Margaret Bernius
BRADFORD, Mass. - Mrs. Margaret (Thornley) Bernius, 84, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on June 17, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Charles F. Thornley and Margaret E. Morrish.
She was a graduate of John Jay High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to Haverhill in 1946. She was employed in the accounting department at New York Telephone while in New York, then was employed part-time for the former Maguire's.
She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Haverhill, as well as its St. Elizabeth's Guild. She was also a longtime member of the former Hale Hospital Auxiliary in Haverhill, and was a former volunteer at the American Red Cross.
She was the beloved wife of 53 years of the George E. Bernius, who died in 1996. Survivors included her daughters, Janet A. and her husband, William F. Moloney, of Chelmsford, Carol R. and her husband, Jack L. Hodges, of North Hampton, N.H., and Katheryn A. Bernius of Sebastapol, Calif; seven grandchildren, six granddaughters and one grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
BERNIUS - Margaret (Thornley) Bernius, 84, of Bradford, Mass., died Dec. 23, 2001. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral on Friday morning at 7:45 a.m. from the H.L. Farmer & Sons Bradford Funeral Home, 210 South Main St., Bradford, followed by a service at 8:45 a.m. in Trinity Episcopal Church White Street, Haverhill, Mass. Burial will be private in the Bourne National Cemetery. Elizabeth A. French
STRATHAM - , 66, of High St., died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Brigham and Woman's Hospital in Boston after a brief illness.
She was born June 25, 1935, in Exeter, daughter of Fred and Mildred (Tate) Chick.
She was a lifelong resident of Stratham and worked for 35 years nursing at the Exeter Hospital.
She was an auxiliary member of the American Legion Post No. 67 of Newmarket. In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting, coin collecting, and playing bingo.
She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Donald A. French, who died on June 28, 1995.
She is survived by two daughters, Donna Muehlen of Maine, and Linda Garson of Oklahoma; four grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
FRENCH - Elizabeth A. French, 66, of High St., Stratham, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001. There are no calling hours. Graveside services will be held on Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at 2 p.m., at the Congregational Church Cemetery, Stratham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Diabetes Resource Center, 333 Borthwick Ave., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, is handling the arrangements.
Virgil H. Miller
HAMPTON - Virgil H. Miller, 79, of 61 Seabury Condominiums, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital.
He was born Feb. 23, 1922, in Oakland Township, Venango County, Pa., the son of the late Frank and Julia (Jefford) Miller.
Mr. Miller was a graduate of Oil City, Pa., High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a first lieutenant with the Army Air Corps and was a B-17 Fortress pilot with the 486th Bomb Group Association. He was the recipient of the European-African, Middle Eastern Campaign ribbon with two stars as well as the air medal with five oak leaf clusters.
He owned and operated the Miller Insulation Corporation of Hampton from 1964 until his retirement in 1984. Prior to this he worked for the Hinman Asbestos Corporation of Boston, and before entering the service, worked for American Viscose Corporation of Meadville, Pa.
After his retirement he worked for the former Eatery Restaurant for 10 years and later Galley Hatch Catering Services.
He was a former member of the Associated Builders and Contractors Association.
He was the husband of Jacqueline A. (Porter) Miller for 28 years.
In addition to his wife, family members include six children, Gary Miller of Wenham, Mass., Joetta Kirk of Little Compton, R.I., Patricia Harrington of Hampton, Timothy Foster of Lanzhou, China, Julie McNaughten of Rockville, Md., Diane Dietrich of Lowell, Mass.; a special daughter-in-law Carman Miller of North Hampton; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles Miller of Greenville, Pa.; one sister, Ila Albert of Titusville, Pa.; nieces and nephews.
MILLER - Virgil H. Miller, 79, of 61 Seabury Condominiums, Hampton, died Dec. 24, 2001. Services will be held at the First Baptist Church, 3 Lincoln Ave., Hampton Falls, Saturday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Henry W. Berounsky
PORTSMOUTH - Henry W. Berounsky, 83, of 16 Brackett Road, Portsmouth, died peacefully on Monday, Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 2001.
He was born July 5, 1918, in Amesbury, Mass., to Bohuslav (Ben) and Marie (Vyborny) Berounsky. He attended public schools in Amesbury, Mass., and Dover, N.H., and was graduated from Portsmouth High School, Class of 1936. He joined the family business at Ben's Auto Body Inc., now at 11 Mirona Road in Portsmouth. He became president in 1940 and remained so until retirement in 1994.
He was married for 53 years to Sophie P. Berounsky, who died last April.
He expanded Ben's Auto Body Inc. from the two-stall garage on Parrot Avenue, founded in 1932 by his father, to a larger building at 801 Islington St. In the early 1960s, the business moved to its present facility on Mirona Road. His wife had worked with him as comptroller and vice president. Since their retirement, the business has been continued by their son and grandsons.
In addition to working and helping raise three children, Henry was president of Mirona Realty; past president of the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce; on the boards of the Seacoast Family Y and the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation; active in Rotary Club of Portsmouth, The Ranger Foundation, the Piscataqua Maritime Commission, Seacoast International Basketball Festival USA, Greater Piscataqua Community Foundation, the Immaculate Conception Church (including membership on the Parish Council), the Navy League of the United States, the Portsmouth Shipyard Association, Bauneg Beg Lake Association, Little Harbor Neighborhood Association, Portsmouth High School Class of '36 Reunion Committee, Masaryk Club of Boston, Portsmouth Elks, Daniel Webster Council of Boy Scouts of America and the Manchester Historic Association; and a supporter of St. Thomas Aquinas High School. He received many awards, including with his wife the Chamber of Commerce Citizens of the Year in 1990, the United Way Richard S. Lockhart Award, and was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.
Survivors include his three children, Michael H. Berounsky Sr. and his wife, Robin, of Newington, Nancy B. Anderson and her husband, John, of Gambier, Ohio, and Veronica M. Berounsky and her husband, Richard Lee, of Narragansett, R.I.; six grandchildren, Michael H. Berounsky Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Rollinsford, Jason T. Berounsky and his wife, Dawn, of Greenland, Kathryn M. Berounsky of Newington, Nathan J. Anderson of Gettysburg, Pa., and Elizabeth M.J. Lee and Benjamin B. Lee of Narragansett, R.I.; his four great-grandchildren, Matthew and Kayleigh Berounsky of Rollinsford, and Tayler and Paige Berounsky of Greenland; his siblings, Adolph Berounsky, Georgina Reynolds and Ruth Hill, all of Portsmouth, and Lillian Lanari of Glastonbury, Conn.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Jarmila Bresnahan of Newburyport, Mass.
BEROUNSKY - Henry W. Berounsky, 83, of 16 Brackett Road, Portsmouth, died Dec. 24, 2001. A wake will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 28, at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St. A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, Dec. 29, at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer St., followed by a burial service at Calvary Cemetery. Arthur E. Morse
NORTH CANAAN, Conn. - Arthur E. Morse, 82, of 99 South Canaan Road, formerly of Dover Plains, N.Y., and Eliot, Maine, died Dec. 24, 2001, at the Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Canaan, Conn. He was the husband of the Mary (Newlin) Morse who passed on in 1993. Mr. Morse was born Oct. 16, 1919, in Eliot, the son of Harold A. and Pauline J. (Place) Morse.
Mr. Morse was a dairy farmer. He owned and operated the Kitty Paw Farm in Dover Plains for more than 50 years. Prior to that Mr. Morse had been an apprentice at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, N.H. When World War II came he joined the Army Air Corps. He was a bombadier on a B-25 Bomber. He flew sorties over North Africa, and was severely wounded by enemy fire. For his efforts Mr. Morse was awarded the Purple Heart, two Oak Leaf Clusters and the Silver Star. After he was discharged from the service, Mr. Morse moved to New York, met his future wife in Pawling, N.Y., and settled on her family farm in Dover Plains. Mr. and Mrs. Morse continued and grew the dairy farm for the next 50 years.
Mr. Morse is survived by his brother Roger W. Morse of Eliot, and many nieces and nephews.
MORSE - Arthur E. Morse, 82, of 99 South Canaan Road, North Canaan, Conn., formerly of Dover Plains, N.Y., and Eliot, Maine, died Dec. 24, 2001. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, in the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. There are no calling hours. Madeline F. Wood Roberts
RYE - Madeline F. Wood Roberts, 89, formerly of Natick, Mass., died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at Webster At Rye Nursing Home in Rye, where she was a resident since 1998.
Mrs. Roberts was born in Wellesley, Mass., on July 6, 1912. She was the daughter of Ernest A. and Mabel (Shambler) Wood. She moved to Natick as a child and graduated from Natick High School, Class of 1930. She was a daily communicant of St. Patrick's Parish in Natick where she was a member of the Parish Sodality.
Prior to her retirement, she had been employed by Spear and Staff in Wellesley Hills.
She was a member of the former Sherwood Country Club, where she golfed and bowled.
She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Paul S. Roberts Jr., who died in January of 2000, and her brother Ernest A. Wood Jr.
Mrs. Roberts is survived by three children, Paul S. Roberts III of Santa Monica, Calif., Diane R. Riley, and her husband Chester H., of Hampton, and Patricia A. Treadway, and her husband Leo J., of Medfield, Mass. and London, England; two granddaughters, Patricia Riley Baker and Cathleen Riley Scerbo; and four great-grandsons.
ROBERTS - Mrs. Madeline F. Wood Roberts, 89, formerly of Natick, Mass., died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, in Rye, N.H. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral Mass in St. Patrick's Church, Natick, Mass., at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001. Burial will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Natick. Visiting hours in the John Everett and Sons Funeral Home, at Natick Common, will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28, 2001. John W. Maxwell
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - John W. Maxwell, 84, of West Palm Beach, passed away Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001. He moved to Florida in 1972, coming from Portsmouth, N.H.
He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring after 25 years. He was a 50-year member of the National Association of Letter Carriers Union. He was employed with Florida Public Utilities for 10 years.
He served in the Army during World War II. He was a Little League coach for 15 years, and his hobbies included line-dancing and golf.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Rose; his sons, Jay Maxwell and his wife, Lisa, Tom Maxwell, Brian Maxwell and his wife, Fachion, and Glen Maxwell; his daughters, Rosemary Santos and her husband, Steve, and Erin Borden and her husband, Curtis; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, David T. Maxwell and Robert Maddix; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Marilyn Francois.
Virginia S. Burgeson
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Virginia S. (Fournier) Burgeson, 99, of 346 Pleasant St. and formerly of Eliot, Maine, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Thursday. The Rev. Father Gordon Allen officiated. In attendance were representatives from the Mark H. Wentworth Home.
Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, New Castle, with committal services by the Rev. Allen. Bearers were Russell Dorr, Stewart Craig, Kyle Roy, Merrell Roy, Florence Dorr and Katherine Gregg.
Sophie V. Martowski
PALMER, Mass. - Sophie V. (Duda) Martowski, 80, formerly of the Bondsville section of Palmer, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, in Wing Memorial Hospital.
Born and schooled in Palmer, she was the daughter of Joseph and Jadwiga (Michon) Martowski. She was a communicant of St. Adalbert's Church and a member of St. Mary's Women's Club and the Tuesday Morning Music Club.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph J. Martowski Sr.
She is survived by four daughters, Dolores E. Znoj of Hampton, N.H., Marilyn C. Szaban of Shrewsbury, Dr. Sylvia H. Abar of Westfield, and Beverly A. Weaver of Kissimmee, Fla.; a son, Joseph R. Martowski of Palmer; a sister, Mary Duda Brozek of West Hartford, Conn.; a brother, Joseph Duda of Palmer; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Dec. 18, 2001, in Three Rivers. Committal was in the Saints Peter and Paul parish cemetery.
Stephen B. Eldredge
SANFORD, Maine - Stephen B. Eldredge, 47, of Hall Lane, died early Wednesday morning, Dec. 26, 2001, at home.
He was born on April 19, 1954, in Sanford. He was the son of Burke F. and Arline I. Hall Eldredge.
He was a fun, loving man. He enjoyed listening to the radio, especially to country music, and watching the television.
His father and brother Michael predecease him.
Surviving is his mother, Arline of Sanford; a niece, Cindy Lytle; a nephew, Mike Eldredge; a special cousin, Connie Allain; and several other family members.
ELDREDGE - Stephen B. Eldredge, 47, of Hall Lane, died Dec. 26, 2001, at home. There will be no services at this time. Burial will take place at First Parish Cemetery in York in the spring of 2002.
Sandra E. Caldwell
BOSTON, Mass. - Sandra E. Caldwell, 55, of 111 Atlantic Ave., died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at the Stanley Tippett Home in Needham.
She was born in Portsmouth, N.H., Oct. 10, 1946, the daughter of the late Bradley and Merlease (Downs) Caldwell. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1965, and had attended the Katherine Gibbs College in Boston.
She was an administrative secretary for the Boston Athenaeum. She was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church in Portsmouth.
Survivors include a brother, Bruce Caldwell and his wife, Viola, of Kittery, Maine; an aunt, June Harden of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; an uncle, Arthur Downs of Portsmouth; and two nieces, Tina McLean of Eliot, Maine, and Tammy LeClair of Kittery, Maine.
CALDWELL - Sandra E. Caldwell, 55, of 111 Atlantic Ave., Boston, Mass., died Dec. 27, 2001. A memorial service will be held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, N.H., on Monday at 2 p.m. Friends invited. No visiting hours. Family flowers only. Louise Amergian
PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Louise (Manoogian) Amergian, 81, of 56 Fells Road, died Wednesday, December 26, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
She was born in Istanbul, Turkey, Aug. 28, 1920, the daughter of the late George and Virginia (Emelian) Manoogian. Mrs. Amergian was a graduate of Portland High School in Maine, Class of 1938.
Mrs. Amergian was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. She enjoyed bowling and was an avid Celtics Fan.
She was the beloved wife of George Amergian for 62 years.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Susan L. Amergian of Littleton, Colo.; a son, Richard G. Amergian and his wife, Katherine, of Portsmouth; three grandchildren, George S. Amergian and his wife, Barbara, of Eliot, Maine, and John Amergian and Karen J. Amergian, both of South Berwick, Maine; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles "Gardo" Manoogian and his wife, Grace, and Archie Manoogian and his wife, Marlene, all of Westbrook, Maine; a sister-in-law, Patty Manoogian of Portland, Maine; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sons, Donald S. and John "Buddy" Amergian; two brothers, Nathan and David Manoogian; and a sister, Pauline Papazian.
AMERGIAN - Mrs. Louise (Manoogian) Amergian, 81, of 56 Fells Road, Portsmouth, died Dec. 26, 2001. Funeral services will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 Chapel St., Portsmouth, today (Friday) at 3 p.m. Visiting hours will be held at J.
