William J. Weibel Jr.

HENNIKER - William J. "Joe" Weibel Jr., 38, died suddenly at his home on April 22, 2002.

A former resident of Portsmouth, he was born April 24, 1963.

He was an avid outdoorsman and member of the Audubon Society, who once canoed the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, having flown in a prop plane with his brother, Bobby, to their starting point in Canada. He also enjoyed fishing, hiking and skiing. In his youth he was a competitive swimmer and a certified life guard and was awarded the highest honor in Boy Scouting, that of Eagle Scout. He spent much of his spare time drawing, painting and photographing the wildlife of New Hampshire.

Called the "Gentle Giant" by his neighbors and friends, he had a reputation for protecting those undergoing ridicule and harm. He cared deeply about children and was attentive and patient with them. He had a great sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. But his greatest gift was his faith - his faith in God, his faith in people and his faith that tomorrow would be a better day.

In addition to his parents, family members include his 5-year-old daughter, Jamie Nicole Weibel-Marsland; two sisters; three nephews; his paternal grandmother; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was a religious person who found solace and community in worship. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Sunday, April 28, 2002, at St. Patrick's Church in Jaffrey and was followed by an outdoor ceremony at the Cathedral of Pines, where the rain fell softly upon the more than 100 mourners huddled closely together under the gently dripping canopy of tall pines. His casket came to rest before the stone altar that framed the wilderness stretched beyond it. After the eulogy and final blessings, the sorrowful sound of a lone bagpiper rose through the afternoon mist. It echoed among the trees and drifted away toward Mount Monadnock in the distance, as Mr. Weibel was carried by his family to his final resting place.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Jamie Weibel Educational Fund, c/o Bank of New Hampshire, 28 Main St., Jaffrey, NH 03452, Attn: Tammy Griffin.
