Daniel S. Franzoso
PORTSMOUTH - Daniel S. Franzoso, director of golf at Wentworth by the Sea Country Club, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, ending his inspirational and courageous 4½-year battle against brain cancer.
Born in 1942 in Portsmouth, his love of golf came early in his life, when he began caddying at the age of 9. He graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1960, where he played on the basketball and golf teams, going on to win the state golf championship in his senior year.
After graduation, he served his country in the United States Army as a paratrooper in the elite 101st Airborne Division.
His distinguished career in the PGA began as an assistant golf professional at Nashua Country Club in 1963. In 1967, he became the head professional at Abenaqui Country Club, where he remained until 1973. At that time, he embarked on what would be 27 years of dedicated service to Wentworth by the Sea Country Club, where he served as the director of golf until his passing. When the club celebrated its centennial in 1997, the practice facility was named in his honor. To commemorate his 25th year at the Wentworth in 1999, the members and his many friends in the community established a scholarship fund in his name that is awarded annually through the Greater Piscataqua Charitable Foundation.
As a member of the New England PGA, he was a five-time winner of the Merchandiser of the Year Award and served on the National Golf Day Committee for many years. He was most recently chairman of the Ethics Committee.
He was an active volunteer for many community projects in the Seacoast area. He was a proud member of the Mechanic Fire Society, The Propeller Club, The Portsmouth Athenaeum and The Pull and Be Damned Boating Society of New Castle.
In August 1997, life handed him the ultimate curve ball when he was diagnosed with brain cancer. His battle over these last 4½ years has been an inspiration to all who were privileged to know him.
He is survived by his loving wife and soul mate, Barbara; sons Christopher of Hampton, Michael of Stratham, and Anthony of Shrewsbury; daughter-in-law Lisa; and grandchildren Alexa and Ben of Hampton; parents Reginald and Esther of Portsmouth; his brother Eugene and sister-in-law Colleen of Greenland; and many wonderful friends and colleagues.
