Rita L. Clough
EPSOM - Rita Leone Clough, 77, of Suncook Valley Highway, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at the Epsom Manor Nursing Home.
She was born in Brewer, Maine, the daughter of Timothy and Mary (Long) McCarron. She worked for several years in the deli department of the IGA store in Concord. Rita also lived for a number of years on the Seacoast and worked for Dan's Star Market in Portsmouth for several years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert E. Clough in 1999.
She is survived by one son, James Clough of Chocorua, N.H.; one daughter, Susan Smith of Kansas City, Mo.; one brother, James McCarron of Litchfield, N.H.; one sister, Frances Pearson of Maine; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Franklin A. Emery
ELIOT, Maine - Franklin A. Emery, 57, of 5 Imperial Marshwood Estates, died in Eliot on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001.
Mr. Emery was born in Newport, N.H., on July 14, 1944, the son of Franklin and Ethel May (Manosh) Emery. He was a graduate of Eliot High School, Class of 1963.
He enjoyed music very much, playing the organ, piano and accordion.
A hair designer for a number of local salons, "Peanut," as he was known by close friends and family, enjoyed crafts and talking with friends at the Eliot Meat Market where he had been employed.
Mr. Emery is survived by his brothers, David and his wife Ann Emery of Eliot, Richard Emery of South Berwick and Gerald Emery of Thomaston; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved pets, "Poncho" the parrot and "Peep" the cat.
He was predeceased by his wife, Gertrude Emery, and a brother, Bruce Emery.
EMERY - Franklin A. Emery, 57, of Imperial Marshwood Estates, Eliot, Maine, died Nov. 14, 2001, in Eliot. A funeral will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at 10 a.m. from the First Congregational Church of Eliot. Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine. Donations may be made in his memory to the First Congregational Church of Eliot, 149 State Road, Eliot, ME 03903; or the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Ida R. Young
HAMPTON FALLS - The funeral for Ida R. Young, 99, of Exeter Road, who died Nov. 12, 2001, was held Wednesday at the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiated.
Burial followed in the West View Cemetery with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Moore.
Pallbearers were George Young, Everett Eaton Jr., Jody Hersey, Rod Hersey, Larry Tuttle, Fred Tuttle and Ben Tuttle.
John A. Coy
KITTERY, Maine - John Anthony Coy, 37, of Kittery, died Nov. 3, 2001, in Norfolk, Va.
He was born June 1, 1964, in New London, Conn. He graduated from Traip Academy in 1982. John joined the U.S. Navy in February 1983.
John was assigned to the USS Sirocco (PC6) at the time of his death. EN1(SW) Coy was assigned to Great Lakes, Ill.; the USS Sunbird (ASR-15), NR AS-11 Fulton Detachment, Portsmouth, N.H.; Assault Craft Unit 2, Norfolk, Va., and SIMA, Norfolk.
John is survived by his wife, Carlene Marie (David) Coy; his three children, John Anthony Coy Jr., Tara Lynn and Briannica Lillian; his parents, Darwin and Shirley Lien of Kittery; brothers, Darwin Lien Jr. and Nelson Vachon; and his sister, Katherine Coy Pomerleau; along with many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
A memorial service will be held on Nov. 17, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the Portsmouth VFW, Post 168. Reception to follow.
Shirley A. Geckler
STRATHAM - Shirley A. Geckler, 77, of Peninsula Drive, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at the Exeter Healthcare after a long illness.
She was born June 28, 1924, in Waterbury, Conn., the daughter of the late Franklin and Emma (Luippold) Stibbs.
She grew up in Waterbury and later in Wethersfield, Conn., where she graduated from the local high school. She then graduated from Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vt.
After her marriage to Kenneth Geckler on July 12, 1947, they lived for seven years in Newington, Conn., six years in Anaheim, Calif., 18 years in Simsbury, Conn., and the past 13 years in Stratham.
Shirley was an active member in the Exeter Garden Club and the Simsbury (Conn.) Garden Club. She was also a member of the Junior Woman's Club in Newington, Conn.
She was an avid gardener, loved to travel and loved art. She was very proud of the miniature replica she made of her family home in Wethersfield, Conn.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Kenneth Geckler of Stratham; three nephews, John K. Geckler of West Hartford, Conn., Robert J. Geckler of Terryville, Conn., and Allyn Papegaay of Rochester, N.Y.; two nieces, Susan El Shafie of Toledo, Ohio, and Jane Papegaay of Raleigh, N.C.; and her sister-in-law, Agnes Geckler of West Hartford.
GECKLER - Shirley A. Geckler, 77, of Peninsula Drive, Stratham, died Nov. 13, 2001. There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m. at the Stratham Community Church. The Rev. Dr. J. Jermain Bodine will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Lane Cemetery, Stratham. BEROUNSKY - Gerald William Berounsky Jr., 66, of Berwick, Maine, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, at Portsmouth Hospital. A memorial service will be held at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at 1 p.m. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine.
Doris E. Young
PORTSMOUTH - Doris E. Young, of Portsmouth, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
She was born May 4, 1917, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She graduated from Jamaica High School in New York and completed two years of college.
She was the wife of the late Wilbur Young and lived for many years in Manhasset and Mattituck, N.Y., and Indian River Shores, Fla.
She was a former member of the Congregational Church of Manhasset. She was a superintendent of the Sunday School, a member of the Women's Club, on various boards, past president of the Eastern Star and also a Girl Scout leader for many years.
Survivors include her three children, Everett Young and his wife Anne-Marie of Manhasset, N.Y., Donald Young and his wife Judith of Port Washington, N.Y., and Barbara Woodman and her husband Ralph of Rye; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her sister Helen.
YOUNG - Doris E. Young, of Portsmouth, died Nov. 14, 2001, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Services will be held at the Congregational Church of Manhasset, N.Y., at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by burial at 2 p.m. in the Cutchogue Cemetery, Cutchogue, N.Y. Elizabeth L. Duvall
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Elizabeth "Leez" Lazzaro Duvall, 74, died on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001. She was born in Portsmouth, N.H., in 1927.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Chuck Duvall; three daughters, Anita, Melissa and Vickie; three sisters, Margaret, Rosa and Julie; and two brothers, Guy Lazzaro of Florida and Al Lazzaro of Portsmouth.
William M. Melvin
HAMPTON - The funeral for William M. Melvin, 44, of 6 Henry Road, Rochester, formerly of Hampton, was held Thursday at the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. Michael Griffin, senior priest at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, officiated. Cremation followed the service.
Ardelle B. Robinson
NEW CASTLE - Ardelle B. Robinson, 82, of New Castle, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.
Born Sept. 2, 1919, in Minot, Maine, she was the daughter of Albert and Hazel (Bailey) Briggs and had been a resident of the Seacoast since 1955.
She was a graduate of the Farmington State Teachers College in Maine, where she received a degree in education in home economics. Mrs. Robinson taught at Traip Academy in Kittery from 1955 until her retirement in 1979. She was a member of the Maine Teachers Association and the Future Homemakers of America.
She loved spending time with her family, cooking, sewing, reading, and walking her dogs.
Survivors include one daughter, Shari Robinson of Portland, Maine; one son Jeffrey Robinson of New Castle; five grandchildren, Brandon Turner, Jessika Morin, Marta Robinson, Eli Robinson, and Duncan Robinson; two brothers, Elroy Briggs of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Arnold Briggs of Auburn, Maine; and three nieces and two nephews.
ROBINSON - Ardelle Briggs Robinson, 82, of New Castle, died Nov. 15, 2001. A private celebration of her life will be held at the convenience of the family. If desired, memorials may be made to the Tidewatch School, P.O. Box 420, Eliot, ME 03903. Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, is assisting with arrangements.
Jason M. Pridham
PORTSMOUTH - Jason M. Pridham, 25, of Sapphire Street, died unexpectedly Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001.
Born in Portsmouth, Feb. 24, 1976, he was the son of Nancy A. Canino and Michael J. Pridham.
A lifelong resident here, Jason was a graduate of Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1994. He was employed at various restaurants in the Seacoast area.
In addition to his parents, both of Portsmouth, survivors include his sister, Jaime Lyn Pridham of Portsmouth, his maternal grandmother, Louise T. Canino of Portsmouth, and his paternal grandfather, Frederick Pridham of Brookfield; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
PRIDHAM - Jason M. Pridham, 25, of Sapphire Street, Portsmouth, died Nov. 15, 2001. Funeral services will be held at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth, Tuesday at 10 a.m. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be on Monday from 5-8 p.m. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Richard C. Ollila
HAMPTON - The funeral service for Richard C. Ollila, 69, of 12 Homestead Circle, was held Thursday at the Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiated. Private interment was on Friday in the N.H. State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen. The United States flag was presented to Mr. Ollila's widow Sally L. (Curran) Ollila.
Carlton W. Wentworth
ROCHESTER - Mr. Carlton W. Wentworth, 68, of Rochester, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at Frisbie Hospital in Rochester.
He was born Jan. 31, 1933, in Kittery, Maine, son of the late John and Mildred (Cooper) Wentworth. He attended local schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served his country proudly in Korea.
He lived in the Dover area for more than 40 years and worked as an auto mechanic at McFarland Ford in Exeter. He retired in 1995.
He loved everything to do with automobiles, and worked on fixing them even on his own time. Over the years he collected model ducks and mallards that he received from friends and family, and spent many pleasurable hours watching the ducks and mallards at Hilton State Park and at a nearby yacht club.
He loved watching television and listening to Roy Orbison's music, and enjoyed being around his many friends and neighbors.
He had a tremendous sense of humor and was a very giving man.
On Jan. 4, 1984, he married Carol Towle in Goffstown, N.H. They lived in Dover and over the past couple of years resided in Rochester.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his beloved children, Colleen Spiro of Cape Coral, Fla., Cindy Towle of Portsmouth, Keith Annis of Rochester, Garry Wentworth of Louisiana and Kerry Annis of Rochester; along with his cherished 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by three brothers and a son, David.
WENTWORTH - A memorial service for Carlton W. Wentworth, 68, who died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine. The Rev. Wayne Nelson, pastor of the Rochester Church of God, will conduct services. At the family's request, only family flowers will be received. Those who wish may send contributions to a charity of one's choice. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Also, the family requests that those planning to attend services please dress casually, no suits or ties. Come and relax during this celebration of Carlton's life.
Beatrice N. Cornish
ROCHESTER - Beatrice N. Cornish, 90, of 60 Leonard St., died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, following a brief illness.
She was born on April 26, 1911, the daughter of Chester Cushing Nutter and Catherine Quinn Nutter in Rochester. She attended the local schools – School Street Elementary School and Rochester High School, from which she was graduated in 1929 as salutatorian. She was vice president of her class sophomore, junior and senior years. She was awarded the Springfield Scholarship and the Rochester Women's Club Scholarship.
In 1933 she was graduated cum laude from the University of New Hampshire with a B.A. degree in Latin, French and English. She was awarded the Cogswell Prize in 1932, which was given to the 10 top juniors for scholastic achievement. She took many postgraduate courses at UNH and in 1962 was a selectee for the National French Institute, held at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., for 10 weeks of concentrated language study.
Her teaching career was begun in 1933-1934 at Appleton Academy in New Ipswich, N.H., under principal Lester Smith, a former teacher of history in Rochester High School, followed by two years (1934-1936) at Nute High School in Milton, N.H. Then she returned to Rochester High School as teacher of all four years of high school English (1936-1939). This was continued at the new Spaulding High School from 1939 to 1947, when she resigned to raise her two daughters.
In 1952 she returned to Spaulding as a teacher of French and Latin until her retirement in 1974. During her years at Spaulding, she was faculty adviser for the Red and White magazine and for the National Honor Society. She was director of the American Classical League and of the Rochester Cultural Club, sponsoring annual trips for pupils to Europe from 1968 to 1976. She was class adviser for the Class of 1944 and the Class of 1963.
Mrs. Cornish also sponsored annual fall trips to Boston to attend the Boston Science Museum exhibits and the Cinerama wide-screen films. The annual spring trips were to the Shakespeare Festival at North Shore Music Theater in Beverly, Mass.
Friends may also remember Mrs. Cornish as a sales representative for World Book Encyclopedia from 1953 to 1973 during summer months and school vacations.
Mrs. Cornish was a member of St. Mary's Church from childhood. She served on the Parish Council 1980-1983 as chairman of the Christian Formation Committee. She was a member of the National Retired Teachers, the New Hampshire Retired Teachers, the Strafford County Retired Teachers (secretary 1977-1979 and vice president 1979-1981; director 1987 to 2001); honorary member of the National Education Association; AARP division of retired teachers; Delta Kappa Gamma International Honor Society for Women Educators; Zeta Chapter secretary 1980-1984; member of the Mary Torr Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; Strafford County Community Concert Association director for many years, vice president (1982) and secretary (1983-1991); UNH Alumni Association; vice president and later president of the Class of 1933, and served on committees for the 50th Reunion in 1983 and the 55th Reunion in 1988 at which time the UNH 1933 Endowment Fund to the Honors Program was established.
Mrs. Cornish was on the UNH Seacoast Alumni Board of Directors (1980-1990); member of Silver Squares at Durham; Rochester Women's Club (secretary, 1987 and 1988); Rochester Historical Society; and Durham's ARA (Active Retirement Association). She arranged annual reunions for the Rochester High School Class of 1929 from 1974.
In June 1995, Mrs. Cornish was honored by her alma mater and presented the UNH Alumni Meritorious Service Award and membership in the AMSA Association.
Survivors include her two daughters, Sharyn L. Stuart (Mrs. Norman E.) of Rochester and Cathryn C. Spreeman (Mrs. Joseph H. Sr.) of Northwood; three grandchildren, Michael D. Stuart and wife Carol of Houston, Texas, Jennifer B. Stuart of Pleasantville, N.Y., and Jotham C. Spreeman of Northwood, N.H.; two step-grandchildren, Deborah A. Spreeman and her son Gage of Phoenix, Ariz., and Heather M. Spreeman of Northwood; a cousin, Dorothy Chalmers of Rochester; and many friends and former students of 35 years.
CORNISH - Beatrice N. Cornish, 90, of Rochester, died Nov. 16, 2001. Family friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the R.M. Edgerly and Son Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., Rochester. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Church, Lowell Street, Rochester, with Father Pierre Baker, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will take place at the Rochester Cemetery on Franklin Street following the service.
Georgia V. Reily
RYE - Funeral services for Mrs. Georgia V. (Coombs) Reily, 86, of 795 Washington St., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Saturday. The Rev. Linn Opderbecke, pastor of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Newington, officiated.
In attendance were members of the church.
