Frances E. Varney Marshall
YORK, Maine - Frances "Polly" Elizabeth Varney Marshall, 97, formerly of York Street, York, and Weston, Mass., died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth, N.H.
Born in 1904 in Maryland, she grew up in Newton, Mass. After graduating from Vassar College in 1926, earning a Phi Beta Kappa key in physics, she taught high school math, studied art in Florence, Italy, and architecture at M.I.T.
She and her husband, Edward Walker Marshall, summered in York, where they ran the Marshall House and Emerson hotels. They wintered in Weston, Mass.
In Massachusetts, she was a member of the Weston Historical Society, the Weston School Board, the Golden Ball Tavern Trust, the Boston Skating Club, and was an overseer of Old Sturbridge Village.
In Maine, she joined the York Harbor Reading Room, the Old Gaol and Wilcox House, the Piscataqua Garden Club and Laudholm Farm.
She was predeceased by her husband.
Survivors include two daughters, Anne Varney Tarbell of South Portland, and Jean Dennett Rae of Southport, Conn.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Marion R. Sanborn
ANDOVER, N.H. - Marion R. Sanborn, 75, of Currier Road, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at Concord Hospital.
She was born in Concord on Jan. 25, 1927, the daughter of Leo and Roseanna (King) Miner. She was a graduate of St. John’s High School in Concord and attended Mount St. Mary’s College. While living in Concord, she was active in the Eastman School Mother’s Club and Swift Water Girl Scouts.
She formerly lived in Newington for about 24 years, where she was active in the Newington Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, the Rockingham County Extension Club and the 4H Clubs of America. A resident of Andover since 1986, she attended St. Peter’s Church in Concord.
In addition to her husband of 54 years, Everett J. Sanborn Jr., she is survived by two daughters, Pamela Sanborn of Revere Beach, Mass., and Jayne Donnolly of Andover; one brother, Henry Miner of East Concord; two granddaughters, Aimee Naseman of Peabody, Mass., and Joelle Donnelly of Andover; and many nieces and nephews.
SANBORN - Marion R. Sanborn, 75, of Andover, N.H., died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002. There are no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Peter’s Church, 135 North State St. in Concord. Immediately following the Mass, a reception will be held in the parish hall. John J. Condon
PORTSMOUTH - John J. Condon, 89, of 777 Middle Road, died Friday, Aug., 9, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born in Portsmouth on April 12, 1913, he was the son of Thomas and Catherine (Brennan) Condon. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and a resident of the Creek Neighborhood for most of his life.
He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard during World War II. After the war, he joined the Portsmouth Police Department, retiring as a captain; at the time of his death he had been the oldest living retired policeman in the state of New Hampshire. He went on to work at the Seabrook racetrack for several years after his retirement. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church.
The husband of the late Catherine (Kennedy) Condon, who died in 1990, he is survived by his nieces and nephews, Dan and Marianne Arndorfer, Thomas Hughes, Richard Hughes, John and Noreen Grady, Ernest and Mary Jane Fusi, Kevin and Margaret Guy, and Thomas and Laurie Collins; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
CONDON - John J. Condon, 89, of 777 Middle Road, Portsmouth, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Visiting hours are 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.
Hakon Harald Berg
SANFORD, Maine - Hakon Harald Berg, 76, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at The Goodall Hospital in Sanford.
He was born in France on Sept. 10, 1925, the son of Ragnar Berg.
He worked for the civil service for 37 years. During many of those years he worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as an architect. He later retired and went to work as the code enforcement officer for North Berwick for seven years.
Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Diane; his sons, Matthew Berg of Sanford, Kenneth Berg and wife Shelly and their two children, Sonya and Brian, of Pennsylvania, and Gary and wife Sue and their two children, Jeffrey and Kirsten, of Eliot; daughters Kate Meagher and husband Steve of Sanford, Laurie Hillis and husband Bob of Florida, and daughter Peggy.
BERG - Hakon Harald Berg, 76, of Sanford, Maine, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Heald Funeral Home, 580 Main St., Springvale. Marcelle L. Lord
STRATHAM, N.H. - Marcelle L. Lord, 90, of Stratham, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2002 surrounded by her family, at Exeter Healthcare.
She was born Oct. 1, 1911, in Quebec, Canada, the daughter of the late Lionel and Leona (LaBonville) Legendre.
Mrs. Lord was predeceased by her husband of 35 years, Almon M. Lord.
She resided in Rollinsford, Amherst, Epsom, Manchester and most recently in Stratham for the past 17 years. She was a devoted housewife, homemaker and mother to her five children.
Mrs. Lord volunteered for the Girl Scouts, was a member of the Women’s Republican Committee, and the Stratham Community Church and the Women’s Guild. Her love of cooking and generosity will be missed by all whose lives she touched.
She is survived by three sons, Paul St. Clair of Strafford, Leon St. Clair of Napoleon, Ohio, Emile St. Clair of Deerfield; twin daughters, Joan Gough of Stratham, Jane Geider of Barre, Vt.; her beloved 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Blanche Martino, Eva Gosselin, Rose Nelson and Alma Baillergeon; two brothers, Emile Legendre and Maurice Legendre; and several nieces and nephews.
LORD - Marcelle Lord, 90, of Stratham, N.H., died Aug. 9, 2002. Services will be held at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter at 4 p.m. on Thursday. Rusdi Rizki
DOVER. - Rusdi Rizki, 41, formerly of Dover, died suddenly on Aug. 8, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.
He was born on June 27, 1961, in Indonesia. He was the son of Nesus Roring and Catoo Nayoan. He used to work for Simplex as a machine operator. He enjoyed fishing, and playing the guitar and keyboard for his church. He wrote his own worship songs.
He is survived by his wife, Maria Jamilah; his mother, Catoo Nayoan; one stepson, Natalius Immanuel; three stepdaughters, Eva Lidiawati, Zarah Emyanah and Hanna Novianty; two brothers, Jimmy and Franky Roring; three sisters, Owi, Henny and Irma Roring.
He was predeceased by his father, Nesus.
RIZKI - Rusdi Rizki, 41, formerly of Dover, died Aug. 8, 2002. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover. D. Morris Lamprey
NORTH HAMPTON - D. Morris Lamprey, 92, of 63 Atlantic Ave., died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at Webster at Rye. A lifelong resident of the community, he was born here on May 26, 1910, the son of the late Austin He attended local schools and graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1927 and Wentworth Institute in Boston in 1929.
In 1929 he worked in Detroit at Cadillac in the upholstery department and later in a Detroit machine shop. He returned to Wentworth Institute and taught tool making and tool design before returning to North Hampton in 1934 to work in the family business, Lamprey Brothers, which today is a full-service heating, cooling and fuel oil business.
He took over the business after his father died in 1944 and his Uncle Warren retired in 1950 at age 75. He operated the business until his retirement in 1986 at age 75 after 52 years of service.
He will be remembered for his beautiful Belgian horses grazing in the fields and harnessed for show. He was a member of the Belgian Draft Horse Association.
In addition to his generous spirit in helping people over the years in their time of need, he served the town of North Hampton on the Budget Committee, and back in the 1940s he served on the Building Committee for the elementary school.
He was the husband of the late Gertrude (Dow) Lamprey, who died in 1992. He was also predeceased by a sister, Mary Lamprey Naves.
Family members include two sons and daughters-in-law, David J. Lamprey and his wife, Joanne, and Charles A. Lamprey and his wife, Sally, and one daughter, Josephine A. "Joanne" Lamprey, all of North Hampton; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two nephews.
LAMPREY - D. Morris Lamprey, 92, of 63 Atlantic Ave., North Hampton, died Aug. 11, 2002. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. After cremation, private interment will be in the Little River Cemetery, North Hampton. Nancy Charles Cavanaugh
YORK BEACH, Maine - Nancy Charles Cavanaugh, known for her poise and grace, died peacefully in her beloved beach bouse on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002. She was surrounded by the large and loving family that she created and nurtured with her husband of 54 years, Thomas F. Cavanaugh.
Her six children, Brenda Cavanaugh, Thomas Cavanaugh Jr., Michael Cavanaugh, James Cavanaugh, Jill Knowles and her husband, David, and Nancy Lou Buciak and her husband, Eric; as well as her nine grandchildren, Dick Genest, Sean and Christian Doherty, Brenna Taccetta, Caitlin Cavanaugh, Davis and Dana Knowles, and Erica and Cayleigh Buciak; and her three great-grandchildren, Calli Genest, Finnegan Doherty, and Lillian Taccetta, surrounded and embraced her at the time of her death.
She was predeceased by her father and mother, Lawrence Charles and Doris Craig.
She was born in 1927 in Franklin, N.H. Even as a young girl, she captured everyone’s attention with her elegance and style.
She graduated from Central High School in 1945, and went on to attend Hesser Business College. She was also a member of the Elliot Hospital Junior Associates.
Her strawberry blond hair and regal posture captured Tom’s heart in 1946. The two were married on Feb. 7, 1948, in Manchester, N.H. They made their home in Manchester, where Tom was the president of Cavanaugh Bros. Motors. They were the third generation to spend summers with their ever growing family at the Cavanaugh beach house in York Beach. Over the years, she became a familiar and appreciated symbol of life in York Beach. Anyone and everyone who came to town was sure to see her swinging on her wicker porch swing. She spent most of her time at the beach house filling her home and family with love and warmth. When her husband retired in 1991, they made York Beach their permanent summer home. She was a communicant of Star of the Sea Church of York Beach.
She was an extremely active and energetic woman. She was frequently seen cruising the boardwalk on her bicycle, and she was a longtime member of the Cape Neddick Country Club, where she won many awards in the women’s golf league. She was also an avid skier and swimmer.
She and her husband spent their winters on St. Croix, U.S.V.I., where she truly indulged her passion for golf and swimming. On Feb. 27, 1993, while golfing on the Reef Golf Course in St. Croix, she hit a hole-in-one, an achievement that most golfers only dream of.
Nancy was admired everywhere she went. There wasn’t a person on the island who did not know the beautiful Mrs. Cavanaugh who was famous for wearing a red hibiscus flower in her hair.
She left her family with a legacy of love, kindness and joy that is too enormous for words, too powerful for adequate expression, and so generous that a lifetime of thanks could not even begin to repay their debt to her.
Those fortunate enough to have been touched by her were made better people by simply knowing her. Her generous heart and soul will be greatly missed but always remembered by her family and friends.

Patricia Ann Nickerson
HAMPTON - Patricia Ann Nickerson, 53, of 46 Mill Road, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at the Elliot Hospital in Manchester after a brief illness.
She was born in Boston, Mass., on July 15, 1949, the daughter of M. Leo and Theresa M. (Kelly) Kelly.
Raised in Marshfield, Mass., she graduated from Marshfield High School with the Class of 1967.
She had been an active partner with her husband in the family business, Sea Port Property Maintenance Co., for the past 15 years.
She was a member of and faithfully attended the First Baptist Church of Hampton Falls, was an avid roller skater, and loved to read, but most important was the love for her family.
In addition to her parents of Hampton, she leaves her husband of 35 years, Bruce I. Nickerson; four daughters, Michelle Rowell of Franklin, Christine Nali of Hampton, Linda-Jean Dionne and her husband, Sean, of North Hampton, and Jennifer L. "JJ" Nickerson of Hampton; four grandchildren, Jonathan Rowell, Joel Nali, Shayna Rowell and Jennifer Nali; two brothers, Robert F. Kelly of Mattapoisett, Mass., and James M. Kelly of Hampton; one sister, Donna M. MacFadden of Salisbury, Mass.; her mother-in-law, Marilyn Cote of Norwood, Mass.; her father-in-law, Irvin W. Nickerson of Durham; several nieces and nephews; and her pets Cali and Sasha.

Altona Frances Mahan
DOVER - Altona Frances Mahan, 75, of 20 Sunnybrooke Drive, and formerly of Portsmouth, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a period of failing health.
Born on Nov. 29, 1926, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of John and Julia (Douglass) Small.
She was employed as a dietitian at the Mark Wentworth Home of Portsmouth until her retirement.
She loved her children and loved to give to and help people. She enjoyed gardening, walking and taking care of animals.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albert Mahan; three brothers, Roy and Ben Small and Gene Watson; and three sisters, Lucille Burns, Ruth Small and Blanche Washok.
She is survived by three sons, Jack Mahan and his wife, Gail, of Dover, Albert Mahan and his wife, Sharon, of Portsmouth, and Robert Mahan and his wife, Sandra, of Dover; two brothers, Robert Watson of Delaware, and George Francois of Portsmouth; six grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
MAHAN - Altona Frances Mahan, 75, of Dover, and formerly of Portsmouth, died Aug. 12, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at the Highland Cemetery on Rogers Road in Kittery, Maine.
