Willard F. Bartlett

LEWISTON, Mass. - Mr. Willard F. Bartlett, 51, of 100 Elm St., Lewiston, died early Friday morning, May 24, at the d'Youville Pavilion Health Care Facility following a long illness.

He was born in Portsmouth, N.H., August 29, 1950, the son of John Thomas and Molly Catherine-Jean (Murphy) Bartlett. He was educated in Eliot schools and graduated from Marshwood High School in 1968. He was a 1972 graduate of the University of Maine at Orono recieving his bachelor's degree in secondary education and later went on to recieve his master's degree in 1987 from the University of Southern Maine. Following college he served four years in the Navy from 1972 to 1976.

Mr. Bartlett worked many years as an educator spending some years as a teacher in the Eliot school system and later spending more than 15 years as a teacher and guidance councelor at the Farwell and Pettingill schools in Lewiston.

He really enjoyed working with kids was very involved with the mentoring program of Big Brothers-Big Sisters and the Tobacco Free L-A Service Learning Projects with Children. He was also a member of the South Lewiston Baptist Church.

He leaves two brothers, John Bartlett and wife, Cheryl, and David Bartlett and wife, Christine, all of Eliot; two uncles Jack and Frank Murphy also of Eliot; three nephews Robert, Kevin and Albert Bartlett; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and a niece, Lisa A. Bartlett.

BARTLETT - Willard F. Bartlett of Lewiston, Maine, died May 24, 2002. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Fortin Group Funeral Home, Lewiston. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, at South Lewiston Baptist Church. A memorial service will also be held at 1 p.m., June 1 at the Eliot Baptist Church in Eliot, Maine. In lieu of flowers, contributions are preferred in his memory to the Pettingill and Farwell School Libraries in Lewiston or to the American Cancer Society, New England Div. Lottie Louise Pettee

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Lottie Louise (Robinson) Pettee, 89, of 76 Suzanne Drive, were held on Wednesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth. The Rev. Dawn A. Shippee, pastor of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Mrs. Pettee's son, Ronald W. Pettee.

In attendance were members of the church, including the Women's Club of the Church, and members of the Downeast Western Square Dance Club.

Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, in Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Shippee. Bearers were Will Hubert, Don Moore, Lew Nau, Vernon Searles, Michael Pettee and Donald Lane.

Mary E. Keefe

PORTSMOUTH - Mary E. "Molly" Keefe, 92, of 235 Maplewood Ave. passed away Saturday, May 25, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre.

Born in Portland, Maine, July 28, 1909, she was the daughter of Harry and Ellen (Connor) Shannon and had been a resident of Portsmouth for the past 70 years.

Molly and her husband, the late William "Bill" Keefe, operated Keefe's Market and later Keefe's Restaurant during the 1950s. She also served in the N.H. Legislature for a term. She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Eleanor Gratton of Portsmouth; her grandchildren, Larry Gratton and his wife, Deantha, of Texas, Joseph Gratton and his wife, Sue, of Portsmouth, and Willian Gratton and his wife, Patricia, of Greenland; great-grandchildren, Shannon and Lauren of Texas, Joseph and Sam of Portsmouth, and Krystina of Greenland; a great-great-grandchild, Cameron Dae Taylor; and one niece, Joanne Herrick of Port Richey, Fla.

She was predeceased by an infant son, Michael Dennis Keefe; a brother, Harry Shannon; and four sisters, Jeannette Frates, Helen Gingue, Ruth Herrick and Dora Shannon.

KEEFE - Mary "Molly" Keefe 92, of 235 Maplewood Ave., died May 25, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Catherine Church on Thursday at 10 a.m. Visiting hours at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Flowers are acceptable or memorials may be made to St. Catherine Church, 845 Woodbury Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801; or to the Edgewood Centre Recreation Fund, 928 South St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Esther M. Kucharski

EXETER - Esther M. Kucharski, 87, of 28 Sherwood Forest, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital after a period of declining health.

She was born March 31, 1915, in Exeter, the oldest daughter of the late Leo and Lena (Richard) Cote.

Esther was a lifelong Exeter resident and communicant of Saint Michael's Parish. She attended elementary schools and Robinson Female Seminary in Exeter. Previously she had been employed as a stitcher in the shoe shops of Exeter and Newmarket.

Esther was always an avid seamstress, preparing costumes for her daughters' many dance recitals. In later years, after decades of support and love offered, she became the focus of her family's love and attention, gathering frequently with her for birthdays, holidays, and just to share a meal. The mother of five, grandmother of seven and great-grandmother of five will continue to be loved, tenderly remembered and dearly missed.

During the '60s and '70s, after raising her family, she opened her home, helping several single mothers in town by providing day-care and baby-sitting services for their children.

For 52 years Mrs. Kucharski was the wife of Stafford E. Kucharski, who died in 1994.

Family members include two sons, the Rev. Steven M. Kucharski of Somersworth and Peter Kucharski of Hampton Falls; three daughters, Patrice D. Kucharski of Exeter, Bonnie A. Constantakos of Somersworth, and Susan M. Fitzpatrick of Billerica, Mass.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her brothers Frederick Cote and Albert Cote; and sisters Shirley (Cote) Kucharski and Evelyn (Cote) White.

KUCHARSKI - Esther M. Kucharski, 87, of 28 Sherwood Forest, Exeter, died May 25, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Saint Michael's Church on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter, on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in the Exeter Cemetery. If desired, donations may be made to the Rockingham Nursing Home, Residents Fund, 117 North Road, Brentwood, NH 03833.

Paul E. Bergeron

EXETER - Paul E. Bergeron, 83, of Exeter, died May 25, 2002 of natural causes in the company of his family.

Born Aug. 24, 1918, in Exeter, he was the son of Fred and Lumina Bergeron.

He was a graduate of Exeter High School, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard apprentice program, and the Army Air Corps cadet program. A retired USAF major and a former bomber pilot, Mr. Bergeron served as a career military officer in the Air Force. His flight service included the B-29, B-36 and B-47 programs. In addition to his military service he worked as a private pilot, and at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

He was a proud member of St. Michael's Church and the Knights of Columbus, and was an avid sailor.

Mr. Bergeron was predeceased by his wife, Cecile B. (Levesque) Bergeron, who died in November of 2000.

He is survived by nine children, Michael Bergeron of Wakefield, N.H., Robert Bergeron of Wakefield, Paul Bergeron of Candia, Suzanne Bergeron of Barrington, Mary Hervey of Nottingham, Janet Marchetti of Eliot, Maine, Diane Albine of Stratham, Tricia Gauron of Hampton, and Anne Sullivan of Exeter; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

BERGERON - Paul E. Bergeron, 83, of Exeter, N.H., died May 25, 2002. Calling hours will be held from 4-7 p.m., today, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, at St. Michael's Church. Burial will follow in the Exeter Cemetery with military honors. Flowers are acceptable and all are invited.

Mary Jane Thibault

EXETER - Mary Jane Sarah (Paquin) Thibault, 90, formerly of 12 Ridgecrest Drive, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood.

She was born May 8, 1912, in Manchester, a daughter of Ephrem and Exilda (Barron) Paquin. She was raised in Derry and married Nelson L. Thibault of Waterbury, Vt., on Feb. 19, 1944, and settled in Exeter in 1952.

She was a longtime employee of the Phillips Exeter Academy Grill and enjoyed the interaction with the students. She was active in many volunteer organizations, including helping with blood drives, Meals on Wheels, and bingo at Exeter Healthcare.

She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church in Exeter, and a member of the Catholic Women's Club. She enjoyed bowling, square dancing, bingo, crafts, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband in January 1969.

Survivors include one son and his wife, Nelson Thibault Jr. and Judith of Nottingham; four grandchildren, Therese and her husband, Guillaume Bonnet, of Exeter, Laura Thibault and her husband, Jamie McKinnon, of Thornton, N.H., Marjorie Thibault of Newmarket, and Jessica Thibault of San Diego, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, Alexander Bonnet and Emma Bonnet, both of Exeter; one brother, Raymond Paquin of Derry; and many nieces and nephews.

THIBAULT - Mary Jane Sarah (Paquin) Thibault, 90, formerly of 12 Ridgecrest Drive, Exeter, died May 24, 2002. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon on Wednesday at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Derry. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Londonderry. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Missionary Rosebushes of St. Therese, 700 Bridge St., Manchester, NH 03104.

Azalea L. Cutter

KITTERY POINT, Maine - Azalea L. Cutter, 83, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at York Hospital.

Born June 14, 1918, in Kittery Point, she was the daughter of the late Asa and Francelia (Emery) Boyer.

She attended Traip Academy and furthered her education at the University of Maine/Orono, where she graduated with a degree in English with the Class of 1938.

She married the Rev. Frank Cutter on Aug. 20, 1942, in Kittery Point. The Rev. Cutter passed away in 1995.

Together, she and her husband lived throughout Massachusetts, where he served as pastor in various churches.

She was also involved in many church activities. She loved to sing in the church choir, play organ, help serve at church suppers, and became friends with many of the parishioners in the various churches where her husband served.

She was a proud member of the Tri-Delta Sorority, Friends of Rice Library and was involved with the Eastern Star.

She enjoyed reading about history and the state of Maine. She was particularly fond of books written by Maine novelists.

Survivors include two loving sons, Dr. Bruce Cutter of Columbia, Mo., and the Rev. Dr. Alan Cutter of Duluth, Minn.; a sister, Marilyn Beyenberg and husband, Robert, of Norway, Maine; and she will always be remembered by her cherished grandchildren Ryan Cutter and his wife, Sarah; Jessica Cutter; Elizabeth Horr and her husband, Joshua; Catalin Cutter; Deborah Cutter; Timothy Cutter; and her beloved great-grandchild Isaac Orr.

She was predeceased by a brother, Hilbert "Bud" Boyer.

CUTTER - Azalea L. Cutter, 83, of Kittery Point, Maine, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at York Hospital. A celebration of her life will be held in July at the Kittery Point UCC Congregational Church at the convenience of family. Burial will take place at a later date in Thomas Parker Cemetery, Newbury, Mass. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bangor Theological Seminary Class of 1940 Scholarship Fund, 300 Union St., Bangor, ME 04401. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery.

Lawrence A. Gaffney

YORK, Maine - Lawrence A. Gaffney, 71, of Chases Pond Road, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth, N.H., after a lengthy period of illness.

Born March 30, 1931, in Davenport, Iowa, he was the son of Milton and Elizabeth (Artlip) Gaffney.

He grew up in Chicago and had formerly lived in the New Hampshire communities of Portsmouth, Rye and Wolfeboro, as well as Lynnfield, Mass. He had also lived in California, Michigan, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington.

For many years, he was vice president of marketing at Johnson & Johnson, and later became president of Ideal Tape Co. in Lowell, Mass.

In 1976, he started his own company, Action Manufacturing Co. in Rochester, N.H., retiring in 1995. He was also an owner and consultant for Safe-Strap Co., which manufactures child-safety straps found on grocery carts.

A communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church, he was also an avid fisherman.

He was the husband of the late Nancy Lee (Oleski) Gaffney, who died in January 1985.

Survivors include two sons, Lawrence "Larry" P. Gaffney of Rochester, N.H., and James P. Gaffney and his wife, Pauline, of York; one daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Nancy E.) Cantagallo of Mountainside, N.J.; one brother, Milton Gaffney of California; and eight grandchildren.

GAFFNEY - Lawrence A. Gaffney, formerly of York, died May 26, 2002, in Portsmouth, N.H. A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, May 31, at St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Interment in Central Cemetery, Rye, N.H. Visiting hours 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 122 State St., Augusta, ME 04330.

Robert H. Pope

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Robert Henry Pope, 66, died March 30, 2002, of respiratory failure

He was born in Lebanon, N.H., on June 7, 1935, and graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1953.

He was an electrician employed by NASSACO and was retired from the Navy.

He is survived by a daughter, Bridgette Pope of California; a son, Shaun Pope of California; a sister, Ann Pope Russ of California; two brothers, John Raymond Pope of Portsmouth, N.H., and Carl R. Pope of Knotts Island, N.C.; and three granddaughters.

His ashes will be returned to Portsmouth, N.H., in July by his sister.

Dorothy F. Covey

BRENTWOOD - Dorothy F. Covey, 82, of Lake Road, died May 27, 2002, at her home after a long illness.

She was born Sept. 4, 1919, in Houlton, Maine, the daughter of the late Edmund and Hattie (McAtee) Durant.

Formerly of Lowell, Mass., she had resided in Brentwood since 1970. She was educated and employed as an LPN at the Beverly Hospital. She was also employed as an LPN at the Danvers State Hospital, the Lynn Hospital and the Hale Hospital in Haverhill, Mass. She was an advocate and activist for animal rights.

She was predeceased by a son, James G. Covey, who died in 1974.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Emil B. Covey of Brentwood; one son, Peter Joseph Covey of Buffalo, N.Y.; one daughter, Mrs. David (Marianne) O'Leary of Brentwood.; eight grandchildren, including Sean P. O'Leary of Raymond, and James G. O'Leary of Somerville, Mass.; and five great-grandchildren.

COVEY - Dorothy F. Covey, 82, of Brentwood, died May 27, 2002. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 30, 2002, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2002, at Mary Mother of the Church in Newton. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Epping. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rockingham VNA & Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Roland A. Chaloux

WELLS, Maine - Roland Anthony Chaloux, 85, a resident of Old County Road, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at his residence following a long illness. He was born Feb. 17, 1917, in Adams, Mass., a son of Alphonse and Emela (LeBlanc) Chaloux, and attended schools in Massachusetts.

He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II.

He was self-employed for many years as owner/operator of a logging company and also worked for several years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church of Wells.

He was a lifetime member of the Lions Club of Wells and was a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, also of Wells.

He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and also enjoyed playing horseshoes, card games, hunting with his sons and bowling in bowling leagues in Sanford and at the former Glenmor Lanes in Kennebunk.

He was predeceased by his wife, Hermie (Barrows) Chaloux, who died in 2000; one brother; and four sisters.

He is survived by two sons, Norman and his wife, Carmen Chaloux, of Washington, Vt., and Daniel and his wife, Kelley Chaloux, of Moody; a daughter, Dolores King of Wells; a brother, Alcide Chaloux of Westminster, Vt.; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

CHALOUX - Roland Anthony Chaloux, 85, of Wells, Maine, died May 27, 2002. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2002, and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, with a Knights of Columbus service at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2002, in St. Mary's Church, Eldredge Road, Wells. Interment with military honors will be in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2208, Augusta, ME 04338, in Mr. Chaloux's memory.

Hazen C. Hayward

PORTSMOUTH - Hazen C. "Chuck" Hayward, 82, husband of Alyce M. (Hook) Hayward, of 19 Stark St., died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born in Baring, Maine, on May 23, 1920, the son of the late Henry Clay and Blanche (Howland) Hayward.

He graduated first in his class from the Marine City High School in Marine City, Mich., where he was class valedictorian and served as class president, graduating at the age of 17. He was a graduate of St. Steven's CA Business College in the Class of 1939.

In 1940, he went to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard until he entered the Navy in 1941.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II with the Seabees from 1941 to 1945, entering the Naval Reserve to total a combined service of 34 years in the Navy.

He played on the Bldg. 86 "HAS BEENS" in the Inter-Shop Softball League at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, winning the championship 1948-1955.

From 1950 to 1980 he was employed for the Internal Revenue Service, where he received the "Gallatan Award" for his outstanding work and later was employed as a public accountant in the Portsmouth area.

During his high school years he was a talented athlete, excelling in basketball, baseball and track, where he held the sprint record in the 100 yard dash for 30 years. He was also an all-state quarterback at the age of 16.

He was a member of St. John's Lodge No. 1 F.&A.M. of Portsmouth; Scottish Rite Bodies of Portsmouth and Dover; N.H. Consistory 32 degree of Nashua; Bektash Temple Shrine of Concord; member and past commander of Emerson Hovey Post #168 VFW of Portsmouth; and a member and past Exalted Ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 97 in Portsmouth. He served as Exalted Ruler in 1976; N.H. state president in 1983; District Deputy - N.H. South in 1984 and was a Past Grand Lodge Committeeman of Lodge Activities, where he served for many years.

Besides his wife of 57 years, survivors include his children, Terry Hayward of Michigan, Marilyn Landers of Milford, N.H., Nancy Dube of Simpsonville, S.C., and Clay Hayward of Portsmouth; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Clint Hayward of Calais, Maine, and John Hayward of North Carolina; five sisters, Patty Hayward of Calais, Maine, Jeri-Mae McCoy of California, Elaine Johnson of Meddy Bemps, Maine, Sara Cameron of Calais, Maine, and Ann Hacker of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; and many nieces and nephews.

A brother, Sam Hayward, and a sister, Corliss Keefe, predeceased him.

HAYWARD - Hazen C. "Chuck" Hayward, 82, of 19 Stark St., Portsmouth, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002. Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with Masonic services by St. John's Lodge No. 1 F & A.M. at 4:00 p.m., followed by VFW services by Emerson Hovey Post #168 at 4:15 p.m. and Elks service by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 97 at 6:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Elks National Foundation, c/o B.P.O.E. No. 97, P.O. Box 143, Portsmouth, NH 03801.
