John B. Despres Jr.
YORK HARBOR, Maine - John Baptiste Despres Jr., 85, of Victoria Court, died Nov. 11, 2001, at York Hospital from complications of Parkinson's disease.
Born in Rumford, Maine, on Aug. 31, 1916, he was a son of John B. Despres Sr. and Oselie Arsenault Despres.
At an early age, he and his family moved to New Brunswick, Canada, where he was educated.
Early in life he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, spending several years at the Chatham, Maine, camp. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was an electrician in Shop No. 6 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard before his retirement in 1978.
He and his wife lived in Kittery for more than 50 years and were original members of the Meeting House Village Community in Kittery. They enjoyed almost 10 years of residence at the village, making many friends.
He is survived by his son, J. Thomas Despres of Marblehead, Mass.; two daughters, Louise Benham of Rochester, N.H., and Mary Ann Hamel of Gorham, Maine; five grandchildren; his brothers, Gerard Despres of Suncook, N.H., and Louis Despres of Ware, Mass.; a sister, Geraldine Perry of Bethel, Vt.; a nephew, Thomas R. Power of Milton, Mass.; and many other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in July 2001 by his loving wife of more than 60 years, Geraldine (Robichaud) Despres.
DESPRES - John Baptiste Despres Jr., 85, of York Harbor, Maine, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, at York Hospital. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, from St. Raphael Church in Kittery, Maine, with the Rev. Real Nadeau officiating. Richard C. Ollila
HAMPTON - Richard C. Ollila, 69, of 12 Homestead Circle, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital.
He was born in Hancock, Mich., on July 15, 1932, a son of the late Matt A. and Nelma (Hakala) Ollila.
He lived most of his life in New England and had lived in Hampton for the past 15 years. He was an engineer and president of his company, Scandia Plastics of Plaistow. After his retirement, he owned and operated a dairy farm and bed and breakfast in New York for 11 years, called Fawlty Acres. He loved gardening, classical music and growing flowers and apple trees.
He was the husband of Sally L. (Curran) Ollila.
In addition to his wife, family members include two sons, Thomas A. Ollila of Wilmington, Mass., and Robert G. Ollila of Goffstown; four daughters, Kathryn A. Perrault of Alton, Kimberly D. Slemp of Exeter, Theresa L. Ollila of Concord, and Geraldine Pickus of Portland, Maine; 14 grandchildren; and one brother, Wallace Ollila of Jackson, Mich.
OLLILA - Richard C. Ollila of 12 Homestead Circle, Hampton, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001. Services will be held at noon on Thursday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. William M. Melvin
ROCHESTER - William M. Melvin, 44, of 6 Henry Road, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, at the Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
He was born in Fitchburg, Mass., on May 8, 1957, the son of Barbara (Mertin) Melvin of Worcester, Mass., and the late Richard A. Melvin.
He attended North Shore High School in Worcester. He worked as a supervisor for Adams Tool and Die Company in Worcester for 10 years. He later worked as a self-employed painter.
He resided in Worcester for many years before moving to Hampton in 1995.
He was a member of St. Ann's Church in Worcester, formerly known as the Mount Carmel Church.
He was the husband of Velma Cummings Melvin.
In addition to his mother, family members include one son, William M. Melvin Jr., of Bar Harbor, Maine; one grandson, Leim Melvin of Bar Harbor; two brothers, Dennis Melvin of Leicester, Mass., and Steven Melvin of Worcester; two sisters, Diane Denault of Worcester, and Kathleen Fuoco of West Yarmouth, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

Robert G. Hodson
BASIN HARBOR, Vt. - Robert George Hodson, 77, also of Delray Beach, Fla., died at his home in Basin Harbor, surrounded by his family, on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Oct. 8, 1924, the son of the late George L. and Olga (Knudsen) Hodson. He was a graduate of Brooklyn Preparatory School in Brooklyn, N.Y. He served as an officer in the United States Navy aboard the USS Niblack in the Pacific theater during World War II. He attended the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., and Georgetown University Law School in Washington, D.C. On July 23, 1949, he was married to Anna Marie "Patricia" Dwyer at St. Peter of Alcantara Church in Port Washington, N.Y. She predeceased him in 1997.
He was a former chairman and CEO of G.L. Hodson and Son Inc., predecessor to Willis Re Inc., an international reinsurance intermediary; a former chairman of the board of trustees for the School of the Holy Child Jesus in Westbury, N.Y.; and a former member of the board of trustees of Saint Michael's College in Colchester, Vt., where in 1980 he was a warded an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws in recognition for his service to the college.
He is survived by his four sons and their spouses, Robert P. and Patricia O. Hodson of Port Washington, N.Y., Thomas F.X. and Marybeth S. Hodson of West Hartford, Conn., William J. and Karen F. Hodson of Burlington, N.C., and Timothy J. and Amanda E. Hodson of Vergennes, Vt.; two daughters, Mary Patricia Strobel of Eliot, Maine, and Catherine H. and William S. Bristow Jr., of New Castle, N.H.; 14 grandchildren, Shawn, Megan, Michael, Ryan, Kelly, Carlie, Nicholas, Caitlin, Christina, Molly, Claire, Elizabeth, Andrew and Anna; and his sister, Clare H. Miller of Seabrook Island, S.C.
HODSON - Robert G. Hodson, 77, of Basin Harbor, Vt., and Delray Beach, Fla., died on Nov. 11, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, in the Chapel of St. Michael the Archangel on the campus of St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vt. Interment will be at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury, L.I., N.Y. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Addison Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753. George M. Palmer
HAMPTON - George M. Palmer, 76, of 64 Anns Lane, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, at his home.
He was born in Newburyport, Mass., on Oct. 18, 1925, a son of the late Ezra and Olive May (Wyles) Palmer.
He was a graduate of Amesbury, Mass., High School and Franklin Tech of Boston, Mass. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Force as a staff sergeant with the 409th Bombardment Squadron, 93rd Bombardment Group. He later served in the Korean War with the U.S. Air Force.
He was employed by Simplex Wire and Cable in Newington and retired in 1986 as manufacturing plant manager after 32 years of service.
He moved to Hampton in 1997, having come from Estero, Fla., where he had lived for 10 years. Prior to that he had lived in Amesbury, Mass., and Exeter.
He was a former communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Amesbury and St. Michael Church in Exeter and had been active in the Lions Club in Estero, Fla.; Amesbury, Mass.; and Exeter, where he was a past president. He was also a former member of Warren Lodge A.F.&A.M. of Amesbury.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth (Wilson) Palmer, and by a brother, Gerald Palmer.
Family members include his wife, Annette D. (Gonthier) Palmer; one daughter, Corrine Gilman and her husband, David, of Boxford, Mass.; two stepsons, William Drew of Amesbury and Robert Drew of Manchester; two stepdaughters, Lorraine Drew of Lebanon, N.H., and Suzanne Casey of West Newbury, Mass.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
PALMER - George M. Palmer, 76, of 64 Anns Lane, Hampton, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Sacred Heart Church, Amesbury, Mass. Ann F. Devaney
HAMPTON - Ann F. (McLaughlin) Devaney, 85, of 6 Moore Ave., formerly of Reading, Mass. and Manchester, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, at Country Manor, Newburyport, Mass.
Born Aug. 17, 1916, in Manchester, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Helen F. (Manning) McLaughlin. She was the wife of the late Michael V. Devaney.
She was a dressmaker.
Survivors include her sons and their wives, Michael W. and Beverly Devaney of Ohio, Robert M. and Jane Devaney of Oakland, Calif., Thomas E. and Kathleen Devaney of Merrimac, Mass., and John E. Devaney of Wakefield, Mass.; a daughter and her husband, Margaret D. and John Watson of North Reading, Mass.; a brother, Dr. William F. McLaughlin of Portsmouth; a sister, Eleanor Harding of Harwich, Mass.; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother, Thomas McLaughlin.
DEVANEY - Ann F. (McLaughlin) Devaney, 85, of Hampton, formerly of Reading, Mass., and Manchester, N.H., died Nov. 11, 2001. Wife of the late Michael V. Devaney; mother and mother-in-law of Michael W. and Beverly Devaney of Ohio, Robert M. and Jane Devaney of Oakland, Calif., John E. Devaney of Wakefield, Mass., Margaret D. and John Watson of North Reading, Mass., and Thomas E. and Kathleen Devaney of Merrimac, Mass.; sister of Dr. William F. McLaughlin of Portsmouth, Eleanor Harding of Harwich, Mass., and the late Thomas McLaughlin. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the St. Theresa's Church, 815 Central St., Rye. Ida R. Young
HAMPTON FALLS - Ida R. Young, 99, of Exeter Road, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation of Exeter.
She was born Feb. 18, 1902, in Danbury, N.H., the daughter of the late William E. and Jenny (Sawyer) Hill. She was raised in Danbury and attended schools in Bristol, N.H. She moved to Hampton Falls in 1920.
She worked as a housekeeper for many years, including for Jack Lessard and the late Dr. Charles Bailey. She was also employed by Applecrest Farm Orchards as a fancy packer and baker of apple pies. She braided rugs for the Hampton Falls Fire Department's auctions, and enjoyed bowling and gardening.
She was the oldest resident of Hampton Falls, and was the holder of the Boston Post Cane.
She was predeceased by her husband, Fred A. Young; a daughter, Beatrice R. Hart; and a son, George A. Young.
Survivors include four daughters, Dorothy M. Hersey of Newmarket, Evelyn J. Tuttle and Gertrude H. Eaton, both of Hampton Falls, and Shirley A. Dotson of Portsmouth; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
YOUNG - Ida R. Young, 99, of Exeter Road, Hampton Falls, died Nov. 12, 2001. Services will be held today (Wednesday) at 1:30 p.m. at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Wendy S. Desmond
EXETER - Wendy S. Desmond, 47, of 82 High St., died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital.
She was born Oct. 1, 1954, in Lansing, Mich., the daughter of Wayne and Marilyn (Gebhart) Desmond of Jackson, Mich.
She was a graduate of Waverly High School in Lansing and Michigan State University; and she received her MBA in organizational behavior from the University of Michigan Business School, where she was president of the student government. She lived in Michigan for most of her life, moving to Exeter in 1996.
She was an administrative aide to the speaker of the Michigan state Legislature while she attended college. She was a corporate vice president of organizational development for Tyco International LTD of Exeter, and before this worked Data General.
She was a member of the board of directors for Seacoast Hospice and a school-to-work committee member for the Exeter Area Chamber of Commerce. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, country and Motown music, but her passion was spending time at home with her husband and daughter.
She was the wife of Tom Kline of Exeter.
In addition to her parents and husband, survivors include her daughter, Abigail Desmond Kline of Exeter; one brother, Randy Desmond of Australia; two sisters, Marcy Jankovich of Jackson, Mich., and Michelle Timmer of Newaygo, Mich.; two stepdaughters, Amy Kline of Queens, N.Y., and Deborah Kline of Chicago, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.
DESMOND - Wendy S. Desmond, of 82 High St., Exeter, died Nov. 13, 2001. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Congregational Church, 21 Front St., Exeter. Margaret Saunders
YORK, Maine - Margaret "Peggy" Saunders, 62, of Avon Avenue and formerly of Sanbornton, N.H., died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001. She died at home with members of her family at her side after a courageous battle with kidney cancer.
She was born July 28, 1939, in Providence, R.I., the daughter of Anthony and Margaret (Mello) Santos, and graduated from St. Mary's Bay View Academy in Pawtucket, R.I.
At the time of her death she was an administrative assistant for Watts Regulator in Franklin, N.H., where she worked for the past 28 years. At the same time, she was the treasurer for the Webster Valve Employees Federal Credit Union in Franklin.
She was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church in Portsmouth, N.H. She was dedicated to protecting children and originated the N.H. "Kassidy's Petition" effort to change laws related to child abuse.
The light of her life was her 3-year-old granddaughter, Katherine Ruth Mahoney. All who knew her loved her wit, sense of humor, spunk and sensitivity. She was an avid fan of Broadway musicals, figure skating and community theater.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Jennifer (Saunders), and son-in-law, Timothy Mahoney of York; granddaughter, Katherine Ruth Mahoney of York; four sisters, Ruth Ann Santos of Seekonk, Mass., Nancy Ann Santos of Riverside, R.I., Marilyn and her husband Robert Goff of Rehoboth, Mass., and Mary Ann Santos of New York, N.Y.; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and devoted friends.
SAUNDERS - Margaret "Peggy" Saunders died Nov. 14, 2001, at her residence in York, Maine. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth. Georgia V. Reily
RYE - Mrs. Georgia V. (Coombs) Reily, 86, of 795 Washington Road, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
She was born in Peabody, Mass., on March 26, 1915, the daughter of the late David W. and Florence Emma (Larrabee) Coombs. She was a graduate of Peabody High School, Class of 1933.
Mrs. Reily was an avid reader. She loved living at Webster-At-Rye and enjoyed her many friendships there.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frank W. Reily Jr.
Survivors include a daughter, Judith E. Moskevich and her husband Nick of Portsmouth; a son, Wayne P. Reily and his wife Mary of Amesbury, Mass.; four grandchildren, Paul Moskevich of Buxton, Maine, Neil Moskevich of Hampton, Amy Keniston of Peabody, Mass., and Emily Reily of Dover; four great-grandchildren, Brian Moskevich, Kevin Moskevich, Laura Moskevich and Ryan Moskevich; and many nieces and nephews.
REILY - Mrs. Georgia V. (Coombs) Reily, 86, of 795 Washington Road, Rye, passed away on Nov. 14, 2001. Funeral services will be held at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, Saturday at 11 a.m. Friends are invited. Visiting hours will be held at the chapel, Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. Please omit flowers. Phyllis H. Remick
ELIOT, Maine - Phyllis H. Remick, 87, of Pleasant Street, died suddenly on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Portsmouth Hospital in New Hampshire.
Born in Eliot on Dec. 22, 1913, she was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert S. Remick. She attended local schools, graduating from Eliot High School, Class of 1930, where she was an active member of the Alumni Association.
Miss Remick worked for F.W. Woolworth in Portsmouth, where she was a bookkeeper for many years.
She was a past matron and member of Piscataqua Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of Kittery, and member of Sara Orne Jewitt Chapter Order of the Eastern Star of South Berwick. She was a past master and member of the John Hill Grange of Eliot, York Pomona, Maine State Grange and National Grange.
She is survived by her sisters, Alberta and Laura Remick of Eliot; her brother, Charles and his wife Lena Remick of Eliot; a niece and nephew.
REMICK - Phyllis H. Remick, 87, of Pleasant Street, Eliot, Maine, died suddenly at Portsmouth Hospital on Nov. 13. A funeral will be held on Monday, Nov. 18, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the J.S.
