Daniel E. Davis Sr.

YORK, Maine - Daniel E. Davis Sr., 83, formerly of Desmond Lane, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at The McGinnis Home in Berwick, Maine, after a long illness.

Born in Boston, Mass., June 10, 1918, he was the son of Daniel and Gertrude (Emerson) Davis and graduated from Newton High School, Class of 1936.

He was the "D" in D&N Taxi of York, which he had owned with his wife, Nancy. He was a member of the No Trump Bridge Club.

He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley (Robertson) Davis, who died in 1979, and by his second wife, Nancy Lee (Henley) Davis, who died in 1993.

Survivors include his two sons, Daniel E. Davis Jr., a Boston sportscaster, of Burlington, Conn., and Wayne Davis of Rio Rancho, N.M.; three daughters, Carole Burton of Vancouver, Wa., Victoria Pincoske of Gardiner, N.Y., and Joanne Johnston of Seoul, Korea; two brothers, Alan Davis of West Newton, Mass.. and James L. Davis of West Lebanon, Maine; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

DAVIS - Daniel E. Davis Sr., 83, formerly of York, Maine, died Feb. 14, 2002. Memorial services will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. in the First Parish Congregational Church, York Street, York, Maine. There are no visiting hours. If desired, donations in his name may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York, Maine.

Clifton S. Seavey

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Clifton S. Seavey, 90, of 581 Colonial Drive, Portsmouth, were held on Thursday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth. Rev. Dawn A. Shippee, Pastor of the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth, officiated.

Burial will be in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, in the spring.

Naomi W. Thomas

PETERS TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Naomi W. Thomas, 93, of Friendship Village, died on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002.

She was born in Portsmouth, Va., and was educated at Westhampton College of the University of Richmond. She married the late George R. Thomas in 1933, and they lived in Durham, N.H. until 1988.

She earned a master's degree in history with a thesis on The History of Women in the State of N.H.

Mrs. Thomas is survived by her daughter, Dr. Ann Thomas Wilkins; mother-in-law of David G. Wilkins; grandmother of Rebecca L. Wilkins, Katherine M. Wilkins, Chris Colburn and Tyler Jennings; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Monday. There will be no public visitation. The family suggests memorial contributions to The Elaine Connors Center for Wildlife, Madison, NH 03849 or The Art Gallery of the University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH 03824. Arrangements by Beinhauers, 2630 W. Liberty Avenue, Dormont, PA 15216.

Donald J. Evans

EXETER - Donald J. Evans, 74, of Main Street, died suddenly Feb. 12, 2002, in Melbourne, Fla., while on vacation.

Born July 31, 1927, in Winthrop, Mass., he was the son of the late Harold and Mildred (Eldridge) Evans.

He grew up in Winthrop, Mass., and graduated from Cushing Academy. He served during World War II in the United States Marine Corps.

He worked for many years as a hardware representative. Even after retirement, he got a part-time job in Seabrook at the hardware store.

He was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the Exeter Country Club. He also enjoyed horse racing.

He was predeceased by a sister, Judy Millar.

He is survived by two daughters, Leslie Evans of Portsmouth, and Sheryl Horreanopolis of Princeton, Mass.; one son, Don Evans of Peta Luma, Calif.; four grandchildren; four brothers, Sam Evans of Pennsylvania, Harold Evans and Richard Evans, both of Winthrop, Mass., and Mike Evans of Florida; several nieces and nephews; and his good friend and companion of 20 years, Irene Hennessey of Cambridge, Mass.

EVANS - Donald J. Evans, 74, of Main Street, Exeter, died Feb. 12, 2002. Calling hours will be held on Monday, Feb. 18, 4-7 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, Pine Street, Exeter. Burial will follow in the Exeter Cemetery, Exeter. In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made in his memory to the Exeter Public Library, talking books for the blind, Chestnut Street, Exeter, NH 03833.

Howard R. Bailey

HAMPSTEAD - Howard R. Bailey, 77, of 316 West Road, Hampstead, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at his home.

Born in Beverly, Mass., March 28, 1924, he was the son of the late Chester F. and Grace L. (Rogers) Bailey. He graduated from Amesbury High School with the Class of 1942. He received an associate's degree in electrical engineering from Lowell Tech in 1964.

Mr. Bailey was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Marine Corps from Sept. 22, 1942, until his honorable discharge on Jan. 28, 1946.

He had worked for Western Electric and Bell Labs, and from 1974 to 1990 he was an independent electrical contractor.

Actively involved in scouting from 1968 to 1988, he was a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 33 in Hampstead, serving as committee chairman for many years. He also belonged to the Great Bay Singles. In the last years of his life, he developed a true passion for photography, and had joined the Merrimack Valley Camera Club.

He was predeceased by his wife, Roberta A. (Williams) Bailey, who died in 1986.

He is survived by his son, Steven A. Bailey and his wife Kimberly C. (Flinchbauth) of Morrisonville, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Sebastian and Lydia Bailey, both of Morrisonville, N.Y.; two brothers, Alan D. Bailey of Las Cruses, N.M., and Dear R. Bailey of Worcester, Mass.; his sister, Barbara I. Randall of Amesbury, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

BAILEY - Howard R. Bailey, 77, of 316 West Road, Hampstead, N.H., died Feb. 12, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Paul C. Rogers and Sons Funeral Home, 334 Main St., Haverhill. Private springtime interment will be in Holy Angels Cemetery, Plaistow, N.H. Calling hours are 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002. Memorial contributions may be made to The Nature Conservancy, 22 Bridge St., 4th Floor, Concord, NH 03301.

Jean M. Effinger

DOVER - Jean M. Effinger, 80, of 60 Middle Road, died Feb. 15, 2002, at Langdon Place of Dover. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Oct. 22, 1921, she was the daughter of Richard and Jean (Wise) Duggan.

She had lived in Dover for the past three years, moving from Atlanta, Ga. and previously, New Jersey.

She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Dover.

While a resident of Atlanta, she worked as a librarian's assistant at the Atlanta Public Library.

She worked as a teacher's aide in New Jersey, was an avid reader, and enjoyed the New York Times.

She was the widow of William Louis Effinger Jr.

Members of the family include a son, William L. Effinger III, of Atlanta, Ga.; three daughters, Claire Sheridan of Dover, N.H., Karen Otto of Vienna, Austria, and Bowie, Md., and Lauraine Davidson, MD, of Medford, Mass.; a brother, Robert Duggan of Elizabethtown, N.Y.; and her nine grandchildren, Christopher and Jeremy Sheridan, Tracy and Millar Effinger Freeman, Laura Effinger Harris, Samuel and Rachel Davidson, Katy and Amanda Otto.

EFFINGER - Jean M. Effinger, 80, of 60 Middle Road, Dover, died Feb. 15, 2002. Relatives and friends may call on Sunday, Feb. 17, 4-6 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday, Feb. 18, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church, corner of Chestnut and Third streets, Dover. The Rev. Fritz Cerullo, pastor, is the celebrant. If desired, donations in her memory may be made to either Seacoast Hospice, 662 Central Ave., Dover, N.H. 03820, or to the Dover Library, 73 Locust St., Dover, NH 03820.

Abigail Christine Gianotti

ROCHESTER - Funeral services for baby girl Abigail Christine Gianotti, the infant daughter of Anthony and Christine (Buck) Gianotti, of 11 Stillwater Circle, Rochester, N.H., were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth, Friday, with services held at the Lighthouse Assembly of God in Rochester. The Rev. Lance O'Brien, pastor, officiated. Opening prayers and readings were given by the Rev. Fredi Vega.

In attendance were members of the church and members of Bethel Assembly of God in Portsmouth, including the Keenagers.

Burial will be in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, in the spring.

Dorothy C. Ricker

BRENTWOOD - Funeral services for Dorothy C. (Thompson) Ricker, age 90, of Brentwood, and formerly of Court Street, Portsmouth, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Friday. Pastor Donald Gum of the Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth officiated.

Burial will be in the Newington Cemetery, Newington, in the spring.

HEMINGWAY - Barbara Anne, 47, of Norton Road in Kittery, Maine, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at her home. A funeral will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church on Chapel Street in Portsmouth. Arrangements are by the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

MaryAnn Cuvellier

PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. MaryAnn (Peggy) Cuvellier, 67, of 109 Oriental Gardens, passed away Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at her home, as she wished.

Born in Bangor, Maine, on Sept. 14, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Maynard E. and Catherine P. (Niegorski) Sprague. She was married to the late Marc A. (Babe) Cuvellier of Portsmouth.

Peggy lived on the Seacoast for over thirty years. She worked as a waitress at many restaurants such as Valley's, Hectors Country Kitchen, Pirates Cove, Warren's and others in the area. She also worked at Data General, Watts Fluid Air, Kings Department Store, Riches and Bradlees. Peggy retired from Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. after 12 years of service and most recently was employed part time at CardSmart.

All those who remember working with Peggy throughout the years will remember how her laughter could fill a room. She was loved by many. Her greatest pastimes were her children and grandchildren, going to beaches, and many sporting events that involved her grandchildren. She enjoyed reading, coin collecting and filling all the candy dishes she could!

Peggy is survived by a very loving sister, Mrs. Dale (Susan) Hanks of Pensacola. Fla.; a special aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Janes of Danvers, Mass.; and four beloved children, Mrs. Kevin (Linda) Niles of Kittery Point, Maine, Mrs. Dwayne (Deborah) Robichaud of Portsmouth, Mr. Wayne R. Estes and wife Diana of Portsmouth, and Mr. Daniel W. Russell and girlfriend Vicki Gustin of Dover; six grandchildren, Jason Mckay, Kelly Niles, Kevin Niles Jr., Jared and Tyler Estes, and Matthew J. Ryan; and dear friends Wayne Bailey and Milton Post of Lebanon, Conn., Virginia Starns of Portsmouth, Judy Soucy of Dover, Helen Howell of Hampton, Mr. and Mrs. Ron (Pat) Delaney and Stella Delaney of Albuquerque, N.M., and so many more.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Eugene (Sonny) Sprague of Lebanon, Conn., in 1994, and Chester I. Sprague of Manchester in 1984.

Barbara Orsini Hemingway

KITTERY, Maine - Barbara Orsini Hemingway, 47, of 122 Norton Road died peacefully Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at her home.

She was born on Aug. 16, 1954, in Corning, N.Y., the daughter of Sam and Irene Orsini of Big Flats, N.Y.

Barb graduated from Horseheads High School in 1972 and Baldwin–Wallace College in 1977, majoring in biology.

In 1980 she married Booth R. Hemingway of Kittery and became a partner in Piscataqua Landscaping Co. Inc.

A master gardener, she designed perennial gardens for clients from the Seacoast to the South Shore of Massachusetts to northern New Jersey.

After the 1994 season, Barb retired from Piscataqua Landscaping to pursue a new career in healing work studying with Lynn Andrews of Carefree, Ariz. In 1999 she was ordained a minister of sacred arts by the International Healers Assembly of Spiritual Healers and Earth Stewards.

In addition to her mother and her husband of 21 years, survivors include two sons, Sam and Booth Hemingway of Kittery; Sam, Roberta, Francesca, Jessica and Seraphina Orsini of South Berwick, and Rich, Gaye and Ann Orsini of Marietta, Ga.

HEMINGWAY - Barbara Orsini, 47, of 122 Norton Road, Kittery, Maine, died peacefully Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at her home. A funeral will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at 11 a.m. from St. John's Episcopal Church on Chapel Street in Portsmouth. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Kenneth R. King

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Kenneth R. King, 86, of 47 Lois St., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home – Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Saturday. The Rev. Vivan Martindale, pastor of the Middle Street Baptist Church, officiated. Mr. King's nephew, David Oaks, gave words of remembrance.

In attendance were members of the church and representatives from Portsmouth Babe Ruth and American Legion Baseball.

Burial will be in the Morrison Cemetery, Deerfield, in the spring.

John D. Forsberg Sr.

ROCHESTER - Funeral services for John D. Forsberg Sr., 75, of 5 Falkland Lane and formerly of 57 Mountain View Terrace, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home – Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Saturday. Father Bartholomew Leon, pastor of St. George's Maronite Catholic Church in Dover, officiated. Assisting Father Leon with services were Subdeacon Charles M. Flayhan and Acolyte George Morrissey. In attendance were members of the church and a large delegation of representatives from the construction industry.

Burial was in Central Cemetery, Rye, with committal services by Father Leon.

The American flag was folded and presented to Mr. Forsberg's widow, Marianne (Farrell) Forsberg.

Bearers were J.D. Forsberg, Ronnie Anderson, Alex Bean, David Hutchins, Jeffrey Kapral, Brian Decot, Scott Barker and Jay McKay.

Wake services were held at the funeral home Friday evening by Father Leon.

Harold E. Venner Jr.

CHESTER - , 73, of Raymond Road died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at his home.

Mr. Venner was born in Derry on Dec. 10, 1928, the son of the late Harold E. and Hazel (Kimball) Venner Sr. He had resided in Chester for 46 years, formerly living in Derry. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a chief master sergeant and also served with the Air National Guard. He was a former Chester selectman and a member of the Chester Congregational Church.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Roberta J. (Harvey) Venner of Chester; three daughters, Cheryl V. Silva of Kingston and her husband Joseph, Debra V. Potter of Londonderry and her husband Wayne, and Janice E. Bethune of Isleboro, Maine, and her husband Glenn; two sons, Jeffrey A. Venner and David P. Venner, both of Chester; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his sister, Hazel Grant of Haverhill, Mass., his brother, Paul Graham of Deerfield; and several nieces and nephews.

VENNER - Harold E. Venner Jr., 73, of Chester died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at his home. Following cremation, memorial calling hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. Margaret N. Semprini

BRENTWOOD - Margaret Norma Semprini, 81, of 8 Michael Bennett Road, died at her home on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, surrounded by her family.

Born in Rye on April 14, 1920, she was a daughter of William and Sarah (Burchill) Walsh. She was a graduate of Robinson Female Seminary in Exeter.

Her primary focus in life was her family. She was a founding volunteer at the Great Bay School and also volunteered in the Brentwood schools. She enjoyed ceramics and CB radio. She was a member of the Portsmouth Lodge #2303 of the Sons of Italy.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Ralph Semprini; her children, Joan Margro and her husband, Alfred, of Deltona, Fla., John Semprini and his wife, Cynthia, of Exeter, and Sarah "Sally" McKenna and her husband, George, of Portsmouth; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; three sisters, Eileen Semprini of Madbury, Jean Miksch of Penn Valley, Calif., and Jacqueline Salvatore of Dover; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Constance Hankin.

SEMPRINI - Margaret Norma Semprini, 81, of Brentwood, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Theresa Church, Central Road, Rye Beach. Visiting hours will be from

2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Central Cemetery in Rye. Memorials may be made to Rockingham VNA and Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

William E. McCann

VERO BEACH, Fla., and NORTH HAMPTON - William E. McCann died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002. He was born in Lowell, Mass., on Sept. 27, 1930, son of Michael T. and Margaret J. (Masterson) McCann.

A U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, he served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Wright (CVL-49) from 1951 to 1955.

He graduated from Keith Academy in 1949, was educated in Bradshaw College, Boston University, and earned his Fellow of Life Insurance Management (F.M.L.I.) with a specialty in computer science. He was awarded an honorary doctor of philosophy degree from St. Patrick's College Maynooth, County Kildare, Ireland, the only pontifical college in all of Ireland and Great Britain.

He commenced his insurance career with the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Co., rising to become one of the top insurance salesmen for John Hancock, Boston, Mass. During his sales career, he also became the first million-dollar producer in the Boston home office of the Prudential Insurance Co. of America. He steadily rose within the insurance industry, becoming the youngest president of a publicly held life insurance company at the age of 32. He retired as president of Foundation Life Insurance Company of America, covering a span of 35 years.

After a two-year retirement, he was enticed back into the corporate world, becoming president, CEO and director of operations of Allied Junction Corporation, located in New Jersey. Through his efforts, he created the largest public/private partnership in the field of transportation in the United States. The legacy that was left was the current Allied Junction transfer station in Secaucus, N.J., which will create interstate mass transit for the residents of New Jersey. The complex will be a landmark on the eastern spur of the N.J. Turnpike. His favorite saying was: "The Allied Junction Project will take New Jersey out of the shadows of New York and create its own skyline."

He was very active in the Catholic Church in the United States and in Ireland, having been honored by Pope John Paul II with the highest honor bestowed upon a layperson - Knight of the Grand Cross of St. Gregory the Great. In addition, he was a Knight of Malta and a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

He was also very active in Republican political circles, having been President Reagan's national finance consultant. He was President Reagan's first ambassadorial nomination to the country of Ireland. It was a historic event in that it was the first time a president announced his ambassadorial appointee on the soil of the country to which he was appointed. President Reagan also appointed him commissioner of Ellis Island. Later, he was manager for Gen. Alexander H. Haig Jr.'s campaign for the presidency.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Virginia Blouin McCann; two children, E. Tiffany McCann of New York and W. Nevins McCann, also of New York; and a brother, Ralph F. McCann of Lowell, Mass.

McCANN - William E. McCann, of John's Island, Vero Beach, Fla., and North Hampton, formerly of Short Hills, N.J., died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002. A funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at St. Rose of Lima Church, 50 Short Hills Ave., Short Hills, N.J. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A private interment will be held in Rye, N.H. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at Smith and Smith (Suburban), 415 Morris Ave., Springfield, N.J. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to William E. McCann, Diabetes Foundation, c/o Connell Foley LLP, 85 Livingston Ave., Roseland, NJ 07068.
