P. Whitman Smith
HAMPTON - P. Whitman Smith, 78, of 31 Josephine Drive, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.
He was born in East Orange, N.J., on Feb. 28, 1924, the son of the late Paul Whitman and Emily Conway (Smith) Smith.
He grew up in Madison, N.J., where he attended local schools. Upon graduation, he attended the Morristown Beard School, Morristown, N.J.; and Brown University in Providence, R.I.
He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army.
He worked as an insurance agent for Chubb & Sons in New Jersey before moving to Concord, where he worked for Blue Cross & Blue Shield of New Hampshire.
While working in Concord, he resided in Hopkinton before moving to the Portland, Maine, area, where he worked for Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Maine. Most recently, he resided in Hampton, having come from Durham and Plymouth.
He enjoyed gardening, bird-watching and traveling.
In addition to his wife of 16 years, Jean (Houston) Sullivan of Hampton, he is survived by a daughter, Holly Gagne of Contoocook; a son, Brad Smith of Hopkinton; four stepdaughters, Karen Haggerty of Scarborough, Maine, Kelly Dole of Bethel, Maine, Colleen Tetzlaff of Northfield, Vt., and Katie Leary of South Portland, Maine; a stepson, John Sullivan of Topanga Canyon, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; one sister, Suzanne Lipscomb of Lexington, Va.; one niece; and one nephew.
Sgt. Donald F. Bedard
DOVER - Retired Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Donald F. Bedard, 70, of 3 McKenna St., died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital following a brief illness.
Born Dec. 13, 1931, in Fairlawn, R.I., he was the son of the late Robert N. and Gertrude V. (Tucker) Bedard.
He was a graduate of Pawtucket High School, Pawtucket, R.I., and of the University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor of Arts degree in general studies.
He served a successful 28-year career in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1978. He served in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was part of a detachment that trained with the Royal Australian Air Force during his Air Force career.
After retirement in 1978, he settled in Dover, where he was a communicant of St. Joseph Church. He was a member, past president and past adjutant of Piscataqua Chapter #4 of the Disabled American Veterans. In addition, he was a member of Trench Rats and worked for N.H. Employment Security in the Portsmouth office as a veteran’s representative.
He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara Bedard, who died May 8, 2002; and by a brother, Robert Bedard.
Family members include two daughters, Dr. Donna L. Leach of King, N.C., and Laurie A. Hurley and her husband, Bob, of Malden, Mass.; one sister, Ann Snuggs of Smyrna, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Stephanie and Jennifer Hurley of Malden, Mass.; nieces Debbie Bedard, Mary Ann Walsh and Linda Griffin; and nephews Robert Bedard Jr., Mike Griffin and Raymond Griffin.
Llewelyn "Sam" Bulley
KITTERY, Maine - Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, for Llewelyn "Sam" Bulley, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, with the Rev. George Wardwell of the Baptist Church in Kittery Point officiating.
Services began with Sam’s fellow Lions honoring him with a Lions memorial. The Lions service was conducted by Kittery Lions President Gordon Moore, with assistance from Lions Secretary Leila Smith and Lions Don Smith, Frank Trull, Bradley Williams and Bob Williams.
The service continued with music from organist Barbara Kenney and a solo by close family friend Coco Kelleher, singing one of Sam’s favorite hymns. Mr. Bulley’s granddaughter, Sherrie Holtby, eulogized her grandfather, recalling so many fond memories she and her family had about growing up with him. The service at the funeral home ended with the Rev. Wardwell offering closing prayers.
The service continued at Evergreen Cemetery in Berwick, with the Rev. Wardwell offering prayers of committal and blessing the grave. Pallbearers were George Brooks, Pat Bedard, Steven Holtby, Gordon Bryant, Henry Raymond and Bob Williams.
All were invited to the home of Mr. Bulley’s son George and Nancy Brooks for a time of sharing and refreshment.
Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
Wayne Edward D’Errico
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Wayne Edward D’Errico, 27, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002. He was born in Portsmouth, N.H., and moved to Clearwater from Greenland, N.H., in 1978. He graduated in 1992 from Clearwater High School, served as a corporal in the Marine Corps for four years and worked as a tree trimmer for Arbor Masters Tree Service.
Survivors include his parents, Carolyn and Charles D’Errico of Redington Shores, Fla.; brothers Charles Rossop and Daniel D’Errico of Florida; paternal grandmother Jennie D’Errico of Largo, Fla.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins in Maine and New Hampshire.
Randall J. "Randy" Marsh
KITTERY, Maine - A well-attended memorial service was held for Randall J. "Randy" Marsh on Tuesday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home. The service was officiated by the Rev. Graham Alvord of Kittery Point. In attendance were family, friends and many of his fellow commercial fishermen. All were invited to the home of Randy’s brother, Ron, in Kittery following the service for a time of sharing and refreshment. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
ROGERS - James C. Rogers, 91, of the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth, died July 23, 2002, at York Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Kittery, Maine. Family flowers only. Hakon Harald Berg
SANFORD, Maine - Hakon Harald Berg, 76, of Sanford, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002 at The Goodall Hospital in Sanford.
He was born in France on Sept. 10, 1925, the son of Ragnar Berg.
He worked for Civil Service for 37 years. During many of those years he worked at The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as an architect. He later retired and went to work as the code enforcement officer for North Berwick for seven years.
His survivors include his wife Diane of 20 years and their two children Matthew Berg of Sanford and Kate Meagher and her husband Steve of Sanford.
Also surviving are son Kenneth and wife Shelly and their two children Sonya and Brian of Pennsylvania, son Gary and wife Sue and their two children Jeffrey and Kirsten of Eliot, Maine and their daughter Laurie Hillis and her husband Bob of Florida, and a daughter Peggy.

Jane Brooks Barrie
KITTERY POINT, Maine - Jane Brooks Barrie, 90, of Kittery Point, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002 in Portsmouth.
She was born in Boston, Mass. on Oct. 25, 1911, the daughter of Harry B. Brooks and Ethel (Sanborn) Brooks. She was a graduate of Milton High School, Milton, Mass. and Boston University College of Liberal Arts, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. In 1932, she was Boston University’s first all-university Prom Queen and in 1933 was named to the Boston University Hall of Fame.
As a resident of Scituate, Mass. for 29 years, she was a long-time member of and secretary for the Scituate Health Service, the First Trinitarian Congregational Church, and the Massachusetts Association for the Blind. Also, for many years, she was Executive Secretary for the Scituate Public School System.
When she retired to Eastman in Grantham, N.H., she was a member of the Eastman Golf Links and the New London, N.H. Hospital Auxiliary.
Mrs. Barrie was predeceased by a son, Peter.
In addition to her beloved husband of 65 years, David Barrie of York, Me., she is survived by a son, Richard Brooks Barrie, a daughter Johanna Barrie Mangion and son-in-law, Robert Mangion, all of Kittery Point. She also leaves three grandsons, Philip Thompson Chase, Brooks Barrie Chase, and Stephen Brooks Barrie, as well as three step-grandchildren, Jon Mangion, Sarah Mangion and Almaz Asresahin, and a great-granddaughter, Abigail Jane Chase.
BARRIE - Jane Brooks Barrie, 90, of Kittery Point, Maine, died Aug. 11, 2002 in Portsmouth, N.H. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no memorial service. She will be buried in Bethel, Me. Robert O. E. Elliot
KENNEBUNK, Maine - Robert O. E. Elliot, 99, died early Sunday morning, July 28, 2002, at his residence in Kennebunk. He was born in Hyde Park, Mass., and spent a good part of his youth in Woolwich, Me. Moving to Hampton, N.H., he graduated from Hampton Academy and returned to Boston University to study journalism. In 1925, he married Annie Colwell of Hyde Park, Mass. and they moved to Hampton, where he worked on the Hampton Union newspaper, the Boston Herald-Traveler and the Portsmouth Herald.
While in N.H., he wrote a rod and gun column for the Portsmouth Herald and wrote fish and game publicity for the State of New Hampshire. In 1946, he moved his family to Augusta, Me., and took a position as Director of Recreational Promotion for the Maine Development Commission. He worked for several state of Maine agencies, including Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, retiring in 1971 as Director for Travel and Tourism for the Maine Department of Economic Development.
After his retirement, Mr. Elliot remained active promoting Travel and Tourism for the New England Camping and Travel Association and the Heritage Trail Foundation, as well as performing public relations for a firm which imported Hardy fishing tackle.
Through all these years, Mr. Elliot continued as a prolific free-lance writer, photojournalist and author. He published a wide variety of books, including: "The Eastern Brook Trout", "All about Trout", "Bass fishing in New England", "Salmon fishing in New England", "Trout from Maine to California", and "The Making of an Angler". He also had over 100 articles and stories appear in national publications such as Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, Sports Afield, True, Argosy, Fur Fish and Game and a host of others. He served as Contributing Editor to Field and Stream for several years. He also contributed to three Hunting and Fishing Encyclopedias.
Mr. Elliot was a lifetime member of the New England Outdoor Writers Association, serving on the Board of Directors for that organization. He is a past Master of the Augusta Lodge #141 AF&AM, and a member of the Kora Temple Shriners in Lewiston. He was also a member of the Maine Association of Retirees. He received the "Silver Trout" award from the Trout Unlimited Organization.
Bob’s love of fishing and Maine’s outdoors was only surpassed by his love and devotion to his wife and family. He spent many happy hours in the field pursuing his passions, fly fishing, hunting upland birds and golfing.
A son, Harvey Elliot, and brothers John and Ben, two sisters, Alice and Mae, predeceased him.
Surviving are his loving wife of 77 years, Annie of Kennebunk, Me.; daughter Mary Ann Rico and her husband Enrique of Houston, Texas; two sons, Neil Elliot of McMinnville, Oregon, and Dale Elliot of Mount Vernon, Me.; one brother, Bill Elliot and his wife Alzena of Hampton, N.H.; twelve grandchildren; twenty-two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
ELLIOT - Robert O. E. Elliot, 99, died Sunday morning, July 28, 2002 at home in Kennebunk, Maine. A graveside committal will be held at 2 p.m. on August 17 at Pine Grove Cemetery in Belgrade. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Robert Moffitt
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Robert Moffitt, 82, of St. Petersburg and formerly of York, Me., died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at the Bon-Secour-Maria Manor in St. Petersburg.
Mr. Moffitt was born Feb. 20, 1920, in Athol, Mass., the son of the late Joseph M. and Roseanne (Chamberland) Moffitt. He attended local schools and later enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served his country during World War II. Mr. Moffitt worked for 30 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a metals inspector. He retired in 1980.
Mr. Moffitt was very active in the York community, having served on the Board of Directors of the York Community Services. He volunteered many hours of his time to Meals on Wheels. He was very active in various church groups at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in York. Mr. Moffitt was one of the first Eucharistic Lay Ministers in the York area. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 56 of York.
Mr. Moffitt is survived by his loving wife, the former Iva R. Stover, whom he married in May of 1943. He also leaves behind a daughter, Deborah J. Falvey of St. Petersburg, and a son, David J. Moffitt of Romulus, N.Y. Mr. Moffitt will be deeply missed by his cherished five grandchildren. Mr. Moffitt was predeceased by his two sisters, Doris Giordano and Alice Aguda.
MOFFITT - Robert Moffitt, 82, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of York, Me., died Aug. 7, 2002. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in York. The Mass to celebrate his life will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 16. The Rev. Albert Colputts, Pastor of St. Christopher’s will be the celebrant. A private burial will take place prior to the Mass in First Parish Cemetery, York. Harriet R. (MacDonald) Patterson
LOWELL, Mass. - Harriet R. (MacDonald) Patterson, 82, died after a lengthy illness on Wednesday, Aug. 14 , 2002, at Northwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born on Aug. 31, 1919, in Lewiston, Maine, she was the daughter of the late W. Joseph and the late Mary (O’Sullivan) MacDonald. She attended Lowell schools and graduated from Notre Dame Academy with the Class of 1937.
In 1938 she married George H. Patterson, who passed away in 1988. She made her home in the Pawtucketville section of Lowell for many years. She was a member of St. Rita’s Cadets in the ’30s and St. Rita’s Sodality. She lived in Rye, N.H., for 14 years before returning to Lowell. She moved to the Centralville section of Lowell and was a communicant of St. Michael’s church. She worked as a bookkeeper for more than 30 years for Sears in Lowell and for Mass. Gas in Portsmouth, N.H., before she retired. In recent years she served as a volunteer at the Saints Memorial Cancer Center.
She is survived by one daughter, Retired Air Force Maj. Gail F. Patterson of Redlands, Calif.; one son, George "Jock" Patterson and his wife, Susan, of Lowell; two grandchildren, John and Timothy Patterson of Lowell; one brother, James MacDonald and his wife, Doris, of Dracut; and many nieces and nephews.
PATTERSON - Harriet Patterson, 82, of Lowell, Mass., died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002. Jackie Casey Houldsworth
PORTSMOUTH - Jackie Casey Houldsworth, wife, mother, grandmother, friend and quilter, died peacefully on Wednesday morning, Aug. 14, 2002, at York Hospital after a yearlong battle with cancer. She was the wife of Donald C. Houldsworth, and the two had resided in Portsmouth for more than 30 years.
She was born in Cheyenne, Wyo., and graduated from Cheyenne High School and the St. Paul School of Nursing in Dallas, Texas. She joined the U.S. Air Force in 1950 and, after completing the required training programs at Fort Letterman, Calif., was certified as a registered nurse anesthetist. She met her husband while both were assigned to Ernest Harmon Air Force Base, Newfoundland.
She remained on active duty for 15 years, attained the rank of major and resigned just prior to the birth of their daughter, Kimberley. Son Christopher was born 2½ years later and the family was reassigned to Pease Air Force Base in 1972.
While Kim and Chris attended St. Patrick’s School in Portsmouth, Jackie served on the PTO and the School Board. She was a communicant of St. James Parish.
She was an avid and accomplished quilter. She was a member of the Cocheco Quilt Guild, the Seabreeze Quilters, and the Quilt-a-Month Guild. Her quilts have been displayed in quilt shows throughout the area and she always had projects in various stages of completion.
Besides her husband and children, she is survived by her grandson, Tyler Casey Houldsworth, whom she adored; a sister, Doris Orrison of Cape Coral, Fla.; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Her brother, Donald, predeceased her.
HOULDSWORTH - Jackie Casey Houldsworth, of Portsmouth, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. James Church, Lafayette Road, Portsmouth.
