Andrew Olson.

Charles R. Hughes

XENIA, Ohio - Charles R. Hughes, 87, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002.

Born in Boston, Mass., on March 18, 1915, he was the son of George and Sarah (Fortune) Hughes.

He is survived by his wife, Amelia Hughes of Xenia; his daughter and her husband, Sharon (Perry) and Sherman Thatcher of Xenia; his sister, Virginia Weaver of York, Maine; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.

HUGHES - Charles R. Hughes, 87, of Xenia, Ohio, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002. Funeral services will be at 12 noon on Tuesday at the Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home, 119 Rarden Road, Peebles, Ohio. Joseph H. "Bud" Drake Jr.

RYE - Graveside services for Joseph H. "Bud" Drake Jr., 84, were held Sunday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth, with services at Central Cemetery in Rye. The Rev. Dawn A. Shippee, pastor of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Mr. Drake’s niece, Sandra Munsie. In attendance were members of the North Congregational Church; representatives from the Community Council of Senior Citizens; and former classmates from Portsmouth High School, Class of 1936.

Robert J. Chamberlain Sr.

HAMPTON - Robert J. Chamberlain Sr., 76, of 164 Mill Road, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at his home.

He was born in Rutland, Vt., on Nov. 23, 1925, a son of the late Emile and Catherine (Bruten) Chamberlain.

He was a graduate of Mount St. Joseph High School in Rutland, Vt., attended Providence College and graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1952 with a degree in business administration.

Joining the service immediately after graduating from high school, he was a veteran of World War II, serving as an aviator with the U.S. Navy. He retired as commanding officer of Jet Attack Squadron 911 in South Weymouth, Mass., after 22 years of service, which included time served with the Navy Reserve.

He was also employed with GTE Sylvania in Exeter, where he retired as plant manager in 1987 after 35 years of service. He had resided in Hampton for the past 20 years, having moved from Epping.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish, was a former member of the Exeter Rotary Club, was involved with the GTE Junior Achievement Program while employed with GTE Sylvania and had been active with the Boy Scouts of America locally in Exeter as well as with the regional Daniel Webster Council.

He was the husband of Patricia A. "Tish" (Harries) Chamberlain for 48 years.

In addition to his wife, family members include one son, Navy Cmdr. Robert J. Chamberlain Jr., M.D., Great Lakes, Ill., and his wife Karen; one daughter, Susan J. Hebert and her husband, David, of Derry; six grandchildren; one brother, Richard Chamberlain of Sunset Beach, S.C.; two sisters, Jean Jones of Whispering Pines, N.C., and Mary Kay Barron of Rutland, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.

CHAMBERLAIN - Robert J. Chamberlain Sr., 76, of 164 Mill Road, Hampton, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. If desired, donations may be made to the Rockingham VNA & Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Dorothea C. Atwood

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Dorothea C. Atwood, 89, of 104 Pond Road, widow of Reginald C. Atwood, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at the York Hospital.

Born July 26, 1913, in Kittery, she was a daughter of Willard C. and Pearl E. (Pettigrew) Chick.

She moved here in 1959 from Kittery Point. She was a homemaker and was a member of First Baptist Church.

Family members include two sons, Ralph A. Seavey of Alfred and Stuart L. Seavey of Williamstown, Mass.; three daughters, Patricia S. Reynolds of Wells, Evelyn M. Quimby of Weare, N.H., and Julia E. Curtis of Exeter, N.H.; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a companion, Philip Spooner of South Berwick.

In addition to her husband, who died Nov. 11, 1990, she was predeceased by a sister, Faustenah A. Chick.

ATWOOD - Dorothea C. Atwood, 89, of South Berwick, Maine, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at First Baptist Church. Memorial donations may be made to the animal shelter of one's choice. Elizabeth I. Gibson

MANCHESTER - A brief service of remembrance for Elizabeth I. (Graham) Gibson was held on Sunday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth. The Rev. Vivan Martindale, pastor of the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth, officiated. In attendance were members of the Middle Street Baptist Church. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Chester, Vt., with committal services by the Rev. Floyd McIntyre, pastor of the Advent Christian Church in North Springfield, Vt.

Sewall W. Barbour

LYNN, Mass. - Funeral services for Sewall W. Barbour, 77, of 111 Birch St., were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, N.H., on Monday, with graveside services held at the Sagamore Cemetery in Portsmouth. The Rev. David Avery, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Eliot, Maine, officiated.

Harold Richard Kalf

KITTERY, Maine - Harold Richard Kalf, 78, of 143 Rogers Road, Meeting House Village, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at his home.

He was born on Feb. 20, 1924, in Garfield, N.J., a son of Gilbert and Ann (Stacey) Kalf; he attended local schools, going on to receive his degree from Rutgers University. He was a veteran of the United States military, serving his country in the Army. As a young man he ventured to the western part of the country and worked as a cowboy, herding cattle, working on a ranch and riding in rodeo competitions. This sparked his lifelong interest in horses, leading him and his wife of more than 43 years, Beverly (Miller) Kalf, to open and run Champlain Stables in Vermont - operating stables, a riding rink and other equestrian activities. His entrepreneurial zest then led to the opening of Broad Acres, a family fun and recreation area in Malletts Bay, Vt. He enjoyed adding new activities such as skating, go-carts and the like; he especially enjoyed watching the children enjoy the activities year after year for more than 20 years. He was one of the first to bring snowmobiles to lake Champlain and rent them out for

people to enjoy the Vermont winters.

After his retirement he and his wife spent time in Long Boat Key, Fla. They moved to the Seacoast in the early ’90s before her death in 1994. He was a member of the Benevolent Order of Elks in Burlington, Vt.

He is survived by his daughter and her husband, Karen and Peter Billipp of Eliot, Maine, and their son, Tyler.

He was predeceased by his wife and his brother, Edward Kalf.

KALF - Harold Richard Kalf, 78, of 143 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine, died Aug. 25, 2002, at his home. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at the First Congregational Church of Eliot, on State Road, with the Rev. David Avery officiating. Please omit flowers; donations may be made in his memory to the American Diabetes Association, 10 Bangor St., Suite F, Augusta, ME 04330. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Maxine Elliott Otis

ROLLINSFORD - Maxine Elliott Otis, 93, of 457 Prospect St., died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at the Dover Rehabilitation and Living Center.

Born in Kezar Falls, Maine, on May 10, 1909, she was the daughter of Elwood and Eliza (Demerritt) Elliott. She graduated from the Porter Maine High School, where she was an excellent student and pianist.

In October 1929 she married Clark Fuller and they moved to Colebrook, N.H., where she was very active in the Congregational Church and managing a family business. In September 1950, Clark Fuller passed away. She later married Charles R. Otis, and they moved to Rollinsford in June 1953. Mr. Otis passed away in 1976.

She worked for the United States post office in Rollinsford for 19 years, and was an active member of the First Parish Federated Church in South Berwick, Maine. She was also active in civic affairs and was a 69-year member of the Eureka Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the American Legion Auxiliary, George L. O’Neil Post in Colebrook, and a former member of the Loyal Order of Moose, No. 443 of Dover. She enjoyed many hobbies and was an avid player and teacher of bridge and cribbage.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Claire and Prior Morell of Wiscasset, Maine, and Sarah and Arnold Paul of Eliot, Maine; a stepson and his wife, Charles "Butch" and Alice Otis of Somersworth; a stepdaughter and her husband, Barbara and Norman Lowell of Moscow Mills, Mo.; a stepson-in-law, Frank Clabeaux of Somersworth; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her two husbands, she was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Pearl Clabeaux, who died in July 2001.

OTIS - Maxine Elliott Otis, 93, of Prospect Street, Rollinsford, died Aug. 24, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, at the First Parish Federated Church, corner of Main and Academy streets, South Berwick, Maine, with the Rev. Donna Lee Muise, pastor, officiating. There are no calling hours. Private graveside committal services will be held at the Village Cemetery, Colebrook, at the convenience of the family. Roland O. Palmer

RYE - Roland O. Palmer, 93, of 795 Washington Road, formerly of Waterbury, Conn., died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at Webster at Rye.

He was born in Waterbury, Conn., on July 15, 1909, the son of the late Oscar and Augusta (Swenson) Palmer.

He was a graduate of Crosby High School in Waterbury with the Class of 1927 and New Haven University in 1933.

He worked as an accountant for the Chase Brass & Copper Company in Waterbury from 1927 to 1971. He moved to Rye in 1986.

He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Waterbury, Conn., and the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Newington.

He was the husband of the late Virginia N. (Houston) Palmer for 60 years; she died in 1999.

Family members include one daughter, Marilyn V. Marchant of Rye; one son, Steve S. Palmer of York, Maine; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

PALMER - Roland O. Palmer, 93, of 795 Washington Road, Rye, formerly of Waterbury, Conn., died Aug. 27, 2002. At his request, private services will be held at the convenience of the family. If desired, donations may be made to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 22 Fox Run Road, Newington, NH 03801; or to Webster at Rye, 795 Washington Road, Rye, NH 03870. Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Elmer J. "Jack" Burnham Jr.

KITTERY, Maine - A funeral for Elmer J. "Jack" Burnham Jr., who died on Aug. 17, 2002, was held on Aug. 22, 2002, in his church, the First Congregational Church at Kittery Point, with the interim minister, the Rev. Jack Lynes, officiating. Mr. Burnham’s great-niece, Karawan Kouki, recalled many of hers and her family’s fond memories of her uncle from when she was growing up. The congregation also heard some enjoyable memories of growing up as a neighbor of Jack’s from Mrs. Dean Walker, and memories of Jack as a student from Mrs. Harrison Lemont. A close family friend, Onil Roy, also recalled spending time with Jack at Red Sox games in Boston and helping him around his home. Family and friends were invited to a time of sharing and refreshment at the church parish hall. Burial followed in Scarborough, Maine. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Arthur Delphis Trudell Jr.

SOMERSWORTH - Arthur Delphis Trudell Jr., 86, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at Langdon Place of Dover.

Born in Worcester, Mass., on June 17, 1916, he was the son of Arthur and Dora (Parent) Trudell Sr.

He was a former resident of Portsmouth and Melbourne, Fla., and for the past 10 years he and his wife, Winnie, had been residents of Somersworth.

He retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1974, after 30 years of employment. He worked in Shop 38 as a marine machinist and a planner-estimator machinist. He also managed Hillcrest Trailer Park in Portsmouth for about 20 years.

He had been a life member of the Knights of Columbus Council #140 since 1939.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Winifred (McFarland) Trudell, of Langdon Place, Dover, a daughter-in-law, Kitti Trudell, and two granddaughters, Kira Trudell and Sonia Trudell, all of Somersworth.

He was predeceased by his son, Robert Trudell, who died in April of 2002.

TRUDELL - Arthur D Trudell Jr., 86, of Somersworth, died Aug. 22, 2002. At his request, services will be private. Arrangements are by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St. Portsmouth.
