Llewelyn Bulley
KITTERY, Maine - Llewelyn "Sam" Bulley, 86, of Bicknell Street, died Monday August 4, 2002 in Portsmouth, N.H.
Born in Westfield, Maine, on April 22, 1916, he was a son of George and Ada (Morrell) Bulley. He attended local schools graduating from Bridgewater Academy in Bridgewater with the Class of 1935. He furthered his education at Franklin Institute.
He served his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force.
He owned and operated automotive repair shops in Bridgewater, Mass. and in Boston, before moving to the Seacoast. He worked on the construction of the Pease Air Base in Newington and remained at the base as an aerospace ground power supervisor for many years. He became a field engineer for SIR Insurance Co out of Boston until his retirement in the late 1970’s.
He and his loving wife Helene (Grace) Bulley retired to Tavares, Fla., where they made their home for over 20 years. In 1995 they returned to Kittery near their children and grandchildren.
His first love was his family as a devoted husband and father. He also enjoyed his affiliation with the Lions Club, as a past King Lion of the Kittery Club and past Deputy District Governor, he was also active in the Lions Club during his time in Florida. In his younger days he enjoyed snowmobiling and camping. He also enjoyed traveling and was an outstanding cook, known for his talents as a bread maker.
He is survived by his children - daughters Beverley Bryant and her husband, Gordon, of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and Bonnie Gould and her husband Larry of Auburn, Maine; his sons, Clifford Bulley and his wife Brenda of Vallejo, Calif., and George Brooks and his wife Nancy of Berwick, Maine.
He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Ronald Grace, of Atco, N.J., and two sisters-in-law, Shirley Williams of Kittery, Maine, and Lois Grace of Kittery Point, Maine. He has ten grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren as well as two great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Pelkey Funeral Home 125 Old Post Road Kittery, Maine, with family and friends invited to visit from 10 a.m. until the start of the service at the funeral home. Internment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery in Berwick following the funeral. Please omit flowers. Donations may be made in his memory to the Brain Injury Association of Maine, 325 Main St., Waterville, ME 04901. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
Henry Einar Carlson
YORK, Maine - Henry Einar Carlson passed away July 28 at Sentry Hill.
Carlson lived most of his life in the Worcester, Mass. area and was a graduate of Commerce High School and Becker Junior College. He was a carpenter and worked in the Boston Navy Yard and various lumber companies. Upon retirement he worked at the Worcester Science Center.
He was a life-long member of Greendale People’s Church in Worcester, Mass., a member of the Boylston Masonic Lodge in West Boylston, Mas., AARP, and the York Senior Center in York, Maine. He also served as a long time golf marshall at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Sutton, Mass.
His first wife, Hazel D. Long., predeceased him. Henry leaves his second wife Mary Wyman Webber Carlson of York Harbor, Maine; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr.and Mrs. Ronald Carlson of Lehighton, Pa.; two stepsons Stephen Webber of Ontario, Canada, and Scott Webber of Holden, Mass.; a stepdaughter Carole Ballard of Maitland, Fla.; three granddaughters; six step-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service held at 2 p.m. Aug. 27, at Greendale People’s Church in Worcester, Mass. The family requested flowers be omitted and donations made in Henry’s name to the Greendale People’s Church Memorial Fund, 25 Francis St., Worcester, MA 01606.
Edgar A. Roberts
KENSINGTON - Edgar A. Roberts, 74, died Aug. 5, 2002, at the Exeter Healthcare after a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 26, 1928, in Plaistow, the son of the late Benjamin A. and Mary (Brewer) Roberts.
Formerly of Amesbury, Mass., he had resided in Kensington for the last 26 years.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was employed at Nichol’s Poultry Farm in Kingston, from 1947 to 1958, and was employed for 10 years as a custodian at Phillips Exeter Academy. He was a member of the Warren Masonic Lodge in Amesbury, Mass.
In addition to his wife of 46 years, Lois (Shaw) Roberts, of Exeter, he is survived by his niece and nephew; two sisters-in-law; and several cousins.
ROBERTS - Edgar A. Roberts, 74, of Kensington, died Aug. 5, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, at the High Street Cemetery in Hampton, N.H. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in Mr. Roberts’ memory to the charity of one’s choice. The Brewitt Funeral Service, 14 Pine St., Exeter, is in charge of arrangements.
Richard E. Winslow Jr.
RYE - Commander Richard E. Winslow Jr., U.S. Navy (Ret.), 98, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, at his home.
Born in Boston, on May 11, 1904, to Dr. Richard E. Winslow and Clara (Fales) Winslow of Norwood, Mass., he was a graduate of Amherst College, Class of 1926, and Harvard Business School, Class of 1928.
In 1939, he received a commission in the U.S. Naval Reserve, and was called to active duty in Sept. of 1941, in the U.S. Navy, where he became a career officer. He retired in June, 1950, after serving his final tour of duty at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
After his naval career, he served for four years as Treasurer of the Shipyard Credit Union, (now Northeast Credit Union). He was an active member of the National Sojourners’ Portsmouth Chapter, the New Hampshire Chapter of The Retired Officers’ Association, and also served as past director and board member of the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.
In addition to his wife of 72 years, Virginia E. (Powell) Winslow, he is survived by his son, Dr. Richard E. Winslow III of Rye; his daughter, Ellen E. Ruhl, and her husband, Dr. Donald L. Ruhl, of Haverhill, Mass.; two granddaughters, Beth E. Wills and her husband, Dean A. Wills of Newburyport, Mass., and Heather E.W. Mack and her husband, Shawn R. Mack, of Southwick, Mass.
At the request of the family, there will be no visiting hours, and the service will be private.
WINSLOW - Richard E. Winslow, Jr., of Rye, formerly of Norwood, Mass., died Aug. 4, 2002. Burial at Highland Cemetery in Norwood will be private. Please omit floewrs. Arrangements by May Funeral Home, Norwood.
Carleton D. Staples
KITTERY, Maine - A funeral was held on Monday August 5, 2002 for Carleton D. Staples of Eliot, who died on Friday August 2, 2002 at his home.
The service was held at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery with the Rev. Gail Kindberg intrem pastor of the First Congregational Church of Eliot officiating. In attendance were family, friends, neighbors, representatives of the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Association and fellow Eliot Lions Club members and church members.
Following the funeral the Rev. Kindberg offered a committal service at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot. Pall bearers were Mr. Staples’ grandsons and two grand-nephews. All were invited for a time of sharing, remembrance and refreshment at the MacPherson Hall of the First Congregational Church in Eliot. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
Helen D. Ryan
KINGSTON - Helen D. Ryan, 89, formerly of Kingston Pines, died Aug. 5, 2002, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood, N.H.
She was born April 2, 1913, in Milford, the daughter of the late John and Ali Harris. Formerly of Gloucester, Mass., she had resided in Kingston from 1974 until 2001, when she moved to the Rockingham County Home in Brentwood.
She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed walking four to five miles a day until the age of 86. She was a devoted mother and grandmother.
She was predeceased by her husband, Paul D. Ryan, who died in 1986, and a grandson, Paul R. Nichols, who died in 1996.
She is survived by her son, Robert and his wife Pat Ryan of Gloucester, Mass.; her daughter, Paula, and her husband Richard Nichols of Hampton, N.H.; four granddaughters; three great-granddaughters; and two great-grandsons.
RYAN - Helen D. Ryan, 89, of Kingston, N.H., .formerly of Kingston Pines, died Aug. 5, 2002. Private services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002. The Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, N.H. is in charge of arrangements. Mildred Wood Marden
HANOVER - Mildred Wood Marden, 92, died Aug. 5, 2002 at Hanover Terrace, surrounded by her family.
She was born February 25, 1910 in Newton, Mass, the daughter of Howard and Hazel (Pike) Wood. She grew up in Melrose, Mass, graduated from Simmons College in 1932 and married Russell J. Marden in 1940. She moved to La Rochelle, France in 1952, and lived in various towns in France while her husband worked for the U.S. Army. She was a member of the Christian Science Mother Church and served as church pianist while in France. She loved to explore the historic sites of Europe, and shared her enthusiasm with many girls as a Girl Scout leader. She moved to Portsmouth, N.H. in 1963 and later lived in Rogers, Ark., before returning to Portsmouth. In her later years, she moved to the E.E. Boit Home in Wakefield, Mass., and, finally, to Hanover Terrace. She was predeceased by her husband, Russell, and her brother, Donald Wood of Wimberly, Texas. Survivors include her sister, Gladys Wood of Wakefield, Mass.; her daughters, Patricia Marden of Ashland, Ore. and Laurel Sheridan of Corinth, Vt., two grandchildren and on
e great-grandchild.
MARDEN - Mildred Wood MaRden, 92, of Hanover, N.H., died Aug. 5, 2002. In keeping with her beliefs, there will be no services. Memorial donations may be made to the E.E. Boit Home, 5 Bennett St., Wakefield, MA 01880. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, NH.
Donald M. Moreau Sr.
PORTSMOUTH - A memorial service will be held for Donald M. Moreau Sr., who died on Tuesday, July 30, 2002. He was born on Sept. 21, 1914, in Ludlow, Vt. He resided in Portsmouth for most of his life. He owned and operated the Canteen Photo Studio on Daniel Street. Portsmouth for many years. He originated the first pawn shop in Portsmouth on Maplewood Avenue, and operated a small fleet of taxi cabs known as City Cab.
The service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8, in the function room at 40 Bedford Way, Portsmouth.
Daniel J. Callahan Sr.
LEWISTON, Maine - Daniel J. Callahan Sr., 86 of Schooner Estates formerly of Mechanic Falls died Monday at Central Maine Medical Center.
He was born in Lewiston, Jan. 25, 1916 the son of Sherman and Cora Staples Callahan. He attended school in Waterford and Mechanic Falls High School. He was self employed in the construction business with his brother for many years. He was a director of Oxford Bank and Trust, a member of the Maine House of Representatives for eight years, a director of the Maine Turnpike Authority for six years, he served on the Mechanic Falls School Board and Sanitary District, was a 64-year member of Tyrian Lodge No. 73 AF&AM, a member of Dwinal Chapter OEs, Scottish Rites and Kora Temple. He enjoyed flying his own plane and hunting with his bird dogs. He faithfully served his country in the Army in the 1930s and the Navy during World War II serving in the Pacific. In 1936 he married Myrtle Berrywho died April 11, 1999.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Gloria and Pat Gordon of Las Vegas, Nev., and Elayne and James Maher of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. and Poland; a son and his wife Daniel Jr. and Judy of Minot,; two brothers, Fred S. of Auburn and Sherman F. of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Irene Hapgood, and two brothers, Herbert and Allen.
CALLAHAN - Daniel J. Callahan Sr., 86, of Auburn, formerly of Mechanic Falls, died Aug. 5, 2002. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Minot Corner Methodist Church with interment in the Lane Cemetery, East Poland. Constance Eva (Gaspar) Owens
ELIOT, Maine - Constance Eva (Gaspar) Owens, 61, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at York Hospital. She was the wife of the late Richard J. Owens.
Born on Oct. 3, 1940, in York Village, she was the daughter of the late Charles Allan and Inez Helene (Fuller) Gaspar.
She was a 1958 graduate of Traip Academy in Kittery. In 1984 she graduated from the New Hampshire Vocational Technical College with an associate’s degree in applied electronic technology. For many years she and her husband owned and operated the New England Janitorial Service.
She had been an amateur radio operator for more than 30 years, with an Extra Class call sign W1WS, making contacts with other "hams" all over the world. She was a member of the Port City Amateur Radio Club and participated in the club’s annual Field Days for many years. In recent years she also enjoyed chatting with friends on the Internet. She was also a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. She enjoyed ceramics and was an avid sports fan, especially of basketball.
She is survived by a daughter, Melissa Langford and her husband, David, of Eliot; a son, Rick Owens and his wife, Wendy, of South Berwick; three grandchildren, Laura, Rhiannon and Nicholas; two brothers, Charles Gaspar and his wife, Carolyn, of North Berwick, and Glenn Gaspar and his wife, Bernadette, of Bangor; a niece; and several nephews and cousins.
OWENS - Constance Eva (Gaspar) Owens, 61, of Eliot, Maine, died Aug. 6, 2002. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. Pastor Charles R. Downes, of the South Eliot Advent Christian Church, will conduct the services. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Shriners Burn Institute, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home of Kittery.
Ruth J. Brown
CONWAY - Ruth J. Brown of Conway died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
She was born in Everett, Mass., on May 26, 1919, to Frederick L. and Eleanora (Johnson) Hersey. She moved to Portsmouth at the age of 5 and attended Portsmouth schools, graduating from Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1927. After graduation she went to work for Railway Mail Association as a statistician.
She married Arthur F. Brown Jr. on Sept. 8, 1946.
While in Portsmouth she was a member of the Middle Street Baptist Church, where she served many years as a Sunday school teacher. During World War II she was a Gray Lady. She was also a member of the Graffort Women’s Club.
The family moved to Conway in 1962 when her husband accepted the presidency of Carroll County Trust Co. She became active in the Conway Women’s Club, serving as president from 1965 to 1967. She was later elected state president of the New Hampshire Federation of Women’s Clubs and served from 1984 to 1986. For her community service project during her tenure, she chose to raise money to build a museum to house artifacts and historical information regarding the Old Man of the Mountain and worked closely with Nils Nielsen, the original caretaker of the Old Man of the Mountain.
In 1978 the Browns purchased the Majestic Theatre Block and spent many hours refurbishing the theater, which they reopened in 1979. Once the theater was reopened, she spent many hours in the ticket booth while her husband sold popcorn and soda. During this period she also opened the Conway Singer Sewing Machine Center and became well-known for her sewing abilities. She was a member of the Conway Village Congregational Church.
For the past 14 years they wintered in Sun City Center, Fla., where she was a member of the United Community Church and Ladies of the Shrine No. 105, and she helped organize and then served as the first president of the King’s Point Women’s Club.
She was predeceased by an infant son, Edward; two brothers; and a sister.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Arthur; four daughters, Janet Dugger and her husband, Thomas, of St. Augustine, Fla., Marion Pevarnek and her husband, Albert, of Scarborough, Maine, Joyce Walch of Nashua, and Nancy Brown of Conway; eight grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Betty Russ of Dover.
BROWN - Ruth J. Brown, of Conway, died Aug. 7, 2002. Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Conway Village Congregational Church, Main Street, Conway.
