Joseph W. Cormier

KITTERY, Maine - Joseph W. Cormier died June 17, 2002, at his home, with his loving family by his side.

He was born April 14, 1915, in Berwick, Maine, a son of Wilfred and Marion (Lacasse) Cormier.

He worked at Northern Utilities, retiring in 1980. He volunteered as a Kittery firefighter and enjoyed the outdoors, including hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. He would often visit the Rangeley area, which he enjoyed a great deal. He also enjoyed cleaning his garage when he wasn’t pursuing his love of the outdoors. His illness caused him to stop his activities, which broke his heart.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Violet M. Cormier; his children Judith French of Northwood, N.H., Richard Cormier of Springvale, and Thomas Cormier of Kittery Point; his brothers Leo Cormier of Rye, N.H., and Raymond Cormier of Ramona, Calif.; his sister, Irene Keefe of Portsmouth, N.H.; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many friends and acquaintances.

He was predeceased by his son Robert Cormier and his brother Omar Cormier.

CORMIER - Joseph W. Cormier, of Kittery, Maine, died June 17, 2002. Visiting hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today, June 19, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2002, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home. The Rev. George Wardwell, pastor of the Kittery Point Baptist Church, will conduct services. Interment will be private at a later date. At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, donations should be made to Portsmouth Home Health and Hospice Services, Unit #11, 95 Albany St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine, an Honored Dignity Provider.

Herman B. Windt

EXETER - Herman B. Windt, 89, died Friday, June 14, 2002, in Exeter. He had resided at Exeter Healthcare for the last four years, following a stroke.

He is survived by his wife, Belle Winnick Windt of Fairfield, Conn., to whom he was married for 58 years; his son, Dr. Mark R. Windt and his children Matthew, Erika and Brittany of Exeter; and a daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Peter Schlossberg and their children Jane and Johnathan of Falls Church, Va.

He was an avid horticulturist, specializing in prize roses and bonsai. He was a dressage horseman, riding his national champion horse, Shaitan. He was also a rodeo star with Chuck Connors. He enjoyed sailing and was a New England Star Boat Champion.

A World War II Army Air Corps veteran, he was a B-29 navigator and instructor and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific campaigns.

He was a member of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Loyalty Lodge 58, IOOF, and Masonic Temple Lodge 127, AF&AM. He worked with Jerry Lewis to establish the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign in Connecticut. He also founded the B’nai B’rith Chapter of Westport and Fairfield, Conn.

Services were held Monday, June 17, 2002, at Loyalty Cemetery in Fairfield, Conn. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Lung Association of New Hampshire, 9 Cedarwood Drive, Unit 12, Bedford, NH 03110.

Conrad J. Renner Jr.

DOVER - Conrad J. Renner Jr., 78, of 7 Robinwood Ave., died Saturday, June 15, 2002, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Born in Minneapolis, Minn., on May 12, 1924, he was a son of Conrad J. Sr. and Marion V. (Martin) Renner.

Lt. Cmdr. Renner was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., with the Class of 1947. During his 16 years on active duty, he served on various cruisers and destroyers overseas as communications, gunnery, operations, and executive officer and taught at Officer Candidate and Indoctrination schools in Newport, R.I.

After leaving active duty in 1959, he settled in Dover and began a 30-year second career teaching math at Dover High School. During his tenure, he coached the ski team, math team and Key Club and often manned the ticket booths at many sporting events at both Dover High School and the University of New Hampshire.

He retired from the Dover school system in 1990 and enjoyed life in the Seacoast area, which he loved.

Family members include his wife of 51 years, Shirley M. (Woodworth) Renner, a former Navy nurse; one son, Christopher J. Renner of Dover; one daughter, Navy Reserve Capt. Carol J. McDevitt and her husband, retired Army Col. James J. McDevitt, of Fairfax, Va.; a sister-in-law, Barbara Renner of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Caitlin J. McDevitt, Meghan J. McDevitt, Christopher J. Renner and Chancellor J. Renner; and several in-laws, nieces and nephews in the area.

He was predeceased by a brother, retired Air Force Col. William D. Renner; and a sister, Joyce Stolze.

A funeral service was held Thursday at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover, with Navy Chaplain Lt. Cmdr. R.A. Chapman officiating. Interment with military honors followed at Pine Hill Cemetery.

Helen Rosalia Macewich

RYE - Helen Rosalia Macewich died June 20, 2002, following a long, brave battle with cancer.

Born on Feb. 17, 1919, in Lynn, Mass., she was a daughter of Konstanty and Rosalia (Mikonis) Budrewicz.

She attended Groveland schools and was a retired dairy farmer.

She spent much of her time in her beautiful vegetable and flower gardens and loved and enjoyed all the wildlife that was all around her.

She was the widow of John S. Macewich Jr., who died 26 years ago.

A sister, Ann Smith, and a niece, Elizabeth Smith, predeceased her.

Survivors include a daughter, Helen M. Blanchard and her husband, Bud.

MACEWICH - Helen Rosalia (Budrewicz) Macewich, 83, of Rye, died Thursday, June 20, 2002. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Calvary Cemetery, Route 33, Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Flowers will be accepted.

Leo E. Schulten Jr.

MOULTONBORO - Leo E. Schulten Jr. of Moultonboro and Falls Church, Va., died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at the Lakes Region General Hospital, Laconia, of pneumonia. He had been ill with congestive heart failure for several years.

A career Army officer of the Adjutant General’s Corps, Col. Schulten served in Germany and Korea as well as many posts in the United States. In 1966, Leo retired and was then able to spend the summer months with his family at their cottage on Moultonboro Neck, where he was an avid fisherman. He was a communicant of St. Charles Church.

In addition to his wife of 59 years, Betty, Leo is survived by two sons, Tom of Kingsville, Md., and Steve of Dover; two brothers and three sisters, all residing in Louisville, Ky.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Teresa; and one brother.

SCHULTEN - Leo E. Schulten Jr. of Moultonboro, N.H., and Falls Church, Va., died June 19, 2002. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 27, 2002, at noon at St. Charles Church, 281 Daniel Webster Highway, Route 3, Meredith, N.H. There will be no calling hours. The Rev. Richard B. Thompson, pastor, will officiate. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Donations may be made in Leo’s memory to the charity of one’s choice. Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia, is in charge of the arrangements. Blanche M. Henderson

GREENLAND - Blanche M. Henderson, 70, of 705 Post Road, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at her home after nearly a yearlong fight against lung cancer.

She was born in Portsmouth on Dec. 8, 1931, and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1950. After graduation, she married Arthur Henderson; they celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary this past May.

She spent her early years raising her two sons, Rick and Ron, while working part-time as a waitress at the Rockingham and Wentworth hotels. She also spent a few years working at Portsmouth High School in the cafeteria. She loved the Seacoast area and often walked on the beach with her husband.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur Henderson of Greenland; and her sons, Richard Henderson and his daughter Pia of Portsmouth, and Ronald Henderson and his wife Debra and sons Scott and Daniel of Manassas, Va.

HENDERSON - Blanche M. Henderson, 70, of 705 Post Road, Greenland, died Thursday, June 20, 2002. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Friends are invited. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Father Sullivan Scholarship Fund, c/o Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Jane (Hill) Anderson

KITTERY, Maine - Jane (Hill) Anderson, 69, of Kittery, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Anderson was born March 22, 1933, in South Boston, Mass., the daughter of Richard and Bridget (King) Hill.

She lived in the Kittery area for more than 39 years. Over the years, she was an office secretary and worked for years at the Dick Levy NAPA Automotive Center. In her leisure time she enjoyed bowling. She was an accomplished bowler, well-known and respected in the Seacoast area. She served on the boards and committees of various bowling leagues throughout the area. She also loved to spend time with her family and grandchildren.

Jane was predeceased by her husband, James, who died in 1963.

She is survived by two sons, Joel Anderson of Berwick and James Anderson Jr. of Kittery; a sister, Fran Cahill of Pembroke, Mass.; her grandchildren, Mark Ryan Anderson and Erica Jane Anderson, both of Berwick; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Jeffery, who died in 1993; and a sister, Sue Clarke, who died in 1994.

ANDERSON - Jane Anderson, 69, of Kittery, Maine, died June 19, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Monday, June 24, 2002, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery. Gail Kindberg, interim pastor of the Eliot Congregational Church, will conduct services. Friends and relatives may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. until the time of the services on Monday. Burial will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38112. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, an Honored Dignity Provider.

Marjorie Morissette

BRENTWOOD - Marjorie Morissette, 78, formerly of Mechanic St. and the Margeson Apartments in Portsmouth, passed away June 16, 2002 at the Rockingham County Nursing Home after a long illness.

Born in Portland, Ore., Sept. 10, 1923, she was the daughter of Rudolph and Rose (Kersa) Probst and had been a resident of Portsmouth for many years.

The widow of Frank Morissette she is survived by two sons Philip and Larry both of California.

A private memorial service will be held in Portsmouth.

GROTON - Lt. Col. Richard W. Groton, U.S. Army, Ret., 82, of 39 Cranfield St., New Castle, passed away June 20, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Donna R. (Moulton) Michael

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Donna R. (Moulton) Michael, 51, formerly of Hampton, N.H., died Thursday, June 20, 2002 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, N.H.

She was born in Exeter, N.H., on Sept. 4, 1950, the daughter of Walter L. Moulton of Exeter and the late Sylvia H. (Brown) Moulton.

Mrs. Michael was raised in Epping, N.H., and was a graduate of Winnacunnet High School in Hampton. She had lived in Oklahoma City since 1993, moving there from South Dakota.

She was a devoted wife and grandmother.

Family members include her husband, Timothy J. Michael of Oklahoma City; one daughter, Christine M. Pitchford and her husband, Lee, of Alaska; five grandchildren; two brothers, Walter L. Moulton Jr. of Tehachapi, Calif., and Peter J. Moulton of Hampton; three sisters, Wanda L. Brower of North Smithfield, R.I., Sue Valiquet of Hampton, and Kimberly Moulton of Bedford, N.H.; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

MICHAEL - Donna R. (Moulton) Michael, 51, of Oklahoma City, Okla., died June 20, 2002. Services will be held at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, N.H., Monday at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home tonight from 6 to 8. Roland Roy

ELIOT, Maine - A Mass of Christian Burial was held on June 19, 2002 for Roland Roy of Eliot, who died on June 16, 2002 in Peabody, Mass. The Mass was held at St. Raphael Parish Church on Whipple Road in Kittery, and was officiated by the Rev. Real Nadeau.

The cross bearer for the service was Mr. Manuel Sousa. The congregation and church choir were led in song by church organist Mr. Alfred "Butch" Lapointe.

The service continued at Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth, N.H., where Father Nadeau offered a committal service. Representatives of The United States Navy presented Mrs. Roy with a United States burial flag in recognition of her husband’s unselfish service to his country. The Eliot American Legion Post No. 188 offered a rifle salute and "Taps" was played.

All were invited to a time of fellowship and refreshment following the services at the St. Raphael Parish fellowship hall. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Helen R. Macewich

RYE - Funeral services for Helen Rosalia Macewich were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, Saturday, with graveside services at the Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth. Rev. Agapit H. JeanJr., pastor, of St. James Church in Portsmouth officiated.

Bradley K. Barrett

PORTSMOUTH - Bradley K. Barrett, 36, of 567 State St., died Friday, June 21, 2002, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass., after a long illness.

Born in Brookline, Mass., on Oct. 19, 1965, he was the son of Joseph and Mary (Durno) Barrett and had been a resident of Portsmouth for the past 14 years.

He was employed at Ricci Supply Company before his illness.

He enjoyed fishing, reading, and trivia and was a "Trekkie" and diehard Patriots football fan.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sons, Justin and Joshua of Portsmouth; two brothers, Dana Barrett and Sean Barrett, both of Portsmouth; and a nephew, Jacob.

BARRETT - Bradley K. Barrett, 36, of Portsmouth, died June 21, 2002. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

Roland Roy

ELIOT, Maine - A Mass of Christian burial was held on June 19, 2002, for Roland Roy, who died on June 16, 2002, in Peabody, Mass.

He is survived by his wife of more than 56 years, Jeanne (Lavallee) Roy of Eliot; his daughter, Deborah Roy of East Providence, R.I.; and his five sons, Edward Roy of Rehoboth, Mass., Richard Roy of Eliot, Michael Roy of Taunton, Mass., David Roy of Eliot, and James Roy of Eliot.

The Mass was held at St. Raphael Parish Church on Whipple Road in Kittery and was officiated by the Rev. Real Nadeau. The cross bearer for the service was Manuel Sousa. Barbara Jordan Smith

YORK HARBOR, Maine - Barbara Jordan Smith, 79, of 2 Victoria Court, formerly of Orrington, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at Sentry Hill in York Harbor.

She was born on March 9, 1923, in Manchester, N.H.; she was a daughter of Charles and Grace (Jordan) Smith. She attended local schools and graduated from Auburn High School.

She furthered her education at Central Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in Lewiston, where she worked for more than 12 years; she continued her education at Boston University, graduating in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing, and in 1965 she received her master’s degree in nursing.

She was employed for many years as nursing director for the city of Bangor Health Department, retiring in 1979. She served as a member of the maternal and child health council and board member of the YWCA. She also served as director of health services for the Job Corps. She was a past member of the American Nurses Association.

She was a member of the East Orrington Congregational Church.

She is survived by her cousins, Richard O. Jordan of Brunswick, Mrs. Gilbert (Carol) Lutz of Eliot, Mrs. Donald (Jane) Hilty of Chillicothe, Ohio; and Mrs. Kelly (Mary Ann) Shannon of Santa Fe, N.M.

SMITH - Barbara J. Smith, 79, of Victoria Court in York Harbor, formerly of Orrington, died June 23, 2002, at Sentry Hill in York Harbor. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 27, 2002, at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Auburn at the graveside. The Rev. Robert Carlson will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to the East Orrington Congregational Church, R.F.D. 1, Box 619A, Orrington, ME 04474. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, ME 03904.

Francis E. Jacques

HAMPTON - Francis E. Jacques, 84, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born in Waterville, Maine, on March 13, 1918, the son of the late Leonard and Marie (Pepin) Jacques.

He was a graduate of Haverhill, (Mass.) High School and a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. After serving in the war he opened the Franro Furniture Store in Haverhill, Mass., with his late brother Roland.

He moved to Hampton Beach in 1952 and purchased the Springfield Hotel. Over the years he owned several businesses in the area including the Sand Motel, Cecile’s Gift Shop and several restaurants. He also owned Jacques Real Estate and built many homes and cottages on the Seacoast.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He enjoyed playing the organ and listening to classical music; he also owned and restored classic cars.

He was the husband of the late Cecile M. (LaChance) Jacques, who died in 1998, and was also predeceased by a son, Reginald Jacques, who died in 2001; a brother, Roland; and a sister, Lietta Wholley.

He leaves one daughter, Lorraine M. King and her husband, Robert, of Hampton; two grandchildren, Luke Murphy and Alison Murphy, both of Newmarket; and several nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

JACQUES - Francis E. Jacques, 84, of Hampton, died June 24, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton.
