Dr. Mariana Dieste Mead

BEVERLY COVE, Mass. - Dr. Mariana Dieste Mead, 47, formerly of Marshall, Texas, an eye surgeon for whom patients came first, died on July 29, 2002, at Massachusetts General Hospital after surviving four years with pancreatic cancer.

She was born in Marshall, Texas, to Dr. and Mrs. Antonio Dieste. She often accompanied her father, a local surgeon, on his hospital visits. She attended the University of Texas, graduating in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing, and began her first career as an emergency room nurse at Ben Taub General Hospital in Houston, Texas. Always driven to make a bigger difference, she attended Baylor Medical School, finishing second in the class of 1985.

She moved to Boston for her internship at Newton Wellesley Hospital, then completed her residency in ophthalmology at the Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary. With a passion for teaching, she became the first female chief resident in its 165-year history and later became an attending physician and the director of the emergency department. In 1987 she traveled to India and volunteered her surgical skills, performing cataract operations and teaching local ophthalmologists. In 1992 she joined Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston, where she developed her cornea specialty until her illness.

She was a contributing author of many ophthalmology papers and books, and spoke at conferences internationally. She was an assistant clinical professor of ophthalmology at Tufts University and a clinical instructor in ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. She had a passion for teaching the residents, focusing on the treatment of the person, not just the ailment.

She was blessed with four years of bountiful life after her diagnosis. She offered her young daughters a condensed lifetime of parenting, travel and adventure, imbuing them with her valor, enthusiasm and caring. She was a tireless contributor to the community, in spite of her continual treatments. Even in her illness she gave to the medical community, participating for two years in the endostatin clinical trials at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. She built lasting relationships at Dana Farber and at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she became an integral participant in her care teams. She maintained the highest respect for the people at these institutions even when they could no longer save her, trusting their expertise and appreciating their compassion. She was a fighter and a marathoner, both as an athlete (Boston twice) and in her long battle with cancer. Her many friends will miss her giving personality, her drive and focus, her energy and her unfailingly positive attitude. Never complaining or

giving up, she accomplished with grace her goal of leaving the world a better place.
