James F. Fish

PORTSMOUTH - James F. Fish, 90, of 40 Winter St., died suddenly on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Darwen, England, on Nov. 18, 1911, he was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Campbell) Fish and was educated in English schools. He came to America in 1927 and had been a resident of Portsmouth since 1942.

He was employed for some years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the Post Office and Simplex Wire and Cable Co. He retired in 1979 after 20 years as a cashier at Rockingham Park Race Track in Salem.

He was a member of the Portsmouth Retreat Guild, AARP, Knights of Columbus Council #140 and St. Mary's Assembly Fourth Degree.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary (McEachern) Fish, who died in 1985.

Survivors include his daughter, Marcella Mills of Rye; two sons, James Fish of Downey, Calif., and Thomas Fish of Portsmouth; six grandchildren, Joseph Mills Jr. of Greenland, Brian Mills of Hampton, Kevin Mills of Rye, Melissa Bonton of Cumberland, Maine, and Thomas M. Fish and Jamie Fish, both of California; and four great-grandchildren.

FISH - James F. Fish, 90, of 40 Winter St., Portsmouth, died Dec. 9, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. Family flowers only please. Memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church Building Fund, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Joseph P. Despres

Joseph Power Despres, 29, of Nederland, Colo., died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001. An experienced and skilled back-country skier, he was killed in an avalanche in Roosevelt National Forest in Colorado. He loved the outdoors, lived his life vibrantly and excelled at hiking, mountain-biking, backpacking and climbing, in addition to back-country skiing. He was an avid reader and a talented artist who expressed himself through his paintings.

He grew up in Marblehead, Mass., was a graduate of Marblehead High School and attended Maryland Institute College of Art and the University of Colorado at Boulder. He was a skilled tree trimmer employed by Hayes Tree Service of Boulder.

He is survived by his parents, Tom and Judy Despres of Marblehead; his brother, David of Englewood, Colo.; his maternal grandmother, Kathryn Power of Kittery, Maine; his soulmate and loving friend, Tracy Stull of Nederland, Colo.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

DESPRES - Joseph Power Despres, 29, of Nederland, Colo., died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001. A memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at the Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 85 Atlantic Ave., Marblehead, Mass. A charitable memorial fund has been set up in his memory to support mountain rescue and educational groups. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Joseph P. Despres Memorial Fund, ACF AYCO Charitable Foundation, Executive Woods, 855 Route 146, Suite 120, Clifton, NY 12065.

Phyllis E. Bassett

HAMPTON FALLS - Phyllis E. Bassett, 80, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home after a period of failing health.

She was born May 8, 1921, in Ossipee, daughter of the late Philip and Dorothy (Fall) Nute.

She and her husband had resided in Rye from 1949 to 1962, then moved to Nottingham until 1987. Her husband, Alfred Bassett, died in 1981. They wintered in Silver Springs, Fla., which Phyllis continued for several years after Alfred's death. In 1987, Phyllis moved to Hampton Falls with her son, and she spent the last three years at the Rockingham County Nursing Home.

She worked for more than 20 years with the Allied and N.H. Gas Co. in Portsmouth as their bookkeeper.

She attended Hampton Falls First Baptist Church, was a member of the Exeter Walking Club, and was a volunteer with the Exeter RSVP.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Alfred and Sylvia Bassett of Hampton Falls, and David and Judith Bassett of Milton, Fla.; four grandchildren, Kevin Bassett of Nottingham, Vickie Beau of Northwood, Christina Bassett of Hampton and Daniel Bassett of Newmarket; and five great-grandchildren.

BASSETT - Phyllis E. Bassett, 80, of Hampton Falls, died on Dec. 9, 2001. There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 13, at 1 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. The Rev. Kenneth Lawrence will officiate. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery, Hampton Falls. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rockingham County Nursing Home, 117 North Road, Brentwood, NH 03833; or to the Hampton Falls First Baptist Church, 3 Lincoln Ave., Hampton Falls, NH 03844.

Cranford H. Couch

PORTSMOUTH - Cranford Harvey Couch, 76, husband of Merwyn Elaine (Thompson) Couch, of 75 Taft Road, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at his home.

He was born in Athens, Ga., on Dec. 10, 1925, a son of Calvin Reese and Ellamae (Evans) Couch.

He attended Athens, Ga., schools and was a graduate of Clark County High School.

He served for 25 years in the U.S. Navy as a chef, during World War II and Korea. During World War II he served on the USS Ray (SS271). He was employed at the University of New Hampshire as a chef, retiring after 25 years.

He was known as the Mayor of Taft Road.

He was a member of the Fleet Reserve of Portsmouth and the Submarine Veterans of World War II.

Besides his wife, survivors include one son, Calvin Ralph Couch, of Portsmouth, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Ernest Couch, Harry Couch and Olaf Couch; and one sister, Frances Matthews.

COUCH - Cranford Harvey Couch, 76, of 75 Taft Road, Portsmouth, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Donations in his memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Flora E. Fletcher

BRADENTON, Fla. - Mrs. Flora E. Fletcher, 85, of Bradenton and Kittery Point, Maine, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton.

She was born Dec. 16, 1915, in Kittery, Maine. She retired from her position as a postal clerk after 20 years. She moved to Manatee County from Kittery in 1996.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Kittery Point, Maine, and the Order of Eastern Star

She was the wife of Warren P. Fletcher of Bradenton and Kittery Point, Maine.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Janet Wilson of Sunrise, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery, Maine, in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Robert E. Grant

NORTH HAMPTON - Robert E. Grant, 70, formerly of North Hampton, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at his daughter's residence in North Miami Beach, Fla.

He was born in Beverly, Mass., on Aug. 10, 1931, the son of the late John and Caroline P. (Hussey) Grant.

He attended Beverly, Mass., schools and was a graduate of Essex Agricultural School. He moved to Hampton in 1962 before making his home in North Hampton.

He worked as a real estate developer and was the owner of the former Grant's Gravel Company and Grant's Construction Company in North Hampton.

He was a charter member of St. James Lodge #102 F&AM of Hampton and was a former member of the Abenaqui Country Club, Rye Beach. He was the husband of the late Natalie A. (Thomas) Grant, who died in 1984.

Family members include one son, Douglas J. Grant of Hampton; three daughters, Donna A. Knowles of Barrington, Bobbi Jean Marti of Hampton, and Debra Duarte of North Miami Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Arlene Nixon of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

GRANT - Robert E. Grant, 70, formerly of North Hampton, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Masonic services will be held at 6:45 p.m.

Gene C. Philbrick

SOMERSWORTH - Gene C. Philbrick, 79, of Colonial Village, a former longtime resident of Kittery, Maine, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at Rochester Manor in Rochester.

Born on Dec. 17, 1921, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Eugene E. and Hazel H. (Pierson) Baker and attended local schools, graduating from R.W. Traip Academy in 1939.

She was a former employee of Harvey's Bakery in Rochester. She also worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Kittery during World War II.

She was an avid bingo player, enjoying her time spent playing in Dover. She also enjoyed playing golf with her husband while wintering in Florida. She was always ready for a meal of seafood out with friends and family.

Her family has enjoyed the hand-knit sweaters that she has made for all the generations over the years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Moulton E. Philbrick, who died in 1979.

Survivors include two daughters, Marsha Melhorn of Kittery, Maine, and Nancy and Jim Stock of New Durham; two sons, Bruce and Elaine Philbrick of Hampton, and Paul and Jeannie Philbrick of Battleground, Wash.; six grandchildren, Richard Melhorn, Brian Melhorn, Wendy Philbrick, Justin Philbrick, Brandy Gauthier and Adam Gauthier; and a great-grandson, Dezmyn, who was born in July.

PHILBRICK - Gene C. Philbrick, 79, of Somersworth, formerly of Kittery, Maine, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at Rochester Manor in Rochester. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, from the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery, ME 03904. Friends and family may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in her memory to the Homemakers of Strafford County, 215 Rochester Hill Road, Rochester, NH 03867. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Gladys I. Sadler

NORTH HAMPTON - Services for Gladys I. Sadler, 85, formerly of North Hampton who died Dec. 4, 2001, were held Monday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Graveside services were conducted in the Center Cemetery. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Hampton, officiated.

Norma I. Chisholm

NORTH HAMPTON - Services for Norma I. Chisholm, 86, formerly of North Hampton, who died Dec. 4, 2001, were held Tuesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. Services were conducted in the United Church of Christ. The Rev. Mike Mulberry, pastor, officiated. Terri Harman was organist. Private interment was in the Riverside Cemetery, Newmarket.

Flora E. Fletcher

BRADENTON, Fla., and KITTERY POINT, Maine. - Funeral services for Flora E. Fletcher, 85, who died Dec. 10, 2001, in Bradenton, Fla., were held Tuesday at the Griffith-Cline Funeral Home in Bradenton. She was born Dec. 16, 1915, in Kittery, the daughter of Nate and Elizabeth (Rice) Hubbard. She attended local schools. She worked 20 years as a postal clerk in Kittery.

She is survived by her husband, Warren Fletcher, of Bradenton, Fla., and also of Kittery Point. She and her husband moved to Bradenton in 1996. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kittery Point and was a member of the Eastern Star. Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Janet Wilson of Sunrise, Fla.; and four grandchildren. A graveside committal service and burial will take place in Orchard Grove Cemetery in the spring. The Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, is in charge of local arrangements.

Eva M. Wendell

YORK, Maine - Eva M. Wendell, 89, of Clover Health Care, Auburn, formerly of 155 York St., York, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

She was born on Oct. 6, 1912, in Peabody, Mass., a daughter of Joseph and Charlotte (Pothier) Bourque.

She had worked as a bookkeeper for Converse Rubber in Malden, Mass., and in the accounting department of the Malden Hospital.

She had resided in Massachusetts and Maryland and moved to York 20 years ago. She was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the Sea Church of York. She enjoyed crocheting and needlepoint.

She was predeceased by her husband, John K. Wendell, who died in 1972.

Survivors include her son, Robert W. Wendell of Santa Clarita, Calif.; her daughter, Carol A. Wood of Rockville, Md.; one sister, Helen Scanlon of Vermont; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

WENDELL - Eva M. Wendell, of Auburn, Maine, formerly of York, died in Lewiston on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001. A funeral Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday in St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn, Mass. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York.

Judith A. Yudkin

YORK, Maine - Funeral services for Judith Ann (Sussman) Yudkin, 63, of 7 Ruch Lane, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Tuesday, with services at Temple Israel in Portsmouth. Rabbi David Mark officiated. Words of remembrance were given by close friends Nancy Winograd and Sheila Shuch. In attendance were members of Temple Israel. Burial was in Temple Israel Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Rabbi Mark. Bearers were Ken Johnson, John Shultis, Elliot Winograd, Walter Woods, Gary Woods and Michael Woods.

Janet B. Hatch

KITTERY, Maine - Janet Brooks (Sylvester) Hatch, 49, of 13 Dunlea Ave., died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at the York Hospital after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Nov. 15, 1952, the daughter of Gordon Sylvester of Kittery and Madeline L. (Nutting) Ashley of Rochester, N.H., and Harlingen, Texas. She was a graduate of Traip Academy, Class of 1970, and had attended St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Kittery.

Prior to her illness, she had been employed at Ricci Lumber Company in Portsmouth for many years.

She was an accomplished seamstress, enjoyed gardening, and was actively involved with greyhound adoption services.

In addition to her mother and father, survivors include her husband, Craig Hatch of Portsmouth, N.H.; her daughter, Erica B. Hatch of Kittery; two brothers, Paul Sylvester of Milton, N.H., and Douglas Sylvester of Gonic, N.H.; aunt Shirley Sylvester of East Hartford, Conn.; uncle Ralph Nutting of Snohomish, Wash.; and several loving nieces and nephews.

She also leaves a wonderful support group and friends at the Biddeford Dialysis Unit in Biddeford, Maine, and her medical support group at Maine Medical Center R5.

HATCH - Janet Brooks (Sylvester) Hatch, 49, of 13 Dunlea Ave., Kittery, Maine, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of N.H., 1 Tremont St., Concord, NH 03301.

John R. Guevin

WASHINGTON, D.C. - John R. Guevin, 46, died of cancer on Dec. 5, 2001.

He was born in Waterloo, Iowa, on Dec. 25, 1954, and was a son of Richard and Jacqueline (Malo) Guevin. He had been a resident of Washington for the past 20 years.

He earned a B.A. degree from St. Anselm College in 1976 and a master's degree from Harvard University in 1981.

He was a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco from 1976 to 1979. He was an education program specialist on otaps at the Peace Corps and did a third tour as deputy director in Tunisia. He also served as director for refugees in Somalia for the United Nations.

He was dean of education at Iberlingua Americana, in Madrid, Spain, from 1979 to 1980.

From 1996 to 2001, he was a program analyst for public policy and outreach in the Office of Air and Radiation at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Family members include his mother, Jacqueline Guevin of Hampton; two brothers, the Rev. Benedict Guevin, O.S.B., of St. Anselm Abbey, and Mark Guevin, of Goffstown; a sister, Robin Guevin of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister-in-law; and a niece.

GUEVIN - John R. Guevin, 46, of Washington, D.C., died Dec. 5, 2001. Calling hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm St., at the corner of North Street, Manchester. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday in St. Anselm Abbey Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
