Natalie G. Stevens
WELLS, Maine - Natalie Geneva (Hodgdon) Stevens, 76, of Butternut Trail, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born May 19, 1925, in Portsmouth, N.H., one of nine children of Sarah Y. (Gove) and Forrest E. Hodgdon. She was a 1943 graduate of Portsmouth High School. She was formerly married to the late John E. Stevens of Newmarket, N.H. She lived most of her life in South Berwick.
She was a longtime employee of Davidson/Textron in Dover, retiring in 1996. She was also an award-winning Avon salesperson and a member of its prestigious President's Club.
She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #47 in Rollinsford, N.H. In her retirement, she enjoyed tournament cribbage with the Trailblazers Club of Wells.
She was predeceased by her parents and several siblings.
Survivors include her daughter, Sandra L. Ham of South Berwick; her sons, Edward F. Stevens of Wells, John E. Stevens of Berwick, Duane E. Stevens of Wells, M. Joseph Stevens of South Berwick, and Richard D. Stevens of South Berwick and formerly of Sanford; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Priscilla Aubertine of Portsmouth, N.H.

Mark W. Bateman
BIDDEFORD, Maine - Mark W. "Moose" Bateman, 43, of Elm Street, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at his home.
Born in Exeter, N.H., he was raised in the Seacoast and attended Portsmouth schools, graduating from Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1976.
Moose lived in a number of towns in the Seacoast area including, Rye, Newmarket, Epping and Portsmouth.
A talented motorcycle mechanic, Moose owned Brothers and Others Motorcycle shop and Moose Motors in Brentwood, N.H. He truly enjoyed his motorcycle experiences, even his "winter" rides. He had traveled across the United States on his Harley-Davidson enjoying the solitude of the open road.
Moose was affiliated for more than 25 years with the Iron Horsemen Motorcycle Club.
Among many things Moose will be remembered for will be his love for his tattoos and body piercings, which he enjoyed designing and seeing through to completion, by a number of talented tattoo artists, and his enormous heart, which led to his enjoyment of helping children through many activities including the Toys for Tots motorcycle ride.
In addition to his wife Elizabeth "Betty" (Rowley) Bateman, he is survived by his father, Arthur W. Bateman of Barrington, N.H.; a sister, Robin and her husband David Heim of Exeter, N.H.; a brother, Bruce Bateman of New Hampshire; a niece; a number of aunts, uncles and cousins; and his beloved pig, Stroker "Porkey" Pig.
BATEMAN - Mark W. "Moose" Bateman, 43, of Elm Street, Biddeford, Maine, died Feb. 1, 2002. A funeral will be held at 12 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, with visiting for friends and family from 10 to noon, prior to the service, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery, Maine. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in his memory to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, JDRF-Maine Chapter, 500 Forest Ave., Suite Six, Portland, ME 04101; or a child abuse and neglect charity of one's choice. Ruth B. Remick
JENSEN BEACH, Fla. - Ruth Bennett Remick, 78, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at the Hospice of Martin & St. Lucie Residence.
She was born in Rockland, Maine, and lived in Camden, Maine.
During World War II, she was a telephone operator for the U.S. Army.
Prior to retirement, she was a service station operator in Portsmouth, N.H.
She was of the Episcopal faith and was a friend of Bill W.
She is survived by a son, Bennett D. McCarthy of Neptune, N.J.; a daughter, Edith M. McCarthy of Jensen Beach; two grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and two nieces.
She was predeceased by her husbands, Daniel McCarthy and Richard Remick, and a sister, Helen Day.
Arrangements are under the direction of Aycock Funeral Home, Jensen Beach.
Lida Mehlman Choate
SACO, Maine - Lida Evelyn Tarbox Mehlman Choate, 90, of Wildwood Drive, died Feb. 4, 2002, at the Pine Point Nursing Home. She was born in Biddeford Pool, Maine, daughter of Ernest A. and Laura Snow Tarbox. She had resided in Scarborough for more than 20 years but for the past five years made her home in Saco.
She graduated from Thornton Academy in 1929 and was a member of the Tripod Staff. She was known across the country for more than 25 years as a reputable breeder of Maine coon and Himalayan kittens. Her kittens drew the attention of actor Lee Meredith and Hawaii Five-O actor James McArthur, the son of her favorite actress, Helen Hayes. Several television stations interviewed her and many articles were written about her as the "Cat Lady" of Pine Point. She published a story in the early 1980s about how the Maine coon got its name and was instrumental in the Maine coon cat achieving "state cat" status.
She had worked and managed several fire insurance companies from 1929 until 1968 and was named Insurance Woman of the Year.
For more than 40 years she did family genealogy and became a member of the Massachusetts Mayflower Society for being a descendant of Stephen Hopkins.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Gordon H. Mehlman, in 1957; her second husband, David Choate, in 1978; and one niece, Barbara Pope White, in 1972.
Survivors include one daughter, Glen Ellen Roth of Saco; one son, Gordon Mehlman of Reading, Mass.; one nephew, James R. Pope of Eliot; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
CHOATE - Lida E. Mehlman Choate, 90, of Saco, Maine, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002. Visiting hours are to be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, 365 Main St., Saco, with a 1 p.m. celebration service to immediately follow. The Rev. Peter Mercier will officiate. Spring burial will be in Dustan Cemetery. The family suggests that donations be made to the "On the Door" cat rescue program, c/o Yarmouth Veterinary Center, 75 Willow St., Yarmouth, ME 04096.
Marian E. Nason
KINGSTON - Marian Elizabeth Nason, 81, of Danville Road, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at the Exeter Hospital.
She was born July 12, 1920, in Weare, daughter of the late George and Stella (Colburn) DeCota.
She grew up in Deerfield and then Hampton, where she graduated from the Hampton Academy. She resided in Kingston for 45 years.
She worked for Western Electric in North Andover, Mass., for 22 years. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers.
She was predeceased by her husband, Elvin F. Nason, and her son Freeman Nason.
She is survived by her daughter, Susanne Fiset of Haverhill, Mass.; two sons, Paul Nason of Kingston and Gary Nason of Hollis, Maine; two stepchildren, Gilbert Nason of Virginia, and Virginia Langdon of Illinois; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Stella Makar and Ethel Baker, both of Deerfield, and Eva Sell of Florida; two brothers, Joseph DeCota of Brooksville, Fla., and Ralph Scribner of Deerfield; and several nieces and nephews.
NASON - Marian Elizabeth Nason, 81, of Danville Road, Kingston, died Feb. 4, 2002. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Kingston. Margaret M. Joyce
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Margaret M. Joyce, 81, of Elder Avenue, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital, North Providence. She was the wife of the late Edward J. Joyce Sr.
Born in the Fox Point section of Providence, she was a daughter of the late Daniel J. and Cecelia A. (Fox) Coffey and had lived in East Providence for 52 years.
She worked as a comptroller for Brown and Sharpe in Providence for seven years, retiring in 1950. She was a graduate of Hope High School.
She was a summer resident and member of the Beach Association of Roy Carpenter's Beach in Matunuck for 45 years. She was a member of the St. Martha Church Rosary and Altar Society in East Providence.
She leaves a daughter, Barbara A. McLoughlin of Smithfield; three sons, Dennis E. Joyce of Smithfield, Edward J. "Teddy" Joyce of East Providence, and David T. Joyce of Stratham, N.H.; five sisters, Mary A. Brown of Lincoln, Josephine J. Murray of Smithfield, and Anna J. Coffey, C. Agnes Diggins and Helena F. Eldredge, all of Providence; and six grandchildren.
JOYCE - Margaret M. Joyce, 81, of East Providence, R.I., died Monday. Her funeral will be held at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith St., Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Saint Martha Church, Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence. Burial will be in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter, R.I.
Annette L. Boisvert
PORTSMOUTH - Annette L. Boisvert, 96, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at the Rockingham Nursing Home in Brentwood after a long illness.
Born in St. Marie, Quebec, Canada, on June 14, 1905, she was a daughter of Charles and Clara (Rouleau) Carter and had been a resident of Portsmouth since 1942.
The widow of Arthur J. Boisvert, who died in 1981, she is survived by her daughter JoAnn Miller of Greenland; 10 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; two sisters, Claire Dion of Portsmouth, and Rita Dupuis of Canada; five brothers, Charles Carter, Renold Blouin, Hugh Blouin, Paul Blouin, and Guy Blouin, all of Canada; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two daughters, Arlene Boisvert and Marie Walker, and two sons, Laval Pomerleau and Denis Pomerleau.
BOISVERT - Annette L. Boisvert, 96, of Portsmouth, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Somersworth.
Robert N. Kendall
YORK, Maine - Robert N. Kendall, 61, of 1 Strater Hill, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at York Hospital.
He was born on April 28, 1940, in Rochester, N.H., the son of Kennett R. and Mary (Neal) Kendall. He was a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and a 1963 graduate of Dartmouth College, receiving a bachelor's degree in history. He also served in the New Hampshire National Guard.
Mr. Kendall was the collegiate crew chief of the eight-man crew team at Phillips Exeter Academy and Dartmouth College, and trained for the Olympics in the 1960s.
He was vice president of the family-run business, Kendall Insurance of Rochester, N.H.
Mr. Kendall attended the First Parish Congregational Church of York. He was instrumental in organizing the Rochester Boys Club during the 1960s and served on its board of directors. He served as a member of the York Hospital board of directors for 14 years and was a member of the board of directors of Great Bay Bank Shares for 20 years.
He had served as treasurer of Strawbery Banke for many years and as treasurer and accountant of The Music Hall of Portsmouth. He had also served as president of the trustees of Berwick Academy Lower School and was active with the endowment fund.
He had served on the board of directors of the York Country Club and was a member of the York Golf and Tennis Club. He enjoyed sailing Downeast on his sloop "Copesetic."
In addition to his wife, Ann (Laundon) Kendall of York, he is survived by two sons, Robert N. Kendall Jr. and his wife, Christine, of North Berwick, and Charles Rice Kendall of York; and one stepdaughter, Brynanne Anderson of York.
KENDALL - Robert N. Kendall, 61, of Strater Hill, York, Maine, died Feb. 4, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the First Parish Church of York, York Street, York. There will be no visiting hours. Leon Kumin
BEVERLY, Mass. - Leon Kumin, 81, died Feb. 5, 2002, at the Beverly Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born in Athol, Mass., son of the late Charles Kumin and Sarah Nathanson Kumin, he had lived in Beverly from 1968. He graduated from Athol public schools and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He was the former owner of Leon Kumin's Home Furnishings of Athol and later was a sales representative in the shoe industry, retiring 20 years ago.
He was a member of the Athol Lions Club and a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army in five different theaters of operation.
In addition to his wife, Ruth (Lourie) Kumin, he is survived by a daughter, Evalyn Lawnsby of Hamilton, Mass.; a son, Steven Kumin of Eliot, Maine; two sisters, Marion Kumin of Cambridge, Mass., and Beatrice Randall of Canada, and five grandchildren.
KUMIN - Leon Kumin of Beverly, Mass., father of Steven Kumin of Eliot, Maine, died Feb. 5, 2002. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at B'nai B'rith of Somerville Cemetery, Route 128, Peabody, Mass. Memorial observance will be held through Saturday evening at the home of Thomas and Evalyn Lawnsby. Doris D. Joyal
SOMERSWORTH - Doris D. Joyal, 71, of 2A Rita St., Somersworth, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a long battle with smoking-related illnesses.
She was born in Dover, Aug. 29, 1930, the daughter of Wilfred Poirier and Roseanna (Bellmore) Goodwin and had resided in the Dover/Durham/Somersworth area all of her life.
She had worked at Tiara Footwear for several years, she was a manufacturer at Eastern Air Device for several years, and later worked as a clerk at Burger King.
First and foremost, her toughest and most rewarding job was being a wife and a mother. She enjoyed caring for her loved ones and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Doris was a peaceful woman and an excellent cook. She was an avid player and lover of bingo, where she made many friends. She enjoyed playing cards and also loved to travel.
She was a member of the Dover Senior Citizens Center.
In addition to her husband of 53 years, Edward J. Joyal Jr., of Somersworth, she is survived by one son, John C. Joyal and his wife, Lee Ann, of Somersworth; three daughters, Mrs. Gerard (Edwina) Fogarty of Berwick, Maine, Mrs. George (Donna) Chapman of Amelia Island, Fla., and Mrs. Bruce (Linda) Shannon of Barrington; 10 grandchildren, Judith A. (Fogarty) Poligni, Todd M. Mailhoit, Jeffrey A. Barry, Kimberly L. (Fogarty) Chase, Traci L. Barry, Amy L. MacDermittroe, Christina Judith Chapman, Alexandra M. Joyal, Tyler E. Joyal and Timothy Shannon; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene of Florida and Rita Roes of Ohio; a brother, Richard Goodwin of North Berwick, Maine; aunts and uncles; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Doris is now at peace with her two daughters, Judith Joyal who died in 1968, and Sharon Joyal who died in 1993.
She was also predeceased by seven brothers and sisters, Edward Poirier, George Poirier, Yvonne Sullivan, Mary Wilson, Gloria Poirier, Theresa Parker and Barbara Palone.

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Naomi "Ruth" (Reed) Ranguette, 66, of 42 Cutts St., were held on Tuesday from J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, with a service at the Barrington Evangelical Free Church in Barrington. The Rev. Ted White officiated. The 23rd Psalm was read by Matthew McNally. Pianist was Christi Porvtand, and Joe Lipsey was the vocalist.
In attendance were members of the church.
Burial was in Notre Dame Cemetery in Pawtucket, R.I.
Pallbearers were Emil Bansil, Chuck Lindsey, Arthur Ranguette, Mike Ranguette, Joe Clark, Steven Clark, Adam Clark and Justin Clark.
