C. Helen Kopka Buckley
HAMPTON - C. Helen Kopka Buckley, 84, of Homestead Circle, died Nov. 28, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital.
She was born Sept. 28, 1917, in Exeter, the daughter of the late Samuel and Anna (Grunwald) Kopka.
A native of Exeter, she attended school at the Robinson Female Seminary.
Formerly a longtime resident of Amesbury, Mass., she had resided with her daughter in Hampton for the last year and a half.
She was employed for many years at the Merrimack Hat Company in Amesbury and was formerly the owner and operator of Bradshaw's Market in Amesbury in the 1950s. She also worked for 24 years at Western Electric, now Lucent Technologies. She was a volunteer nurse's aide at the Amesbury Hospital for many years.
She was a member of the Rebekka's, the Elizabeth H. Whittier Club in Amesbury and the Exeter Women's Club.
She was predeceased by her husband, James Bradshaw; five sisters, Bernice Rusine, Mary Thurston, Valerie Malone, Ann Mahoney, Victoria Hennessey; her brother, Frank Kopka, who died in 1999; and her granddaughter Kimberly Curran, who also died in 1999.
She is survived by two daughters, Sally L. Curran of Hampton and Judith E. Gunn of Topanga Canyon, Calif.; two granddaughters, Kellee L. Curran of East Kingston and Shirley Brady of Burbank, Calif.; three grandsons, Stephen H. Curran of Maka Wao Maui, Hawaii, David Gunn of Newburg Park, Calif., and Gary Gunn Jr. of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
BUCKLEY - C. Helen Kopka Buckley, 84, of Hampton, died Nov. 28, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Burial will follow in the Exeter Cemetery. The Rev. Wes Burwell will officiate at the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory either to the N.H. Association of the Blind, McGreal Sight Center, 25 Walker St., Concord, NH 03301, or to the New England Organ Bank, 1 Gateway Center, Suite 202, Newton, MA 02458.
Sister M. Catherina King
WINDHAM, N.H. - Sister M. Catherina (Mary Ellen) King, 86, a Sister of Mercy for 50 years, died on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at the Sisters of Mercy Warde Health Center in Windham after a long illness.
A native of Dover, Sister Catherina was the daughter of Michael and Catherine (Scahill) King of Dover. She held a bachelor of science degree in education from Mount St. Mary College in Hooksett.
Sister Catherina taught in Catholic elementary schools in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. She served at Holy Trinity, Somersworth; St. Patrick, Berlin; St. Mary, Dover; St. Patrick, Portsmouth; Sacred Heart, Hampton; and St. Patrick, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and Blessed Sacrament schools in Manchester. She was also a teacher at St. Ann in Gloucester, Mass.
In addition to her teaching, Sister Catherina handled the distribution of altar breads at the Convent of Mercy on Union Street in Manchester.
Family members include a brother, John King of Dover; a cousin, Mrs. John Kelly of Dover; and several other cousins.
KING - Sister M. Catherina King, of Windham, N.H., died on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001. Friends may call at the Sisters of Mercy Warde Health Center, 21 Searles Road, Windham, today (Friday) from 3 to 6 p.m. A prayer service will be held in Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, Sisters of Mercy in Windham at 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in Our Lady of Mercy Chapel on Saturday at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 21 Searles Road, Windham, NH 03087-1297. Lewis R. Allen
PORTSMOUTH - Lewis Ray Allen, 74, of Portsmouth, died Nov. 28, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
He was born in Mount Enterprise, Texas, on Dec. 27, 1927. He was one of 13 children of Annie Leslie and Elishie Allen.
He moved with his family to Portsmouth in 1961, and was stationed on the USS Aeolus at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He served in the Navy through World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
He retired from the Navy with 26 years of service, and then for 20 years worked in civil service at the commissary at the former Pease AFB. In retirement, he especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and world traveling.
He was the husband of Frances (Purvis) Allen.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his five children, Russell Allen of Bridgewater, Mass.; Cheryle Allen Lawrence and husband Charles Lawrence of Stratham.; Deborah Allen Mumford of Tucson, Ariz.; Karen Allen DeGraffe and husband Herb DeGraffe Jr., of Portsmouth; Leslie Allen Henderson and husband Wyntoun Henderson of Dallas, Texas; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; three sisters and one brother.
ALLEN - Lewis Ray Allen, 74, of Portsmouth, died Nov. 28, 2001. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. James T. Burns Jr.
PORTSMOUTH - James T. Burns Jr., 79, formerly of 315 Coolidge Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre. He was the husband of Doris W. (Quintal) Burns, who died in 1985.
Born in Haverhill, Mass., July 12, 1922, he was the son of the late James T. and Mary H. (Donovan) Burns.
He attended school in Haverhill, Mass., and graduated from St. James High School, Class of 1940, and went on to graduate from Bentley College. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army in Australia. In 1954, he moved to Portsmouth, where he lived until his death.
He worked for many years as a salesman in the floor-covering and furniture departments at Montgomery Ward before his retirement. He attended the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Portsmouth.
Survivors include his son, Anthony E. Burns and his wife Cathy of Somersworth; sisters, Nancy Urban and her husband David of Arlington, Mass., and Jane Langlois of Lee, and Patricia Jordan and her husband John of Vero Beach, Fla.; brother, Vincent Burns and his wife Pauline, of North Conway; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his son, Thomas Burns, who died in 2000.
BURN - James T. Burns Jr., of Portsmouth, died Nov. 29, 2001. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Walnut Cemetery in Haverhill, Mass. Elaine LaBrie
PORTSMOUTH - Elaine (Mellen) LaBrie, 84, of 928 South St., died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre.
She was born in South Boston, Mass., on Sept. 24, 1917, the daughter of the late Thomas and Margaret Mellen.
She was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Portsmouth and a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows.
She was a loving wife and mother. She will be remembered for her happy spirit and fun-loving nature. She loved music, to sing and to dance.
She was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred A. LaBrie.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas LaBrie and Roderick LaBrie, both of Sacramento, Calif.; a granddaughter, Michelle Reynolds, of Newington; and a devoted friend, Rena Mathieu of the Pines, Edgewood Centre, Portsmouth.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
Charlene Caton
PORTSMOUTH - Charlene "Kitty" Caton, 62, of Portsmouth, died Nov. 28, 2001, at the Sunbridge Nursing Center.
The daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Clark) Caton, she was originally from Damariscotta, Maine. She made her home in Kittery, Maine, for over 30 years before moving to Portsmouth.
She enjoyed her job as a dispatcher for many local taxi companies, making many friends over the years. She enjoyed playing bingo, cooking, and socializing with her many friends.
She will be missed by her three children, Maria Caton of Kittery, Michael Caton of Portsmouth, and June Houser of South Berwick, Maine; two grandsons, Cameron and Gage Houser of South Berwick; brothers, William and Robert; and three sisters, Cecile, Sandra and Victoria.
CATON - Charlene "Kitty" Caton, 62, of Portsmouth, N.H., died Nov. 28, 2001. A time of remembrance will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Dec. 2, 2001, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, U.S. Route 1 Bypass, Kittery, Maine.
Corrine S. Wiesman
BRENTWOOD - The funeral for Corrine S. Wiesman, 82, of Brentwood, was held Thursday from the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter. Services were held at the Christ Episcopal Church, Exeter. The Rev. John E. Denson Jr., rector, officiated. Donna Chaff-Specian was the organist. The readings were offered by Heather Wiesman. Words of remembrance were offered by Elaine Wiesman. Burial was private.
Preston A. Lafland
ROCHESTER - Preston A. "Porky" Lafland, 56, of 12 Third St., died on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, in Rochester, N.H.
He was born in Presque Isle, Maine, on June 16, 1945, the son of Archie and Mildred (Howlett) Lafland. He had lived in the Presque Isle area for many years, and then in the Newmarket, N.H., area for approximately 10 years, prior to moving to Rochester in August.
Mr. Lafland attended schools in Presque Isle. He spent many years driving tractor trailers, a job he dearly loved, prior to retirement in 1995. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and had a passion for professional football, having been a New York Jets fan. He also enjoyed NASCAR racing, and was a Jeff Gordon fan.
Surviving family members include his beloved wife of 11 years, Elizabeth "Beth" (Ball) Lafland of Rochester; a daughter, Paula Vaillancourt and her husband John of Presque Isle; his very special granddaughters, Shauna and Jessica Vaillancourt; a sister, Christy Brabec and her husband Ted of Deer Park, Wis.; two brothers, Gary Lafland and his fiancée Joan of Prince George, Va., and Alan Lafland and his wife Dea of Fort Myers, Fla.; his former wife of many years, Elaine Akerson of Caribou, Maine; several aunts, uncles, nephews and cousins; and many special friends throughout the U.S.
LAFLAND - Preston A. "Porky" Lafland, 56, of 12 Third St., Rochester, N.H., died on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001. Family members and friends may call on Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle, Maine. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are by J.J. Mary P. Ryan
HAMPTON - Mary P. Ryan, 80, of Hampton Meadows, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at her home after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Boston, Mass., on Nov. 24, 1921, the daughter of the late John J. and Elizabeth G. (Delaney) Ryan.
She was a graduate of Belmont High School, Belmont, Mass., and Bryant and Stratton Business College in Boston.
During her 38-year career with the New England Telephone Co., she attained the position of executive secretary to the president, a position she held during the terms of three chief executive officers. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
A communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish and a former member of the Pastoral Council, she was also a member and past president of the Catholic Women's Club.
She is survived by two nephews, John C. Ryan of Weston, Mass., Richard C. Ryan of Florida; and a multitude of friends.
She was predeceased by her brother, John J. Ryan of Weston, Mass.
RYAN - Mary P. Ryan, 80, of Hampton Meadows, Hampton, died Nov. 29, 2001. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton, Monday at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Isabel Raynes
YORK, Maine - Isabel Raynes, 90, of 13 Western Point Road, died peacefully on Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at her home among family and loved ones.
Born Jan. 22, 1911, in Newport, N.H., she was a resident of York since 1943.
She was a source of strength and wisdom to all who knew her. A lifelong Roosevelt Democrat, she was generous with her knowledge and compassionate in her judgment. She was a voracious reader, a fearsome Scrabble player and a self-taught woman who demanded the best of people. Strong enough to be exactly who she was, she always respected people's differences.
She was most proud of her six children and the large, loving family that unfolded around her. She was the sun we circled, the first mother in our lives, and she will be profoundly missed.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Raynes of York; and five children, Raymond W. Howe of Mathis, Texas, Harry B. Howe of York, Doris Glenn of York, James E. Howe of Sanford, and Ester Moser of York.
She is survived by her daughter, Betty Freeman of York; 18 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two stepsons, Stanley Raynes and Frederick Howe; and many family members who will always hold her dear to their hearts.
She was predeceased by her grandsons, Samuel Thompson of York and Alex Schermer of York; and her stepsons, Alan Raynes and John Raynes Jr.
Isabel was fortunate to die where she lived and her family wishes to thank those who made it possible. She made it to her final home at long last and forever.
RAYNES - Isabel Raynes of Western Point Road, York, Maine, died Nov. 30, 2001, in York. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, in the First Parish Cemetery, York Street, York. Family and friends are welcome. Arrangements by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home.
Rita M. Fernald
HAMPTON - Miss Rita M. Fernald, 88, of 22 Tuck Road, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at the Seacoast Health Center in Hampton.
She was born May 20, 1913, in Eliot, Maine, the daughter of the late Raymond and Grace (Higgins) Fernald.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Fernald Delano of Milford, N.H.; a nephew, Ray Shurtleff of Cambridge, Mass.; two nieces, Carol Newton of Lumberton, N.C., and Nancy Baker of Virginia; two grand-nephews, Christopher and Kevin Shurtleff of Newton, Mass.; and a grandniece, Bonnie Lee Briggs of Lumberton, N.C.; and other grandnephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Fernald.
FERNALD - Miss Rita M. Fernald, 88, of 22 Tuck Road, Hampton, passed away Nov. 30, 2001. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, State Road, Eliot, Maine. No visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Seacoast Health Center, 22 Tuck Road, Hampton, NH 03842. Arrangements by the J. Verne Woos Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth.
Norman J. Morrissette
EXETER - The funeral for Norman J. Morrissette, 78, of 277 Water St., was held Saturday from the Stockbridge Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Michael's Church. The Rev. Marc B. Drouin, pastor, was celebrant. Denise Kelly was organist and John Kelly was soloist. Altar servers were Joseph Latour, Al Markey and Thaddeus Klemarczyk.
The readings were offered by Suzanne Moore. Placing of the pall was by Mr. Morrissette's children, Marie, Michele, Melodie, Melissa, Jody and Megan. The gifts were presented to the altar by his grandchildren, Abbie-Rose, Sam, Dylan and Jordan.
The honor guard was by the Knights of Columbus Exeter Assembly No. 0639. Burial followed in the Exeter Cemetery, with committal prayers by Father Drouin. Full military honors were accorded to Mr. Morrissette by a detachment from Ft. Drum. The flag that covered the casket was presented to Mr. Morrissette's son, Jody.
Pallbearers were Frank Bronk, Brian Demers, Glen French, Andy Krueger, Gary Morrissette, Keith Noyes, Mark Wheeler and Jerry Wiggs. The Knights of Columbus Exeter Assembly No. 0639 provided an honor guard at the funeral home on Friday.
