Leonard E. Vail
EFFINGHAM - Leonard E. Vail, 79, of Townhouse Road, died June 15, 2000, at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro.
He was born in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, the son of the late Garfield A. and Frances (Thoms) Vail. He attended schools in Brighton, Mass., and later worked as "jack of all trades." He worked for Lewis & Shepherd until 1960, and he owned and operated the Sunset Acres Rest Home in Hampstead until he retired in 1975.
Mr. Vail served as a private in the U.S. Army during World War II with the Army Corps of Engineers. He was also a member of the Assembly of God Church. He enjoyed country western music, playing the guitar professionally in Boston and all over New England for 40 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mary L. Vail, of Effingham; two sons, Donald E. Vail, of Auburn, and Garfield "Gary" Vail, of Pascagula, Miss.; two daughters, Carolyn Vail, of Denver, Colo., and Frances L. Vail-Sheldon, of Troy; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and a sister, Louise Gaudet, of North Berwick, Maine.
There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held today, Monday, at 11 a.m. in the Woodland Cemetery, Effingham.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Diabetes Foundation.

Eleanor (Ellie) M. Baybutt
CONWAY - Eleanor (Ellie) M. Baybutt, 84, passed away June 19, 2000 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Somerville, Mass., on July 4, 1915, the daughter of John and Caroline (Carrie) Hogquist.
She married Richard Baybutt (deceased 4/8/80) on Sept. 4, 1937. They lived in Billerica, Mass., where she was the assistant librarian for many years. The family spent many summers on Conway Lake and they fell in love with the area. Baybutt was active in the local AARP, Gibson Center, County Extension. She was an avid bridge player and a regular at the Monday Bridge Club at the Fryeburg Library.
Baybutt is survived by her son Richard Baybutt of Concord, married to Lucille Gagnon; her son, James Baybutt of Tamworth, married to Cathy (Duston) Ladieu; her daughter Sally Marr, married to John Marr of East Conway; grandchildren, Laurie Henry of Conway, Richard Marr of East Conway, Shar Laporte of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Stephen Baybutt of Brooklyn, N.Y.; step grandchildren, Jennifer Ladieu and Joshua Ladieu of Tamworth and Duston Ladieu of Newton, Mass.; three great grandsons, David Marr and James Marr of East Conway and Haven Laporte of Brooklyn, N.Y.; her sister, Phyllis Wallace of Boscowen; two nieces, two nephews and many grand nieces and nephews. Per Baybutt's wishes, there will be no memorial service. Her family will gather privately to celebrate her life. Box 432, North Conway 03860, who gave her loving care for many months, the Gibson Center of North Conway or the American Cancer Society.

Ezra L. Shipman
BARTLETT - Ezra L. Shipman, 26, of Bartlett, died suddenly on June 14, 2000 at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway. He was born in Waterville, Maine.
Shipman grew up in Carrboro, N.C. and China, Maine. He lived in South Portland, Maine for two years prior to moving to the Mount Washington Valley in 1994. He worked making snow at Attitash Mountain for the past six years.
His family includes his wife, Sarah M. Shipman of Bartlett; his son, Jacob L. Shipman also of Bartlett; his parents, David and Susan (Kiralis) Shipman of China, Maine; his sister, Johanna Shipman of New York City, N.Y.; his paternal grandfather, Jerome Shipman of Potomac, Md.; his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Kiralis of East Vassalboro, Maine; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at a later date. There will be no visiting hours. The Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway is in charge of arrangements.
Anne V. Smith
CONWAY - Anne V. Smith of Echo Acres, North Conway, passed away on June 14, 2000 from natural causes, at the age of 86 at the Sunbridge Rehabilitation Center in North Conway.
Smith (or "Queenie" as she was better known to her friends) moved to North Conway in 1980. She was an avid golfer and loved gardening.
Smith was born and raised in Stamford, Conn. After marrying, she and her husband moved to New Canaan, Conn. where they owned "The Town Pharmacy" for almost 30 years.
After her husband passed away, Smith owned and operated an antique shop in New Canaan for five years and then moved to North Conway.
Smith is survived by two sons; Warren G. Mattiello of North Conway and Matthew F. Mattiello of New York, N.Y. and a brother, Jerry Vorlick of Summerville, S.C.
Earle P. Williams
BROWNFIELD - Earle P. Williams, 92, of Route 160 in Brownfield, Maine, died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at the Fryeburg Health Care Center.
He was born in Ossipee, N.H., the son of Frank and Sarah Eldridge Williams. He attended schools in New Hampshire and Denmark, Maine. He lived in Brownfield most of his life and was a long-time woodsman. He also worked for Frankson's Furniture and Box Shop in Ossipee. He enjoyed being around kids and animals and just being outdoors.
He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Mildred Lane Williams, in 1996.
His family includes three sons; Earle P. Williams Jr. of Newfield, NH, Ralph Williams of Bridgton, Maine, and Rodney Williams of Brownfield; one daughter, Beverly Foster, of Brownfield, Maine; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be Friday, June 9, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Wood Funeral Home on 12 Warren Street in Fryeburg, Maine. A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 10, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Violet Eastman officiating. The burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Brownfield.
Helen Susan Cooper
Helen Susan Cooper, 87, died Wednesday May 31,2000 in Lewiston, Maine. She was born March 8, 1913 in Bethany, Conn. She lived most of her life in West Haven, Conn. She relocated to Silver Pines in Fryeburg, Me. after an active life which included being President of the West Haven Women's Club and President of the West Haven Chapter of the AARP as well as involvement with the Red Cross, West Haven Historical Society, West Haven Community House, Adult Education, and the West Haven Seniors. She was also a top sales representative for Avon for a number of years. The past two months of her life were spent with her granddaughter, Linda Candelora her husband Michael and her family in Lovell, Maine.
She is survived by a daughter, Joan Derosier of Tamworth, NH, a daughter, Susan Froelich of Kingfield, Me., a sister, Dot Hackett of West Haven, Conn., a sister, Minnie Downs of Hamden, CT., a sister, Hazel Hoppe of Southington, Conn., 7 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband Fred Cooper, a grandson, Eric Froehlich, a granddaughter, Karen Birkbeck, a granddaughter, Diane Meagher, and a sister, Florence Johnson.
A funeral service will be held Monday, June 5, at 10 AM at Wilson Funeral Home in Gray, Maine. Burial will follow in E. New Portland Cemetery, East New Portland, Me.
Gladys Jackson Paret
CHESHIRE, Conn. - Gladys Jackson Paret, 79, of Cheshire, Conn., died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at the Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford, Conn.
She was born May 3, 1921, in Babylon, Long Island, and was the daughter of the late Rev. William S. Jackson and Evangeline Harper Jackson.
She attended school in Connecticut and graduated from Hamden High School in 1938. She attended Douglas College of Rutgers University, receiving a bachelor of science degree in 1942. After teaching mathematics in Perthamboy and Haddonfield high schools for several years, she was employed by Equitable Life Insurance Co., and Vick Chemical Co., in New York City as an accountant, from which she retired.
She was the wife of the late Frank L. Paret, M.D.
She lived in Piscataway, N.J., for 23 years and raised four children. She was active in Christ Episcopal Church and in the League of Women Voters, chairman of the Shade Tree Commission and in the PTA, the Junior Guild of Christ Church, the Trowel Club and became an accomplished artist.
Mrs. Paret moved to Silver Lake, NH, with her family in 1969 and became active in the Silver Lake Sailing Club, Madison Garden Club and volunteered at Madison Library, and she was a founding member of the St. Margaret's Anglican Church in Conway.
She is survived by four children, Dr. Ronald S. Paret, MD, of Cheshire, Conn., Brian K. Paret, of Conway, Karen Arnold, of Littleton, Colo., and Dana Charles, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 13, at 11 a.m. in St. Margaret's Church in Conway. The Stempien Funeral Home in Meriden, Conn., is in charge of arrangements.
Vera "B" Smith Fisher Kiburtz
MADISON - Vera "B" Smith Fisher Kiburtz, 90, of Madison, died on June 1, 2000, at her daughter's home.
She was born on Aug. 9, 1909, in Lunenburg, Vt., the daughter of the late George and Clytie (Hartshorn) Smith.
She attended Laconia High School at the same time as her daughter in the early 1940s. She was one of the first adults ever admitted to attend classes with high school students. She had a varied work history from her youth on. In the late 1930s, she and her first husband operated the laundry for the Eastern Slope Inn in North Conway. She was a ship fitter or welder working on the Liberty Ships at the Portland Shipyard during World War II. She later worked at the Kezar Falls Woolen Mill in Kezar Falls, Maine, and at the GE plant in Limerick, Maine. She was a member of Anna Stickney Chapter of the DAR in North Conway and a member of the Eastern Star in Maine.
Family members include her husband, Robert Kiburtz; one son, Bernard (Joyce) Fisher of Middletown, Conn. and Yuma, Ariz.; two daughters, Beverly Boyden of Claremont, and Florida, and Bernadette Edmunds of Madison; two stepsons, Allan Kiburtz of Simi Valley, Calif., and Robert S. Kiburtz of Fla.; 16 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, William K. Fisher Sr. in 1957, and a son, William K. Fisher Jr. in 1973.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care of Northern Carroll County, P.O. Box 432, North Conway, N.H. 03860. There will be no memorial service at this time.
The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements.
James Howard Farrington
James Howard Farrington, 52, formerly of Lovell, Maine died Friday May 12, 2000 in Coshocton, Ohio. He was born June 13, 1947 in Lovell the son of Ralph and Barbara Poole Farrington and was educated in Fryeburg schools. He worked in a sawmill until he became disabled.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by two brothers, Lawrence and Ralph Farrington Sr. Survivors include two daughters Lisa M. Farrington of Fryeburg and Wendy Whitelaw and husband Donald Jr., of Center Conway; two brothers Robert Farrington of Lovell and Richard Farrington of Lovell; one sister, Dottie Smith of Fryeburg; two grandchildren, Olivia and Nicolas.
A memorial graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday May 23, 2000 at No. 4 Cemetery in Lovell, with the Rev. Violet Eastman officiating. Arrangement are with Wood Funeral Home.
