Martha K. Cournoyer
PORTSMOUTH - Martha K. (Erickson) Cournoyer, 92, of Portsmouth died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre. A complete obituary will appear later in the Portsmouth Herald. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home in Kittery, Maine.
Ronald L. Fernald
ELIOT, Maine - A memorial service for Ronald L. Fernald, who died March 27, 2002, in York, was held on Saturday from the Eliot United Methodist Church in Eliot, with the Rev. Ronald Messer officiating. The Rev. Messer opened the service with the call to worship and an invocation; Church organist Marilyn Messer led the congregation in some of Fernald's favorite hymns, including "How Great Thou Art," "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" and "Amazing Grace." The Rev. Messer then offered words of grace and the 121st Psalm and the Lord's Prayer, followed by a special reading of "Nature's Minstrels" by Ruby Phillipy, which brought to mind Fernald's love of the out-of-doors and his love of the birds in his yard. Special music was offered by gospel singer and Ron's brother Ken Fernald, who sang "In the Garden" and "Serenaded By Angels" in honor of his brother.
The Rev. Messer offered words of remembrance written by Vicki Lynn O'Connor, Ron's daughter, and words by his grand daughter, Kristen O'Connor. Mr. Fernald's brothers Richard and George also offered words of remembrance from their time spent growing up with their brother and the impact he had on their lives. The Rev. Messer closed with a homily titled "The Birdman of Eliot" and spoke of Mr. Fernald and his life. Friends and family gathered in the church parish hall following the service for a time of sharing and remembrance. Honorary pallbearers were Ralph Robinson, Bill Robinson, Fred Gifford, John Marston, Berton O'Connor and Rick Fernald.
Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
Robert M. Finch
HAMPTON - The funeral for Robert M. "Bo" Finch, 49, of 20 Harris Ave., who died March 30, 2002, was held Friday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, officiated. Words of remembrance were offered by Robert's wife, Isabele M. McCabe, as well as several friends. Cremation followed the service.
James S. Kennedy
AMESBURY, Mass. - James Sharp Kennedy, 61, also of Chino Valley, Ariz., died Friday, April 5, 2002, at Amesbury Village.
He was born Dec. 8, 1940, in Boston, Mass., the son of the late George and Margaret (Reid) Kennedy. Mr. Kennedy attended local schools and furthered his education by attending Colorado State University. He served his country honorably while serving in the United States Navy. Over the years he worked as a fisheries biologist with the state Fish and Game Department. He was also a self-employed woodworker who crafted beautiful clocks, furniture and other wood products. He was a wonderful, caring and loving husband and father.
Besides his wife Diane (Knapp), whom he married on Sept. 17, 1966, in Syracuse, N.Y., he is survived by his two cherished daughters, Peggy Kennedy-Thomason and Heather Kennedy. He was predeceased by a brother, John Kennedy, who died at birth.
KENNEDY - A celebration of life for James Sharp Kennedy, 61, of Chino Valley, Ariz., and Amesbury, Mass., who died Friday, April 5, 2002, in Amesbury, Mass., will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home.
Alice Macy Miller
PORTSMOUTH - Alice Macy Miller, 89, also of Freedom, died April 6, 2002. She was the daughter of Perle (Angell) and Burt Houghton Macy.
She was predeceased by her husband, Randolph A. Miller; and her brother, Burt A. Macy.
She was born March 11, 1913, in West Somerville, Mass. She was a graduate of Somerville High School and Vesper George School of Art in Boston. She resided most of her married life in Haverhill, Mass., where she was secretary at the Dr. Paul Nettle School for many years. She and her husband retired to Rye in 1974. During her retirement years, she became an accomplished artist, and her watercolor paintings are displayed worldwide. She was a member of the Seacoast Artists' Association.
Her happiest times were spent in Freedom, where she had summered since her childhood. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Freedom.
She will be deeply missed by her son, Peter M. Miller of Beverly, Mass.; her daughter and son-in-law, Christine and William Hurley of Rye; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
MILLER - Alice Macy Miller, 89, of Portsmouth and Freedom, died April 6, 2002. Relatives and friends are invited to the memorial service, which will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2002, at the First Christian Church of Freedom. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church of Freedom, Freedom, NH, or to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements have been made through the Cremation Society of New Hampshire.
Marion A. Mellin
EXETER - Marion A. Mellin, 88, of Hampton Road, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, after a brief illness. She was born April 23, 1913, in Nashua, daughter of Alfred and Clophee (Labreque) Hebert. She was raised in Nashua, the youngest of seven siblings, now all deceased.
She was employed for many years at Sprague Elec. Co. She was a communicant of St. Patrick's Parish, Nashua, and enjoyed sewing and painting. She was married April 3, 1944, to John R. Mellin, then in the U.S. Army at Fort Sill, Okla. She resided in Nashua for 55 years before moving to Exeter in 1999 to be close to family. Her husband now resides at Langdon Place of Exeter.
Besides her husband, survivors include one son, Douglas Mellin, and a grandson, Craig Mellin, both of Exeter; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on April 13, 2002, at St. Michael's Church.
Elizabeth M. Cronin
RYE - The funeral for Elizabeth M. Cronin, who died April 5, 2002, was held Monday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial was concelebrated at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. The Rev. Maurice Lavigne, pastor, and the Rev. Hugh O'Regan, a family friend from the Boston archdiocese, were the celebrants. Salvator DiVincenzo was the altar server. Judith Kish was organist and pianist, and Mary Louise Arcidi was cantor and soloist. Family members placed the pall over the casket. Her daughter, Tara C. Mickela, offered the first reading, and her son Charles F. Cronin offered the second reading. The Prayer of the Faithful was offered by grandson Matthew C. Cronin. The gifts were presented to the altar by her brother and sister, Vincent McCarthy and Ruth McCarthy. William J. Cronin Jr. recited a poem in his mother's memory. Burial followed in the Calvary Cemetery, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Lavigne and the Rev. O'Regan. Pallbearers were William J. Cronin Jr., Charles Cronin, Matthew Cronin, Thomas Cronin, Jerry Doyle and Peter Mickela. An honor guard was posted, both at the church and at the cemetery, by the mounted patrol of the Hampton Police Department.
Martha K. Cournoyer
PORTSMOUTH - Martha Katherine (Erickson) Cournoyer, 92, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.
She was born March 11, 1910, in Portsmouth, a daughter of the late Henry and Maude (Forrence) Erickson. She attended local schools and for many years worked in the housekeeping and dietary departments at the old Portsmouth Hospital. She also worked at the former Gold Craft Shoe Company and also the former Little Yankee Shoe Company, which were located in Portsmouth.
She was a former Pithian Sister and a former member of the Moose Lodge of Portsmouth.
In her leisure time, she loved making afghans. She made one for every member of her family. She was a wonderful housekeeper and took pride in her home and family.
In April of 1933 she married Earl Cournoyer in Kittery, Maine. Her husband died in 1970.
She is survived by a stepdaughter, Shirley Erickson of Portsmouth; and two stepgrandchildren, Thomas Erickson of Marietta, Ga., and Ellen Pongrance of Tulsa, Okla.
She was predeceased by six sisters and two brothers.
COURNOYER - Martha Cournoyer, 92, of Portsmouth, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 12, 2002, at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine. The Rev. George Wardwell, pastor of the Kittery Point Baptist Church, will conduct services. A graveside committal service and burial will follow in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Portsmouth Home Health and Hospice, 95 Albany St., Unit 11, Portsmouth, NH 03801, or to a charity of one's choice.
Wilbur A. Curling
CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Wilbur Arnold "Bill" Curling, 90, born in South Norfolk on Aug. 5, 1911, died April 1, 2002. He was predeceased by his first wife, Thelma Wilson Dailey, in l967, and by his wife June Rae Gurganus in 1999.
He graduated from South Norfolk High School in 1929 and was a lifelong member of the Chesapeake Avenue Methodist Church in South Norfolk.
He began his civil service career at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 1939. He was the financial manager of the Portsmouth Naval Hospital in the 1960s and retired as comptroller of the Norfolk Naval Station in 1972 after 33 years of government service.
He is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Gaitha and Mel Shannon of Ruskin, Fla., Alison and John Hart of Portsmouth, N.H., and Tracy and Ray Grandon of Chesapeake, as well as two grandsons, Graham Neal Clark and Zachary Collin Paul Clark of Chesapeake.
A funeral was held at Chesapeake Avenue Methodist Church on Thursday, April 4, 2002, with burial in Riverside Memorial Park in Chesapeake.
Mariolla T. Phyllides
LACONIA - Mrs. Mariolla Tekos Phyllides, 91, of 8 Boulder Lane, died at the Lakes Region General Hospital on Friday, April 5, 2002.
Mariolla Phyllides was born Aug. 15, 1910, in Korce, Albania, and immigrated to Manchester at the age of 10. She resided there until 1937, when she married Philip Phyllides. They made their home in Portsmouth until 1972 before moving to Echo Shores on Lake Winnipesaukee. In 1992, Mariolla and Philip moved to The Taylor Ledges where they lived together until her death.
Mrs. Phyllides was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was an enthusiastic gardener and a member of the Alton Garden Club.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Elaine Mavrikis, Joanne Phyllides and Susan Selkirk; her son-in-law, Rennie Selkirk; three grandchildren, Cheryl Hill and her husband, Terry Hill, Craig Mavrikis and Christopher Mavrikis; a great-grandson, Spencer T. Hill; her sister, Sue Carpinella; and several nephews and nieces.
PHYLLIDES - Mariolla Tekos Phyllides, 91, of 8 Boulder Lane, Laconia, died April 5, 2002. There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2002, at the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia, using the Carriage House entrance. The Rev. David N. Welch
CONCORD - David N. Welch, 28, died April 8, 2002, at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Mass., surrounded by family and friends after a long illness.
He was born April 11, 1973, in Exeter, son of Neal and Inez (Smith) Welch.
He grew up in Raymond, where he attended the local school system and graduated from Raymond High School, Class of 1991. He played both baseball and basketball for the school. He also graduated from the Stratham Technical College, Class of 1993, where he received a degree in drafting. He had been employed as a computer draftsman for Meggitt Avionics for the past five years. He was an avid fly fisherman and an accomplished fly tyer. He also enjoyed many outdoor activities, including golf, hiking, skiing and mountain-biking. He played in men's basketball and hockey leagues, and had a brown belt in karate. He had a deep appreciation for nature and a love for animals.
He was very devoted to his family and friends. His sense of humor and gentle nature were a gift to all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 11½ years, Melynie (West) Welch of Concord; his parents, Neal and Inez Welch of Raymond; one sister, Mrs. Randy (Alison) LaCasse of Raymond; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
WELCH - David N. Welch, 28, of Concord, died April 8, 2002. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, 2002, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, On the Common, in Raymond. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 12, 2002, at the Raymond Congregational Church, On the Common, Raymond. The Rev. Iverson will officiate. Burial will follow in the New Pine Grove Cemetery, Raymond. Dominick D. Ferrini
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Dominick D. Ferrini, 84, of 57 Mason Ave., were held Tuesday, April 2, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. James Church by the Rev. Agapit Jean. Altar servers were Richard Ward, Jane Millette, Theresa Hickey and Thomas Ahearn. Organist was Jean Goss and soloist was Janet Green.
Burial was in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery with Father Jean conducting the committal. Pallbearers were Thomas Ferrini, James Ferrini, Eric Tucker, Steve Ball, Michael Pesarisi and Manny Garganta.
The Portsmouth Lodge of Elks and the Sons of Italy conducted services at the funeral home on Monday evening.
Jean F. Fiandaca
STRATHAM - Jean F. Fiandaca, 72, of 82 High St., passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Exeter Hospital after a long period of failing health.
Born in Penacook, N.H., July 13, 1929, she was the daughter of Harold and Gladys (Carney) Dostie. She had been a resident of Portsmouth for most of her life.
Mrs. Fiandaca was retired from the Data General Co.
She was an avid Red Sox and Celtics fan and enjoyed playing bingo. She volunteered at the Portsmouth Pavillion with various support groups.
She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Fiandaca, who died in 1978.
Mrs. Fiandaca is survived by her children, Donna Smith of Stratham, with whom she resided, and Michael Smith, Sharon smith, and Robert Smith, all of Portsmouth; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Patricia Smith of Clinton, N.Y.; and three nephews.
She was predeceased by two sons and two grandchildren.
FIANDACA - Jean F. Fiandaca, 72, of 82 High St., Stratham, died April 9, 2002. A memorial funeral mass will be celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17, 2002. Friends may visit with the family at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the N.H. Robert A. DiMambro Sr.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Robert Anthony DiMambro Sr., 78, died March 29, 2002, in San Antonio.
He was born on Feb. 14, 1929, in Cassino, Italy.
He served with the U.S. Marine Corps, and retired from the U.S. Air Force and the civil service.
He was an active member of the community, involved with the Boy Scouts of America, Lions International, S.U.A.V.E., and numerous activities within his church, Mission San Jose.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Luigi and Teresa DiMambro; brothers Agostino and Marino; and grandson Ryan Briggs.
He is survived by his wife, Florence; his daughters, Lisa Schneider and husband Floyd, and Pamela Preece and husband Daniel Jr.; his sons, Robert DiMambro Jr. and wife Jean, and Brian DiMambro and wife Vicki; granddaughters Trisa Richard, Katherine DiMambro, Shana Furbaugh, and Jillian DiMambro; grandsons Christian Schneider and Andrew DiMambro; great-granddaughter Madeline Richard; sisters Genovetta Lambert and Mary Pulire; brothers Vincenzo and Rudolph; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
He touched many lives, was well-loved and will never be forgotten.

Elsie L. Conant
FALMOUTH, Maine - Elsie L. (Leighton) Conant, 95, formerly of Leighton Road, died Saturday, April 6, 2002, at Brentwood Nursing Home in Yarmouth.
Born in Falmouth on July 19, 1906, she was a daughter of Elmer J. and Margaret L. Leighton. She was a lifelong resident of Falmouth, living most of her adult years in the home built by her late husband.
She enjoyed knitting, sewing, crocheting and braiding rugs, but was best known for her beautiful handmade quilts, which she generously gave to the many special people in her life. A child at heart, she had an extensive collection of Disney's Goofy dolls, which she displayed in her home. She was also an avid sports fan and loved the music of Frank Sinatra. She was admired for her strong will, sense of humor, and her sweet and gentle ways. Her kind and youthful spirit were her signature.
She is survived by two daughters, Margaret Westfall of Pensacola, Fla., and Charlotte McLeod of Yarmouth; a son-in-law, Arthur McLeod; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many neighborhood children whom she loved as if they were her own.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles; a sister, Susan Severy; and two brothers, Arthur and Bill Leighton.
James S. Kennedy
KITTERY, Maine - A memorial service for James S. Kennedy, who died on April 5, 2002, was held Tuesday at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, Kittery. Words of remembrance were offered by Kenneth Toy and Heather Kennedy. Navy personnel from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard were in attendance to present the flag to James Kennedy's widow, Diane (Knapp) Kennedy.
Taps and additional music was played by bagpiper Steve Chamberlin. A time of sharing followed the service at the Redhook Brewery, Newington, N.H.
Muriel O'Leary
PLAINWELL, Mich. - Muriel O'Leary died April 9, 2002, at her home, under the loving care of her family, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born Muriel Lillian Kennedy on March 3, 1927, in Shingleton, she possessed style, grace and beauty that turned heads from Lake Doster to Washington, D.C. Her dedicated spirit made her a successful Allegan County commissioner, wife, mother, grandmother and registered nurse.
She graduated from St. Mary's School of Nursing at the University of Detroit in 1948. She then earned a second bachelor's degree in public health and psychology from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., in 1950.
She met her beloved husband of 51 years, Robert J. "Bob" O'Leary, while he was attending Michigan State University on a basketball and track scholarship. They were married July 1, 1950, in Portsmouth, N.H. In the 1950s she worked at the Frisbie Memorial Hospital, and her husband coached at Somersworth High School.
She was a respected registered nurse, who served the Borgess medical community and was a dedicated director of nurses at Pipp Community Hospital in Plainwell more than 14 years.
She served for 16 years on the Allegan County Commissioner's Court, was a founder and board member of Wings of Hope Hospice; Sylvia's Place, a safe house for battered women and children; and the Allegan County Crisis Services. Also, she was instrumental in the development of the new dementia/Alzheimer unit of the Medical Care Facility of Allegan County.
Her proudest accomplishments came in her service to the citizens of Allegan County since 1986. She believed that government should lend a helping hand to those in need and keep human services as its first priority.
Many organizations recognized her outstanding work. She received the Mary Ball Thomas Award in 1999 from the Michigan Foster and Adoptive Parent Association and was recognized in 1993 by the Private Industry Council for her outstanding commitment to community and youth. The Michigan Supreme Court recognized her service with the Foster Care Review Board Program in 2000.
As a Republican, her activities involved working on many political campaigns, including the Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush presidential elections.
She was active in the Michigan Association of Counties and served on its board of directors. She was active in the Red Cross and served as clinic supervisor at the Migrant and Rural Community Health Agency in Bangor.
She was active in St. Margaret's Catholic Church, serving in many leadership capacities.
Her family always came first. She delighted in attending the academic and athletic events of her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; three daughters, Colleen and Alex Mills of Wichita Falls, Texas, Maureen and Don Morin of Houghton, and Mary and Jim Knecht of Richland.; two sons, Dennis and Charmane O'Leary of Farmersville, Texas, and Kevin and Debbie O'Leary of Galesburg; seven grandchildren; a sister, Shelly and George Cassar of Sylvan Lake; two brothers, Roger White of Winter Spring, Fla., and George White of White Lake Township; a sister-in-law, Anna O'Leary; a brother-in-law and his wife, Joe and Cathy O' Leary; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins and extended family in Sault St. Marie.
Her father, George White, preceded her in death, and his wife, Necia White, survives. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Jim Cottelit, and a brother-in-law, Jack O'Leary.
O'LEARY - Muriel O'Leary, of Plainwell, Mich., died April 9, 2002. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home, Plainwell Chapel. The rosary will be recited Thursday. Family and friends will be able to share memories during a time of remembrance at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Donald Klingler at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Margaret's Church, Otsego, Mich. Interment will be in the family plot at the church cemetery.
