Jesse R. Seeley Jr.
DOVER - Jesse Robert Seeley Jr., 57, of Varney Road, died unexpectedly April 12, 2002, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.
He was born May 2, 1944, in Jackson, Tenn., the son of Jesse and Virgie (Lee) Seeley of Chattanooga. He lived in Dover since 1997, having lived previously in Somersworth, Eliot, Maine, and Chattanooga, Tenn.
He was a technician at Tycom. From 1965 to 1974, he was a staff sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. Very proud to serve his country, Jesse had served in Cuba and Vietnam. He earned many awards, including the Meritorious Service Cross. He was extremely proud of his nephew having joined the Marines recently.
Known as a very kind and generous man, Jesse's family was the foremost important thing in his life. In his free time, Jesse enjoyed fishing.
In addition to his parents, survivors include his wife, Maryjane (Williams) Seeley of Dover; his daughters, Maryjane Bandach and her fiancé, Stan Jozen, of Somersworth, Tracey Harper and her fiancé, Bradley Coleman, of Springvale, Maine, and Aimee Jean Ricards and her husband, Donald F., of Rochester; brothers, James Larry Seeley of Knoxville, Tenn., and Philip Lee Seeley of Chattanooga; a sister, Sharon Finnell of Chattanooga; four grandchildren, Maryjane, Jeffrey, Michael and Juliette; and a great-grandson, Tristen.
SEELEY - Jesse Robert Seeley Jr., 57, of Varney Road, Dover, died April 12, 2002. Relatives and friends may call Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. Rose Mary LaMarca
Rose Mary (DeStefano) LaMarca of 92 Woodland Road, North Hampton, died Friday, April 12, 2002 in Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a quiet valiant battle with ovarian cancer.
Born July 18, 1913 to Fred and Victors (DiSanto) DeStefano, as the first of six children, she lived in what used to be the Italian "North End" of Portsmouth until her marriage. She wrote several articles capturing the essence of those days, which have been published in the Portsmouth Herald and included in Raymond Brighton's book, "They Came to Fish."
She was a member of the Seacoast Artists Association and used watercolors to express her love of beautiful seascapes and landscapes - her home is her gallery. There, visitors will also find evidence of her tremendous love for children in pictures and decorations.
She was a wonderful wife, a loving and protective mother and grandmother, a selfless sister and friend, a loyal Red Sox fan, and a woman with a very strong zest for life. In addition to her husband of 62 years, Louis J. LaMarca, she is survived by daughter Joan M. Henson (married to John) of Exeter; daughter Barbara M. Howard of Greenland; son Louis J. LaMarca II (married to Catherine) of Hampton Falls; brother J. Albert DeStefano of Portsmouth and sister Edith Geraci of Portsmouth.
She hated to leave her grandchildren behind: Mary Joan Henson Deutschbein of Rochester, N.Y.; Katrina Mary Henson Allen of Brentwood; Sara Mary Henson Pelling of England; Joan Mary Henson Marquis of Hampton; Rebecca Sue Howard Gelinas of Newmarket; Melanie Ann Howard Dame of Naples, Maine; Christopher John Howard of Daytona Beach, Fla.; Tasha Arlene LaMarca of Hampton Falls and Amber Lynn LaMarca of Hampton Falls.
She was happy that she lived long enough to enjoy her great-grandchildren: Maggie, Elsa, Jack, Oscar, Reed, Abby, Grace, Olivia and Gabrielle.
She touched everyone she met with warmth and grace, and always thought about the welfare of others first. Her all-embracing love benefited so many.
Janis Skinner Roux
VALDOSTA, Ga. - Janis Skinner Roux, 48, died suddenly at her home on Friday, April 12, 2002. Born in Dover, N.H., she had lived in this area since 1993. She had greatly enjoyed bowling with the Moody Markers Bowling Team and gardening in her yard. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Ronald B. Roux of Valdosta; two daughters, Karen J. Roux of Valdosta, and Renee D. Roux of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C.; a son, Michael D. Roux of Saginaw, Texas; two grandchildren, Brandon Roux and Logan Roux, both of Saginaw, Texas; her mother, Ethel N. Makosky of Portsmouth, N.H.; two brothers, Alan R. Skinner of Wake Forest, N.C., and Frank L. Skinner of Waycross; two sisters, Carole-Ann Powell and Melissa Gordon, both of Portsmouth, N.H.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
ROUX - Janis Skinner Roux, 48, of Valdosta, Ga., died April 12, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Carson McLane Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour before the service. Burial of the cremains will follow later in New Hampshire. Carson McLane Funeral Home is serving the Roux family.
Edward M. Houck
NORTH HAMPTON - Edward M. Houck, 59, of 72 Atlantic Ave., died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at his home.
He was born Aug. 16, 1942, in Greenwich, Conn., the son of the late Ted and Flora (Grant) Houck.
He was raised in Greenwich, Conn., and Amherst and was a graduate of Milford High School. He was also a graduate of Bryant Stratton College in Boston, Mass.
He was a Realtor and owned and operated Houck & Hall Realtors in Amherst. He was a volunteer firefighter for the Amherst Fire Department, serving as lieutenant and deputy chief. He moved to the Seacoast and started E.M. Houck Inc., a real estate development firm in Hampton.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Vietnam conflict.
He was a member of the Seacoast Big Brothers/Big Sisters board of directors for many years, a member of the national and state associations of Realtors for 35 years, a member of the Wentworth Marina, and served as chairman of the Amherst Historical Society. He was an avid skier and yachtsman.
Family member include his wife and best friend, Kathleen K. Rush of North Hampton; four sons, John A. Mooney of Heath, Mass., Edward M. Houck Jr. of Huntington, W.Va., and Michael J. Rush and Eric R. Rush, both of Portsmouth; two daughters, Lisa Houck of Mansfield, Mass., and Hillary Houck of Amherst; three grandchildren, Amanda Conn, Ellie Payne and Samatha Houck; one sister, Marcia Houck of Amherst; and several nieces and nephews.
HOUCK - Edward M. Houck, of 72 Atlantic Ave., North Hampton, died Sunday, April 14, 2002. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Rye Congregational Church, 580 Washington Road, Rye. John E. Cox
PORTSMOUTH - John E. Cox, 83, husband of Eleanor Pennell Hooper Cox, of 140 Court St., died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at his home. He was born in Weston, Nova Scotia, Canada, on Sept. 5, 1918, a son of William and Marion (Baker) Cox. He served in the Canadian Army during World War II and was a member of the Canadian Legion in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. He owned and operated the former John Cox Transport of Portsmouth.
Besides his wife, survivors include two sons, Gary Cox and Richard G. Andrews, both of Massachusetts; a daughter-in-law, Margaret Andrews of Lexington, Mass.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Spurgeon Cox of Alston, Mass., William Cox of Salisbury, Mass., and Edwin Cox of South Hampton, L.I., N.Y.; two sisters, Helen March of Seaward, Alaska, and Esther Schrempf of Salisbury, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Charles G. Andrews; three brothers, William Kelley, Arthur Cox, and Arnold Cox; and a sister, Irene Cox.
COX - John E. Cox, 83, of 140 Court St., Portsmouth, died Saturday, April 13, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at J. Anna C. Fisher
KITTERY, Maine - Anna C. Fisher, 82, of 145 Dennett Road, died at home surrounded by loved ones on Holy Name Sunday, April 14, 2002. She had been the quiet, reserved wife of Alzie Lee Fisher for more 55 years.
Born in Winchester, Va., on March 3, 1920, to the late Charles and Ida (Johnson) LeMarr, she was raised and educated in Providence, R.I. She had lived in Kittery for more than 40 years. She was predeceased by her sister, Charlotte G. (LeMarr) Britto, in 1998.
Besides her husband, she also leaves behind a devoted daughter and dedicated son-in-law, Celestyne (Fisher) and Eugene Bragg, also of Kittery; a son, Richard E. Fisher of New Jersey; and two grandsons, Lance L. Fisher of Dover, N.H., and Andre C. Bragg of Kittery.
FISHER - Anna C. Fisher, 82, of 145 Dennett Road, Kittery, Maine, died on April 14, 2002. She enjoyed her religion, family, privacy and home life immensely. Prior to her vision starting to fail, she took great pleasure in reading, cooking, knitting, needlepoint, puzzles and painting. She not only enjoyed the time she spent with her daughter Celeste, but immensely enjoyed the time she spent with her grandson Andre, and the many laughs and secrets they shared will be treasured by him forever. She was a very special part of both Lance's and Andre's lives, and they will miss her dearly, but she will always be in their hearts and minds because of the many things she taught them. Her guiding spirit will always be with Celestyne and Gene, today and forever. "You've gone on a journey which we cannot accompany you, but our Lord has promised that as our turns do come, when we get to that sacred horizon you will be there to greet us with that smile and laugh we shall all treasure until that time comes!" There will be no local services or visiting hours. It is the family's request that Anna's last wish be honored and all cards and flowers be omitted. Reba D. Sloan
KITTERY POINT, Maine - Reba D. Sloan, 87, of, 476 Haley Road, died April 13, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a long illness.
Born in Philadelphia, Pa., on April 17, 1914, she was a daughter of Thomas J. and Reba M. Rutter. She graduated from Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia and was preparing for her 70th class reunion.
While living in Pennsylvania she was employed by the Gimbel Brothers at Gimbel's Department store and at Cooperman's Drug Store. She also served as a Postmistress for the United States Postal Service. She enjoyed and supported the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Before moving to Maine year-round, she owned and operated "Antiques and Things" in Islesboro, Maine, where she and her husband owned a summer home. They moved to Maine full-time in 1967.
She led a very active life, as past president of the Garden Club Federation of Maine, past president of the Old York Garden Club and the Kittery (Harborside) Garden Club. She was a director of the Saco District Garden Clubs and served on the Nominating Committee of the National Council of States Federation of Garden Clubs and as a member of the Conservation Committee of National Council. She attended flower show schools and landscape design schools in Massachusetts and in Maine. She earned the title of flower show master judge and landscape design critic, and became a member of the Judges Council and Landscape Design Critics Council of Massachusetts and Maine. Her love of nature led her to organize a Conservation Committee for the town of Kittery.
Because of her interest in landscaping, she worked with citizens of York to preserve the wild grass meadow on Short Sands at York Beach and the planting of Rugosa roses at the Nubble.
She was a former member of the Kittery Point Chapter of Ikenobana Ikenoba and was honored to exhibit an Ikebana arrangement at the church of St. John the Divine in New York City. She attended several symposiums, exhibiting across the United States.
She was a member of the Rye, N.H., Art Study Group and with a friend organized tours to Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts and Maine to visit art museums that were showing the works of prominent artists. She was a student of Bonsai and a former member of the National Bonsai Association; she was an invited guest of the United States Department of Agriculture to attend and to view the Japanese Bonsai collection at the United States National Arboretum in our nation's capital. She was also a member of the board of the Wheeler Trust in York, Maine.
She is survived by her husband of over 60 years, Harry M. Sloan of Kittery Point; her daughter and husband, Ann and Armand Larochelle of Rochester, N.H.; her son and his wife, William M. and Ruth Muzzey of Kittery Point, Maine; two grandchildren, Laura Speth and Robert D. Muzzey; four stepgrandchildren, Armand J. Larochelle III, Lisa Steinmetz, Laurie Innocenzi and Bonnie Steinmetz; eight great-grandchildren; and her beloved pet poodles, Charlie and Buffy.

Charlotte I. Whittemore
NORTH HAMPTON - Charlotte I. Whittemore, 83, of 46 South Road, died Friday, April 11, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.
She was born in Somerville, Mass., on Nov. 13, 1918, a daughter of the late Alfred M. and Irene (Wall) Stockbridge.
She was a graduate of Wakefield, Mass., High School in the Class of 1937.
In her earlier years she worked as a secretary for American Mutual Life Insurance Co. in Wakefield, Mass., and later as a property manager at The Hotel Continental in Cambridge, Mass.
She had resided here since 1973, having moved from Cambridge, Mass. Her love for her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her great enjoyment.
She was predeceased by a brother, A. Merritt Stockbridge; and four sisters, Evelyn Stimson, Louise Cook, Elizabeth Chatterton and Viola Stockbridge.
She was the wife of William S. Whittemore for 61 years.
In addition to her husband, family members include one son, William S. Whittemore Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of Saratoga, Calif.; two daughters, Judith Lovering and her husband, Howard, of North Hampton, and Carol Montgomery of Waterville, Maine; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Scott R. Tackett
DOVER - Scott R. Tackett, 45, of 23 Henry Law Ave., died Monday, April 15, 2002, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a sudden illness.
Born in Portsmouth on Oct. 21, 1956, he was a son of Anne (Bizzocchi) Tackett and the late Roy Tackett. He attended Portsmouth schools and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School in the Class of 1974.
A talented artist, he had been employed for many years as a graphic designer with the Co-Ed Sportswear Company. In addition to his mother of Durham, survivors include his beloved companion, Kelly D'Amato, and her son, Timmy; two brothers, Bruce Tackett of Stratham and Jeff Tackett of Kittery Point, Maine; a sister, Shelley Hersey of Raymond; two aunts, Lena Riciputi and Maria Genesteti; and several nieces and nephews.

Warren J. Shaw
WELLS, Maine - Warren J. Shaw, 67, of North Berwick Road, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford, Mass.
Born in Lynn, Mass., on Sept. 14, 1934, he was the son of Gordon A. and Elizabeth (Donovan) Shaw.
He grew up in Lynn, graduating from Lynn Classical High School. Upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he saw duty on subMarines during the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam conflict. He served aboard the USS Darter. After service to his country he went to work for Brinks Security in Boston. In the 1980s he and his family moved to Wells. During the 1980s he was employed as a police officer for the town of Ogunquit during the summer months. He also enjoyed his affiliation with a number of fraternal organizations, including the Submarine Veterans, the Wells Elks lodge, and the Disabled American Veterans, of which he was a proud member of the honor guard.
Survivors include his wife, Cecile (Cloutier) Shaw of Wells; three daughters, Mrs. A. Scott (Ann) Mosher of Lyman; Mrs. Gareth (Deborah) Kidder of Sanford; and Mrs. Barbara Shaw and her husband, Michael Morisette of Portsmouth, N.H.; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Marion Hurley of Saugus, Mass., and Ruth Shaw of Bedford, Mass.

Melvin Bader
DURHAM - Melvin Bader, 75, also of Avon Park, Fla., died April 13, 2002.
Born Dec. 3, 1926, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was predeceased by his parents, David and Judith Bader.
He was a graduate of Long Island University and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He served for 23 years with the U.S. Public Health Service, retiring as a captain in 1977.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Snively-Bader; his son, Leigh Bader his wife, Diane, and daughter, Nikki, of Raynham, Mass.; his brother, Stanleigh Bader of Folkstone, England; his sister, Sheila Fleisig of Long Island, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.
It was his wish to be cremated, and his family will celebrate his life at a later date. They find it a privilege to have known and loved him during his lifetime and will miss him greatly.
Sgt. Maj. James A. Faria
PORTSMOUTH - Retired Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. James A. Faria, 60, husband of Julie A. Roth-Faria, of 421 Dennett St., died Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Mass.
He was born in Fall River, Mass., on Feb. 24, 1942, the son of the late James C. and Rose (Silva) Faria.
He attended St. Patrick's School in Portsmouth. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School in the Class of 1960 and received his degree in criminal justice from St. Anselm College and was the first commandant of the N.H. Police Standards and Training Academy formerly at Pease.
He served in the United States Marine Corps during Vietnam from 1960 to 1966 and retired from the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 2001 at the rank of sergeant major. At the time of his death he was employed as a court security officer for the Rochester District Court.
Besides his wife of 15 years, survivors include a daughter, Geana Seebald and her husband, Ed, of Orchard Park, N.Y.; two sons, Darren Faria of Dover and Chad Faria of Tucson, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Jessica and Justin Seebald of Orchard Park, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
A son, Tony Faria, and a sister, Ann Marie Novo, predeceased him.
FARIA - Retired Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. James A. Faria, 60, of 421 Dennett St., Portsmouth, died April Tuesday 16, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. A memorial visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted.
Sterling W. Crapser Sr.
PORTSMOUTH - Sterling W. Crapser Sr., 83, of 165 Colonial Drive, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at Langdon Place of Dover.
He was born in Rhinebeck, N.Y., on Jan. 1, 1919, a son of Sterling B. and Emma (Wheeler) Crapser, and had been a resident of Portsmouth for the past 31 years.
He made a career of serving his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps and the U.S. Air Force, completing tours of duty in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and later in the Korean and Vietnam wars.
During his time in Europe he received a Presidential Citation.
He retired in 1968 and worked as a civil contractor at Pease Air Force Base and in security for several Portsmouth companies. He was an active member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Elks Club.
He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing, and hunting and fondly loved Montana as his second home.
He was the devoted husband of Gladys (Abell) Crapser, who died in February of this year.
He is survived by his seven children, Sterling W. Crapser Jr., Debra Gagnon, Cynthia Kilkenny, Susan Latimer, Sandra Shipman, Janet Raslavicus, and Patricia Szmyt; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister; and three brothers.
CRAPSER - Sterling W. Crapser Sr., 83, of 165 Colonial Drive, died April 14, 2002. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. PAGE - Nettie M. Page, 90, of Kingston, died Jan. 10, 2002, after a lengthy illness. A native of Haverhill, Mass., she was born on July 22, 1911, the daughter of John and Mabel (Barnes) Mason. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2002, at the Exeter Cemetery, with the Rev. Wendell Irvine officiating.
