Charles F. Rowell Jr.
NORTH HAMPTON - Charles Fremont Rowell Jr., 75, of 152 Post Road, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Rockingham County Nursing Home.
Born in Newburyport, Mass., Dec. 30, 1926, he was the son of Charles and Harriet (Lake) Rowell and was a longtime resident of the area. He was a graduate of Newburyport High School with the Class of 1944.
He was a supply sergeant in the Army during World War II. He later worked as a self-employed lumber dealer, turning that business into Chuckies Flea Market. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and the American Legion.
He was the husband for 45 years of Theresa Rowell.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Jeffery David Rowell and his wife, Cheryl, of Fremont, and David Charles Rowell and his wife, Kathleen, of Eliot, Maine; three daughters, Victoria and her husband, William Haley, of Exeter, Diane Theresa Rowell of North Hampton, and Pamela Stickney, his daughter from a previous marriage; one brother, Roger Rowell of Newburyport, Mass.; and five grandchildren, Sean, Kelly, Jackson, Olivia and Amelia.
ROWELL— Charles Fremont Rowell Jr., 75, of 152 Post Road, North Hampton, passed away Feb. 28, 2002. A funeral service will be held Monday, March 4, at 11 a.m. at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Charles A. Glenday
NASHUA - Charles A. Glenday, 76, of 22 Hunt St., died early Thursday morning, Feb. 28, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua, following a brief illness.
Mr. Glenday was born in Winchendon, Mass., on March 2, 1925, son of the late Austin and Catherine (Dunn) Glenday. He resided in Troy, N.H., during his youth and came to Nashua in 1957, residing first on Broad Street and later on Cabot Drive. In 1984, Mr. Glenday moved to North Hampton and then lived in Stratham from 1993 to 1995 when he returned to Nashua.
Mr. Glenday began his career in 1950 as a science teacher, when Alvirne High School opened in Hudson, N.H. He was promoted to assistant principal and served from 1951 to 1953. He was principal of the Webster School in 1953-54, and principal of Alvirne High School from 1954 to 1955.
He then joined Sanders Associates and held several senior management positions, including corporate manager of administrative services and assistant to the president. In 1977, Mr. Glenday was appointed corporate manager of public affairs, and in 1980 was named corporate vice president of Public Affairs. He retired from Sanders in March 1987.
Very active in civic affairs, Mr. Glenday served as president and chairman of the Southern New Hampshire Association of Commerce and Industry of Nashua; was president of the Nashua Chamber of Commerce in 1969; served on the board of directors of the Nashua Chamber of Commerce from 1968 to 1971, and then was chairman for three terms from 1981 to 1986. Mr. Glenday was chairman of the Nashua Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner in 1973 and served on its annual dinner committee from 1971 to 1984.
Mr. Glenday was commissioner of the Nashua Police Commission from 1980 to 1981, and was chairman of the Nashua Housing Authority from 1976 to 1980. For many years, he was involved in education, serving as chairman of the board of trustees of Alvirne High School in Hudson; a member of the board of trustees at St. Michael's College in Colchester Vt.; chairman of NH Vocational Technical College board of trustees in Nashua; a member of the American Association of Secondary School Principals; and a member of the N.H. Elementary Principals Association.
He also served as director of the Business and Industry Association of New Hampshire in Concord from 1975 to 1980; was director of the New England Council in Boston from 1957 to 1979; was a member of the American Electronics Association of Washington, D.C.; and a member of the Good Roads Association of Concord.
He held memberships in the National and New Hampshire Education Associations was a past president of the Hudson Teachers Association.
Mr. Glenday was a graduate of Troy High School in 1943 and earned a bachelor's degree in education from Keene Teachers College in 1950. He received his masters degree in education from the State Teachers College in Fitchburg, Mass., in 1952 and took graduate courses at the University of New Hampshire.
He was an Army veteran, serving during World War II from July 1943 to February 1946. He was a commander of the American Legion in Troy from 1946 to 1950.
An avid golfer, Mr. Glenday was a former member of the Wentworth Country Club and the Rockingham Country Club of Newmarket. He had been active in fund raising for the Odyssey House in Hampton and with the Heart Fund in Portsmouth for several years.
He was the husband of Maureen (Leger) Glenday, and was predeceased by his former wife, Edith M. (Berk) Glenday, who died in July 1995.
In addition to his wife Maureen, survivors include a son, Timothy S. Glenday of Nashua; a daughter-in-law, June S. (Piwowarski) Glenday of Nashua; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Martin J. and Doris Glenday of Onstead, Mich., and William and Maxine Glenday of East Sandwich, N.H.; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ruth E. and Marty R. Dedo of Keene; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a son, Charles A. "Buddy" Glenday Jr., who died Dec. 11, 2000.
GLENDAY - Charles A. Glenday, 76, of 22 Hunt St., Nashua, died Feb. 28, 2002. Calling hours will be held at the Farwell Funeral Home, 18 Lock St., Nashua, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, March 3. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday in St. Patrick Church, 138 Coolidge Ave., Manchester. Friends are invited to meet at the church. Entombment at the Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum in Nashua will take place at a later date. The Farwell Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
COLLINS - Mary P. (Gray) Collins, 91, of 364 Portsmouth Ave., Greenland, died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002. Oraville M. Piché
YORK, Maine - Oraville M. Piché, 87, of 5 North St., and formerly of Kittery for 80 years, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, after a lengthy period of failing health. Born Feb. 25, 1915, in Kittery, she was the middle child of Clarence and Lucy (Haley) Grant.
In the 1940s she got into the banking business beginning with Community Trust on the shipyard. She then went to N.H. National Bank and stayed with that bank as it changed names.
For hobbies, she enjoyed gardening and reading. She was a lifelong parishioner of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, until her move to York, Maine.
Survivors include a brother, George Grant of Los Angeles, Calif.; a daughter, Patricia Keen and her husband, Everett, of York; a son, Rear Admiral Gordon G. Piché, USCG, Ret. and his wife, R. Jane, of Annapolis, Md.; four grandchildren, Kenneth Keen of York, Tami Colburn and her husband, Jeffrey, of South Berwick, James D. Piché and his wife, Mary Jo, of Vienna, Va., and George G. Piché and his wife, Kristy, of Kendallville, Ind.; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel E. Piché; a sister, Helen G. Kauffman; and a nephew, Gerald D. Kauffmann.
PICHÉ - Oraville M. Piché, 87, of 5 North St., York, Maine, died Feb. 28, 2002. A graveside service will be held in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery, on Tuesday, April 23, at 11 a.m. There will be no visiting hours. Family flowers only. RYE - Funeral services for Mr. Harry A. Sanborn Jr., 82, of 37 Mountainview Terrace, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth on Thursday. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. James Church in Portsmouth with Fr. Agapit H. Jean Jr., Pastor, officiating. Del Record Jr. offered words of remembrance and presented the gifts. Heather Weller was vocalist and Jean Goss was organist. In attendance were communicants of the church and representatives from Frank E. Booma Post No. 6 of the American Legion.
Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Fr. Jean. Bearers were Maurice Rancourt, Del Record Jr., D.J. Record, Walter Kowalczyk, Bill Greener, and Harry Sanborn.
The American Flag that draped the casket was folded by Carl B. Walton Sr., chaplain of Frank E. Booma Post No. 6, including Donald W. Poison, commander; Richard Brooks, adjutant/C.G.; Carl B. Walton Sr., chaplain; Bernard N. Lowe, Color Guard Post #6; and Brenda Walton, past president and past department president of Unit No. 6.
Genevieve G. Caldwell
PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Genevieve G. "Buddy" Caldwell, 86, of 171 Elwyn Ave., died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.
Born in Salisbury, Mass., May 30, 1915, she was the daughter of Harry E. and Wilhemenia (Frost) Congdon.
Mrs. Caldwell was employed as the tax collector for Portsmouth, retiring Dec. 31, 1975, after 30 years.
She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth.
Mrs. Caldwell was predeceased by her husband, Stacy W. Caldwell.
Survivors include three cousins, Madolyn L. Lynch of Salisbury, Robert O. Antell of Amesbury, Mass., and Russell A. Antell of Fort Pierce, Fla.; twin step-daughters, June Caldwell Lewis and her husband, Bernard, of Stratham, Joan Caldwell Gerrish and her husband, Ray, of Strafford; several step-grandchildren; two sisters in-law, Barbara Caldwell of Kittery, and June Caldwell Hardin of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; two nephews, Todd Hardin and his wife, Mary, of St. Claire Shore, Mich.; and Bruce Caldwell and his wife Viola of Kittery.
CALDWELL - Mrs. Genevieve G. (Congdon) Caldwell, 86, of 171 Elwyn Ave., Portsmouth, died Feb. 28, 2002. A funeral service will be held at J. Robert W. Stone
PORTSMOUTH - The funeral for Robert William "Woody" Stone, 75, of 928 South St., was held Friday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth. Funeral services were held at the North Congregational Church, Market Square, Portsmouth, with Rev. Dr. Arthur L. Hilson, Pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Portsmouth, presiding. A poem entitled "Today Is A Very Good Day To Die" was read by his five children Susan Rysnik, Beth Stone Hancock, Robert Stone II, Kathleen Stone Carter, and Jennifer Stone. Words of reflection were given by Chuck Dudley, Jim Noucas, and Bruce Pafford. Vocalist was Wendell Purrington, Trumpeter was Marc Weatherby, and organist was Gary MacDonald.
In attendance was a large delegation of former associates and representatives from Portsmouth High School.
Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Rev. Dr. Hilson.
The American Flag that draped the casket was folded and presented to Mr. Stone's son, Robert Stone II.
Bearers were Robert Stone II, John Rysnik, Bill Hancock, Steve Carter, Jason Stone, and Bryan Williams Hancock.
William A. Massett
HAMPTON - William A. Massett, 69, of 18 Ancient Highway, died Thursday, February 28, 2002 at Exeter Healthcare.
Mr. Massett was born in Chicago, October 29, 1932, the son of the late Robert J. and Lucille H. (Anderson) Massett.
Mr. Massett was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the Air Force.
He worked 22 years at the University of Connecticut as executive director of public safety, retiring in 1991. He was previously a member of the Illinois Crime Investigation Commission's Division of Narcotic Control.
He came to Hampton in 1997 from Manchester, Conn., where he was active in community service and was a member of the Manchester Lodge of Elks.
Mr. Massett was the husband of Kathleen A. (Snow) Massett.
In addition to his wife, family members include three daughters, Kimberly Massett of Hampton, Holly Massett of Tacoma Park, Md., and Nancy Massett of Hampton; and one granddaughter, Madison. He was predeceased by his son, Jay A. Massett in 1991, and his brother, Robert J. Massett in 1971.
MASSETT - William A. Massett of 18 Ancient Highway Hampton, died February 28, 2002. Services will be held at the graveside in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. Please omit flowers. RYE - Funeral services for Mr. Harry A. Sanborn Jr., 82, of 37 Mountainview Terrace, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, Thursday, with a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at St. James Church in Portsmouth. Father Agapit H. Jean Jr., pastor, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Del Record Jr. Presentation of the gifts by D.J. Record. Heather Weller was soloist and Jean Goss was the organist.
In attendance were communicant of the church and representatives from Frank E. Booma Post No. 6, American Legion.

Phyllis H. Lufkin
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Phyllis H. Lufkin, 87, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Saturday. The Rev. Dawn A. Shippee, pastor of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth, officiated.
Order of Eastern Star services were held at the funeral home Saturday morning by Rivermouth Chapter No. 54 of Portsmouth, including Worthy Matron, Mary Ann Flanders, PM; Worthy Patron, George N. Flanders, PP; Chaplain, A. Kenneth Day, PP; Adah, Anne M Goodwin; Ruth, Cathy A. Brown, PM; Esther, Barbara S. Pierce, PM; Martha, Mary E. (Ellie) Pereira; Electa, Edith L. Lovering, PM; Robert M. Helen LeBlanc
PORTSMOUTH - Helen LeBlanc, 84, of 20 Islington St., died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a period of failing health.
Born Nov. 6, 1917, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Cornelius and Helen (Campbell) Driscoll. She attended St. Patrick School, graduated from Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1934, and was a graduate of Plymouth Business College.
She was employed for more than 40 years at the National Gypsum Co.
She was an active member of St. Catherine of Siena Church, and volunteered at the soup kitchen and the senior center. She was a longtime member of AA.
She was the wife of the late Eugene J. LeBlanc, who died in 1981.
Survivors include her son, Dick E. LeBlanc of Richmond, Calif.; three grandchildren, Barbara, Christopher and James; a great-grandson, Malcolm; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two daughters, Mary LeBlanc and Frances LeBlanc; two brothers, Cornelius and John Driscoll; and a sister, Mary Bray.
LeBLANC - Helen LeBlanc, 84, of 20 Islington St., Portsmouth, died March 2, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Visiting hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Virginia P. Glidden
NEWTON - Virginia Phillips (Gammons) Glidden, 85, of 31 Bear Hill Road, died Saturday morning, March 2, 2002, at Exeter Hospital, surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of 60 years of James Parker Glidden.
She was born Oct. 23, 1916, in Stoneham, Mass., the daughter of Abner and Rose (Doucet) Gammons, and graduated from Reading (Mass.) High School.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening, knitting and spending time with her family. Her two cats, Ruthie and C.C., were also an important part of her life.
In addition to her husband, survivors include her children, George Glidden of Portsmouth, Ruth Benjamin of Newton, Jane Sweetsir of Plaistow, Sara Glidden of Fairfield, Conn., and Amy Robinson of Kennebunk, Maine; her sister, Ruth Lawless of Rowayton, Conn.; 12 grandchildren; and 7½ great-grandsons.
GLIDDEN - Virginia P. (Gammons) Glidden, 85, of Newton, died March 2, 2002. Funeral services and burial in Locust Grove Cemetery, Merrimac, Mass., will be private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Friends and relatives are invited to an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, at the residence of Ruth and Jim Benjamin, 34 Bear Hill Road, Newton. Howard A. Geddis
MANCHESTER - Howard Alson Geddis, 90, a retired U.S. Army colonel, educator and counselor, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002.
He was the devoted husband of Louise (Hutchings) Geddis for 62 years.
He enjoyed working on his 100-acre farm, Rockhaven, in Chester, where he was a resident for 54 years. In 2000, he and his wife moved to Hillcrest Terrace Retirement Community in Manchester.
At his recent 90th birthday party, he was asked what he held most important in his life. He responded, "my family."
Born in Springfield, Mass., on Feb. 18, 1912, he was the son of Howard and Marion (Gibbs) Geddis. After the death of his mother, he moved to New Hampshire and graduated from Bristol High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in psychology from the University of New Hampshire. Later, he completed a program of counseling courses at Boston University.
In 1939, Mr. Geddis started his career teaching agricultural courses at Wayne West Virginia High School. Following World War II until his retirement, he worked as a vocational training specialist and later as a counseling psychologist for the Veterans Administration in Manchester and Boston. Disabled veterans throughout New Hampshire and Massachusetts were provided with individualized vocational training through his efforts. After his retirement from the VA, he continued to assist veterans as a counselor at New Hampshire College.
In World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in both the United States and Europe as an artillery instructor. In the Korean War, he again served in the artillery unit, earning the rank of major. He then became responsible for the development of the United Nations Agricultural Project for the Korean people and later attained the rank of colonel.
Mr. Geddis was active in many military organizations. He was a founding member of the New Hampshire Chapter of the Military Order of World Wars, in which he served as adjutant for eight years. He was also a member of the Reserve Officers Association and held the office of historian in the Retired Officers Association.
He was a member of various organizations in the town of Chester and of the Church of the Transfiguration in Derry.
In addition to his wife survivors include two daughters, Lorraine Varney Riggs of Manchester and Linda (Geddis) Broadwater of East Burke, Vt.; four grandchildren, Dean J. Varney of Boston, Mass., Alexandra Varney McDonald of Hull, Mass., Molly Broadwater Chase and Theodore Ernest Broadwater, both of Seattle, Wash.; two great-grandchildren, Maxwell Howard McDonald of Hull, Mass., and Maya Rose Chase of Seattle; sons-in-law, Ernest H. Broadwater of East Burke, Vt., and W. Paul Riggs of Manchester; and sisters, Dorothy Fairbanks of Massachusetts, Virginia Dobrozensky of Florida and Marion Petroccia of Virginia.
He was predeceased by sisters Ruth Dubuque and Elizabeth Sullivan, both of Vermont.
GEDDIS - Howard Alson Geddis, 90, retired U.S. Army colonel, of Manchester and formerly of Chester, died Feb. 25, 2002. A memorial service and reception will be held at 11 a.m. March 9 at the Church of the Transfiguration, One Hood Road, Derry. A burial service with military honors will be held at a later date at Great Hill Cemetery, Chester.
