Robert A. Trudell

SOMERSWORTH - Robert A. "Bob" Trudell, 51, beloved husband and father, of Grand Street, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born April 4, 1951, in Biddeford, Maine, he was a son of Arthur D. and Winifred M. (McFarland) Trudell.

He graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1970 and attended Plymouth State College. He married Kathryn "Kitti" Rodgers on Oct. 13, 1979, and had been a longtime resident of Somersworth. He was the proud father of two daughters, Kira and Sonia Trudell.

He was a member of Laborer's International Union, Local 976, and owned his own concrete construction company, "Two Strong Men."

He was well known in the area as founder of the annual "Shootout on the Hill" horseshoe tournament. He was known locally and nationally for his affability and love of large gatherings. He was affectionately called the "Mayor of Moat Mountain" by his climbing buddies who made the annual trek to the mountains.

His passion for sports was most keen when watching his daughters compete in volleyball. He also enjoyed following all national and local sports teams and enjoyed an occasional friendly wager.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Kathryn R. "Kitti" Trudell of Somersworth; his daughters, Kira R. Trudell and Sonia M. Trudell, both of Somersworth; and a brother, Richard Rodrigue of Rockport, Maine, and Millie Rodrigue of Augusta, Maine. He will be sadly missed by his mother-in-law; many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; his many nieces and nephews; and many many dear friends.

TRUDELL - Robert A. "Bob" Trudell, 51, of Somersworth, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002. Relatives and friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Martin's Church, West High Street. Friends are invited to attend. John Bisognani Sr.

SACO, Maine - Mr. John "Biso" Bisognani Sr., of North Street, and formerly of McDonough Street, Portsmouth, N.H., died Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at the Evergreen Manor Nursing Home.

Born in Portland, Aug. 23, 1922, a son of Enrico and Maria Belestra Bisognani, he attended Portsmouth schools.

He was employed by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for several years as a pipefitter, retiring in 1980.

He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed baseball, softball and bowling.

Survivors include three sons, John Bisognani Jr. of Saco, James Bisognani of Rochester, N.H., and Frank Bisognani of West Virginia; three brothers, Carlo Bisognani and Edmando Bisognani, both of Portsmouth, and Roger Bisognani of Las Vegas, Nev.; three sisters, Mrs. Jenny McKenna and Mrs. Vunda Collins, both of Portsmouth, and Alda Perron of Saco; one grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

BISOGNANI - Mr. John "Biso" Bisognani Sr., of North Street, Saco, Maine, formerly of McDonough Street, Portsmouth, died May 1, 2002. A memorial wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 6, followed by a memorial service at 8 p.m. at Cote Funeral Home at the corner of Beach and James streets, Saco. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, at a later date.

Jeane Sherwood Trefethen

PORTSMOUTH - Jeane Sherwood Trefethen, 79, died May 2, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth, after a long illness.

She was born in Rye on July 8, 1922, a daughter of Annie M. and Austin W. Trefethen. She was a retiree of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. She was a member of the Rye Over 55 Club; the Rivermouth Chapter #54, Order of the Eastern Star of Portsmouth; and a lifelong member of the Rye Congregational Church.

While living at Edgewood, she spent endless hours arranging flowers for the facility and devoted much of her time to helping others, and became known as the "Flower Lady." She was selected as the Adult Volunteer of the Year by the N.H. Health Care Assn. in November 1998 and was the recipient of the Points of Light Award presented in December 1998 to a volunteer who exemplified the best of giving.

She will be remembered as a loving person who spent her life

She is survived by a sister, Phyllis and her husband, Karl, of Rye; two brothers, Philip and his wife, Carol, of Dover, and Richard and his wife, Suzanne, of Billerica, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

TREFETHEN - Jeane Sherwood Trefethen, 79, of Portsmouth, died Thursday, May 2, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home, with Order of the Eastern Star services at 5:45 p.m. by Rivermouth Chapter #54. Flowers will be accepted, or donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Pauline P. Baillargeon

EXETER - The funeral for Pauline P. Baillargeon, 71, of 16 Tremont St., was held Thursday at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter. The Rev. John E. Denson Jr., rector of Christ Episcopal Church, Exeter, officiated. Burial followed in the Exeter Cemetery, with committal prayers by the Rev. Denson. Pallbearers were Joshua Sweetser, Nicole Sheridan, Tricia Sheridan, Jody Sweetser, Ryan Bell and Samantha Sweetser.

George E. Morgan

DENVER, Colo. - George Eldred Morgan, 81, a long-time resident of Kennebunkport, Maine, and a World War II Naval officer, died May 1, 2002, in a suburban Denver, Colo., hospital after a long illness.

A Chicago native, Morgan received a bachelor of science degree in journalism from Northwestern University in 1942. He then volunteered for military duty, and spent much of the war commanding a wooden-hulled submarine chaser in the Caribbean Sea, hunting for Nazi U-boats that plied the waters disrupting oil shipments from Venezuela.

He was discharged in 1946 as a lieutenant junior grade and was awarded the American Theater of Victory Medal.

After the war, he held a number of marketing and advertising positions in Chicago, New York, Memphis, Tenn., and Los Angeles. Early in his career he assisted in the production of the Captain Midnight radio program. In later years he worked as a free-lance writer.

He lived for 14 years in Pacific Palisades, Calif., moving in 1986 to Kennebunkport, Maine. He moved to Littleton, Colo., in June, 2000.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, the former Marcia Fisher of Littleton, Colo., and four children from a previous marriage: Geoffrey Morgan of San Antonio, Texas; Taylor Monroe of Lake Forest, Ill.; Elizabeth Tanner of Wilmette, Ill.; and Jon Morgan of Baltimore; two stepdaughters, Julie Love of Littleton, Colo., and Dr. Susan Bentley of Louisville, Ky.; 13 grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.

MORGAN - George Eldred Morgan, 81, a long-time resident of Kennebunkport, Maine, died May 1, 2002, in Denver, Colo. A service will be held Sunday, May 12 at 2 p.m. at Green Mountain Presbyterian Church, Lakewood, Colo. Memorial contributions may be made to CaP Cure, a prostate cancer research organization, at 1250 Fourth St., Suite 360, Santa Monica, Calif., 90401.

Joyce P. Shepard

ROCHESTER, N.H. - Joyce P. Shepard, 55, of 19 High St., died Thursday, May 2, 2002, after a very brief battle with acute myeloid leukemia.

Born May 24, 1947, in Rochester, N.H., she was the daughter of Phyllis (Cate) Menard and Henry J. Menard of Rochester, N.H. She graduated from Spaulding High School in Rochester in 1965, and the University of New Hampshire in 1969.

She was an elementary school teacher in Somersworth, N.H., for almost 30 years. She taught at the Chandler School and Great Falls. For the last 12 years, she taught first grade at the Maplewood School.

She loved to travel. She loved her home, her students, her many dear friends and, most especially, her family. She will be missed by all.

In addition to her husband of 33 years, Jed (James) Shepard, she is survived by her daughter, Jessie of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; her son, Christopher, and his finance, Michelle Cloutier of Newmarket, N.H.; her aunt, Edith Horn of Rochester, N.H.; cousins; and many dear friends.

SHEPARD - Joyce P. Shepard, 55, of 19 High St., Somersworth, N.H., died May 2, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2002, at the First Parish United Church of Christ, West High Street, Somersworth, N.H., with Rev. Mark Rideout officiating. Family and friends may call one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are under the direction of the R.M. Edgerly and Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester.

Anna L. Sherfesee

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Anna Latham Sherfesee, 87, of 346 Pleasant Street, were held Friday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church in Portsmouth. Fr. Edward J. Kelley, pastor, was celebrant. Words of remembrance were given by her son, Dr. John Sherfesee, Lt. Col., USAF, Ret. Readings were offered by grandchildren, Dr. Louis Sherfesee IV and Christine Elizabeth Sherfesee. Acolytes were Meaghan Dwyer, Ryan Gilbert, Meg Foley, and Richard Curry. In attendance were communicants of the Church and representatives from Mark H. Wentworth Home and Hospice.

Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, in Portsmouth, with committal services by Fr. Kelley.

Bearers were Cmdr. Louis Sherfesee III, USN, Ret., Dr. John Sherfesee, Lt. Col., USAF, Ret., Dr. Louis Sherfesee IV, David Michael Sherfesee, Gregory Hankin, and William Hett.

Barbara J. Somerset

BERWICK, Maine - Barbara Janet Somerset, 80, of 24 Sunrise Hill, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at York Hospital.

Born in Derby, Vt., on Nov. 16, 1921, the daughter of Edwin Victor and Mabel Louise (Carr) Jones, she has resided in Berwick since 1947.

She was predeceased by her husband, Oscar Somerset Sr., who died in 1976, and a granddaughter, Barbara Cooper.

She is survived by three daughters, Donna Gagne and her husband, Roland, of Sanford, Maine, Mary Gould and her husband, Peter, of Kittery, and Bonnie Schoff of Berwick; two sons and their spouses, Oscar Somerset Jr. and his wife, Norma, of Somersworth, N.H., and Ivan Davis and his wife, Sally, of Port Charlotte, Fla; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and a brother, Bruce Jones of Derby, Vt.

Maurice M. Murphy

PORTSMOUTH - Maurice M. Murphy, 70, of 64 Gates St., died Friday, May 3, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born Dec. 4, 1931, in Queens, N.Y., the son of the late Maurice and Edna (Martin) Murphy. He graduated from Brooklyn's Midwood High School and then from Villanova University in Pennsylvania.

After serving as a captain in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, he embarked on a distinguished 40-year career in computer systems technology with the Univac Division of Remington Rand; the Mitre Corp. at Lincoln Labs; Booz, Allen & Hamilton in New York City; and Systemation Inc. of Boston. He was later president of Information Management Corp., a computer systems analysis and design company in Portsmouth.

A resident of Greenland for 25 years, he was active in Seacoast environmental and conservation issues.

He is survived by his wife and partner of 38 years, Ruth Hession Murphy; a daughter, Jennifer Murphy Robison and her husband, David, of Charleston, Mass.; a son, Matthew M. Murphy of Portsmouth; a beloved German shepherd, Shadrach; and a brother-in-law, the Rev. James J. Hession of Framingham, Mass.

MURPHY - Maurice M. Murphy, 70, of 64 Gates St., Portsmouth, died May 3, 2002. Memorial visitation will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Guild at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, 333 Borthwick Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

James L. Streeter

PORTSMOUTH - Mr. James L. Streeter, 81, of 168 Highland St., died Friday, May 3, 2002, at his home, surrounded by loved ones.

Born on April 19, 1921, in Bennington, Vt., he was the son of Mary (Long) Streeter. He moved to Portsmouth shortly after his birth. He attended St. Patrick's School and graduated from Portsmouth Senior High in 1939. He furthered his education at the University of New Hampshire.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard starting as a messenger and finishing his 39 years in the design division. He was then a self-employed electrician for many years.

He was a loyal parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church. He was president of the Holy Name Society and was an usher for many years.

His favorite pastimes included swimming, cycling, walking, and going to Geno's Coffee Shop to sit at the "SMART" table with his friends.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Eleanor (Kelly) Streeter (formerly of Dover); his six children, Cathy, Eileen, Tony, Patty, Peggy and Nellie, and their spouses; and eight grandchildren, and was affectionately known as "BUMP."

STREETER - James L. Streeter, 81, of 168 Highland St., Portsmouth, died May 3, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Friends invited. Visiting hours will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 249 Canal St., Manchester, NH 03101; or the Immaculate Conception Church Bible Fund.

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Jeane Sherwood Trefethen, 79, of Portsmouth, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth on Saturday. The Rev. John Solie, pastor of the Rye Congregational Church, officiated. In attendance were members of the church and representatives from Edgewood Centre. Burial was in Central Cemetery, Rye, with committal services by the Rev. Solie.

Honorary bearers were Philip Trefethen, John Grunert and Karl Grunert.

Order of the Eastern Star services were held Friday evening at the funeral home by Rivermouth Chapter No. 54. Services were conducted by Matron, Frances Kendall, PM, WM; Patron, George N. Flanders, PP, WP; Chaplain, Ken D. Petruzzi, PP; Adah, Martha E. Petruzzi, PM; Ruth, Ellie Pereira; Esther, Roxy Hartman, PM; Martha, Margaret Gray; Electa, Edith L. Lovering, PM; Mary Ann Flanders, PM; and Barbara S. Pierce, PM.

Lillabel P. Cummings

ELIOT, Maine - Mrs. Lillabel P. (Pousland) Cummings, 84, a longtime resident of Eliot, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at the Harbor Home in York.

She was born April 19, 1918, in Gray, the daughter of the late Roy and Ada (Hammond) Pousland. She attended local schools, and was a graduate of Pennell Institute in 1936.

During her life, she was very active in many civic and fraternal organizations. She was very active in her children's school and church activities. She particularly enjoyed the Girl Scouts and the Order of the Rainbow for Girls. She was past mother adviser of the Portsmouth (N.H.) Assembly No. 2, and was involved a great deal in the local and state assemblies of Maine. She was a charter member of the Advisory Board, Lewiston Assembly No. 14-ORG, as well as a member of the Advisory Board, York Assembly No. 23-ORG.

She was a past matron with her husband for the Golden Sheaf Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in New Gloucester.

She loved her church and community, and was past president of the Ladies Circle of the Eliot Congregational Church. She loved the town of Eliot and the people in it. She was a past member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fire Department.

She worked many years as a gifted and talented floral designer at Flowers by Leslie in Portsmouth. She enjoyed traveling and gardening.

She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Irving Cummings of Eliot; two daughters, Laverne Burridge and her husband, Jack, of Eliot, and Gwendolyn Mason and her husband, Arthur, of Berwick; a son, John Cummings and his wife, Susan, of Melbourne, Australia; grandchildren, Michael and Sara Burridge of Eliot, Eric Cummings of Lowell, Mass., Kerry Bolonis of York, and Adam Mason of Champaign, Ill.; great-grandchildren, Mikayla and Jack Burridge of Eliot, Jeffrey Cummings of Portsmouth, and Patrick Bolonis of York; a sister, Marie Baker of California; a special niece, Tayna and her husband, Marc, of Denver, Colo.; and two nephews, Larry of San Diego, Calif., and Gary of Honolulu, Hawaii.

CUMMINGS - Lillabel P. Cummings, 84, of Eliot, Maine, died May 2, 2002, at the Harbor Home in York, Maine. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Eliot Congregational Church. The Rev. David Avery will conduct services. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine. Members of the Eastern Star will hold a service at 7 p.m. Monday. A graveside committal service will take place on Wednesday in Upper Gloucester Cemetery, New Gloucester, Maine. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Beautification Fund for Hammond Park, Eliot Town Office, 141 State Road, Eliot, ME 03903. Arrangements under the direction of Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home.

Carol C. Durgin

HOBE SOUND, Fla. - Carol Carlsen Durgin, 81, of Lakeside Village, died April 23, 2002, at Martin Memorial Hospital South.

The daughter of Ole G. and Anna C. Carlsen, she was born in Fish Creek, Door County, Wis. Raised and educated in the Chicago area, she joined the Navy WAVES in March 1943 and served as a control tower operator. After her discharge, she became a homemaker and mother. She was a former resident of St. Joseph and Maryville, Mo., and Concord and Portsmouth, N.H. She was employed in a number of positions, including several years as a travel agent. She was a longtime member of the international sorority Beta Sigma Phi. After moving to Florida in 1988, she became park secretary of Lakeside Village and was president of the local chapter of retired WAVES. Survivors include her brother George West of Seminole, Fla., daughters Sally Turner of Stuart, Fla., and Leslie Brock and husband Jim of Newington, N.H.; son Paul and his wife, Michelle Durgin of Oceanside, Calif.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

DURGIN - Carol Carlsen Durgin, 81, of Lakeside Village, Fla. and formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., died April 23, 2002. A memorial gathering will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, at the North Church Parish House, Spinney Road, Portsmouth, N.H. Donations may be made in her name to the John Durgin III Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1156, Portsmouth, NH 03802-1156.

Tracey L. Taylor

YORK, Maine - Tracey Leigh Taylor, 35, died suddenly on May 5, 2002, in York. She was born on Sept. 9, 1966, in Orange County, California. She had resided in the South Berwick and Eliot area since 1978.

She had many interests, among them a passion for travel and the outdoors. She was not only committed to her family and her two daughters, Grace and Hannah Waldron, but she dedicated much of her life to helping others in need. She devoted time to AIDS patients and worked at the York Hospital for many years. She most recently worked at Currents Bistro while attending college full-time at the University of Southern Maine, where she was pursuing a communications degree. She had a love for animals and also an interest in theatre, fine arts and photography. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Besides her two daughters, she leaves behind her parents, Tap and Judy Taylor of Eliot, Maine; oldest brother Tap Taylor and his wife, Mary Beth, and their children, Briana and Tapley, of Greenland, N.H.; her older brother Mark and his wife, Sheila, and their children, Samantha and Mark, of South Berwick; and her younger sister Rebecca Taylor of Los Angeles, Calif.

Her maternal grandmother and grandfather, Thelma and Waldo Finn; her aunt, Barbara Small; and paternal grandparents Tapley and Frances Taylor of Saddle River, N.J., predeceased her.

TAYLOR - Tracey L. Taylor, 35, of South Berwick, Maine, died suddenly on May 5, 2002, in York, Maine. Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2002, for a time of sharing and remembrance, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, there will be a fund at Kennebunk Savings Bank, 43 Dow Highway, P.O. Box 118, Eliot, ME 03903. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery, Maine.
