Richard J. Bolton
RAYMOND - Richard J. Bolton, 84, of Coolidge Way, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at home after a period of failing health.
He was born Sept. 16, 1917, in Haverhill, Mass., son of the late Ralph and Veronica (Kopela) Bolton.
He had been a resident of Raymond for the past 18 years and formerly lived in Hampton Falls. He and his wife also spent many summers at their camp in Brownfield, Maine.
He worked for more than 30 years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, initially as a machinist and after the war as a mechanic.
Richard served as an active reservist in the U.S. Army, out of Portsmouth.
He was a former president of the Hampton Falls Volunteer Fire Department. In his spare time, he enjoyed carpentry and gunsmithing.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elinore (Brown) Bolton of Raymond; one son, Myron Bolton of Raymond; two daughters, Elaine Curtis of Exeter, and Lee Prigge of Danville, Ky.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Allen of New Jersey.
BOLTON - Richard J. Bolton, 84, of Raymond, died Dec. 12, 2001. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, on the Common, Raymond. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at the funeral home. The Rev. Neil Iverson will officiate. Burial will follow in the New Pine Grove Cemetery, Raymond. Flowers are acceptable.
PHILBRICK - Gene C. Philbrick, 79, of Somersworth, formerly of Kittery, Maine, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at Rochester Manor in Rochester. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, from the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery, ME 03904. WALKER - Germaine (Otash) Walker, 88, formerly of Portsmouth, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. next Monday at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Visiting hours will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Dover. GRANT - Robert E. Grant, 70, formerly of North Hampton, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Masonic services will be held at 6:45 p.m.
George E. Heroux
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for George E. Heroux, 85, of 3205 Lafayette Road, were held Dec. 11, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church by the Rev. Edward Kelley. The pall was placed on the casket by the Rev. Kelley, and the crucifix was laid on the casket by his wife, Marilyn. A reading was done by Joyce Miller. The gifts were brought to the altar by his grandchildren, Kimberly Chapman, Lindsay Chapman and Kasey Lynch. The pallbearers were Michael Lynch, Gary Chapman, Raymond Pierce, Ronald Grivois and Lindsay Chapman. Burial was in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery, with the Rev. Kelley conducting the committal. The flag was presented to the widow by the Rev. Kelley. A reception followed at the Portsmouth Lodge of Elks.
John J. D'Arcangelo
CONCORD - John J. D'Arcangelo, 82, of 50 East Side Drive, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at the Harris Hill Nursing Home.
Born in Haverhill, Mass., he was the son of the late Giovanni and Demetria (DiGiacomo) D'Arcangelo. He graduated from Medford High School in Massachusetts, Class of 1938.
He began his auto-body career in Medford, Mass. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he was stationed in Guam.
After his marriage to Arline, he lived in Reading, Mass., moving to Concord in 1956. He was employed at Patsy's Auto Body for 44 years before retiring in 2000.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Concord Elks Lodge #1210 of Concord.
He was an avid candlepin bowler and was involved in baseball for many years as a coach and player. He played for the Navy 41st Seabees and coached the American Legion Post 45 championship baseball team in 1953 in Medford, Mass.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Arline (Bissonnette) D'Arcangelo of Concord; one son, Steven D'Arcangelo of Concord; one daughter, Carol Bailey of Stratham; two grandchildren, Matthew and Melissa Bailey, both of Stratham; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
D'ARCANGELO - John J. D'Arcangelo, 82, of Concord, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001. Visiting hours will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Waters Funeral Home, 50 South Main St., Concord. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at St. John the Evangelist Church, 72 South Main St., Concord. Burial will follow at the Blossom Hill Cemetery. William W. Donohoe
WASHINGTON, D.C. - William Ward Donohoe, 91, a retired Standard Oil executive who worked in the 1960s and 1970s as an employee benefits and pensions consultant in the Washington area, died Dec. 9, 2001, at Sibley Memorial Hospital of congestive heart failure.
After moving from New Jersey to Washington in 1965, he worked at Unemployment Benefit Advisors and the American Enterprise Institute. In 1971 and 1972, he was staff director for the National Commission on State Workmen's Compensation Laws.
A native of Wilmington, Del., he was a graduate of the University of Delaware. He also took graduate courses at the University of Pennsylvania and Rutgers University.
In the early 1940s, he worked for the Bureau of Employment Security in Washington. He had a 16-year career at Standard Oil before returning to the Washington area in 1965.
He had volunteered at the Washington Home and Hospice.
He had been a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Washington.
His wife of 61 years, the former Alice Dugan, died in 1996. Their infant son, Joseph, died in 1942.
Survivors include four sons, Thomas of Washington, David of Potomac, William Jr. of Alexandria, Va., and Paul (Fran) of North Hampton, N.H.; two daughters, Margaret Donohoe of Washington and Alice Langen of Tucson, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Richard C. Marvin
PORTSMOUTH - Richard C. Marvin, 88, of 31 Beechstone, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001.
He was born in Arlington, Mass., on Aug. 15, 1913, the son of the late Louie G. and Louise A. (Bedo) Marvin. He had resided for many years in Lexington, Mass., moving to Hampton in the mid 1980s and to Portsmouth in 1998.
He was a chemical sales representative in the pulp and paper industry, working for 33 years at the Boston office of Stein Hall & Company and after his retirement as a consultant for the Web Company of Massachusetts.
He was a 1932 graduate of Somerville High School, Somerville, Mass.
He was the husband of the late Amy L. (Bergstrom) Marvin, who died in 1996.
Family members include two daughters, Karen M. McKinney of Dudley, Mass., and Lesley M. Sloane of North Hampton; four grandchildren, Jay McKinney, Tod McKinney, Christopher Sloane and Allyson Shroyer; three great-grandchildren, Benjamin Sloane, Stephanie McKinney and Emily Shroyer; two sisters, Gertrude Carlson of Holly Hill, Fla., and Edith Cosgrove of Arlington, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
MARVIN - Richard C. Marvin, 88, of Portsmouth, formerly of Hampton, died Dec. 8, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Nora Frances (Eaton) Gagne, 77, wife of Albert Maurice Gagne, of 64 Pine St., died Sunday, December 9, 2001, at SunBridge of Portsmouth.
She was born in East St. Louis, Mo., April 12, 1924.
Mrs. Gagne was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church in Portsmouth. She was employed for 18 years in civil service, including as secretary for the Atomic Energy Commission in the Department of the Navy.
Besides her husband, survivors include a son, Thomas M. Gagne Esq. and his wife, Judith A., of South Carolina; and a granddaughter, Katherine Elise Gagne of South Carolina.
GAGNE - Mrs. Nora Frances (Eaton) Gagne, 77, of 64 Pine St., Portsmouth, died Dec. 9, 2001. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at the Convent Chapel, 125 Austin St., Portsmouth, on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 9 a.m. Friends invited. No visiting hours. Glen R. Snow
SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Glen R. Snow, 49, of 37 Academy St., died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover. Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Aug. 23, 1952, he was the son of Robert Snow and Estella (Call) Snow and was a lifelong resident of the area.
He was retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a machinist. For many years he was a call fireman for the city of Portsmouth and later for the town of South Berwick.
In addition to his father and mother, both of Portsmouth, survivors include three daughters, Angel Snow of Rochester, N.H., Erica Snow of South Berwick, Maine, and Kristen Snow of Dover, N.H.; one brother, Gary Snow of Portsmouth, N.H.; a nephew, Tim Snow; a niece, Aimee Murphy; his close friend, Jennifer Olsen; and the mother of his children, Marguerite Snow. He was predeceased by a brother, Wayne Snow, and a sister, Linda Snow Murphy.

Irene L. Heps
HAMPTON - Irene L. Heps, 66, of 44 Milbern Ave., died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
She was born in New York, N.Y., on June 13, 1935, a daughter of the late Peter and Helen (Kapitan) Schoko.
She had resided in Hampton since 1995, having come from Furlong, Pa. She had also lived in Switzerland, England and New Jersey.
She was the wife of Irving G. Heps for 46 years.
In addition to her husband, family members include one son, Kenneth R. Heps of Missouri City, Texas; one daughter, Carolyn I. Duffy of Hampton; four grandchildren, Austin Heps, Stephen Heps, Paige Duffy and Jake Duffy; and a sister, Jane Jordan of Newark, Del.
HEPS - Irene L. Heps, 66, of 44 Milbern Ave., Hampton, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001. PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for CSC Cranford Harvey Couch, USN, Ret., 76, of 75 Taft Road, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Thursday. The Rev. Vivan Martindale, pastor of the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth, officiated. An honor guard was formed at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel by a detachment from Brunswick Naval Air Station, Brunswick, Maine, under the direction of Chief Petty Officer Bruce Quhn, including AS2 James Campbell, A2D Christine Brown, AT3 Dave Vier, MS3 Tony Farley, AZAN Matt Sharp, ATAN Steve Nelson, ADAA Alitia Gouveia, and ATAA Nate Crumsey.
A volley was fired under the direction of AS2 James Campbell, including A2D Christine Brown, AT3 Dave Vier, MS3 Tony Farley, AZAN Matt Sharp, ATAN Steve Nelson, ADAA Alitia Gouveia, and ATAA Nate Crumsey.
Taps was sounded, and the American flag that draped the casket was folded by AS2 James Campbell and ATAA Nate Crumsey and presented to CSC Couch's wife, Merwyn E. (Thompson) Couch, by Chief Petty Officer Bruce Quhn.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Daniel S. Franzoso
PORTSMOUTH - Daniel S. Franzoso, director of golf at Wentworth By The Sea Country Club, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, ending his inspirational and courageous four-and-a-half year battle with brain cancer.
Born in 1942 in Portsmouth, his love of golf came early in his life when he began caddying at the age of 9. He graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1960, where he played on the basketball and golf teams, going on to win the State Golf Championship in his senior year.
After graduation, he served his country in the United States Army as a paratrooper in the elite 101st Airborne Division.
His distinguished career in the PGA began as an assistant golf professional at Nashua Country Club in 1963. In 1967, he became the head professional at Abenaqui Country Club, where he remained until 1973. At that time, he embarked on what would be 27 years of dedicated service to Wentworth By The Sea Country Club, where he served as the director of golf until his passing. When the club celebrated its centennial in 1997, the Practice Facility was named in his honor. To commemorate his 25th year at the Wentworth in 1999, the members and his many friends in the community established a scholarship fund in his name that is awarded annually through the Greater Piscataqua Charitable Foundation.
As a member of the New England PGA, he was a five-time winner of the Merchandiser of the Year Award and served on the National Golf Day Committee for many years. He was most recently chairman of the Ethics Committee.
Dan was an active volunteer for many community projects on the Seacoast. He was a proud member of the Mechanic Fire Society, The Propeller Club, The Portsmouth Athenaeum and The Pull and Be Damned Boating Society of New Castle.
In August 1997, life handed him the ultimate curve ball when he was diagnosed with brain cancer. His battle over these last four and a half years has been an inspiration to all who were privileged to know him.
He is survived by his loving wife and soulmate, Barbara; sons Christopher of Hampton, Michael of Stratham and Anthony of Shrewsbury; daughter-in-law Lisa; and grandchildren Alexa and Ben of Hampton; parents Reginald and Esther of Portsmouth; his brother Eugene and sister-in-law Colleen, of Greenland; and many wonderful friends and colleagues.
FRANZOSO - Daniel S. Franzoso of Portsmouth, N.H., passed away on Dec. 13, 2001, at Exeter Healthcare in Exeter, N.H. A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 Chapel St., Portsmouth. Elisabeth S. Johnson
EXETER - Elisabeth S. Johnson, 90, of Exeter, formerly of Lexington and Easthampton, Mass., died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at The Lodge at RiverWoods in Exeter.
Born Elisabeth Zschiesche on May 14, 1911, in Florence, Mass., she was the daughter of Richard and Alma Kuhn Zschiesche.
She graduated from Northampton High School and went on to earn a bachelor's and master's degree from Smith College, Northampton, Mass., where she majored in hystology. She worked with Dr. Blankenhorn and Dr. Spies at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1935, and helped to isolate B vitamins for the treatment of pellagra.
She lived in Lexington, Mass., for 20 years with her husband, Carlton L. Johnson and children, Barry and Barbara.
She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and was an active 4-H leader.
Upon her husband's death in 1970, she returned to Easthampton, Mass., where she made a home for her mother. She remarried in 1980 to Dr. Reginald Shipley of Cleveland, Ohio. They shared many years of travel to various countries together. After his death, she moved to RiverWoods in Exeter, where she had resided for seven years.
She was predeceased by her son, Barry L. Johnson, in November 2000. She will be missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and John Meeks of Mission Viejo, Calif.; daughter-in-law Lisa Johnson of Newbury, Mass.; stepchildren Richard Shipley, Roger Shipley and Ann Gaither; grandchildren Casey Albies, Benjamin Albies, Taryn Johnson and Carlyn Johnson; several nieces and nephews, friends and staff at RiverWoods; and close friend Nellie Shulgold.
JOHNSON - Elisabeth S. Johnson, 90, died Dec. 12, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at The Lodge at RiverWoods, Exeter. Burial services are planned at Spring Grove Cemetery in Florence, Mass., in May.

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Janet Brooks (Sylvester) Hatch, 49, of 13 Dunlea Ave., Kittery, Maine, were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel on Saturday.
The Rev. Thomas Clark, pastor of the Tri-City Covenant Church in Somersworth, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by Mrs. Hatch's brother, Paul Sylvester. A poem was read by her niece, Sarah Sylvester, and bagpiper was Doug Cals.
In attendance were representatives from Ricci Construction and Ricci Lumber Co. in Portsmouth.
Burial was in Brooks Memorial Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Rev. Clark.
Bearers were Paul Sylvester, Doug Sylvester, Chuck Sylvester, Ken Sylvester, Rick Staples and Dean Grant.
