Paulette M. Gibely

SEABROOK, N.H. - Paulette M. Gibely, 54, of 13 Dixon Way, Seabrook, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at her residence.

She was born in Beverly, Mass., the daughter of the late Benjamin and Helen (Duest) Macharterre. Educated in the local schools, she held various jobs and worked most recently as the matron of the Beverly Police Department, retiring in 1990. She moved to Seabrook following her marriage to Aaron "Ron" Gibely whom she married Dec. 12, 1990. A loving mother and grandmother, she enjoyed time spent with her grandchildren babysitting and game playing. Primarily a homemaker, she loved camping, and motorcycling.

In addition to her husband Aaron, of Seabrook, she is survived by her daughter, Angela L. Tropiano of Lawrence, Mass.; her beloved grandchildren, Diamante Hernandez and Carmello Citron of Lawrence, Mass.; her brother, Benjamin Macharterre Jr. and his wife Patricia of Beverly, Mass.; her sister, Sandra (Mrs. Donald Nicholson) of Beverly, Mass.; four stepchildren, Leo and his wife Chris Gibely of Florida, Estelle (Mrs. Thomas) Dill of Lynn, Mass., Lynne (Mrs. Darren) Meuse of Beverly, and Roni-Jean Gibely and her husband Donald of Weston, Mass.

GIBELY - Paulette M. Gibely, 54, of 13 Dixon Way, Seabrook, N.H., died April 17, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday morning, at the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton. Visiting hours will be Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Family and friends are invited. Interment will be in the family lot at Central Cemetery, Beverly, Mass. Arrangements are by the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, NH 03842.

Edward M. Houck

NORTH HAMPTON, N.H. - The funeral for Edward M. Houck, 59, of 72 Atlantic Avenue was held Thursday, April 18, 2002, from the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter. Largely attended services were held at the Rye Congregational Church. The Rev. John Solie, pastor, and Rev. Robert Cole officiated. Mary Louise Arcidi was the soloist and Marjorie Scully was the organist. Words of remembrance were offered by Eric Rush, Bruce Schwoegler and Kathy Rush. A poem was read by Ann Ehlers. In attendance were many local realtors, contractors, and members of the Amherst Fire Department. Burial followed in the Little River Cemetery, North Hampton, with committal prayers by Rev. Solie and Rev. Cole. Full Military Honors were accorded to Mr. Houck by Carl Walton and Paul Cushing of Emerson Hovey Post - Veterans of Foreign Wars 168. Taps were sounded by Robert Bickford. The flag which draped the casket was folded and presented to his widow, Kathy Rush by YN2 Jessica Ferreira and RP3 Angela Bernstein of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Kathy then presented the flag to Mr. Houck's son, Edward M. Houck Jr. Pallbearers were Eddie Houck, John Mooney, Michael Jon Rush, Eric Rush, Bryan Swan and David Jacobson.

Mildred Tompkins

YORK, Maine - Mildred Tompkins, 63, formerly of Walker Avenue, Kittery, died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at York Harbor Health Care at Sentry Hill.

She was born in York, Aug. 28, 1938, the daughter of George and Myrtle (Parsons) Stacy. She graduated from Fryeburg Academy and attended Westbrook Junior College.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening. Mrs. Tompkins collected art prints and was a pen and ink artist.

She is survived by two sons, Carl Jr. and Daniel Tompkins, both of North Carolina; two grandchildren; many cousins; and one aunt.

TOMPKINS - Mildred Tompkins, formerly of Kittery, died April 17, 2002, in York, Maine. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2002, in the First Parish Cemetery, York. There are no visiting hours. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

SMITH - Thomas C. Smith, 79, of 91 Harriman Hill Road, Raymond, N.H. died April 19, 2002. A memorial services will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth, Tuesday at 2 P. p.m. Friends invited. Memorial visitation will be held at the funeral home, Monday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Family flowers only. PICHÉ - Oraville M. Piché, 87, of 5 North St., York, Maine and formerly of Kittery, Maine died February 28, 2002. A graveside service will be held in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery, Tuesday, April 23, 2002 at 11 a.m. There will be no visiting hours. Family flowers only. Thomas C. Smith

RAYMOND - Thomas C. Smith, 79, husband of May (Palm) Smith of 91 Harriman Hill Road, died Friday, April 19, 2002 at his home.

He was born in Toledo, Ohio, on June 28, 1922, the son of the late Charles and Grace (Murphy) Smith.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of Lawrence High School in Fairfield, Maine, and Thomas College in Waterville, Maine.

He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.

Mr. Smith was employed as a dispatcher for M.J. Morrissette, and prior to his retirement he was employed for 25 years for Ray the Mover in Newington.

He was very active with the Boy Scouts of America Troop 322 in Exeter. As a lover of the outdoors, Mr. Smith was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Beside his wife, May (Palm) Smith, survivors include his children, Thomas H. "Butch" Smith of York, Maine, Tammy J. Martel of Strafford, N.H., Carol A. Smith of Raymond, and Carl H. Shaw of Kittery, Maine; several grandchildren; a brother, Robert Smith of Vasselboro, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

Omie Watson

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Omie (Yarbrough) Watson, 89, of 188 Jones Ave., were held Saturday, April 20, 2002, from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, with graveside services in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Greenland.

Pastor Donald Gum of the Calvary Baptist Church, Portsmouth, officiated. Mrs. Watson's daughter Mensie Marie Byrnes read a poem.

Elizabeth Demetral

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth (Zacharias) "Betty" Demetral, 91, of 346 Pleasant St., were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Saturday. Father Angelo Pappas, presbyter, was celebrant. Kay Jarvis, Andy Bosen and Gus Zoulamis were ushers.

In attendance were members of the church and representatives from the Mark H. Wentworth Home.

Burial was in Sagamore Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Father Pappas.

Bearers were Paul S. Smith, Jason T. Smith, Colin M. Smith and Gerald Magneson.

Trisagion (prayer services) were held Friday evening at the funeral home by Father Pappas.

Elmer Leigh

RYE - Funeral services for Elmer Leigh Jr., DMD, 77, of 795 Washington Road, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home–Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Wednesday. The Rev. Dr. David Kerr, pastor of the Community United Methodist Church in Byfield, Mass., officiated.

Burial was in the River Bend Cemetery in Westerly, R.I., on Thursday, with committal services by the Rev. Melvin Bridge, pastor of the Grace Methodist Church in Westerly.

The American flag that draped the casket was folded and presented to Dr. Leigh's son, David J. Leigh.

James A. Faria

PORTSMOUTH - Largely attended memorial services for retired U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. James A. Faria, 60, of 421 Dennett St., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home–Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Friday. Father Agapit H. Jean Jr. officiated. In attendance were representatives from the United States Marine Reserves; United States Navy; United States Coast Guard, Portsmouth Harbor; New Hampshire State Police; Salem Fire and Rescue; and the Rockingham County Sheriff's Department.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Father Jean.

An honor guard was formed at the cemetery including, HMC William Walker, U.S. Navy Reserve; Chief Master Sergeant Mark S. Gilyard, U.S. Air Force; retired Gunnery Sgt. Sophie F. Bartosik, U.S. Marine Corps; retired Sgt. Maj. Edward C. Mitrook, U.S. Marine Corps; and retired HMCS Alfred Sculthorpe.

A volley was fired by a detachment from the United States Coast Guard Station, Portsmouth Harbor including, BMCS Mark Cutter, BM3 Russell Smith, SN Mike Hope, and SN Jason Hall, Taps was sounded and the American flag was folded by Gunnery Sgt. Hillaris and Cpl. Hammond of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and presented to Sgt. Maj. Faria's widow, Julie A. Roth-Faria, by Col. Gerard J. Boyle, U.S. Marine Corps.

John E. Cox

PORTSMOUTH - Memorial services for John E. Cox, 83, of 140 Court St., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home–Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Saturday. The Rev. Donald Gum, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church, officiated.

In attendance were representatives from the Feaster Apartments.

Burial was in Brooks Memorial cemetery, Eliot, Maine, with committal services by the Rev. Gum.

KUHN - The family of Joan E. Kuhn, 69, of Lady Lake, Fla., formerly of Portsmouth and of Great East Lake, Acton, Maine, invite all friends and family to attend a memorial Mass for her on Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at St. James Church, Route 1 south, Portsmouth, at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to: Hospice Foundation of Lake & Sumter Inc. 12300 Lane Park Road Tavares, FL 32778-9972.

Marion W. Yastek

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Marion W. (MacKenzie) Yastek, 84, of 52 Wibird St., died Friday, April 19, 2002, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Mrs. Yastek was born in Portsmouth July 31, 1917, the daughter of James and Pearl (Alvey) MacKenzie.

She was a lifetime resident of Portsmouth and attended the Portsmouth public schools. She was a member of the Emerson Hovey Post #168 Women's Auxiliary and served three times as president, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Cooties, and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose #444 of Portsmouth. She served as a Girl Scout Leader and was very active with the New Franklin Parent Teacher Association. She was a member of the Jollyettes Bowling League.

Mrs. Yastek was predeceased by her husband Peter Yastak Sr.

She is survived by two daughters, Judy Schallow and her husband, Bryann, of Portsmouth, and Nancy Foss and her husband, Richard, of Berwick, Maine; seven grandchildren, special grandson Peter Yastek III and his wife, Rochelle, of Dover, Brian Clark of Portsmouth, Timothy Foss of Berwick, Maine, Scot Shallow of Portsmouth, Cynthia Cheney of Hampton, Theresa Wiseman of Portsmouth, and Pamela Foss of Dover; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one sister, Florence Rufiante of Florida; a sister-in-law, Marguerite MacKenzie of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Peter Yastek Jr.

YASTEK - Mrs. Marion W. (MacKenzie) Yastek, 84, of 52 Wibird St., Portsmouth, N.H., died April 19, 2002. Funeral services will be at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Friends are invited. Visiting hours at the funeral home chapel from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, with Emerson Hovey Post #168 Women's Auxiliary services at 5:45 p.m.

Mary B. Delaney

PORTSMOUTH - Mary B. "Marion" (Young) Delaney, a former longtime resident of Wakefield, Mass, passed away at the Edgewood Centre Nursing Home in Portsmouth, Thursday, April 18. She was 97 years old.

Mrs. Delaney was predeceased by her husband, Alfred E. Delaney, who died in 1988.

In addition to her husband, she was also predeceased by her son, David R. Delaney, and her two sisters, Dorothy Young, and Mildred Sullivan.

She is survived by one grandson, Sean Delaney of Rochester; one granddaughter, Erin Walsh of Elizabethtown, Pa. and by two nephews, Daniel and Timothy Sullivan.

DELANEY - Mary B. Delaney, 97, of Portsmouth, formerly of Wakefield, Mass., died April 18, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, at the Forest Glade Cemetery, Lowell St., Wakefield. Arrangements by the Butler Funeral Home, Wakefield.

George W. Greene

KITTERY POINT, Maine - George William Greene, 66, of 2 Tower Road, husband of Barbara J. "Bobbie" (Clawges) Greene, died peacefully at his residence Sunday morning, April 21, 2002. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, NH 03842, in Tuesday's publication. Arrangements are by the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, NH 03842.

Linn A. King

NEW CASTLE, N.H. - Mr. Linn A. King, 88, of 11 Atkinson St., died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at his home.

He was born in Methuen, Mass., Dec. 20, 1913, the son of Frank and Irene (Brackett) King.

Mr. King was a graduate of Lowell Institute in Lowell, Mass. He was employed for more than 30 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the Pearl Harbor Shipyard in Hawaii, where he retired in 1972.

He was a longtime resident of New Castle, and summered at Ocean Point in Maine.

Mr. King was a life member of Naval Lodge #184 AF&AM of Kittery. He played with the Honolulu Symphony in Hawaii, the Portsmouth City Band, and many other local bands.

He was predeceased by his wife Mary (Little) King.

He is survived by three sons, John M. King of New Castle, Frank O. King of Sandown, N.H., and Dennis C. King of Kaneohe, Hawaii; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

KING - Linn A. King, 88, of 11 Atkinson St., New Castle, N.H., died April 20, 2002. Funeral services will be at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be at the funeral home chapel from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday.

James M. Succi

PORTSMOUTH - James "Jim" Michael Succi died from a sudden illness on April 15, 2002, at York Hospital. He was born in Portsmouth on June 29, 1946, to Madeline (Columbo) Succi and George Succi. He was a true native of Portsmouth and left town only once, for a tour of duty in the United States Army, serving in Germany as a German linguist for the ASA. He studied philosophy and psychology at the University of New Hampshire when he returned home in 1969.

In 1972 he opened the Pet Emporium and closed the doors 29 years later, in 2001. In addition to the many friends he left behind, his daughter Amber also survives him. His kind and thoughtful presence will be missed by many.

Joseph E. Augustine

WEEKI WATCH, Fla. - Joseph E. Augustine, 80, born in Pittsburgh, Pa., died Nov. 1, 2001, at the Marshall Manor Nursing Home in Marshall, Va., after a long illness.

He was a retiree of New York State Electric and Gas Corporation, where he was general manager of the Northeast area while residing in Plattsburgh, N.Y. He worked for NYSEG for 35 years, moving to Weeki Watch at the time of his retirement in 1984.

He held a B.S.E.E. degree from Carnegie Institute of Technology and studied at Cornell University and the University of Michigan. During his career, he served on the boards of the North Country Regional Board of National Commercial Bank and Trust Company, the Plattsburgh Rotary Club, the Plattsburgh Chamber of Commerce and the Clinton County Industrial Development Corporation. He was also a member of the Town of Au Sable Zoning Committee, the Town Planning Board, the Industrial Management Club, the NYSEG Speakers Club and various other organizations. He was also a 50-year member of the Masons.

He was a veteran of World War II service with the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by four children, Charles W. Osborn of West Winfield, N.Y., Joseph B. Augustine of Meriden, Conn., Bonnie L. Cline of Warrenton, Va., and Heidi S. Clark of Johnson City, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Louise Ryan, and two nieces, Beverly Hahn and Jeannie Venturella, all of the Pittsburgh, Pa., area.

He was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis J. Osborn Augustine, in 1990.

He was an avid golfer and bridge player and was a Life Master in bridge. He will be laid to rest in the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.

Paul K. Gerencer

GARDINER, Maine - Paul Kolman Gerencer, 39, died unexpectedly on Thursday, April 18, 2002, of heart failure. He was born in Waterville, Maine, on Oct. 23, 1962, and was a devoted and loving husband, father, son, brother and friend.

He attended Mount Merici Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Waterville High School in 1981. He received a degree in machine tool technology from Eastern Maine Technical College. He also attended Officer Candidate School and was a helicopter aviator.

He was a proud member of the 152nd Maintenance Company, where he held the rank of warrant officer and served in positions as acting platoon leader and unit maintenance technician. He had more than 18 years of combined service in the Maine Air and Army National Guard and received military awards for physical fitness, marksmanship and meritorious service in the Air Reserve forces. Since 1997, he had worked as the assistant plant engineer at TexTech Industries in North Monmouth, Maine.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed white-water kayaking, skiing, biking, hiking and hunting. He was a member of the Big Buck Club.

Survivors include his wife of seven years, Molly Comerford Gerencer (formerly of Kennebunkport); two daughters, Isabel Maria Gerencer, 5, and Emily Kate Gerencer, 21 months, of Gardiner; his parents, Dr. William and Jeanne Gerencer of Waterville; his sister, Kathleen Gerencer Mather and her husband, Ben, of Indianapolis, Ind.; three brothers, William Paul Gerencer and his wife, Paula, of Bowdoin, Timothy Francis Gerencer and his wife, Lori, of North Yarmouth, and Thomas Michael Gerencer of Waterville; four nieces; seven nephews; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brother, Mark Vincent Gerencer, in 1968.

A funeral Mass was held at St. Joseph's Parish, Lincoln Avenue, Gardiner, on Monday, April 22, 2002.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made for the education of Isabel and Emily Gerencer. Donations should be made payable to "Gardiner Savings Bank" and mailed to the Isabel and Emily Gerencer Education Fund, c/o Maine Office of Securities, 124 Northern Ave., Gardiner, ME 04345.

Richard Fransoso

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. - Richard Fransoso, 67, died April 13, 2002, at his home, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Dec. 31, 1934, in Portsmouth, N.H., son of Americo and Mary (Duke) Fransoso. He attended local schools and graduated from Portsmouth High School in the Class of 1952. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in February 1953 and served his country proudly during the Korean conflict. In July 1957 he entered the apprenticeship program at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as an apprentice electrician, graduating with honors in 1961. He became a foreman and general foreman in the early years of his career. In 1976 he was promoted to production superintendent, followed by group superintendent in 1978, and nuclear production manager in 1988.

He received numerous awards for outstanding achievements, including Nuclear Production Manager of the Year in 1987, as well as the Action 88 Excellence award in recognition of outstanding achievement in productivity that same year. In June 1989 he was awarded the Department of the Navy Superior Civilian Service award for 36 years of faithful government service. He continued his dedicated civil service career at the shipyard until his retirement in December 1989.

He was married to the former Arlene Renaud, and they had four children, Richard Fransoso of Portsmouth, N.H., Liza Martin of Boca Raton, Joseph Fransoso of Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island, and Gina Fortuna of Viera.

He is survived by his wife Nicole; his children and their spouses; grandchildren Katelyn Martin, Michael Fransoso, and Jessica Fransoso; a devoted brother, John Fransoso of Wollaston, Mass., and his spouse; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was surrounded by a loving family during his illness. A memorial service will be held in Portsmouth, N.H., at a later date.

Donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society and sent to: Mrs. Liza Martin, 10770 Maple Chase Drive, Boca Raton, FL 33498.
