Hope H. Wilkinson
PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. - Hope Hanna Rowe (Chaney) Wilkinson of 2832 Allison Ave. passed peacefully at home on May 7, 2002, with her daughters at her side.
Hope was born Aug. 25, 1914, at her grandparents' home, "The Hanna Homestead," Georgetown, Maine. She graduated from Morse High School, Bath, Maine, with the Class of 1932.
As a young woman, she worked summers on Maldon Island, Five Islands, Maine, with her sister Olive. During the winter, she worked as a dental hygienist in Bath. In 1936, Hope married her high school sweetheart, Vernal A. Chaney of Bath and moved to Kittery Point, Maine. She became active in OES Piscataqua Chapter No. 90, and was a life member of Sarah Orne Jewett, Chapter No. 176 in South Berwick, Maine.
Soon her daughters Linda and Susan were born. Hope became a member of the Eliot United Methodist Church along with the Ladies Fellowship and became a Girl Scout leader, working closely with her daughters.
Hope worked at the Maine National Bank in Kittery and, after her husband died in October 1958, she worked at J.J. Newberry's and Osco Drug Store as a bookkeeper. After being widowed for 17 years, she married a dear family friend, Henry Wilkinson. Together they enjoyed traveling with the members of the "John F. Hill Grange" and spent their winters in Deland, Fla.
Hope shared many cups of tea with her eight Eliot Club friends who met twice a month for 50-plus years. She never met a stranger and could light up a room with her sense of humor and quick wit. Her grandchildren loved her famous Congo Squares (you never knew what she would put in them) and the cookie jar filled to the brim. Her nieces Nancy and Sharon loved her stories and thoughtful gifts.
After the death of Henry in 1993, she moved to Panama City Beach to live with her daughter Sue. While there she participated in many activities at the Respite Center under the direction of Ida May Fleming.
Summers were a time for her to return to Five Islands and visit with family and friends, while sitting on the Gossip Bench at the Wharf and eating lobsters, watching the lobster boats. She was reminded of her youthful days when she and her sister rowed across to Southport and danced the night away.
Hope was predeceased by husbands Vernal A. Chaney in 1958 and Henry Wilkinson in 1993; and her mother, Mina Hanna Swift in 1969.
Hope will be missed by her daughters, family and friends. She is survived by Linda Chaney Johnson and husband Kenneth of York, Maine, and Susan Chaney Hester of Panama City Beach; her sister, Olive Smith, Cape Elizabeth, Maine; grandchildren who fondly called her "Nena," Susan Diane Davis and husband Milton of Virginia, Michael V. Greenlee of York, Maine, Sheri Greenlee Ramsdell of York, Julianna Greenlee Noyes and husband Michael of York, Terri Hester Gravis and husband Patrick of Panama City Beach, Jacinda Johnson Ellis and husband Shawn of Kittery, Maine; great-grandchildren, Christopher Robinson of Eliot, Maine, Christina, Edward and Shannon Prior, and Andrew and Crystal Noyes of York, and Desarae and Alana Ellis of Kittery; nieces, Sharon Murray and husband Gerry of Cape Elizabeth and Nancy Spear and husband Bill of Idaho; and several nieces and nephews.
