Raymond R. Binette
HAMPTON - Raymond R. Binette, 77, of 11 Warner Lane, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital. He was born in Exeter on Jan. 28, 1925, a son of the late Alfred and Aurore (Morrissette) Binette.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific as a private first class in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action on July 7, 1944, in the Marianas Islands.
He owned and operated a produce business at Hampton Beach for several years. He was also an automobile salesman for many years, working for many dealerships in the Seacoast area and in Newburyport, Mass.
He was a member and past commander of American Legion Post #32 of Exeter and a member of the Piscataqua Chapter #4 DAV of Newington.
Family members include his wife of 53 years, Barbara-Ellen (Walsh) Binette of Hampton; a son, John A. Binette and his wife, Joyce, of Hampton; four daughters, Susan Malizia and her husband, Michael, of Hampton, Mary-Ellen Ajemian and her companion, Lloyd Ring, of Hampton, Cynthia Scamman and her husband, Ralph, of Stratham, and Bridget Pollock and her husband, Timothy, of Portsmouth; 14 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a brother, Alfred "Sonny" Binette of Stratham; three sisters, Hermance Dupuis of Hampton, Jeanette Wilkinson of Plum Island, Mass., and Doris Gomes of San Diego, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
His brother Robert Binette predeceased him in 1985.
Geraldine P. Sheehan
HAMPTON - Geraldine "Gerry" P. Sheehan, RN, 77, of 761 Ocean Boulevard, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at her home after a period of failing health.
She was born in Methuen, Mass., on Feb. 13, 1925, the daughter of the late Walter J. and Florence E. (Harris) McGrail. She had resided in Hampton since 1972, having moved from Lawrence, Mass. She was a 1943 graduate of Lawrence High School and served many years on the class reunion committee.
During World War II, she joined the U.S. Army's Cadet Nurse Program, receiving her nursing degree with the February 1947 class of the Saint John's Hospital School of Nursing in Lowell, Mass. She worked at the Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington, Vt., and the Moline Public Hospital in Moline, Ill., the Hale Hospital in Haverhill, Mass., and the Lawrence General Hospital. After moving to Hampton, she was a volunteer at the Well Child Clinic in Seabrook and later worked for several years for the Seacoast Visiting Nurse Association. Since 1976 she had been part of a nurses' health study run by Harvard Medical School and the Brigham and Women's Hospital and was a recipient of a 20-year participation award. She was an avid golfer and formed the Thursday morning Women's Golf League at Rockingham Country Club. She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton and was a member of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, the Ladies Sodality and the Catholic Women's Club. For several years she coordinated the transportation needs for the Church's Outreach Program, and from 1990 to 2000 she and her husband ran the Saint Vincent de Paul Society Soup Kitchen on C Street.
Family members include her husband of 53 years, Raymond F. Sheehan, and two sons, Kevin M. Sheehan and Neil P. Sheehan, all of Hampton; five grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was a very caring person to many, especially as a mother and grandmother, and will be missed by all.

Muriel G. Smith
DOVER - Muriel G. Smith, 88, formerly of Durham Road, died March 31, 2002, at Langdon Place of Dover, where she had resided since 1999.
Born March 5, 1914, in Gardiner, Maine, she was the daughter of the Rev. Frederic French and Mabel (White) French. In 1963 she and her husband moved to Dover.
She was a secretary in the music department at the University of New Hampshire for several years.
She was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Kittery.
She enjoyed playing the organ and crocheting. She also volunteered many hours at Riverside Rest Home and the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.
The widow of Donald E. Smith, who died in 1988, she is survived by a son, Delmont R. Smith of Arundel, Maine; four grandchildren, Pamela Cardamone and Delmont R. Smith Jr., both of Hollis Center, Maine, and Cheryl Smith and Bruce A. Smith, both of Standish, Maine; and four great-grandchildren.
SMITH - Muriel G. Smith, 88, of Dover, died Sunday, March 31, 2002. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter Street, Newmarket, followed by an 8 p.m. funeral service at the funeral home. Burial will be private in the Hallowell Cemetery, Hallowell, Maine. Rather than flowers, should friends desire, memorials may be made to a local hospice group.
Fred J. Harclerode
NEWMARKET - Fred J. Harclerode, 79, of Exeter Road, died March 30, 2002, at his home.
Born Dec. 4, 1922, in Ebensburg, Pa., the son of John E. and Margey (Booth) Harclerode, he had lived in Newmarket for 54 years.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in the South Pacific.
He was employed as a custodian at the University of New Hampshire for 13 years and then worked in the Newmarket school system for many years before retiring in 1985. The school yearbook was dedicated to him in 1985. He also drove the bus for athletic games as well as for special-needs students. He was also a truant officer for many years. As custodian, he set up the school gym for many proms and school activities.
He was a life member of the Newmarket Fire Department.
He was a co-founder of the Tiger No. 1, Newmarket Handtub Association in 1954 and helped restore the Handtub for pumping competition. He was a past president and was foreman from 1965 to 1967. He had remained a very active member of the association, serving in many offices, and at the time of his death was vice president of the association. He helped to coordinate many handtub musters in Newmarket.
He was also a life member of the New England States Veterans Firemen's League and served as president in 1985. He had served on the Muster Committee and at the time of his death was a paper judge. Over the years he had piped many handtubs and had been a source of knowledge about handtubs. He had traveled throughout New England, New York and as far as Nebraska to attend handtub musters. He had collected handtub memorabilia for many years and had attended almost all of the league-sponsored musters. He was truly dedicated to working for the betterment of the league and handtub musters.
He was also a member of the North American Class C Handtub Association. He brought his Tiger Kitten to many Class C Competitions.
He was a 55-year member of the Robert G. Durgin American Legion Post #67 in Newmarket.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Betty (Batcheller) Harclerode of Newmarket; two sons, Jack Harclerode and his wife, Brenda, and Richard and his wife, Joanne, all of Newmarket; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
HARCLERODE - Fred J. Harclerode, 79, of Newmarket, died Saturday, March 30, 2002. Joseph S. Kelley
HAMPTON - Well attended funeral services for Joseph Sayward Kelley, of 15 Red Coat Lane, Hampton, and Port Charlotte, Fla., were held on Tuesday morning, March 26, 2002, from the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church by the Rev. John B. Mackenzie. The organist was Nelson Ward, and the soloist was Patricia Mackenson. The acolytes were George Brown and Edward Wakeen; the cross-bearer was Benjamin Arguin. The funeral pall was placed on Mr. Kelley's casket by his daughters, Florence E. DiSano, Maureen Irwin, Patricia C. Kelley, Barbara Jo Henderson, MerriAnn M. DeTeso, and Deidre P. Perrin. The crucifix was placed on the casket by his granddaughter Meghan DeTeso. The first reading was offered by his granddaughter Kelly Irwin, the second reading by his granddaughter Chelsea Perrin. The Eucharistic Gifts were presented by grandsons Devin Kelley and Peter Henderson III. Following communion, the eulogies were given by son-in-law John Irwin Jr., and the grandchildren's eulogy by Kathleen and Meghan DeTeso and Chelsea Perrin. Bagpiper Donald Matheson played "Danny Boy" at the funeral home, and continued to play at both the church and again at the cemetery.
In attendance were representatives from Portsmouth Regional Hospital, Anna Jacques Hospital, Phillips Exeter Academy, the Naval and Army Reserves, United Parcel Service, Entersay, Avnet, Walpole Fencing, the MBTA, a large delegation of faculty and staff from the Wilmington school system and the eighth-grade classmates of Meghan DeTeso from Sacred Heart School.
Burial followed in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth, with the Rev. Mackenzie conducting the committal prayers. The American flag was presented to Mr. Kelley's widow, Patricia (Dougherty) Kelley. Pallbearers were his sons-in-law, Angelo Disano, John Irwin, Martin Johnson, Peter Henderson Jr., Mark Deteso and Peter Perrin. A mercy meal followed the funeral services at the Ashworth Hotel in Hampton. Arrangements were by the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, 24 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton.
Anthony M. Lorusso
PORTSMOUTH - Anthony M. Lorusso, 61, of 401 State St., died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass., after a long battle with cancer.
Born Sept. 28, 1940, in Norwood, Mass., he was the son of Rita (Robinson) Lorusso and the late Anthony D. Lorusso. He attended St. Catherine School and graduated from Norwood High School with the Class of 1958 and Boston College in 1962. He continued his studies at Bridgewater State and Earlham College. He earned a National Science Foundation grant in 1966. He earned his Juris Doctor degree at Suffolk University in 1967. During the 1960s he taught chemistry at East Bridgewater High and Boston English High.
He was an international patent attorney and began his law career at American Optical Corporation in 1967. He then joined the firm of Lane, Aitken, Dunner & Ziens in Washington, D.C. In 1972 he returned to Massachusetts to join the firm of Kenway & Jenny in Boston. In 1984 he established the firm of Lorusso & Loud, with offices in Boston and Washington, D.C. An office in Portsmouth was opened in 1994, and in 2000 a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., office was opened. The four offices specialize in patents, trademarks, copyrights and unfair competition, business litigation and licensing. He was admitted to the Mass. bar, the District of Columbia bar, the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court. He was a member of F.I.C.P.I. In 1985 he was invited by the Chinese government to lecture on the U.S. patent system. He subsequently sponsored an agent from the Chinese patent office and an associate from Austria at the Boston office.
He was a member of the Portsmouth Republican City Committee and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and was a communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception. He was an ice hockey coach, Boy Scout leader, avid skier, gardener and gourmet cook.
In addition to his mother of Portsmouth, survivors include his beloved wife, Sandra (Lans) Lorusso of Portsmouth; two sons, Michael Anthony Lorusso and Peter Andrew Lorusso, both of Washington, D.C.; and a sister, Suzanne Lorusso of San Francisco, Calif.
Buff Durr
HAMPTON - Buff Durr, of 951 Ocean Boulevard, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, in New Jersey at the home of her daughter after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Lawrence, Mass., the daughter of Emma (Jackson) Trees of Exeter and the late Henry J. Trees. She had resided in Hampton since 1977, having moved from Westfield, N.J. She also spent many winters in Florida.
She was a 1940 graduate of Lawrence High School and a 1944 graduate of Simmons College in Boston. She received her Master of Science degree in hospital dietetics from Ohio State University in 1946 and was a registered dietitian with the American Dietetic Association.
She worked as a therapeutic dietitian at St. Luke's Hospital in New York City and at Mulenberg Hospital and Elizabeth General Hospital in New Jersey. She was head dietician at the Hospital Center at Orange in New Jersey. From 1966 to 1974 she taught home economics at Columbia High School in Maplewood, N.J., at which time she was a consulting dietitian at Westfield Convalescent Center and the Geriatric Hospital in Bellville, N.J.
She was the widow of William A. Durr, who died in 1971.
In addition to her mother, family members include a son, William A. Durr of Basking Ridge, N.J.; a daughter Susan Durr-Brenan of Westfield, N.J.; five grandchildren, Jason M. Durr, Megan A. Brenan, Christopher M. Durr, Carrie M. Durr, and Morgan H. Durr; and a great-grandson, Jason Michael Durr Jr. Her dear friend Raymond Lawrence of Dunnellon, Fla., also survives her.

Merle Cook
PORTSMOUTH - Merle Cook, 76, of 245 Middle St., died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Sunbridge Nursing Home.
Born in Lowell, Mass., on Feb. 5, 1926, she was a daughter of Henry and Agnes (Osterman) Turcotte. She was a resident of Baltimore, Md., and Wisconsin before moving to Portsmouth 10 years ago.
The widow of James Cook, she is survived by a sister, Mona Strom of Phelps, Wisc.; cousins Joan Nickerson of Ashland, Mass., Carol Saylor of Enfield, Conn., Eleanor Caddell and Warren Osterman, both of Tewksbury, Mass., and Elrine Thomas of North Carolina; and her dear friends Margaret Pomper and Eileen Bradley, both of Portsmouth.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Arthur S. Corey
NORTH HAMPTON - Arthur S. Corey, 86, of 203 Lafayette Road, died Sunday, March 31, 2002, at his home.
He was born Feb. 24, 1916, in Worcester, Mass., a son of the late Milan B. and Clara (Cranston) Corey. He lived in Worcester, Mass., for many years and was a graduate of Commerce High School. He had resided in North Hampton since 1969.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Marine Corps. He worked as a quality-control specialist for General Electric in Ashland, Mass., for more than 25 years.
He was a communicant of St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach, and was a life member of the Piscataqua Chapter #4, Disabled American Veterans, of Newington.
Family members include three brothers, Stephen B. Corey of Millbury, Mass., Raymond Boucher of Worcester, Mass., and Clarence J. Corey of North Hampton; and many nieces and nephews.
COREY - Arthur S. Corey of 203 Lafayette Road, North Hampton, died Sunday, March 31, 2002. David T. Eaton
VAIL, Colo. - David T. Eaton, 29, of Riverside Court, formerly of Seabrook, N.H., died Saturday, March 30, 2002 in Vail.
He was born in Exeter, N.H., on Aug. 8, 1972. He attended Seabrook schools, was a graduate of Winnacunnet High School with the Class of 1990 and was working toward receiving his teaching degree.
He had been working in Vail for the past several years as a part-time math instructor in elementary education and also as a seasonal snowboard instructor. His hobbies included snowboarding, snowmobiling, skiing, mountain biking, rock climbing and kayaking, and he loved to travel.
Family members include his father, Thomas H. Eaton and his wife, Gail, of Seabrook, N.H.; his mother, Karen M. (Peterson) Eaton of North Hampton, N.H.; two sisters, Sandra C. Brown of Seabrook, N.H., and Julie A. Clark of Hampstead, N.H.; one stepsister, Jenny Lynn Locke of Seabrook, N.H.; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Robert C. Eaton, who died in 1996.
EATON - David T. Eaton, 29, of Vail, Colo., formerly of Seabrook, died Saturday, March 30, 2002. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the Rand Memorial Church, South Main Street, Seabrook. John T. Griffin
YORK, Maine - John Thomas Griffin, 69, of Dock Road, died Sunday, March 31, 2001, at York Hospital.
He was born Oct. 20, 1932, in Wellesley, Mass., son of John T. and Rose Elizabeth (Johnson) Griffin. He was a graduate of Wellesley High School.
He served in the Air Force during the Korean conflict. He had worked as quality-control engineer for a high-tech computer manufacturing company for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Betty (Bond) Griffin of York, Maine; two daughters, Susan Anne Hauk of Groton, Mass., and Diane Louise McGraw of Middletown, Del.; one brother, Robert J. Griffin of Natick, Mass.; and two grandchildren, Benjamin J. and Alexander G. Hauk, both of Groton, Mass.

Harold M. Smith Jr.
AUGUSTA, Maine - Harold M. Smith Jr., 68, formerly of Holly Hills, Fla., and York, Maine, died March 31, 2002, at Togas Veterans Hospital in Augusta, Maine. Born Nov. 7, 1933, in Houlton, Maine, he was the son of the late Harold M. Smith Sr. and Anna (Lloyd) Smith White. He attended Houlton High School and in 1951 joined the United States Marine Corps. After retiring from the Marine Corps in 1965, at the rank of sergeant, he spent many years driving trucks for various gravel trucking companies located from Texas to Maine. After moving back to Maine in 1973, he spent many years working for Bartley Builders in Houlton, Maine. After moving to York, Maine, he worked for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, from which he retired in 1993. Upon his retirement, he moved to Holly Hills, Fla.
Survivors include five daughters, Tanya Crocker of Boise, Idaho, Devon Bergeron of Portsmouth, N.H., Stephanie Chase of Kennebunk, Maine, Melissa Boone of Woodstock, New Brunswick, Canada, and Jennifer Ireland of Houlton, Maine; two sisters, Betty Cummings of Houlton, Maine, and Sherry Cates of Oakland, Maine; 10 grandchildren, Danielle and Dawn Bergeron, both of Portsmouth, N.H., Christopher and Amanda Vose, both of Kennebunk, Maine, Betty Crocker of Boise, Idaho, Mitchell Lord and Eileen Boone of Woodstock, New Brunswick, and Adrian, Benjamin and Nicholas Ireland of Houlton, Maine; one great-grandchild, Railynn Bean of Portsmouth, N.H.; and his former wife and special love, Patricia Smith of Houlton, Maine.
Charles H. Oxford
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Charles H. Oxford, 91, of 144 Oxford Ave., were held from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, with graveside services in Sagamore Cemetery, Portsmouth. The Rev. William T. Richards Jr., pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Portsmouth, officiated. David Hayes and Susan Hayes Easterday sang "Amazing Grace."
Robert R. Beaulieu
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Robert Roland Beaulieu, 74, of St. Augustine, died Friday, March 29, 2002.
He was born in Hartford, Conn., and lived in Lewiston, Maine, for many years.
He graduated from Lewiston High School and attended Bates College. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force for three years. He attended Wentworth Institute in Boston, Mass., and graduated from Northeastern Lincoln Institute, Boston. He retired from IBM as a programmer after 38 years of service. During his career, he lived in Portsmouth, N.H., Simsbury, Conn., and Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
He was a member of the St. Augustine Elks Lodge and the American Legion of Connecticut.
In addition to his wife of more than 50 years, Thelma (Beaulieu) of St. Augustine, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Robert Jr. and Jennifer of Chesterfield, Mo.; four daughters, Jacqueline (Raymond) Roux of Windham, Maine, Janet (Piet) Seveke of Kaarst, Germany, Julie Hayes of Greenland, N.H., and Joanne (Peter) Bielawski of Staatsburg, N.Y.; one brother and sister-in-law, Julian and Lorraine Beaulieu of St. Augustine; one sister, Madeleine Beaulieu of Lewiston, Maine; seven grandchildren; and many dear friends.
He was predeceased by a brother, Leon; a granddaughter, Alison Hayes; and a son-in-law, Christopher Hayes.
Memorial services are today at St. Anastasia Roman Catholic Church. Cathleen M. Wallace
YORK, Maine - Cathleen Meloon Wallace, 97, widow of Retired Navy Capt. Henry K. Wallace, also of Jackson, N.H., and formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, in York.
She was born in Kittery on Aug. 17, 1904, the daughter of the late Willis Grant Meloon and Mary Lida Dodge Meloon of Portsmouth, N.H.
She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and Lasell Junior College.
She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth.
She is survived by a daughter, Joan Wallace Billings of Jackson, N.H.; two granddaughters, Loren Cordelia Billings of Jackson, N.H., and Liane Kuniholm of Portland; and two great-grandsons of Portland.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
