Peter J. Agrafiotis
RYE - Peter J. Agrafiotis, 97, of Rye and Manchester, founder of the first public relations and advertising agency in New Hampshire, succumbed to pneumonia on Sunday, July 28, 2002, at the Maine Veterans Home.
Mr. Agrafiotis was born in Karditsa in northern Greece in May 1905, and was the last surviving sibling of six who emigrated with their parents in 1916. Like so many immigrant children in that day, he began work almost upon arrival in his newly adopted land, in this case as a bell boy in a Manchester hotel, of which he much later became an owner.
He graduated from the University of New Hampshire, Class of 1929, in three years. He began work in advertising with the Hearst Co., and later for the state of N.H. and the U.S. Employment Service.
In 1942, Mr. Agrafiotis enlisted in the military to participate in World War II. Before being shipped out, he married the former Helen Loumos of Belmont, Mass. Following Officers Candidate School and two years of homeside service, he was stationed for two years in the European Theater of Operations as headquarters commandant, 9th Air Force Service Command, and as executive officer of the Intelligence Division, U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey. He graduated from the Air Intelligence School and the Defense Strategy Seminar of the National War College.
He was president of the John Start Chapter of the Reserve Officers’ Association in New Hampshire and was Air Force Academy liaison officer coordinator for New Hampshire. He remained active in the Air Force reserve service with annual active duty assignments at the Pentagon until his retirement in 1965 with the rank of colonel.
Prior to his retirement, he was awarded the Joint Services Commendation Medal by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for services performed as administrator of a National Security Seminar. He was the first reserve officer to be so recognized.
In his civilian life, Mr. Agrafiotis provided advertising and public relations services throughout the state of New Hampshire, primarily in the banking industry. He worked extensively with nonprofit organizations such as the National Conference of Christians and Jews, The 100 Club and the Marine Memorial Fund. Mr. Agrafiotis and his agency, Agrafiotis and Associates, were frequently employed in the New Hampshire primary and state political campaigns. He was a consultant to politicians such as Sens. Styles Bridges and Norris Cotton, and Gen. Alexander Haig.
Mr. Agrafiotis was a member of the Grand Lodge of New Hampshire, Free and Accepted Masons. In March of this year, he received the 50-year Veteran’s Medal. He was active in alumni affairs at the University of New Hampshire for many years and in 1996 became president of the Class of 1929.
Upon retirement in 1972, Mr. Agrafiotis and his wife spent winters in Naranja, Fla., and summers in Rye until Hurricane Andrew destroyed their Florida home. The couple then took up year-round residence in Portsmouth to be nearer to their children.
Until 2000, when failing health dictated a move to assisted living, Peter Agrafiotis enjoyed a robust old age. He was often seen walking jauntily around Portsmouth, striking up conversations in cafes, banks, shops and his favorite spot, the public library. He drove his car until age 94, mostly for frequent visits to his wife who lived with their son and his partner, Janice Plourde, after an illness that nearly took her life in 1998.
He was predeceased by his wife, Helen (Loumos) Agrafiotis, in February of this year.
Mr. Agrafiotis is survived by his daughter, Sandy Agrafiotis of South Berwick, Maine; and his son, Peter G. Agrafiotis of Cape Neddick, Maine; and many nieces and nephews
