Flora F. Vadala
RYE - Flora F. (Mastromarino) Vadala, 88, of Rye, formerly of Brookline, Mass., died Jan. 7, 2002 after a brief illness.
She was born in the North End of Boston on April 22, 1913. The daughter of the late Rosina (Neri) and Nicola Mastromarino, she was married to John E. Vadala Sr., who died in 1981. She was a loving mother to her children.
Survivors include one son, John E. Vadala Jr., and his wife Elizabeth of Nottingham, N.H.; a daughter, Frances V. Crandall, and her husband Joel of Arlington, Va.; three grandchildren, John E. Vadala III, Christopher L. Vadala, and Brian D. Crandall; and one great-grandson, Nikolai A. Vadala.
VADALA - Flora F. (Mastromarino) Vadala, 88, of Rye, died Jan. 7, 2002. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) Jan. 9, at St. Joseph Parish, 200 Pleasant St., Epping. Burial will be at Holyhood Cemetery in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Marion E. Desmond
YORK - Marion E. Desmond, 90, of 2 Victoria Court, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at her residence after a long illness.
She was born on June 23, 1911, in Stoneham, Mass., the daughter of Francis S. and Ella (Driscoll) Desmond. She was a 1928 graduate of Stoneham High School and received a Bachelor of Education from Boston University in 1932 and was a member of Phi Lambda Sigma sorority.
Miss Desmond had been a school teacher and served as principal at Stoneham Elementary North School in Stoneham, Mass. for 39 years.
She was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church of York, and had been a C.C.D. teacher at the church for many years. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Teachers and volunteered in York for many years.
Survivors include her sister, Mrs. Robert (Eleanor F.) Morris of Stoneham, Mass.; two nephews, Paul R. Morris of Merrimac, Mass., and Donald F. Morris of Greenland, N.H.
DESMOND - Marion E. Desmond, 90, of 2 Victoria Court, York, Maine, died Jan. 8, 2002, in York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Christopher Church, York St., York. Kelly M. Haney
DURHAM - Kelly Marie Haney, 22, of 4 Tirrell Place, was fatally injured in an automobile accident on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001 near Lihula, Estonia.
Ensign Haney was born in Newport, R.I., a daughter of Keith and Ree Haney, and grew up in various duty stations around the country as part of a Navy family. She graduated with the Class of 1997 from Oyster River High School, and in May 2001, she earned her bachelor's degree and received her commission as an officer in the United States Navy from the United States Naval Academy. Since then, she graduated from the Navy's Surface Warfare Officer School in Newport, R.I., and was an assistant coach for the Naval Academy's crew team.
During her short life she accomplished great things, touched countless lives, and made the world a better place to live. Her love and compassion will be with us always.
In addition to her parents, missing her wonderful smile are her beloved fiancé, Tonu Mets, her sisters Jenni and Melissa, and her grandparents, Len and Eva Madden of Melvin Village and Lawrence and Becky Haney of Water Village.
HANEY - Kelly Marie Haney, 22, of 4 Tirrell Place, Durham, died Dec. 29, 2001. Mary E. Willard
BRENTWOOD - Mary Ellen (Tucker) Willard, 54, of South Road, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Exeter Hospital after a valiant struggle with breast cancer.
She was born on May 3, 1947, in Barre, Vt., the beloved daughter of Cecil (Pete) and Arline (Ewen) Tucker. She was a 1965 graduate of Spaulding High School in Barre. In her youth she was involved in Girl Scouts, youth groups and was a past worthy adviser of the Rainbow Girls. She later became a member of Ruth Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Barre.
After graduation from high school, she worked in the medical records department at Barre City Hospital. She married Thomas Willard on June 2, 1967, and moved to Germany where her husband was stationed in the service.
Upon their return, the Willards settled in Richmond, Vt., where they lived for 24 years. She was employed by the Chittenden East School District for many years. During that time she was an active member of the Richmond Congregational Church. In 1993, she moved to Brentwood and soon began her employment with the town of Kingston selectmen's office where she worked until the time of her death.
She was an active member of Pilgrim United Church of Christ Brentwood-Kingston where she sang in the choir. Mary loved the ocean, crafts, music, bowling and candy-making.
In addition to her parents and her husband, survivors include two daughters, Heather Willard Parizo, her husband Neil and son Taylor of Holly Springs, N.C., and Holly Willard and her daughter Haylea Verrastro of Dover; a brother and sister-in-law, William and Debbie Tucker of Los Banos, Calif.; a sister and brother-in-law Jane Tucker and Kevin Thompson of Putnamville, Vt.; two sisters-in-law, Kay Roberts and her husband Daniel of Plainfield, Vt., and Marlene Willard of East Montpelier, Vt.; and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
WILLARD - Mary Ellen (Tucker) Willard, 54, of South Road, Brentwood, died Jan. 7, 2002. A memorial service will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, Brentwood-Kingston, Route 111A in Brentwood. The Rev. Kimberly S. McKerley will officiate. William E. Cuddy
GEORGETOWN, Mass. - William E. Cuddy, 73, of Georgetown, husband of Margaret (Peggy Parah) Cuddy and son of the late John and Helen Cuddy, died Jan. 8, 2002, after a long illness.
A native of Lawrence, he was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, a Navy veteran, and a 1954 graduate of Merrimack College, where he received the Loyalty Award. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, where he served as an usher, taught CCD classes, helped initiate the Boy Scout troop, and co-chaired many country fairs. He worked in the accounting department at the former Western Electric Co. for 31 years, where he also began the Explorer Scout Post.
An avid bowler and a former member of the Far Corners Golf Club, he was an active supporter of local athletic programs. He served as a coach in the Andover Little League and the Georgetown Babe Ruth League, and after his retirement served as assistant to Bunker Bean in coaching the Georgetown High School baseball team. A former vice chairman of the Democratic Town Committee, Bill also served on the Board of Water Commissioners for 15 years.
In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by brothers, John Cuddy and wife Nancy of Wilbraham, Joseph Cuddy and wife Peggy of Hampton, N.H., Gerald Cuddy of Lawrence, and sister-in-law Betty Cuddy of Lawrence; in-laws, Alfred and Peggy Parah, James and Joan Parah, and Mary (Parah); Daniel Herlihy, to whom he was a surrogate father; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother James Cuddy and sister-in-law Agnes Cuddy.
CUDDY - William E. Cuddy, 73, of Georgetown, Mass., died Jan. 8, 2002. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at noon at St. Mary's Church in Georgetown. Burial will follow in Harmony Cemetery, Georgetown. Family and friends may call on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Merton E. Olive A. Foley
YORK, Maine - Olive Ann (Sullivan) Foley of 11 Desmond Lane, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002 at York Hospital.
She was born Oct. 18, 1928 in Manchester, N.H., daughter of George and Alice (Fountaine) Sullivan and graduated from Manchester Central High School in 1946.
Prior to being a homemaker, she was employed as a clerk in the city treasurer's office.
She and her husband, Donald, chose Manchester to raise their family of five children. They relocated to York 12 years ago to embrace their retirement years. This past November they celebrated 49 years of loving, dedicated marriage together.
For all she had endured, Mom was an inspiration to us all in what life is about. Regardless of her pain or discomfort, she was a shining lesson in life, that of love, and unconditional acceptance for the people we are.
When she smiled it caused others to brighten. This was the magic she possessed. She was active in the Pagets Foundation and was a volunteer at York Hospital. She enjoyed reading and painting with water colors.
She leaves her husband, Donald M. Foley of York; four sons and their wives, Michael Foley of South Berwick, Maine, Donald and Patricia Foley of Manchester, N.H., Shaun and Margaret Foley of Merrimack, N.H., Kevin and Kristy Foley of Mont Vernon, N.H.; daughter and son-in-law, Mary (Foley) and Paul Masse of York, Maine; two sisters, Margaret (Sullivan) Parodi of Auburn, N.H., Teresa (Sullivan) Donati of Goffstown, N.H., and 13 grandchildren. She also leaves many friends and wonderful caregivers from the Adult Day Program of Portsmouth, N.H.
FOLEY - Olive A. Foley, of 11 Desmond Lane, York, Maine, died Jan. 8, 2002, at York Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday at St. Christopher's Church, York St., York. Visiting hours will be held 1-4 p.m. Friday, at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Theodore Hansen
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Mr. Theodore Hansen of Winter Haven died of kidney failure Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at home. He was 78.
Born in Lake Forest, Ill., on March 12, 1923, he became a winter resident of Winter Haven 13 years ago, coming from York, Maine. He was a plumbing and heating contractor.
He was a member of the St. Aspinquid Lodge No. 198; past commander of the American Legion; trustee of the York Sewer District; a member of the First Parish Church in York; and attended Hope Presbyterian Church of Winter Haven.
He is survived by his wife, Jean M. Hansen; and brother, Gerrold Hansen, Lake Forest, Ill.

Virginia L. Hayes
KITTERY - The funeral for Virginia L. Hayes, 71, of 13 Park Ave., who died December 31, 2001, was held Saturday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. The Rev. Donald Isaac, rector of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Rockland, Mass., officiated. Jean Goss was organist. Burial followed in the Orchard Grove Cemetery, with the committal service conducted by Rev. Isaac.
David F. Saulnier
CALDWELL, Ohio - David F. Saulnier, 76, formerly of Whitman, Mass., and Summerville, S.C., died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, in Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus after a period of failing health. He was the husband of Sylvia (Haskell) Saulnier.
Born in Brockton, Mass., son of the late Joseph F. and Virginia (Campbell) Bailey Saulnier, he attended Whitman schools and worked as a heavy equipment superintendent at the Boston Shipyard until its closing.
He served in both the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War, later retiring as a member of the National Guard. While in the armed services, he earned an associate's degree in psychology and served as a drill instructor at Fort Dix, N.J.
He, along with his wife, formerly owned Daves Garage, The Windsor Motel and Garrison Apartments in Hampton Beach, N.H. While in Hampton Beach, he served as president of the Hampton Beach Hotel Association and was a trustee of the Northwood (N.H.) Public Library.
He retired as a heavy equipment superintendent for the Charleston Naval Shipyard in Charleston, S.C.
He was an avid bowler and reader, a private pilot, and enjoyed restoring antique cars and houses. He was also a member of the N.R.A.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Jeff (Susan) Singer of Caldwell, Mrs. Ray (Kate) Abels of Daytona Beach, Fla., Rebecca M. Saulnier of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Mrs. Stephen (Tricia) Littlejohn of Groton, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. Albert (Joan) Costa of Rockland, Mass.; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Hazel Powers.
SAULNIER - David F. Saulnier, 76, of Caldwell, Ohio, formerly of Whitman, Mass., and Summerville, S.C., died Jan. 7, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street, (Route 58 at the rotary circle) Whitman, Mass., with the Rev. Gary C. Hauze officiating. Burial will be in Colebrook Cemetery, Whitman. Visiting hours will be on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Barbara L. Perkins
SEABROOK - Barbara L. Perkins, 81, of 159 Walton Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Country Manor Rehabilitation Center in Newburyport, Mass.
She was born in Seabrook, Aug. 14, 1920, the daughter of the late Kenneth R. and Almena P. (Janvrin) Knowles.
Mrs. Perkins attended Seabrook schools and was a graduate of Amesbury (Mass.) High School, Class of 1938, and the Bridgeport (Conn.) Hospital School of Nursing.
She worked as a registered nurse for Supervisory Administrative Unit 21, and retired from the Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport, Mass., after many years of service.
Mrs. Perkins was a member of the Rand Memorial Church, attended the Trinity United Church, and was a charter member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Raymond E. Walton American Legion Post 70.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Vincent A. Yavorosky, who died in 1961.
Survivors include her husband Frank A. Perkins of Seabrook; two daughters, Deidre Yavorosky of Ithaca, N.Y., and Joanne Lowe and her husband Thomas of Seabrook; and one granddaughter, Sarah Lowe.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Kenneth Knowles and Leavitt Knowles.
PERKINS - Barbara L. Perkins of 159 Walton Road, Seabrook, died Jan. 9, 2002. A graveside service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the Hillside Cemetery, Seabrook. George Paige
KITTERY, Maine - George Paige, 57, of Kittery died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at York Hospital.
He was born Sept. 22, 1944, in Wolfeboro, N.H., the son of the late Sherwood and Agnes (Davies) Paige. He attended local schools and later settled in Kittery, where he worked more than 25 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a production supervisor.
Mr. Paige enjoyed the ocean and fishing in the ocean.
He loved and cherished his two sons, Ben of Kittery and Mike of Bar Harbor. He will be deeply missed by his many friends in this area.
There will be no visitation or funeral services.

Bernard P. LaPlante
CANDIAC, Quebec, Canada - Bernard Paul "Bernie" LaPlante, 69, of 51 Georges Ave., formerly of Nashua, N.H., died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at the Montreal General Hospital.
Mr. LaPlante was born in Nashua on Jan. 12, 1932, son of the late Edouard and Juliette (Theriault) LaPlante. He resided in Nashua for many years and has made his home in Candiac for the past 34 years.
He was the husband of Hazel (Maroon) LaPlante of Candiac. They were married on Feb. 8, 1964, at St. Patrick Church in Nashua and had celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary last year. Mr. LaPlante was employed by Gregg and Sons in Nashua and, in 1967 was transferred from New Hampshire to Montreal to oversee the company's Canadian expansion. Most recently, Bernie owned and operated his own consulting firm, focusing predominantly on sales. For several years he had the privilege of representing Gould Fasteners Ltd. in the province of Quebec.
His early education was at the former St. Francis Xavier School in Nashua and from there he attended boarding school in Montreal, at the Holy Cross Seminary.
Mr. LaPlante's undergraduate studies were at Saint Anselm College in Manchester where he majored in economics and minored in philosophy. His name was a permanent fixture on the dean's list before graduating in 1957. He then attended Boston College Law School.
Mr. LaPlante was a U.S. Air National Guard veteran, serving as a staff sergeant during the Korean War.
In addition to his wife, Bernie is survived by a daughter, Monique LaPlante of Montreal, PQ; his brother and sister-in-law, Roland and Sally LaPlante of Nashua; three sisters-in-law, Anna Maroon of Nashua, and Nan Mallen and Bessie Daher, both of North Andover, Mass.; 14 nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.

A. Huntley Smith
NEWMARKET - A. Huntley Smith, 92, of The Pines died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Exeter Healthcare after a brief illness.
Born May 20, 1909, in Elliots Cove, Newfoundland, he was one of eight children of Archibald and Rachael (Sanson) Smith. At a young age he came to the United States and lived in Lynn and Ipswich, Mass., for many years. For 18 years he lived in Dover and had resided in Newmarket the past two years. He wintered in Bradenton, Fla.
Mr. Smith was an engineer and worked for Shetland Manufacturing in Salem for many years. He held a patent on several products that he designed. When Smith Corona purchased Shetland, they retained him as a property management consultant.
He was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Gertrude E. (Crossman) Smith, who died on April 1, 2000.
Survivors include five children, Elaine G. Graves of Rochester, Helen A. MacWhinnie of Ipswich, Mass., Huntley E. Smith of Salem, Mass., Arlene A. Jewett of Raymond, and Edward A. Smith of East Kingston; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; two brothers, Donald Smith of Rochester, N.Y., and Otto Smith of Florida; one sister, Ethel Engheben of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Burdeene Worthington
EXETER - Burdeene Worthington, 82, of 7 Riverwoods Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at the Lodge at Riverwoods in Exeter.
She was born in New York City on April 16, 1919, the daughter of the late Paul H. and Burdeene (Bichele) Irvin.
Mrs. Worthington graduated from high school in Forest Hills, N.Y. Living on Long Island, she moved to Europe, traveling extensively from 1962 until 1975, residing in Belgium, Paris and later Monte Carlo. She volunteered at the American Hospital and American Cathedral, both in Paris, as a goodwill ambassador.
Moving back to the states in 1975, she resided in New Canaan, Conn., for eight years, moving to Portsmouth in 1982. Mrs. Worthington became a resident of Riverwoods in 1994.
She was wife of the late Arthur L. Worthington, who died in 1983.
Survivors include two sons, Arthur L. Worthington Jr. of Melvin Village, N.H., and Paul H. Worthington of Watertown, Mass.; two daughters, Anne Yarosevich of Springfield, Vt., and Cynthia Conant of Manchester; and nine grandchildren.
WORTHINGTON - Burdeene Worthington, 82, of Riverwoods Drive, Exeter, died Jan. 10, 2002. A celebration of her life will be held at the Cafe at Riverwoods, 7 Riverwoods Drive, Exeter, on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, between 2 and 4 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
