Alice B. Knightly
HAMPTON - The funeral for Alice B. Knightly, 93, formerly of the Dearborn House, who died Dec. 28, 2001, was held Saturday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. Michael J. Griffin, senior priest, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist. Altar servers were members of the Holy Name Society. Sister Doris Ouellette, C.S.C., and Sister Theresa Malouin, C.S.C., offered the readings.
Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery with the committal service conducted by Father Griffin.
Esther L. Hartford
BANGOR, Maine - Mrs. Esther L. (Pendleton) Hartford, 95, of 758 Broadway, and formerly of 141 Central Road, Rye, N.H., died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at Ross Manor in Bangor.
She was born in Haverhill, Mass., Sept. 14, 1906, the daughter of William B. and Lida M. (Emerson) Pendleton, and was a graduate of Haverhill High School, Class of 1923.
Mrs. Hartford was employed for many years as a bookkeeper for Warren's Lobster House in Kittery. Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a bookkeeper for the Portsmouth Trust Co. for 20 years. She spent her remaining years as a homemaker.
For many years, she was an active volunteer at the NHSPCA. She enjoyed playing cards, reading, knitting, and being with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
On Oct. 6, 1934, she married Christopher W. Hartford, who died in 1974.
Survivors include a daughter, Joanne H. Ramsay and her husband, Donald, of Lincoln; a son, Laurence H. Hartford and his wife, Carolee (Betton), of Orlando, Fla.; three grandchildren, Betty McEwen of Lincoln, Christopher H. Hartford of Pearl City, Hawaii, and Nancy L. Hartford of Orlando; three great-grandchildren, Nathan Dodds of Orlando, Kaitlyn Hartford of Pearl City, and Harrison J. McEwen of Lincoln; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy Carroll and Alice Parker, both of Portsmouth, N.H.; two brothers, Frank Pendleton of Caribou, and Byron Pendleton of Meridan, Conn.; and a grandson, James C. Ramsay of Lincoln.
HARTFORD - Mrs. Esther L. (Pendleton) Hartford, 95, of 758 Broadway, Bangor, Maine, and formerly of Central Road, Rye, died Dec. 27, 2001. A funeral service will be held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, Wednesday, Jan. 2, at 1 p.m. Visitation will be held at the funeral home, Tuesday, Jan. 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. Family flowers only. Barbara MacKenzie
PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Barbara (Goodrich) MacKenzie, 74, of 346 Pleasant St., and formerly of Scotland Bridge Road, York, Maine, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home.
She was born in Portsmouth on July 25, 1927, the daughter of the late William E. and Marguerite (Redfield) Goodrich. Mrs. MacKenzie attended schools in Portsmouth and in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.
Mrs. MacKenzie was formerly employed as a machine operator for Eastern Air in Dover, and prior to her retirement, she was employed for 12 years as a lunch lady at York Elementary School in Maine.
She attended the North Congregational Church in Portsmouth.
Mrs. MacKenzie was the wife of the late Arthur "Mac" MacKenzie.
Survivors include three brothers, Ralph Goodrich of Edgecomb, Maine, Clyde Goodrich of Portsmouth, and William Goodrich of Boise, Idaho; a sister, Louise Lovell of Freedom, N.H.; a brother-in-law, Sherman Brown of Jacksonville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. MacKenzie was predeceased by a sister, Marion Brown, in May 1995.
MACKENZIE - Mrs. Barbara (Goodrich) MacKenzie, 74, of 346 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, and formerly of York, Maine, died Dec. 28, 2001. A memorial service will be held at the North Church Chapel, 355 Spinney Road, Portsmouth, on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2002, at 11 a.m. Friends invited. Louise Amergian
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Louise (Manoogian) Amergian, 81, of 56 Fells Road, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, Friday, with services held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. The Rev. Ann W. Stevenson, associate rector, officiated. Lay eucharistic minister Karen Parrott assisted. In attendance were members of St. John's Episcopal Church.
Burial was in Forest City Cemetery in South Portland, Maine, on Saturday, with committal services by the Rev. Lester York, rector of Old St. Paul's Parish Church, Angelican Church of America.
Bearers were George Amergian, John Amergian, Leon Amergian, Gary Manoogian, Daron Manoogian and Rick Bedrosian. Honorary bearers were Richard Amergian, Gardo Manoogian and Archie Manoogian.
Jennie B. Babbitt
PLAINVILLE, Mass. - Jennie B. Babbitt of George Street, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, in her home. She was the wife of Milton L. Babbitt.
Born on March 5, 1919, in Central Falls, R.I., she was a daughter of the late Charles and Caroline (Bonk) Bielaska.
Mrs. Babbitt had been a resident of Plainville for the past 50 years and grew up in Central Falls.
She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Anglestone Chapter and was a Sturdy Memorial Hospital Auxiliary volunteer for more than 30 years. She also volunteered at the Boca Raton (Fla.) Community Hospital the past five years and was a member of the North Attleboro Historical Society.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Judith A. Jackson of Kittery, Maine; a sister, Mary Champagne of Warwick, R.I.; two grandchildren, Scott Jackson of Gilford, N.H., and Debra Dumont of Eliot, Maine; five great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law; many sisters-in-law; and cherished friends
She was predeceased by her sisters Helen Saferda, Amelia Strycharz and Bertha Murphy; and her brother, Charles Bielaska.
A service in celebration of Jennie's life will be announced at a later date.
Gladys L. Wamsley
YORK, Maine - Gladys L. Wamsley, 92, formerly of Plaisted Road, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at the Greenwood Center in Sanford.
She was born July 4, 1909, in Ogunquit, daughter of Arthur and Esther May (Cole) Perkins.
Mrs. Wamsley worked at Uncle Tom's Cabins, Route One, Kittery, for many years.
She enjoyed sewing and riding in the mountains and along the seacoast. She loved animals, especially dogs.
Mrs. Wamsley was predeceased by her husband, Thomas, who died in 1978.
Survivors include two nieces, Bonnie Rainville of Cape Neddick and Cynthia Foster of Colorado.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Chesley and Clifford Perkins; and two sisters, Beatrice Falls and Frances O'Keefe.
WAMSLEY - Gladys L. Wamsley, formerly of Plaisted Road, York, Maine, died Dec. 29, 2001, in Sanford, Maine. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in the First Parish Cemetery, York. There are no visiting hours. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.
Mary F. Bell
HAMPTON - Mary F. Bell, 78, of 3 Noel St., died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
She was born in Lynn, Mass., Feb. 5, 1923, the daughter of the late William and Mabel (Halloran) Oesterle.
Mrs. Bell graduated from Dorchester (Mass.) High School and had resided in the Boston area until moving to Hampton in 1977. She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church.
She was the wife of Alfred J. Bell for 49 years.
In addition to her husband, family members include one son, Lawrence W. Bell of Boston, Mass.; one daughter, Phyllis Lahey of Hampton; and one grandson, Daniel Lahey of Hampton.

Clara B. Parshley
PORTSMOUTH - Clara B. Parshley, 81, formerly of Cape Neddick, Maine, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation on Jones Avenue in Portsmouth.
Born in York, Maine, on Dec. 11, 1920, she was the daughter of Charles and Nellie (Todd) Matthews. She attended local schools, as well as business school in Portsmouth.
She attended the Cape Neddick Baptist Church and was a life member of the former Fadette Chapter No. 166 Order of the Eastern Star in York, and currently was a life member of the Sara Orne Jewett Chapter OES of South Berwick. She was formerly employed by the Kevin Guy Agency as a secretary.
She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Knapp of Portsmouth; and a son, Robert Parshley of Portland, Maine; her grandchildren, Seth Knapp, Rachel Parshley and Willem Parshley; and two sisters, Aloma Bowie of North Fort Myers, Fla., and Cape Neddick, Maine, and Helen Jaster of Philadelphia, Pa.
She was predeceased by a brother, Floyd Todd; and sisters Florence Pugh, Dorothy Hammond, Thelma Matthews and Phyllis Grimes.
PARSHLEY - Clara B. Parshley, 81, of 188 Jones Ave., Portsmouth, formerly of Cape Neddick, Maine, died Dec. 28, 2001. A funeral will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 2, at the J.S. Edgar E. Burrows
CENTER STRAFFORD - Edgar Eugene Burrows, born Jan. 2, 1933, in Milton, was a son of Carl Mark and Marion Gertrude (Rand) Burrows. He died Dec. 28, 2001, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
He was educated in Milton schools. He served 4½ years in the Army, and with his service in the National Guard and Army Reserve he served a total of 20 years. He worked for the state Dept. of Transportation for 30½ years. He served in the Strafford Fire Dept. and was the chief of police in Strafford and also served on the Rochester and Barrington police force. He was a life member of the VFW of Rochester and on two occasions served as its commander. He was also a member of the Barrington chapter of the VFW and a member of the N.H. Chiefs of Police Assoc. He was president and treasurer of the Strafford County Law. He loved country and western music, playing cribbage, fishing and going on trips. He was a good husband and loving father.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Miriam A. (Huse) Burrows; five children, Althea Burrows of Portsmouth, Debra Burrows of Center Strafford, Eugene Burrows of Center Strafford, Cynthia Chase and her husband, Michael, of Strafford, and Karen Burrows of Rochester; five grandchildren, Leslie Burrows, Rocky Chase-Burrows, Miriam Chase-Burrows, Lindsay Marie Chase, and Ryan Scott Doe, all of Center Strafford; one great-grandchild, Michael Adam Burrows of Center Strafford; four sisters, Ruth Dexter of Milton, Juanita Boles of Milton, Carlene Dilboy of Rochester, and Anna Burrows of Rochester; one brother, George Burrows of West Milton; and good friends Sandra Gorske, John Smith and Roy Scott Doe.
Four brothers, one sister, and one half-brother predeceased him.
BURROWS - Edgar Eugene Burrows of Center Strafford died Dec. 28, 2001. Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the R.M. Edgerly and Son Funeral Home, 86 S. Barbara F. Rhodes
KITTERY, Maine - Barbara Frances (Foss) Rhodes, 82, of 34 Shapleigh Road, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth, N.H.
She was born in Eliot on June 2, 1919, the daughter of Herbert and Bernice (Dixon) Foss. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1937, and the Plymouth Business School, Class of 1939.
She was a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. She was the wife of Cecil J. Rhodes for 61 years; they married in Kittery on April 14, 1941.
She worked for the town of Kittery in the Road Department, also as a secretary for the superintendent of schools, and as a bookkeeper for the osteopathic hospital in Kittery.
She was a very loving wife and mother and maintained a sincere and caring relationship with her friends. She was well-known for her creative talent in rug making, hooked pictures and creating greeting cards, and also marathon Scrabble games in the kitchen. She kept the family history alive with records and pictures and an interest in the family genealogy.
Besides her husband, of Kittery, survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and James Pope, of Eliot; a daughter-in-law, Ann Rhodes, of Derry, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, Peter D. Rhodes.
RHODES - Barbara Frances (Foss) Rhodes, 82, of 34 Shapleigh Road, Kittery, Maine, died Dec. 30, 2001. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Eloise M. Drown
LYMAN, Maine - Eloise May Drown, 93, of Walker Road, died Friday at the Newton Center in Sanford after a long illness.
She was born Oct. 29, 1908, in Eliot, a daughter of Edson and Bessie Ann (Shapleigh) Shapleigh, and is a graduate of Eliot High School. She also attended the Lynn, Mass., School of Nursing.
She did private-duty nursing until her marriage to Harold W. Drown, who predeceased her in 2000 after 65 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by three brothers and a sister.
She was a life member and past matron of Fern Chapter #139 O.E.S. and was the oldest member of the Shapleigh Family Association, which she joined in 1913.
Survivors include a son, Ralph H. Drown of Lyman; a daughter, Mayah M.E. (Mary Ellen) Smith of Alfred; four grandsons; one granddaughter; five great-grandsons; five great-granddaughters; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and her beloved animals.
DROWN - Eloise May Drown, 93, of Lyman, Maine, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001. An Eastern Star service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, Maine, with the members of Fern Chapter #139 O.E.S. officiating. Edmond F. Morin
ELIOT, Maine - Edmond F. Morin, 89, of 19 Marshwood Estates, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Varney Crossing Nursing Care Center, North Berwick, following a period of failing health.
He was born Nov. 10, 1912, in Eliot, the son of Joseph V. and Clara (Tondreault) Morin. He was a lifelong resident of Eliot, except while serving during World War II in the U.S. Army.
He was employed by Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 15 years, retiring in 1981. He previously was a partner in the former Morin and Son Brick Co. of Eliot.
He was a communicant of St. Michael Church of South Berwick, and was a member of the South Berwick Rod and Gun Club.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Rite R. (Berube) Morin, in 1968, and a son, Ronald J. Morin, in 1988.
Survivors include one son, Wayne E. Morin of Milton; one daughter, Diane E. Parent of Harwick Port, Mass.; two brothers, Paul Morin of Pensacola, Fla., and Wilbur Morin of McLean, Va.; three sisters, Lila Hrabchak of Milford, Conn., Irene Allen of North Berwick, and Lena Molleur of Eliot; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
MORIN - Edmond F. Morin, 89, of Eliot, Maine, died Dec. 29, 2001.
